Accurate collision-induced line-coupling parameters for the fundamental band of CO in He - Close coupling and coupled states scattering calculations

The first accurate theoretical values for off-diagonal (i.e., line-coupling) pressure-broadening cross sections are presented. Calculations were done for CO perturbed by He at thermal collision energies using an accurate ab initio potential energy surface. Converged close coupling, i.e., numerically exact values, were obtained for coupling to the R(0) and R(2) lines. These were used to test the coupled states (CS) and infinite order sudden (IOS) approximate scattering methods. CS was found to be of quantitative accuracy (a few percent) and has been used to obtain coupling values for lines to R(10). IOS values are less accurate, but, owing to their simplicity, may nonetheless prove useful as has been recently demonstrated.

Very Large Array Ammonia Observations of the HH 111/HH 121 Protostellar System: A Detection of a New Source with a Peculiar Chemistry

We present the results of Very Large Array NH3 (J, K) = (1, 1) and (2, 2) observations of the HH 111/HH 121 protostellar system. HH 111, with a spectacular collimated optical jet, is one of the most well-known Herbig-Haro objects. We report the detection of a new source, NH3-S, in the vicinity of HH 111/HH 121 (approximately 0.03 parsecs from the HH 111 jet source) in two epochs of the ammonia observations. This constitutes the first detection of this source, in a region that has been thoroughly covered previously by both continuum and spectral line interferometric observations. We study the kinematic and physical properties of HH 111 and the newly discovered NH3-S. We also use HCO plus and HCN (J=4-3) data obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and archival Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (sup 13) CO, (sup 12) CO, and C (sup 18) O (J=2-1), N2D plus (J=3-2), and (sup 13) CS (J=5-4) data to gain insight into the nature of NH3-S. The chemical structure of NH3-S shows evidence for "selective freeze-out," an inherent characteristic of dense cold cores. The inner part of NH3-S shows subsonic nonthermal velocity dispersions indicating a "coherent core," while they increase in the direction of the jets. Archival near- to far-infrared data show no indication of any embedded source in NH3-S. The properties of NH3-S and its location in the infrared dark cloud suggest that it is a starless core located in a turbulent medium, with the turbulence induced by Herbig-Haro jets and associated outflows. More data are needed to fully understand the physical and chemical properties of NH3-S and if/how its evolution is affected by nearby jets.

Thermal tolerance of perovskite quantum dots dependent on A-site cation and surface ligand

A detailed picture of temperature dependent behavior of Cs x FA 1-x PbI 3 perovskite quantum dots across the composition range is constructed by performing in situ optical spectroscopic and structural measurements, supported by theoretical calculations that focus on the relation between A-site chemical composition and surface ligand binding. The thermal degradation mechanism depends not only on the exact chemical composition, but also on the ligand binding energy. The thermal degradation of Cs-rich perovskite quantum dots is induced by a phase transition from black γ-phase to yellow δ-phase, while FA-rich perovskite quantum dots with higher ligand binding energy directly decompose into PbI 2 . Quantum dot growth to form large bulk size grain is observed for all Cs x FA 1-x PbI 3 perovskite quantum dots at elevated temperatures. In addition, FA-rich quantum dots possess stronger electron-longitudinal optical phonon coupling, suggesting that photogenerated excitons in FA-rich quantum dots have higher probability to be dissociated by phonon scattering compared to Cs-rich quantum dots.

Design and characterization of hierarchical aluminosilicate composite materials for Cs entrapment: Adsorption efficiency tied to microstructure

The growing quantity of nuclear waste and the serious threats to the environment challenge researchers to innovate and target new waste form technologies. In the past decades, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing highly selective sorbents followed by safe disposal with the assurance of chemical stability and robust retention performance. Zeolite-containing geopolymers are regarded as a possible 2-in-1 material able to both capture and sequester elements such as Cs in bed fixed column application perspective. Here, these composites show promise for combining extraction properties of zeolite powder due to its crystalline structure (high capacity and selective adsorption), with the tunable microstructure and the shaping feasibility of the geopolymer binder. For the development of materials devoted to Cs immobilization, porous zeolite/geopolymer composites were prepared by dispersing NaY zeolite particles in a geopolymer binder. The influence of the structural properties of such composites on their ability to entrap a large amount of Cs by an ionic exchange process was notably studied. Composites' compositions, porosities, morphologies and crystallinity were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption studies. Experimental Cs sorption in batch mode was used to follow the ionic exchange phenomenon in these materials. Along with 5 wt% amount of zeolite in geopolymer improves the Cs adsorption performance offering multiple new adsorption sites. Additionally, the geopolymer mesopores are beneficial facilitating the access of Cs and its role as a binder is advantageous to tailor granular hierarchical structure for safer industrial application.
