Protective coating for lithium-containing electrode and methods of making the same

A lithium-containing electrode with a protective coating and lithium-containing electrochemical cells including the same are provided herein. The protective coating has a first layer including a first fluoropolymeric matrix and Li—F compounds and a second layer including a second fluoropolymeric matrix. Methods of preparing the protective coating on the lithium-containing electrode by applying a first fluoropolymer and/or a first fluoropolymer precursor and a second fluoropolymer and/or a second fluoropolymer precursor are also provided herein.

Electrically Conductive and Protective Coating Compatibility with LSCF Cathodes

Ferritic stainless-steel interconnect materials are used in intermediate or high-temperature SOFCs because of their oxidation resistance, high formability, and low cost. Their corrosion resistance is due to the formation of a protective chromium oxide scale during operation. However, the protective oxide layer produces Cr-containing volatile species at SOFC operating temperatures and conditions, which can cause cathode poisoning. Spinel coatings have been developed to prevent cathode poisoning while maintaining an electrically conductive pathway through SOFC stacks. Generally, Mn-Co-O spinel has been the material of choice, but PNNL has developed an Mn-Cu-O spinel protective coating to remove the costly Co and enhance the electrical conductivity. This paper will focus on the electrically conductive coating’s compatibility with LSCF in high-temperature operating environments.

Damping coating with a constraint layer

A coating is applied to a base material. The coating comprises a viscoelastic layer having a surface in which cavities are formed; and a constraint layer. The viscoelastic layer is disposed on the base material, and the constraint layer is disposed on, and partially bonded, at an interface, to the viscoelastic layer over the surface in which the cavities are formed. The cavities are filled with particles configured for vibration and frictional interaction at the partially bonded interface between the partially bonded viscoelastic layer and the constraint layer. A turbine blade having an airfoil with the subject coating is also provided.

Systems and methods for application of stress corrosion cracking resistant cold spray coatings

Systems and methods for application of stress corrosion cracking resistant cold spray coatings include a method of forming a partial coating on a canister having a perimeter wall with a surface. The method may include identifying a compromised region on the surface of the wall of the canister, and impacting a substantially linear flow of particles of a powder against an area in the compromised region of the surface in a manner effective to cause the particles of the powder to bond to the surface of the wall to produce a coating on the area of the compromised region. The method may also include moving the substantially linear flow in a direction substantially parallel to the surface of the wall to cause the particles to impact an additional area of the compromised region to cause the particles to bond to the surface of the additional area.

Method for coating a separator for a battery

A method for coating a separator for a battery includes creating an electrostatic field and disposing a substrate material within the electrostatic field. The method further includes applying a coating material to the substrate material in a presence of the electrostatic field and drying the coating material upon the substrate material.

Protective coatings for lithium metal electrodes

Double-layered protective coatings for lithium metal electrodes, as well as methods of formation relating thereto, are provided. The negative electrode assembly includes an electroactive material layer including lithium metal and a protective dual-layered coating. The protective dual-layered coating includes a polymeric layer disposed on a surface of the electroactive material layer and an inorganic layer disposed on an exposed surface of the polymeric layer. The polymeric layer has an elastic modulus of greater than or equal to about 0.01 GPa to less than or equal to about 410 GPa. The inorganic layer has an elastic modulus of greater than or equal to about 10 GPa to less than or equal to about 1000 GPa.

First Results From Nb3Sn Coatings of 2.6 GHz Nb SRF Cavities Using DC Cylindrical Magnetron Sputtering System

A DC cylindrical magnetron sputtering system has been commissioned and operated to deposit Nb3Sn onto 2.6 GHz Nb SRF cavities. After optimizing the deposition conditions in a mock-up cavity, Nb-Sn films are deposited first on flat samples by multilayer sequential sputtering of Nb and Sn, and later annealed at 950°C for 3 hours. X-ray diffraction of the films showed multiple peaks for the Nb3Sn phase and Nb (substrate). No peaks from any Nb- Sn compound other than Nb3Sn were detected. Later three 2.6 GHz Nb SRF cavities are coated with ~1 μm thick Nb3Sn. The first Nb3Sn coated cavity reached close to Eacc = 8 MV/m, demonstrating a quality factor Q0 of $3.2 \times 108$ at Tbath = 4.4 K and Eacc = 5 MV/m, about a factor of three higher than that of Nb at this temperature. Q0 was close to $1.1 \times 109$, dominated by the residual resistance, at 2 K and Eacc = 5 MV/m. The Nb3Sn coated cavities demonstrated Tc in the range of $17.9 -- 18$ K. Here we present the commissioning experience, system optimization, and the first results from the Nb3Sn fabrication on flat samples and SRF cavities.

Cross-linkable nanocomposite anticorrosion coating

Nanocomposite anticorrosion coating can be achieved by depositing alternating, multilayers of a cross-linkable polymer and dispersed and aligned inorganic platelets followed by cross-linking of the cross-linkable polymer. The cross-linkable polymer can be an externally cross-linkable polymer that is cross-linked by diffusing a cross-linking agent into the deposited multilayer coating. Alternately, the cross-linkable polymer can be a functionalized cross-linkable polymer that is cross-linked by self-curing, thermal heat curing, or light (e.g., UV) following deposition of the multilayer coating.

Thermal barrier coatings

High temperature stable thermal barrier coatings useful for substrates that form component parts of engines such as a component from a gas turbine engine exposed to high temperatures are provided. The thermal barrier coatings include a multiphase composite and/or a multilayer coating comprised of two or more phases with at least one phase providing a low thermal conductivity and at least one phase providing mechanical and erosion durability. Such low thermal conductivity phase can include a rare earth zirconate and such mechanical durability phase can include a rare earth a rare earth aluminate. The different phases are thermochemically compatible even at high temperatures above about 1200° C.

Methods of forming a metal coated article

A method of forming a metal coated article, comprises forming a metal halide in a molten salt plating bath at a first temperature, wherein forming the metal halide in the molten salt further comprises forming at least one functional metal halide electrolyte; and forming at least two auxiliary metal halide electrolytes at eutectic conditions; increasing the first temperature to a second temperature; forming a plated metal coating from the at least one functional metal halide electrolyte onto a thermally conductive substrate; and introducing at least one of deuterium and tritium into the plated metal coating.

Calcined Polyethyleneimine Coated Optical Fibers for Distributed pH Monitoring at High Pressures and Temperatures

In the oil and gas, CO2 sequestration, H2 subsurface storage, and geothermal energy sectors, subsurface pH measurements are critical for monitoring the geochemical conditions and estimating potential corrosion rates of wellbore systems. Real-time pH measurements in these conditions are vital for detecting and predicting corrosion deterioration of wellbore components that may jeopardize the safety and continued operation of wellbore systems. Building off of earlier TiO2 based pH sensors and the known pH sensitivity of amine-based polymers, a coating based on the secondary amine polymer polyethyleneimine (PEI) was developed. The sensor coating was treated with a high temperature (500 °C) calcination procedure in air to convert it into a more stable oxidized coating capable of withstanding hot aqueous solutions without dissolving while retaining linear pH sensitivity from pH values between 2 and 11. The sensor performance was measured using optical transmission measurements in solutions of various pHs and using optical backscatter reflectometry for distributed pH sensing demonstration in wellbore-relevant pressures (up to 1000 psi) and temperatures (80 °C). A calibration curve with strong differentiation between acidic and alkaline pH was developed for both transmission-based and distributed pH measurements, using fixed wavelength transmission and integrated linear amplitude of backscattered light for distributed measurements.

Micro-tensile Properties of Fueled Irradiated AGR-2 TRISO-coated Particle Buffer, IPyC, and SiC Interlayer Regions

Tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated nuclear fuel particles are proving to be a versatile fuel form for new reactor designs. Understanding the bounding strength and failure mode of each coating interface is important to both fuel quality evaluation and failure prediction. A mechanism of key significance is failure of the silicon carbide (SiC) layer to retain fission products due to incomplete tearing of the buffer layer. This is a two-step mechanism involving both mechanical failure in the buffer and inner pyrolytic carbon (IPyC) layers and degradation of the SiC layer through palladium silicides at the IPyC-SiC interface. However, the mechanical properties of TRISO particle coating layers have yet to be fully characterized due to the small dimension of TRISO fuel particles and high radioactivity. To investigate this mechanism, in situ micro-tensile properties of the buffer, IPyC, SiC, buffer-IPyC, and IPyC-SiC interlayer regions of fueled TRISO particles have been tested at both as-fabricated and irradiated conditions. Determination of the mechanical properties of these TRISO particle regions will lead to a better understanding of the SiC layer failure mechanism and enable progress towards TRISO fuel qualification.

Status Report on the Development of Cladding Inner-wall and Outer-wall Coatings

Advanced cladding is critical for nuclear reactors with enhanced performance in radiation tolerance, neutron transparency and reactor safety. Using advanced cladding will ensure the adequate thermal conductivity and mechanical stability of the cladding base material, corrosion resistance and high-temperature coolant compatibility of the cladding surface, and chemical stability in the cladding inner wall against fuel cladding chemical interaction (FCCI). An innovative cladding with a three-layer structure (i.e., a modified outer surface, a robust clad base material, and a modified inner wall) promises to meet all these requirements. In this status report, the initial efforts on the development of cladding inner-wall and outer-wall coatings are summarized. The activities covered in this report are (1) High-resolution TEM studies of TiN/HT-9 interface atomic structure and chemistry after ion irradiation, (2) High-resolution TEM studies of TiN/14YWT ODS interface atomic structure after thermal cycling, (3) Inner-wall TiN coating for an experimental 14YWT ODS cladding, and (4) Corrosion test of TiN coated Ziracloy-4 bar samples.

Melting temperature, emissivity, and thermal conductivity of rare-earth silicates for thermal and environmental barrier coatings

In recent years, rare-earth silicates have become the industry standard for coating state-of-the-art SiC ceramic matrix composite (CMC) gas turbine engine components, due to their low volatility, high melting point, and thermal shock resistance. Current research is focused on designing rare-earth silicate based thermal-environmental barrier coatings (T/EBCs) with improved resistance to CMAS (CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 ), steam, and crack formation, while maintaining high temperature performance and stability. Here, in this work we compare the high temperature performance of a variety of single and multi-component rare-earth mono- and disilicates (MS, DS) and rare earth apatites by measuring their melting points and spectrally averaged visible emissivities using laser heating and radiation pyrometry. We also report room temperature thermal conductivity measured by time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR).

Aperiodic optical coatings for neutral-color semi-transparent organic photovoltaics

Semi-transparent organic photovoltaics (ST-OPVs) have the potential for integration with windows for ubiquitous power generating applications. Typically, such applications require that ST-OPVs be neutrally transparent across the visible and exhibit both a high average photopic transmittance (APT) and color rendering index, as well as iso-energetic chromaticity coordinates. In this work, we demonstrate the design and use of optical coatings to achieve ST-OPVs with a neutral visible transmittance of APT = 50%, a power conversion efficiency of 8.3%, and optical properties that are independent of a ± 30° variation in the solar angle of incidence. As a result, these simple optical coatings are rapidly designed using a genetic algorithm and transfer matrix formalism.

Our ARPA-E funded project, New Environmental-Thermal Barrier Coatings for Ultrahigh Temperature Alloys, has made significant strides in advancing the understanding of design and fabrication of novel thermal barriers coatings. Through rigorous research and innovative approaches, our team has explored new frontiers, pushing the boundaries of knowledge in this critical field.
