The Impact of Void-finding Algorithms on Galaxy Classification

We explore how the definition of a void influences the conclusions drawn about the impact of the void environment on galactic properties using two void-finding algorithms in the Void Analysis Software Toolkit: Voronoi Voids (V 2 ), a Python implementation of ZOnes Bordering On Voidness (ZOBOV); and VoidFinder, an algorithm that grows and merges spherical void regions. Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we find that galaxies found in VoidFinder voids tend to be bluer and fainter and to have higher (specific) star formation rates than galaxies in denser regions. Conversely, galaxies found in V 2 voids show less significant differences when compared to galaxies in denser regions, less consistent with the large-scale environmental effects on galaxy properties expected from both simulations and previous observations. These results align with previous simulation results that show V 2 -identified voids “leak” into the dense walls between voids because their boundaries extend up to the density maxima in the walls. As a result, when using ZOBOV-based void-finders, galaxies likely to be part of wall regions are instead classified as void galaxies, a misclassification that can be critical to our understanding of galaxy evolution.

High resolution hydrologic routing with machine learning assisted waterbody classification

This software contains the code for a machine learning-based pipeline for creating persistent waterbody databases used in hydrologic routing. It consists of three components, 1) a PyTorch library (TorchWBType) for classifying/labeling arbitrary waterbodies into lakes and non-lakes, 2) a batch processing orchestrator (wbextractor) for delineating waterbodies from remote sensing imagery, and 3) graphing/analysis scripts for reproducing the plots in an associated journal article (LA-UR-24-22590).

Data-driven model construction for industrial asset decision boundary classification

In some embodiments, a system model construction platform may receive, from a system node data store, system node data associated with an industrial asset. The system model construction platform may automatically construct a data-driven, dynamic system model for the industrial asset based on the received system node data. A synthetic attack platform may then inject at least one synthetic attack into the data-driven, dynamic system model to create, for each of a plurality of monitoring nodes, a series of synthetic attack monitoring node values over time that represent simulated attacked operation of the industrial asset. The synthetic attack platform may store, in a synthetic attack space data source, the series of synthetic attack monitoring node values over time that represent simulated attacked operation of the industrial asset. This information may then be used, for example, along with normal operational data to construct a threat detection model for the industrial asset.

Software classification using phylogenetic techniques

Software, such as malware, may be classified using phylogenetic techniques. An evolutionary history of a representative set of software programs may be reconstructed to generate a reference phylogeny. Dynamic traces of the representative software programs may be obtained. The dynamic traces may include time-ordered sequences of execution commands extracted from running software binaries. Metrics may be developed using the dynamic traces. One or more unknown software programs may then be classified against the reference phylogeny using the metrics developed using the dynamic traces of the representative set of software programs.

Risk-Informed Approach for Event Selection and Component Classification

Develop a report summarizing a structured approach for the incorporation of risk insights when making facility safety assessments and regulatory decisions is proposed to supplement the deterministic approach, with the following expected benefits: Increased confidence that key safety issues have been fully identified and addressed Better understanding of safety margins Facilitates more structured dialogue among international regulators Reduced reliance on “expert judgement” through a rigorous, pre-defined process with more predictable outcomes Proposed outcome is development of a report summarizing the structure and key considerations for applying this approach that: Is inclusive of advanced reactor technologies Provides for flexible implementation recognizing unique and varying sovereign regulatory structures Builds upon existing/current GIF safety approaches (e.g., GIF Basic Safety Approach, Integrated Safety Assessment Methodology)
