Structure and magnetic properties of Ba 9 ⁢V 3 ⁢Te 15 with ferromagnetic spin chains

Here we report a ferromagnetic compound Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. It was synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and systematically investigated via structural, transport, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 mainly consists of trimerized face-sharing V⁢Te6 octahedral chains running along the 𝑐 axis, which are separated by a distance of 10.184⁢(8)⁢Å, thus demonstrating a strong 1D structural character. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 is a semiconductor with a band gap ∼128meV and undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with 𝑇C∼3.6K. Far above 𝑇C, the short-range spin orders due to the intrachain spin coupling have developed, which leads to a negative magnetoresistance effect, the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law and 𝑇1/2 dependence of magnetic heat capacity. Our results reveal that Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 provides a good opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of a system with quasi-1D ferromagnetic spin chains.

Investigation of the Anisotropy of Y-Ba-Cu-O Thin Films With Photoemission Electron Microscopy

Understanding the anisotropy in the electrical properties of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) is important for understanding the fundamental mechanism of superconductivity in unconventional superconductors. Additionally it is also essential for achieving uniform and controllable critical currents and resistances in YBCO Josephson junctions. Here, this study correlates work function measurements of different intrinsic regions on YBCO thin films, obtained through PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM), with in plane tunneling data and helium ion imaging. YBCO thin films, 40 nm in thickness, were selectively irradiated with 300 keV helium using a Pelletron to investigate the effects of irradiation compared to unirradiated regions. Post-irradiation PEEM images revealed distinct contrasts between irradiated and non-irradiated regions, suggesting a metal-to-insulator transition. In non-irradiated areas, a domain pattern was detected, showing a 25 meV difference in work function, attributed to CuO and BaO rich surface regions. A similar domain structure was observed using high-resolution helium ion imaging; however, the helium ion beam can damage the YBCO, making PEEM a valuable non-destructive alternative. This work highlights the correlation between PEEM measurements and in-plane tunneling properties of YBCO, providing insights into material orientation and its impact on Josephson junction performance. Furthermore, it offers a non-destructive approach to understanding the anisotropy of cuprate materials, its superconducting properties, and the factors affecting Josephson junction performance.

Completing the Ba–As Compositional Space: Synthesis and Characterization of Three New Binary Zintl Arsenides, Ba3As4, Ba5As4, and Ba16As11

Three novel binary barium arsenides, Ba3As4, Ba5As4, and Ba16As11, were synthesized and their crystal and electronic structures were investigated. Structural data collected via the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method indicate that the anionic substructures of all three novel compounds are composed of structural motifs based on the homoatomic As–As contacts, with [As2]4− dimers found in Ba5As4 and Ba16As11, and an [As4]6− tetramer found in Ba3As4. Ba3As4 and Ba5As4 crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal system—with the non-centrosymmetric space group Fdd2 (a = 15.3680(20) Å, b = 18.7550(30) Å, c = 6.2816(10) Å) for the former, and the centrosymmetric space group Cmce (a = 16.8820(30) Å, b = 8.5391(16) Å, and c = 8.6127(16) Å) for the latter—adopting Eu3As4 and Eu5As4 structure types, respectively. The heavily disordered Ba16As11 structure was solved in the tetragonal crystal system with the space group P4¯21m (a = 12.8944(12) Å and c = 11.8141(17) Å). The Zintl concept can be applied to each of these materials as follows: Ba3As4 = (Ba2+)3[As4]6−, Ba5As4 = (Ba2+)5(As3−)2[As2]4−, and 2 × Ba16As11 = (Ba2+)32(As3−) ≈ 20[As2]4− ≈ 1, pointing to the charge-balanced nature of these compounds. Electronic structure calculations indicate narrow bandgap semiconducting behavior, with calculated bandgaps of 0.47 eV for Ba3As4, 0.34 eV for Ba5As4, and 0.33 eV for Ba16As11.

Luna 16 - Some Li, K, Rb, Sr, Ba, rare-earth, Zr, and Hf concentrations.

Concentrations of Li, K, Rb, Sr, Na, rare-earths, Zr and Hf have been determined for some Luna 16 core materials by mass-spectrometric isotope-dilution. Two regolith fines samples from different depths in the core, and four rock-chips, including both igneous rocks and breccias, have similar trace-element concentrations. The Luna 16 materials have general lunar trace-element characteristics but differ from other returned lunar samples in a manner that suggests the presence of excess feldspar. Unless the Luna 16 igneous rocks are fused soils, they appear to represent either partial plagioclase cumulates or the least differentiated igneous material yet returned from the moon. The similarity in trace-element concentrations of the igneous rocks and the fines would then suggest largely local derivation of the Luna 16 regolith.
