Lawrence Graduate Research Scholar, Allegra Mayer, 2021 (Final Report)

Carbon storage in tropical forest soil depends on the balance between large C inputs from high rates of productivity, and high rates of soil C loss due to rapid decomposition rates. Disturbances to tropical forests, including severe hurricanes, could result in globally significant fluxes of C either to or from forest soils. Severe hurricane events are increasing in frequency in the tropics, yet the vulnerability of soil carbon to a frequent severe hurricane regime is unknown. By constraining a model with samples from before and after three major hurricanes within thirty years, this study examines the cycling of C between soil pools and with depth, under conditions marked by sudden organic matter pulses, rapid shifts in forest structure, and fast decomposition rates.

2021 Microbial U (Summary Report)

The US nuclear industry is on the cusp of significant growth in the areas of advanced reactors, SMRs, and microreactors. The existing commercial nuclear reactor fleet is considering expanding the life of the reactor cores by slightly increasing enrichment of their fuel. The common thread is the demand for High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU). A technical challenge exists with a blend down of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) from spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the “Y12” specifications. U-236 impacts reactor performance and is not desired in fresh fuel cores. In order to meet tight specifications, U-236 must be diluted by addition of fresh HEU. Fresh HEU is highly sought after and not plentiful in the US. A solution to this issue lies in the application of a technology to selectively remove the U-236 with non-hazardous microorganisms, which will be evaluated in this project by experimentally separating different isotopes of uranium.

Floating Photovoltaic System Cost Benchmark: Q1 2021 Installations on Artificial Water Bodies

In this report, we conduct a bottom-up analysis of the installed costs for FPV systems deployed on artificial water bodies under average site conditions (wind load of about 40 m/s, snow load of 20 psf, water depth of 50 m, water level variation of 10 m, and swell height of 1 m). We estimate an installed system cost premium of $\$0.26$/WDC (25%) for 10-MWDC fixed-tilt FPV systems, compared with ground-mounted, fixed-tilt PV installed over bare ground. Higher structural costs related to the floats and anchoring system are the largest contributors to this premium. Currently, site investigation costs are also higher for FPV because of the additional effort needed to plan and design these more complex installations. Our preliminary sensitivity analysis shows that the installed cost of FPV systems is most sensitive to float costs, wind and snow loading, and module efficiency. FPV deployment is in an early stage, and additional experience, best practice development, and new configurations and technologies could help reduce the costs of FPV systems over time.

ExaSGD: 2021 Kernel Thrust Activities

The Kernel Thrust milestone ADSE22-214 covers the development of device-capable optimization algorithms and solvers technologies required by the ExaSGD project’s software stack in order to solve security-constrained alternating current optimal power flow (SC-ACOPF) problems on emerging exascale architectures. To this extent, in FY21 the main objective of the Kernel Thrust was (i) provide robust optimization solver(s) that run efficiently on hardware accelerator devices (i.e., NVIDIA and AMD GPUs) to perform intra-node computations and (ii) provide coarse-grain parallel optimization capabilities that exploit the decomposition opportunities present in the SC-ACOPF challenge problems to provide exascale-capable solvers.

Future Automotive Systems Technology Simulator (FASTSim) Validation Report - 2021

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Future Automotive Systems Technology Simulator (FASTSim) captures the most important factors influencing vehicle power demands and performs large-scale fuel efficiency calculations very quickly. These features make FASTSim well suited to evaluate a representative distribution of real-world fuel efficiency over a large quantity of in-use driving profiles, which have become increasingly available in recent years owing to incorporation of Global Positioning System data collection into various travel surveys and studies. In addition, by being open source, computationally lightweight, freely available, and free from expensive third-party software requirements, analyses conducted using FASTSim may be easily replicated and critiqued in an open forum. This is highly desirable for situations in which technical experts seek to reach consensus over questions about what vehicle development plans or public interest strategies could maximize fuel savings and minimize adverse environmental impacts with an evolving vehicle fleet. While FASTSim continues to be refined and improved on an ongoing basis, this report compiles available runs using versions of the tool from the past few years to provide illustrative comparisons of the model results against measured data.

Fiscal Year 2021 Filtration of Hanford Tank 241-AP-107 Supernatant Samples Obtained at Prototypic Tank Level and Filtered at 16 °C

Bench-scale filtration testing of 8.5 liters of supernatant from Hanford waste tank 241-AP-107, chilled to 16 °C, was conducted using a backpulse dead-end filter (BDEF) filtration system equipped with a feed vessel and a Mott inline filter Model 6610 (Media Grade 5) in the hot cells of the Radiochemical Processing Laboratory at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This was done to assess the impact of a lower sampling location within the tank as well the lowered filtration temperature on supernatant stability and fouling. The as-received samples were transferred to 1.5-liter poly bottles and held at 16 °C for approximately 1 week prior to filtration. The feed was filtered through the BDEF system at a targeted flux of 0.065 gpm/ft 2 to match the prototypic operation of the TSCR system. During the initial period of filtration, the differential pressure required to effect filtration at 0.065 gpm/ft 2 increased until it reached 2 psid [the Tank Side Cesium Removal (TSCR) action limit] at 26 hours. After this, the filter was backpulsed to dislodge accumulated solids and reduce this pressure differential. An additional eight backpulses were conducted during the initial filtration period; each time, the target pressure was reached sooner than during the previous interval. Volume filtered decreased from 0.9 to 0.03 m 3 /m 2 over the course of 14 processing hours. After the ninth backpulse, the backpulse frequency had become unsustainable, and it was decided to perform an extensive filter cleaning. The filter was cleaned by draining the chilled AP-107 feed into chilled holding containers, introducing 0.1 M NaOH into the feed vessel, and recirculating the NaOH through the system for 20 minutes before allowing the system to soak for 2 hours without temperature control. A measurable decrease in filter resistance during this recirculation indicated that the 0.1 M NaOH was likely dissolving some of the solids that had deposited on the filter. Post cleaning, the filter resistance was effectively restored to initial conditions as the initial transmembrane pressure was restored to original levels. However, resumed processing of the AP-107 feed at 16 °C continued to result in an increased rate of filter resistance. An additional five backpulses were conducted (four during feed processing, one during subsequent cleaning) before the conclusion of the test. Solids concentrated from the backpulse solutions displayed sodium oxalate-type phases, Al-oxides and sodium Al-oxides/carbonates, iron oxides, and Ca-bearing phases (calcite). The scanning electron microscopy analyses also revealed a large distribution of particles, with some particles, notably sodium phosphate dodecahydrate, having diameters close to 0.5 mm.
