Numerous inorganic materials have been identified as potential candidates for high-performance photocatalysts. However, their solar-to-energy conversion efficiencies still fail to meet commercial requirements. Here, the main hurdle is the rapid recombination of photoexcited electrons and holes in single-phase materials. A viable predicted approach to suppress charge recombination is coupling two materials to form a two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure that physically separates photoinduced electrons and holes in different layers. In this work, the heterostructure-based paradigm was tested and a scalable solution synthesis of epitaxial ZnO-MoS 2 heterostructure was developed. A 2D ZnO-MoS 2 heterostructure was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by stabilizing intermediate Zn-hydroxide states on a functionalized MoS 2 surface. Detailed characterization showed the formation of multilayer heterostructure with MoS 2 flakes intercalated between large size ZnO plates. The performance of this heterostructure was evaluated using photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B. A degradation efficiency of 70% was measured within 90 minutes of visible-light irradiation, almost doubling the efficiency of the corresponding single-phase materials or their physical mixtures.

The switching kinetics of RF-magnetron reactively sputtered ~200 nm thick Zn 1-x Mg x O (ZMO) ferroelectric thin films with x = 0.41 and x = 0.27 prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates were studied at applied fields near the coercive fields, ranging from 3.4 to 5.1 MV cm -1 , and at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 100 °C. Polarization reversal in ZMO followss the Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi kinetics model for nucleation and growth at applied fields near the coercive field, and obeys an individual column switching (ICS) model at higher applied fields required to switch most of the spontaneous polarization. Switching in the high-applied field regime can be described using either the Gaussian or inverse gamma distribution functions depending on the mole fraction of magnesium in the film. The switching current transients of the high-Mg content ZMO film (x = 0.41) are always bi-modal, whereas the low Mg composition film (x = 0.27) is described by the Gaussian distribution initially following wake-up, and becomes bimodal with continued cycling. Rayleigh-like behavior of the dielectric constant revealed a simultaneous increase of the irreversible and decrease of the reversible contributions to the dielectric constant, which was ascribed to an increase in the density of mobile domain walls with cycling and resulted in faster switching.

Reversible metal electrodeposition (RME) for dynamic windows is a promising alternative to traditional electrochromics. We explore the reasons behind the bistability of practical RME dynamic windows under a wide temperature range, i.e., how well they maintain their dark state without external power. While Zn dynamic windows with dimethyl sulfoxide electrolytes exhibit adequate bistability at room temperature, their performance degrades at elevated temperatures due to the presence of small amounts of water. Here, to overcome this problem, we developed a set of Zn nitrile electrolytes. The integrated devices can maintain dark-state bistability over at least 1 month at 85°C with 0.1% transmission using a propionitrile (PrCN) electrolyte. Additionally, the PrCN-based Zn dynamic windows possess high optical contrast, color-neutral switching, and promising cyclability, making Zn RME in nitrile electrolytes a promising solution for achieving robust dynamic windows.

Raney Ni treatment is introduced to the surface of Ni mesh anode electrodes, enhancing liquid alkaline water electrolyzer performance. The surface of the Ni mesh is alloyed with Zn, deposited by either an aqueous infiltration of Zn salt or direct reaction with Zn foil. The extent of alloying is controlled by a heat treatment step. For both processes, fine porosity and enhanced surface area are obtained after leaching the Zn out of the surface alloy layer. The observed electrode surface structure and performance is quite sensitive to the thermal treatment temperature. The enhanced surface area improves full cell performance by 90 mV for infiltrated Zn treated at 600 °C and by 185 mV for Zn foil reacted at 425 °C (at 2 A cm −2 and 80 °C). In conclusion, the Zn treatment methods produce stable operating performance, exhibiting no decay after 150 h for the infiltrated Zn treated at 600 °C, and a decay rate of 4.6 μV h −1 over 100 h for the Zn foil reacted at 425 °C (at 1 A cm −2 and 80 °C).
