Tuning the Product Selectivity of Single-Atom Alloys by Active Site Modification

There is widespread interest in developing catalysts with uniform active sites that consist of single atoms, thereby simplifying the reaction mechanism and improving product selectivity. Here, we examine experimentally how CO can be used to modify the active sites on a strong binding single-atom alloy and examine how this in turn impacts product selectivity for a reaction that has two different pathways. Specifically, we find that CO can be used to selectively block isolated Rh atom active sites in a RhCu(111) model single-atom alloy catalyst surface and promote the dehydrogenation pathway for adsorbed ethyl groups by suppressing the hydrogenation pathway.

Tuning Enzyme Thermostability via Computationally Guided Covalent Stapling and Structural Basis of Enhanced Stabilization

Enhancing the thermostability of enzymes without impacting their catalytic function represents an important yet challenging goal in protein engineering and biocatalysis. We recently introduced a novel method for enzyme thermostabilization that relies on the computationally guided installation of genetically encoded thioether “staples” into a protein via cysteine alkylation with the noncanonical amino acid O-2-bromoethyl tyrosine (O2beY). Here, we demonstrate the functionality of an expanded set of electrophilic amino acids featuring chloroacetamido, acrylamido, and vinylsulfonamido side-chain groups for protein stapling using this strategy. Using a myoglobin-based cyclopropanase as a model enzyme, our studies show that covalent stapling with pchloroacetamido-phenylalanine (pCaaF) provides higher stapling efficiency and enhanced stability (thermodynamic and kinetic) compared to the other stapled variants and the parent protein. Interestingly, molecular simulations of conformational flexibility of the cross-links show that the pCaaF staple allows fewer energetically feasible conformers than the other staples, and this property may be a broader indicator of stability enhancement. Using this strategy, pCaaF-stapled variants with significantly enhanced stability against thermal denaturation (ΔT m ' = +27 °C) and temperature-induced heme loss (ΔT 50 = +30 °C) were obtained while maintaining high levels of catalytic activity and stereoselectivity. Crystallographic analyses of singly and doubly stapled variants provide key insights into the structural basis for stabilization, which includes both direct interactions of the staples with protein residues and indirect interactions through adjacent residues involved in heme binding. This work expands the toolbox of protein stapling strategies available for protein stabilization.

Tuning the Conductivity of Hexa-Zirconium(IV) Metal–Organic Frameworks by Encapsulating Heterofullerenes

Electrical conductivity in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has a great potential for energy storage applications and electrocatalysis. Zirconium-based MOFs such as NU-901 and NU-1000 have a low electrical conductivity due to the redox innocence of Zr–oxo bonds. Recently, it has been shown that the electrical conductivity of NU-901 can be increased by 11 orders of magnitude by physically encapsulating fullerene (C 60 ) in its diamond pore. This effect is due to the host–guest interaction between the electron-rich 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoate)pyrene (TBAPy 4– ) organic linkers of NU-901 (host) and the electron-poor fullerene (guest). Herein, we used density functional theory to study heterofullerene (C 59 X; X = B, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, and Sn) encapsulation in NU-901. Furthermore, our study suggests that encapsulated heterofullerenes enhance the electrical conductivity of the NU-901 MOF even further than C 60 .

Tuning Magnetic Symmetry and Properties in the Olivine Series Li 1–x Fe x Mn 1–x PO 4 through Selective Delithiation

In this work, we present the first in-depth study of the nuclear and magnetic structures of the fully lithiated LiFe x Mn 1–x PO 4 solid solutions as well as the partially delithiated Li 1– xFe x Mn 1–x PO 4 series using neutron powder diffraction. By using a weak oxidizing solution that only oxidizes Fe 2+ , we find that lithium can be removed from these olivines in a stepwise manner. Representational analysis was performed on the observed magnetic reflections and found that the lithiated solid solutions order in the magnetic space group Pnma', which is identical to triphylite (LiFePO 4 ). We report that, even when removing 20% of the lithium from the hcp lattice, the magnetic structure changes and multiple magnetic contributions are needed to fully encompass the observed magnetic order. We find that the partially delithiated x = 0.2 and 0.3 have a magnetic structure P2 1 '/n11, and when x surpasses 0.3, the magnetic structure changes to P2 1 2 1 2 1 . We give a detailed report on the effect of delithiation on magnetic order, bond distances/angles, and the super- and supersuperexchange interactions in the material. The symmetries of the magnetic order of these solid solutions are then discussed with regard to their potential as ferrotoroidic candidates.
