Effects of casing treatment on a small, transonic axial-flow compressor

Improved axial compressor surge margin through effective rotor casing treatment has been identified from test results on large axial compressors. A modified scale of a large compressor was built and tested to determine if similar improvements in surge margin could be duplicated in small-size turbomachinery. In addition, the effects of rotor radial running clearance, both with and without casing treatment, were investigated and are discussed. Test results of the scale configuration are presented and compared to the parent compressor.

Effect of slotted casing treatment with change in Reynolds number index on performance of a jet engine

A tip-treated J85-13 engine was tested at Reynolds number indices (RNI) of 0.3 and 0.7 with a clean inlet for 80- and 100-percent corrected engine speeds. This engine was equipped with a compressor case which allowed changes to the case wall over the rotor tips of six of its eight stages. For all tests, the principal effects were (1) with tip treatment, a stall pressure ratio loss of 6 percent at 100 percent corrected engine speeds for both the 0.3 and 0.7 RNI, and (2) with and without tip treatment, decreasing the RNI from 0.7 to 0.3 decreased the stall pressure ratio 3.8 percent for 100 percent corrected engine speed and 2.8 percent for 80-percent corrected engine speed.

Review of current interest and research in water hyacinth-based wastewater treatment

The status of activity in the user community for water hyacinth-based wastewater treatment was evaluated. The principal technique used was that of interviewing people who either (1) were known to be engaged in hyacinth research or development or (2) had made inquiry to NASA about hyacinth systems. About 40 non-research organizations and a similar number of research organizations were contacted. As a result of the interviews and a review of the relevant literature, it was concluded that hyacinth systems have the potential for providing a lower cost way for small cities to meet increasingly stringent effluent requirements. A limited amount of full-scale demonstration of hyacinth systems has been carried out during the past two years, but the yield of design data has been small. Several organizations are currently planning construction of experimental full-scale hyacinth-based wastewater treatment systems during 1977-1978.

An experimental study of the effects of water repellant treatment on the acoustic properties of Kevlar

The treatment consisted of immersing samples of Kevlar in a solution of distilled water and Zepel. The samples were then drained, dried in a circulating over, and cured. Flow resistance tests showed approximately one percent decrease in flow resistance of the samples. Also there was a density increase of about three percent. It was found that the treatment caused a change in the texture of the samples. There were significant changes in the acoustic properties of the treated Kevlar over the frequency range 0.5 to 3.5 kHz. In general it was found that the propagation constant and characteristic impedance increased with increasing frequency. The real and imaginary components of the propagation constant for the treated Kevlar exhibited a decrease of 8 to 12 percent relative to that for the untreated Kevlar at the higher frequencies. The magnitude of the reactance component of the characteristic impedance decreased by about 40 percent at the higher frequencies.

Effect of casing treatment on performance of a two-stage high-pressure-ratio fan

A two-stage fan, previously tested with a solid casing, was tested with a casing with circumferential grooves over the tips of both rotors (casing treatment). Tests were conducted at 80 and 100 percent of design speed with uniform flow. The casing treatment improved the flow range and stall margin significantly without changing the characteristics overall performance curves of total-pressure and efficiency as functions of weight flow, other than extending them to lower weight flows.

Analysis, design, and test of acoustic treatment in a laboratory inlet duct

A suppression prediction program based on the method of modal analysis for spinning mode propagation in a circular duct was used in the analytical design of optimized, multielement, Kevlar bulk-absorber treatment configurations for an inlet duct. The NASA-Langley ANRL anechoic chamber using the spinning mode synthesizer as a sound source was used to obtain in-duct spinning mode measurements, radial mode measurements, and far-field traverses, as well as aerodynamic measurements. The measured suppression values were compared to predicted values, using the in-duct, forward-traveling, radial-mode content as the source for the prediction. The performance of the treatment panels was evaluated from the predicted and measured data. Although experimental difficulties were encountered at the design condition, sufficient information was obtained to confirm the expectation that it is the panel impedance components which are critical to suppression at a single frequency, not the particular construction materials. The agreement obtained between measurement and prediction indicates that the analytical program can be used as an accurate, reliable, and useful design tool.

Rapid, single-step most-probable-number method for enumerating fecal coliforms in effluents from sewage treatment plants

A single-step most-probable-number method for determining the number of fecal coliform bacteria present in sewage treatment plant effluents is discussed. A single growth medium based on that of Reasoner et al. (1976) and consisting of 5.0 gr. proteose peptone, 3.0 gr. yeast extract, 10.0 gr. lactose, 7.5 gr. NaCl, 0.2 gr. sodium lauryl sulfate, and 0.1 gr. sodium desoxycholate per liter is used. The pH is adjusted to 6.5, and samples are incubated at 44.5 deg C. Bacterial growth is detected either by measuring the increase with time in the electrical impedance ratio between the innoculated sample vial and an uninnoculated reference vial or by visual examination for turbidity. Results obtained by the single-step method for chlorinated and unchlorinated effluent samples are in excellent agreement with those obtained by the standard method. It is suggested that in automated treatment plants impedance ratio data could be automatically matched by computer programs with the appropriate dilution factors and most probable number tables already in the computer memory, with the corresponding result displayed as fecal coliforms per 100 ml of effluent.

Effects of erodant particle shape and various heat treatments on erosion resistance of plain carbon steel

Erosion tests were conducted on 1045 steel samples which had been subjected to different heat treatments. The weight of material removed upon erosion with glass beads and crushed glass was measured. The data show that there is no correlation between hardness and erosion resistance. The erosion rate was strongly dependent on the shape of erodant particles, being an order of magnitude higher for erosion with crushed glass than with glass beads. Heat treatment had a profound effect on the erosion resistance when the erodant particles were glass beads but little or no effect when the particles were crushed glass. It is thus concluded that different mechanisms of material removal are involved with these two erodants. This conclusion is supported by the surface morphology of annealed 1045 steel samples which had been eroded by these two types of erodant particles. SEM micrographs of the eroded surfaces show that for erosion with glass beads it is deformation induced fracture of surface layers.

Evaluation of the Acoustic Measurement Capability of the NASA Langley V/STOL Wind Tunnel Open Test Section with Acoustically Absorbent Ceiling and Floor Treatments

The single source location used for helicopter model studies was utilized in a study to determine the distances and directions upstream of the model accurate at which measurements of the direct acoustic field could be obtained. The method used was to measure the decrease of sound pressure levels with distance from a noise source and thereby determine the Hall radius as a function of frequency and direction. Test arrangements and procedures are described. Graphs show the normalized sound pressure level versus distance curves for the glass fiber floor treatment and for the foam floor treatment.

Cost of phosphate removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants

Construction and operating costs of advanced wastewater treatment for phosphate removal at municipal wastewater treatment plants have been investigated on orders from the Federal Environmental Bureau in Berlin. Particular attention has been paid to applicable kinds of precipitants for pre-, simultaneous and post-precipitation as well as to different phosphate influent and effluent concentrations. The article offers detailed comments on determination of technical data, investments, capital costs, operating costs and annual costs as well as potential cost reductions resulting from precipitation. Selected results of the cost investigation are shown in graphical form as specific investments, operating and annual costs depending on wastewater flow.

An analysis of rotor blade twist variables associated with different Euler sequences and pretwist treatments

A nonlinear analysis which is necessary to adequately model elastic helicopter rotor blades experiencing moderately large deformations was examined. The analysis must be based on an appropriate description of the blade's deformation geometry including elastic bending and twist. Built-in pretwist angles complicate the deformation process ant its definition. Relationships between the twist variables associated with different rotation sequences and corresponding forms of the transformation matrix are lasted. Relationships between the twist variables associated with first, the pretwist combined with the deformation twist are included. Many of the corresponding forms of the transformation matrix for the two cases are listed. It is shown that twist variables connected with the combined twist treatment are related to those where the pretwist is applied initially. A method to determine the relationships and some results are outlined. A procedure to evaluate the transformation matrix that eliminates the Eulerlike sequence altogether is demonstrated. The resulting form of the transformation matrix is unaffected by rotation sequence or pretwist treatment.

The response of cobalt-free Udimet 700 type alloy to modified heat treatments

A superalloy based on Udimet 700, in which all of the cobalt was replaced by nickel, was prepared from hot isostatically pressed prealloyed powders. This material was given various heat treatments consisting of partial solutioning and aging in a sequence of four different temperatures. Comparisons were made of microstructures and mechanical properties. Best results were obtained by partially solutioning at 1145 deg C and aging through a sequence of 870, 1030, 650 and 760 deg C. This heat treatment also provided significantly improved properties for wrought material of the same composition. The results suggest that cobalt free Udimet 700 should be considered as a substitute for Udimet 700 with the standard 17 percent cobalt content.

The Sensitivity of Solar Eigenfrequencies to the Treatment of the Equation of State

The principal uncertainties in the equation of state involve the treatment of pressure ionization, the Debye-Huckel coulomb corrections, and the treatment of many-particle interaction effects. It is found that, for the lowest degree modes (l between 0 and 3), the terms and procedures used in the equation of state which deal with these uncertainties introduce changes in the frequencies which are less than 4 micro Hz. Recently, Shibahashi, Noels and Gabriel (1983) published solar eigenfrequencies using a theory with an equation of state improved with respect to the theory used earlier by Shibahashi and Osaki (1981). Their comparison between the two sets of results suggested that uncertainties in the frequencies as large as 10 micro Hz could be caused by the equation of state. It is felt that since the entire effect of the uncertain terms is only 4 micro Hz and since the uncertainties are only a fraction of each term, the 10 micro Hz changes found by Shibahashi et al must be a consequence of differences between the earlier and later calculations in areas other than the equation of state.

Design of sidewall treatment of cabin noise control of a twin engine turboprop aircraft

An analytical procedure was used to predict the noise transmission into the cabin of a twin engine general aviation aircraft. This model was then used to optimize the interior A weighted noise levels to an average value of about 85 dBA. The surface pressure noise spectral levels were selected utilizing experimental flight data and empirical predictions. The add on treatments considered in this optimization study include aluminum honeycomb panels, constrained layer damping tape, porous acoustic blankets, acoustic foams, septum barriers and limp trim panels which are isolated from the vibration of the main sidewall structure. To reduce the average noise level in the cabin from about 102 kBA (baseline) to 85 dBA (optimized), the added weight of the noise control treatment is about 2% of the total gross takeoff weight of the aircraft.

Ultrasonic verification of microstructural changes due to heat treatment

Ultrasonic attenuation was measured for polycrystalline samples of nickel and copper with various grain-size distributions produced by heat treatment. Attenuation as a function of frequency was determined for a sample having a known mean grain diameter. Once this function was determined, it could be scaled to determine the mean grain size of other samples of the same material with different mean grain diameters. These results were obtained by using broadband pulse-echo ultrasound in the 25 to 100 MHz frequency range. The results suggest an ultrasonic, nondestructive approach for verifying heat treatment of metals.
