Hard Real-Time: C++ Versus RTSJ

In the domain of hard real-time systems, which language is better: C++ or the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ)? Although ordinary Java provides a more productive programming environment than C++ due to its automatic memory management, that benefit does not apply to RTSJ when using NoHeapRealtimeThread and non-heap memory areas. As a result, RTSJ programmers must manage non-heap memory explicitly. While that's not a deterrent for veteran real-time programmers-where explicit memory management is common-the lack of certain language features in RTSJ (and Java) makes that manual memory management harder to accomplish safely than in C++. This paper illustrates the problem for practitioners in the context of moving data and managing memory in a real-time producer/consumer pattern. The relative ease of implementation and safety of the C++ programming model suggests that RTSJ has a struggle ahead in the domain of hard real-time applications, despite its other attractive features.

Design of reduced-order state estimators for linear time-varying multivariable systems

The design of reduced-order state estimators for linear time-varying multivariable systems is considered. Employing the concepts of matrix operators and the method of canonical transformations, this paper shows that there exists a reduced-order state estimator for linear time-varying systems that are 'lexicography-fixedly observable'. In addition, the eigenvalues of the estimator can be arbitrarily assigned. A simple algorithm is proposed for the design of the state estimator.

Rewriting Modulo SMT and Open System Analysis

This paper proposes rewriting modulo SMT, a new technique that combines the power of SMT solving, rewriting modulo theories, and model checking. Rewriting modulo SMT is ideally suited to model and analyze infinite-state open systems, i.e., systems that interact with a non-deterministic environment. Such systems exhibit both internal non-determinism, which is proper to the system, and external non-determinism, which is due to the environment. In a reflective formalism, such as rewriting logic, rewriting modulo SMT can be reduced to standard rewriting. Hence, rewriting modulo SMT naturally extends rewriting-based reachability analysis techniques, which are available for closed systems, to open systems. The proposed technique is illustrated with the formal analysis of: (i) a real-time system that is beyond the scope of timed-automata methods and (ii) automatic detection of reachability violations in a synchronous language developed to support autonomous spacecraft operations.

Synthesis procedure for linear time-varying feedback systems with large parameter ignorance

The development of synthesis procedures for linear time-varying feedback systems is considered. It is assumed that the plant can be described by linear differential equations with time-varying coefficients; however, ignorance is associated with the plant in that only the range of the time-variations are known instead of exact functional relationships. As a result of this plant ignorance the use of time-varying compensation is ineffective so that only time-invariant compensation is employed. In addition, there is a noise source at the plant output which feeds noise through the feedback elements to the plant input. Because of this noise source the gain of the feedback elements must be as small as possible. No attempt is made to develop a stability criterion for time-varying systems in this work.

Near real-time stereo vision system

The apparatus for a near real-time stereo vision system for use with a robotic vehicle is described. The system is comprised of two cameras mounted on three-axis rotation platforms, image-processing boards, a CPU, and specialized stereo vision algorithms. Bandpass-filtered image pyramids are computed, stereo matching is performed by least-squares correlation, and confidence ranges are estimated by means of Bayes' theorem. In particular, Laplacian image pyramids are built and disparity maps are produced from the 60 x 64 level of the pyramids at rates of up to 2 seconds per image pair. The first autonomous cross-country robotic traverses (of up to 100 meters) have been achieved using the stereo vision system of the present invention with all computing done onboard the vehicle. The overall approach disclosed herein provides a unifying paradigm for practical domain-independent stereo ranging.

Transition flight control room automation

The Workstation Prototype Laboratory is currently working on a number of projects which can have a direct impact on ground operations automation. These projects include: (1) The fuel cell monitoring system (FCMS), which will monitor and detect problems with the fuel cells on the shuttle. FCMS will use a combination of rules (forward/backward) and multithreaded procedures, which run concurrently with the rules, to implement the malfunction algorithms of the EGIL flight controllers. The combination of rule-based reasoning and procedural reasoning allows us to more easily map the malfunction algorithms into a real-time system implementation. (2) A graphical computation language (AGCOMPL) is an experimental prototype to determine the benefits and drawbacks of using a graphical language to design computations (algorithms) to work on shuttle or space station telemetry and trajectory data. (3) The design of a system will allow a model of an electrical system, including telemetry sensors, to be configured on the screen graphically using previously defined electrical icons. This electrical model would then be used to generate rules and procedures for detecting malfunctions in the electrical components of the model. (4) A generic message management (GMM) system is being designed for real-time applications as a message management system which sends advisory messages to a user. The primary purpose of GMM is to reduce the risk of overloading a user with information when multiple failures occur and to assist the developer in the devising an explanation facility. The emphasis of our work is to develop practical tools and techniques, including identification of appropriate software tools to support research, application, and tool building activities, while determining the feasibility of a given approach.

Update on PIP-II beam pattern generator upgrade

The beam pattern generator enables the transfer of beam pulses from the PIP-II linac to the Booster ring, the two RF systems being non-harmonically related. It is synchronized to the timing system to provide beam arrival information to the downstream accelerator subsystems. The design is being upgraded with COTS components and is being developed with a collaboration with SLAC.The pattern generation, digital signal processing and the user interface to an external EPICS server are integrated onto the ARM processor of the SOCFPGA. The progress of the system development is described.

The Perils of AI-Assisted Time Conversion Critical Errors in J2000 Time to UNIX/UTC Conversions Using AI Assistants (Technical Memorandum)

This memo addresses a critical issue encountered when using AI assistants for time system conversions, specifically converting data tagged with J2000 seconds through UNIX time to UTC. Initial AI responses to this common conversion task were fundamentally incorrect, with errors exceeding 37 seconds - enough to cause significant issues in many applications. This document demonstrates the problem, quantifies the error, and provides best practices for using AI tools safely in technical work. Both Claude 4.5 Sonnet and ChatGPT GPT-5.5 Thinking gave the same answer.

New bounds on parameter uncertainties for robust stability

The problem of robust stability in linear systems with parametric uncertainties is considered. A method is developed to determine bounds on uncertain parameters in the state-space model of the system, so that stability is preserved. Both continuous- and discrete-time systems are considered. Unlike previous results, the stability bounds are derived in terms of actual parameters instead of their absolute values, and consequently the stable region in the parameter space is not necessarily symmetric with respect to the origin. Furthermore, the uncertain parameters do not have to be linearly independent to each other.

Communications and control for electric power systems: Power system stability applications of artificial neural networks

This report investigates the application of artificial neural networks to the problem of power system stability. The field of artificial intelligence, expert systems, and neural networks is reviewed. Power system operation is discussed with emphasis on stability considerations. Real-time system control has only recently been considered as applicable to stability, using conventional control methods. The report considers the use of artificial neural networks to improve the stability of the power system. The networks are considered as adjuncts and as replacements for existing controllers. The optimal kind of network to use as an adjunct to a generator exciter is discussed.

Later endogenous circadian temperature nadir relative to an earlier wake time in older people

The contribution of the circadian timing system to the age-related advance of sleep-wake timing was investigated in two experiments. In a constant routine protocol, we found that the average wake time and endogenous circadian phase of 44 older subjects were earlier than that of 101 young men. However, the earlier circadian phase of the older subjects actually occurred later relative to their habitual wake time than it did in young men. These results indicate that an age-related advance of circadian phase cannot fully account for the high prevalence of early morning awakening in healthy older people. In a second study, 13 older subjects and 10 young men were scheduled to a 28-h day, such that they were scheduled to sleep at many circadian phases. Self-reported awakening from scheduled sleep episodes and cognitive throughput during the second half of the wake episode varied markedly as a function of circadian phase in both groups. The rising phase of both rhythms was advanced in the older subjects, suggesting an age-related change in the circadian regulation of sleep-wake propensity. We hypothesize that under entrained conditions, these age-related changes in the relationship between circadian phase and wake time are likely associated with self-selected light exposure at an earlier circadian phase. This earlier exposure to light could account for the earlier clock hour to which the endogenous circadian pacemaker is entrained in older people and thereby further increase their propensity to awaken at an even earlier time.

Time-varying linear systems and the theory of non-linear waves

The isospectral deformation of a Sturm-Liouville equation is extended to general linear time-varying systems and a method is described for determining the resulting nonlinear partial differential equations. Consideration is given to (1) isospectral deformation of I/O systems with boundary value conditions and (2) the spectral vector bundles attached to linear time-varying systems.

Garbage collection can be made real-time and verifiable

An efficient means of memory reclamation (also known as Garbage Collection) is essential for Machine Intelligence applications where dynamic storage allocation is desired or required. Solutions for real-time systems must introduce very small processing overhead and must also provide for the verification of the software in order to meet the application time budgets and to verify the correctness of the software. Garbage Collection (GC) techniques are proposed for symbolic processing systems which may simultaneously meet both real-time requirements and verification requirements. The proposed memory reclamation technique takes advantage of the strong points of both the earlier Mark and Sweep technique and the more recent Copy Collection approaches. At least one practical implementation of these new GC techniques has already been developed and tested on a very-high performance symbolic computing system. Complete GC processing of all generated garbage has been demonstrated to require as little as a few milliseconds to perform. This speed enables the effective operation of the GC function as either a background task or as an actual part of the application task itself.

Characteristic Elastic Systems of Time-Limited Optimal Maneuvers

Optimizing an elastic system and its active control is discussed. Maneuvers from an initial state to a final state in a finite time interval are considered. An active generalized control force that accomplishes the desired maneuver of a prespecified system is optimal if it minimizes a given quadratic cost function. By also varying a set of design parameters, the elastic system can be determined so as to further minimize the cost function. Here, the elastic system that minimizes the actual control cost is compared with the system that minimizes the ratio of actual cost to the cost of optimally maneuvering a rigid system of the same inertial properties. It is shown that an elastic system corresponding to an extremum of the ratio is actually a characteristic of the time-limited maneuver. Because both the spatial domain and the time interval are fixed, a characteristic elastic system is tuned to the specified temporal boundary conditions. The implication for rest-to-rest, spinup, and spin reversal maneuvers of spacecraft is that the optimal control for a characteristic elastic spacecraft is identical to the optimal control for the same spacecraft as if it were rigid.

NucD-23 Nuclear Diagnostics Development: The future of neutron imaging and gamma reaction history

The Neutron Imaging team has deployed novel, active detection systems along two lines of sight at NIF. Studies aimed to characterize NIS sensitivity to implosion shape will be carried out to further extend reconstruction capabilities. Additionally, an improved camera timing system that will reduce uncertainties stemming from bang time jitter will also be fielded. The NIF GRH data recording system is more then 10 years old needs to be updated. Bandwidth and noise are a key limiting factor for improving data quality. New high bandwidth and low noise components will be tested at OMEGA in advance before fielding the components at NIF.
