Grid Strength Analysis for Integrating 30 GW of Offshore Wind Generation by 2030 in the U.S. Eastern Interconnection: Preprint

Offshore wind is a key player in the transition to a decarbonized electric gird, and the United States has set ambitious goals of integrating 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 110 GW by 2050. To facilitate this integration, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are conducting the Atlantic Offshore Wind Transmission Study to assess transmission solutions. To achieve the 110-GW target by 2050, meticulous planning for network expansion and resource allocation is essential; however, meeting the 2030 goals requires integrating offshore wind power with minimal system upgrades, thus necessitating a careful study of grid strength and stability. The study team developed the Grid Strength Analysis Tool (GSAT) to assess system strength under various operating conditions and contingencies, focusing on the proposed integration of 30 GW of offshore wind power by 2030. In this paper, we provide a summary of key features of the GSAT software and results of the grid strength analysis for integrating 30 GW of offshore wind generation by 2030 in the U.S. Eastern Interconnection.

XRF-MAPS

x-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging typically involves the creation and analysis of 3D data sets, where at each scan position a full energy dispersive x-ray spectrum is recorded. This allows one to later process the data in a variety of different approaches, e.g., by spectral region of interest (ROI) summation with or without background subtraction, principal component analysis, or fitting. XRF-Maps is a C++ open source software package that implements these functions to provide a tool set for the analysis of XRF data sets.

Code Coverage Status of the ARC Code RCT

The Argonne Reactor Code (ARC) software system supports users in their fast reactor design goals by providing neutronic, thermal-hydraulic, and structural analysis capabilities. REBUS plays a pivotal role in the ARC system as the primary fuel cycle analysis capability for fast reactor problems. Over its 60 year history, ARC software usage with REBUS has been applied to numerous fast and thermal spectrum reactor analysis projects with good to excellent comparison against experiments. The RCT code is a later addition and uses the REBUS restart files to define its input. The RCT code was built to provide pin depletion details on EBR-II models and thus many features of RCT were specifically tailored to the needs of EBR-II models. Additional approximations were invoked which are likely only valid for the EBR-II reactor and the particular fuel management that was done for it. The purpose of the present work is to identify a set of test problems for RCT and assess the code coverage for those test problems. The goal is to document what parts of the existing RCT code are touched by the set of test problems and which are not. Because no detailed verification work has been done on RCT, the existing regression testing suite was chosen for the code coverage assessment. The code coverage analysis of RCT was performed with the Code Coverage Tool of the Intel Fortran compiler which requires modifications to the compilation of RCT. The detailed coverage tables are given for each part of RCT. As will be discussed and shown, some parts of the RCT capability that are known to be used by the EBR-II analysis work are not tested by the regression testing suite. These aspects should be resolved before major source code changes are taken for the RCT software. Because REBUS and DIF3D are not subroutines of RCT, the coverage changes in both of those codes is not altered by RCT. The same is true for all of the modules of DIF3D that are used by RCT such as SYSLIB and SEGLIB.

Catalyst Revised: Rethinking the ParaView in Situ Analysis and Visualization API

As in situ analysis goes mainstream, ease of development, deployment, and maintenance becomes essential, perhaps more so than raw capabilities. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Catalyst, an API for in situ analysis using ParaView, which we refactored with these objectives in mind. Furthermore, our implementation combines design ideas from in situ frameworks and HPC tools like Ascent and MPICH.

Quantitative insights for diagnosing performance bottlenecks in lithium–sulfur batteries

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries hold significant promise for electric vehicles and aviation due to their high energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, understanding the root causes of performance degradation remains a formidable challenge, as the interplay of multiple factors obscures key failure mechanisms. A major limitation has been the inability to quantify soluble sulfur species within practical detection limits accurately and to correlate electrochemical processes with associated physical inventory changes. Here, we introduce the high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet spectroscopy and gas chromatography sequential characterization (HUGS) toolkit, capable of precisely quantifying seven distinct sulfur and polysulfide species at concentrations as low as 40 ppb. HUGS has been successfully applied to practical coin and pouch cells without requiring cell modification. Furthermore, our self-developed software, Dr HUGS, enhanced the data analysis speed by over 30 times, enabling multi-source data integration and delivering comprehensive analysis results within minutes. Using HUGS, we identify significant capacity losses from inactive lithium and sulfur during initial cycles and sulfide-rich solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation on the anode during later cycles. Notably, our findings reveal that soluble polysulfides have minimal contributions to capacity loss, challenging long-standing assumptions. Moreover, HUGS demonstrates that constant-pressure setups in Li–S pouch cells improve compositional uniformity compared to constant-gap configurations. For sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) cathodes, unique issues such as non-sulfide SEI formation and lithium pulverization are observed, which can be mitigated through localized high-concentration electrolytes to enhance lithium inventory retention. By enabling precise quantification of critical inventory components, HUGS provides transformative insights into failure mechanisms across various electrolytes and cathode chemistries, guiding rational design strategies for next-generation energy storage systems.

3D ion gyro-orbit heat load predictions for NSTX-U

Abstract High power tokamaks operate with divertor heat loads capable of destroying the plasma facing components (PFCs). High fidelity heat load predictions are necessary to ascertain the PFC state for design and during operation. Typical heat flux calculations are 2D, time invariant, and assume that power flows directly along the magnetic field lines (the optical approximation). These assumptions neglect the complex 3D geometries employed to protect the PFCs, the time varying nature of the plasma and PFC thermal state, and the helical trajectories of ions with finite Larmor radii (the gyro-orbit approximation). An integrated software framework, the heat flux engineering analysis toolkit (HEAT), was developed to generate time varying optical heat loads applied to real engineering computer aided design (CAD) (Looby et al 2022 Fusion Sci. Technol. 78 10–27). Recently, an ion-gyro orbit module has been added to HEAT. This module calculates the helical trajectories of ions as they gyrate about the magnetic field lines using kinetic theory macro-particles to accelerate the calculation. First, the new gyro-orbit module will be presented. Next, a comparison to existing research is performed. Finally, an analysis of the gyro-orbit heat loads for NSTX-U is presented for diverted discharges using the engineering CAD models utilized for PFC fabrication. Including these gyro-orbit effects can enhance the PFC performance by ‘smearing’ out the magnetic shadows associated with the castellated fish-scaled geometry. Simultaneously, the helical trajectories can degrade performance when they load narrow regions on edges and corners with high heat fluxes. Analysis of the trade-offs between these competing effects is included, and regions for further investigation are identified.

Overview of ST40 results and future: expanding the physics basis of high-field spherical tokamaks

The goal of the ST40 programme is to explore the physics of high-field spherical tokamaks (STs), to validate empirical and theoretical models and, hence, to build confidence in predictions required to support the design of future generations of STs. ST40 is a compact high-field ST that has achieved the following parameters: R 0 = 0.4–0.55 m, I p = 0.20–0.85 MA, B t (R= 0.4 m) = 0.7–2.1 T, κ ⩽ 1.9, and A = 1.6–1.9. Highlights of recent experimental results include (i) H-mode and confinement studies at B t ⩽ 2.1 T, (ii) observation of bifurcation of the scrape-off-layer power fall-off width, λ q , into a ‘wide’ branch that follows existing H-mode scalings and a ‘narrow’ branch that exhibits λ q values that are up to 10 times lower than the predictions of established scalings, (iii) development of high-performance scenarios with plasma current, I p , up to 0.85 MA, (iv) development of highly non-inductive scenarios with high β p , and (v) the first ST40 experiments utilising the newly commissioned impurity powder dropper. The work on all these topics has been supported by a number of advancements in ST40 hardware and software, from plasma control to data analysis and interpretation. At the end of 2025, ST40 embarked on a major upgrade to further expand its capabilities by introducing, among other improvements, all-metal plasma-facing components, 1 MW of electron cyclotron heating, a pellet injector, and a pair of lithium evaporators for wall conditioning.

Diagnostic diagrams for ram pressure stripped candidates

ABSTRACT This paper presents a method for finding ram pressure stripped (RPS) galaxy candidates by performing a morphological analysis of galaxy images obtained from the Legacy survey. We consider a sample of about 600 galaxies located in different environments such as groups and clusters, tidally interacting pairs and the field. The sample includes 160 RPS previously classified in the literature into classes from J1 to J5, based on the increasing level of disturbances. Our morphological analysis was done using the astromorphlib software followed by the inspection of diagnostic diagrams involving combinations of different parameters like the asymmetry (A), concentration (C), Sérsic index (n), and bulge strength parameters $F(G,\, M_{20})$. We found that some of those diagrams display a distinct region in which galaxies classified as J3, J4, and J5 decouples from isolated galaxies. We call this region as the morphological transition zone and we also found that tidally interacting galaxies in pairs are predominant within this zone. Nevertheless, after visually inspecting the objects in the morphological transition zone to discard obvious contaminants, we ended up with 33 bona fide new RPS candidates in the studied nearby groups and clusters (Hydra, Fornax, and CLoGS sample), of which one-third show clear evidence of unwinding arms. Future works may potentially further increase significantly the samples of known RPS using such method.

Cryogenic System Preliminary Design for a 0.5m-Long, Conduction-Cooled Nb3Sn Undulator Magnet Prototype

There are several NbTi superconducting undulator (SCU) magnets currently in operation at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The development on Nb3Sn-based superconducting undulator magnets at APS is underway due to the potential to further enhance the performance of the SCUs. Superconducting undulator magnets need to keep temperature gradients minimized in order to retain thermal and operating current margin. We have designed the thermal links for efficient heat conduction using 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics software, which was later used for the calculation of the temperature distribution across a 0.5 m long, conduction-cooled, Nb3Sn undulator magnet prototype that includes both conductive heat transfer and radiative heating components. We have modelled the evolution of the thermal properties of the magnet winding as well as other cold parts during cool-down from ambient temperature with the operation of a SHI RDK-415D cryocooler to examine the estimated time that is needed for the cooldown as well as the baseline temperature we could achieve. A key result was that a maximum coil delta T = 0.11 K along the designed thermal links and a temperature range of 3.42 K-3.53 K for the winding were predicted at steady state. A pair of G10 support rods for carrying the magnet as well as a pair of current leads made of metals were also designed and optimized for the testing system, targeting for an operation temperature of 4 K and a coil current of 950 A DC.
