Single-frequency continuous output of laser is converted into series of high-power laser pulses at high repetition rates. Applications include pollutant detection by absorption, laser gain measurements at discrete wavelengths, laser propagation measurement, and laser plasma diagnostics.
System includes viewing devices that provide low interference to normal vision. It provides stereo display observable from broader area. Left and right video cameras are focused on object. Output signals from cameras are time provided by each camera. Multiplexed signal, fed to standard television monitor, displays left and right images of object.
Earth Resources photographs from Apollo 6, 7, and 9 and photographs taken during Gemini 4, were used in the research along with high altitude and conventional aerial photography. A unified land use and resource analysis system was devised and used to develop a mapping legend. The natural vegetation, land use, macrorelief, and landforms of northern Maricopa County, Arizona, were analyzed and inventoried. This inventory was interpreted in relation to the critical problem of urban expansion and agricultural production in the study area. The central thrust of the research program has been to develop methods for use of space and small-scale, high-altitude aerial photography to develop information for land use planning and resource allocation decisions.
A component is assumed to be subjected to a sequence of several groups of sinusoidal stresses. Each group consists of a specific number of cycles having the same maximum alternating stress level and the same mean stress level, the maximum alternating stress level being different from group to group. A method for predicting the reliability of components subjected to such loads is proposed, given their distributional alternating stress versus cycles-to-failure (S-N) diagram. It is called the 'conditional reliability-equivalent life' method. It is applied to four-cases using distributional fatigue data generated in the Reliability Research Laboratory of The University of Arizona, and the predicted reliabilities are compared and discussed.
A square root information filter/smoother is derived using recursive least-squares arguments. The combined filter/smoother algorithm has the following attributes: (1) it has a square root structure, which enhances numerical accuracy; (2) filter and smoother mechanizations are identical in form, facilitating implementation of the smoother; and (3) storage and computation requirements are modest compared with other smoothing algorithms. Partitioning the results to separate bias parameters provides further computational economies and reduction of storage requirements.
The development and characteristics of a sputtering apparatus are discussed. A potential difference is applied between the cathode and anode to produce a plasma for each target which is sputtered by accelerated ions within the plasma. The process of sputtering for various materials is described. Diagrams of the unit are provided.
A formal model is introduced which can serve as the basis for a theoretical investigation of on-line diagnosis. Within this model a fault of a system S is considered to be a transformation of S into another system S prime at some time tau. The resulting faulty system is taken to be the system which looks like S up to time tau and like S prime thereafter. The on-line diagnosis of systems which are structurally decomposed and represented as a network of smaller systems is also investigated. The fault set considered is the set of unrestricted component faults; namely, the set of faults which only affect one component of the network. A characterization of networks which can be diagnosed using a combinational detector is obtained. It is further shown that any network can be made diagnosable in the above sense through the addition of one component. In addition, a lower bound is obtained on the complexity of any component, the addition of which is sufficient to make a particular network combinationally diagnosable.
Square root information estimation, starting from its beginnings in least-squares parameter estimation, is considered. Special attention is devoted to discussions of sensitivity and perturbation matrices, computed solutions and their formal statistics, consider-parameters and consider-covariances, and the effects of a priori statistics. The constant-parameter model is extended to include time-varying parameters and process noise, and the error analysis capabilities are generalized. Efficient and elegant smoothing results are obtained as easy consequences of the filter formulation. The value of the techniques is demonstrated by the navigation results that were obtained for the Mariner Venus-Mercury (Mariner 10) multiple-planetary space probe and for the Viking Mars space mission.
An electronically commutated dc motor is reported for driving the camera claw and magazine, and a stepper motor is described for driving the shutter with the two motors synchronized electrically. Subsequent tests on the breadboard positively proved the concept, but further development beyond this study should be done. The breadboard testing also established that the electronically commutated motor can control speed over a wide dynamic range, and has a high torque capability for accelerating loads. This performance suggested the possibility of eliminating the clutch from the system while retaining all of the other mechanical features of the DAC, if the requirement for independent shutter speeds and frame rates can be removed. Therefore, as a final step in the study, the breadboard shutter and shutter drive were returned to the original DAC configuration, while retaining the brushless dc motor drive.
Breadboard models of single and dual motor drives for the shutter, claw and magazine of a space camera system were designed and tested. The single motor technique utilizes a single electronically commutated motor to drive the claw and shutter without resorting to a solenoid actuated clutch for pulse operation. Shutter speed is established by a combination of the cinemode speed and the opening of the conventional DAC two piece shutter. Pulse mode operation is obtained by applying power at a fixed clock rate and removing power at an appropriate point in the mechanical cycle such that the motor comes to rest by system friction. The dual motor approach utilizes a stepper motor to drive the shutter and an electronically commutated dc motor to drive the claw and magazine functions. The motors are synchronized electronically.
This paper offers an analytical model for predicting the effects of lognormal fading on medium-rate phase-shift-keyed telemetry. Because the model incorporates the effects of the noisy derived carrier reference in the receiver, it permits the determination of the optimum modulation index which minimizes the error rate for a given link.
A procedure for manual acreage estimation from Landsat imagery is proposed which involves a stepwise sequence of area stratification, simple size estimation, acreage estimation, and acreage precision calculation. The sample design consists of a systematic point sample of the Landsat imagery for crop type presence calibrated by a double sample of several image points having crop season-coincident ground data. The sample point layout chosen for cost-efficiency in manual sampling is a doubly aligned point matrix. The significant advantage of this sampling approach is that crop information is available from throughout the agricultural reporting unit. For technique demonstration purposes three strata were selected for sampling. The proposed technique can complement more sophisticated computer-based acreage estimation methodologies, and refinements in the sampling techniques promise significant improvements for operational utility.

A method for propagating the square-root of the state error covariance matrix in lower triangular UDU form is described. This update method can be combined with the UDU transformation used by Bierman to obtain the equations of a square-root free triangular estimation algorithm. The method is compared with the state transition matrix time update algorithm on the basis of integration accuracy, computational efficiency and storage requirements.
Derivation of a satellite in-view procedure and two satellite selection procedures are obtained and comparisons to previous procedures are presented. Two suboptimal satellite selection procedures - Quadrature System (QS) and Flexible Orthogonal System (FOS) - are compared to a suboptimal and optimum procedures, taking into account the execution time and Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP) of each.
A two-way time synchronization experiment performed in the spring of 1979 and 1980 via the Italian SIRIO-1 experimental telecommunications satellite is described. The experiment was designed and implemented to precisely monitor the satellite motion and to evaluate the possibility of performing a high precision, two-way time synchronization using a single communication channel, time-shared between the participating sites. Results show that the precision of the time synchronization is between 1 and 5 ns, while the evaluation and correction of the satellite motion effect was performed with an accuracy of a few nanoseconds or better over a time interval from 1 up to 20 seconds.
