The spatial wavefunction of half-integer spins

Within a nonrelativistic framework, spin is generally included as an intrinsic angular momentum. It is proposed here that consistent results can be obtained with a spatial wavefunction of an oriented complex exponential ${e}^{\mp {\boldsymbol{i}}\hat{{\bf{a}}}\varphi }$, where the bivector ${\boldsymbol{i}}\hat{{\bf{a}}}$ is written in terms of the pseudoscalar i = e x e y e z and the axis of rotation given by the unit vector $\hat{{\bf{a}}}$, which is generally an (effective) magnetic field direction (this can also be written as ${e}^{\mp i{\boldsymbol{\sigma }}\cdot \hat{{\bf{a}}}\varphi }$ in terms of the Pauli vector σ). The wavefunction is a multivector and not a complex scalar. The signs in the exponential correspond to the two directions of rotation around the axis. The transformation properties of these wavefunctions are given by the Pauli spinors. Finally, spin can be viewed as a zero-point rotation arising from the noncommutativity of the momentum and the vector potential.

Neutron stars in $$f(\mathtt {R,L_m})$$ gravity with realistic equations of state: joint-constrains with GW170817, massive pulsars, and the PSR J0030+0451 mass-radius from NICER data

Abstract In this work, we investigate neutron stars (NS) in $$f(\mathtt {R,L_m})$$ f ( R , L m ) theory of gravity for the case $$f(\mathtt {R,L_m})= \mathtt {R}+ \mathtt {L_m}+ \sigma \mathtt {R}\mathtt {L_m}$$ f ( R , L m ) = R + L m + σ R L m , where $$\mathtt {R}$$ R is the Ricci scalar and $$\mathtt {L_m}$$ L m the Lagrangian matter density. In the term $$\sigma \mathtt {R}\mathtt {L_m}$$ σ R L m , $$\sigma $$ σ represents the coupling between the gravitational and particles fields. For the first time the hydrostatic equilibrium equations in the theory are solved considering realistic equations of state and NS masses and radii obtained are subject to joint constrains from massive pulsars, the gravitational wave event GW170817 and from the PSR J0030+0451 mass-radius from NASA’s Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer ( NICER ) data. We show that in this theory of gravity, the mass-radius results can accommodate massive pulsars, while the general theory of relativity can hardly do it. The theory also can explain the observed NS within the radius region constrained by the GW170817 and PSR J0030+0451 observations for masses around $$1.4~M_{\odot }$$ 1.4 M ⊙ .

Optimizing trigger-level track reconstruction for sensitivity to exotic signatures

Many compelling beyond the Standard Model scenarios predict signals that result in unconventional charged particle trajectories. Signatures for which unusual tracks are the most conspicuous feature of the event pose significant challenges for experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), particularly for the trigger. This article presents a study of track-based triggers for a representative set of long-lived and unconventional signatures at the upcoming High Luminosity LHC, as well as resulting recommendations for the target parameters of a hardware-based tracking system. Scenarios studied include large multiplicities of low-p T tracks produced in a soft-unclustered-energy-pattern model, displaced leptons and anomalous prompt tracks predicted in a Supersymmetry model with long-lived staus, and displaced hadrons predicted in a Higgs portal scenario with long-lived scalars.

Relations between b → cτν decay modes in scalar models

As a consequence of the Ward identity for hadronic matrix elements, we find relations between the differential decay rates of semileptonic decay modes with the underlying quark-level transition b → cτν, which are valid in scalar models. The decay-mode dependent scalar form factor is the only necessary theoretical ingredient for the relations. Otherwise, they combine measurable decay rates as a function of the invariant mass-squared of the lepton pair $q^2$ in such a way that a universal decay-mode independent function is found for decays to vector and pseudoscalar mesons, respectively. This can be applied to the decays $B → D^{\ast}τv, B_s → D^\ast_sτv, B_c → J/ψτv$ and $B → Dτv, B_s → D_sτv, B_c → η_cτv$, with implications for $R(D^{(\ast)}), R(D^{(\ast)}_s), R(J/ψ), R(η_c)$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_c → τv)$. The slope and curvature of the characteristic $q^2$-dependence is proportional to scalar new physics parameters, facilitating their straight forward extraction, complementary to global fits.

Unleashing the power of EFT in neutrino-nucleus scattering

Neutrino physics is advancing into a precision era with the construction of new experiments, particularly in the few GeV energy range. Within this energy range, neutrinos exhibit diverse interactions with nucleons and nuclei. This study delves in particular into neutrino-nucleus quasi-elastic cross sections, taking into account both standard and, for the first time, non-standard interactions, all within the framework of effective field theory (EFT). The main uncertainties in these cross sections stem from uncertainties in the nucleon-level form factors, and from the approximations necessary to solve the nuclear many-body problem. We explore how these uncertainties influence the potential of neutrino experiments to probe new physics introduced by left-handed, right-handed, scalar, pseudoscalar, and tensor interactions. For some of these interactions the cross section is enhanced, making long-baseline experiments an excellent place to search for them. Our results, including tabulated cross sections for all interaction types and all neutrino flavors, can serve as the foundation for such searches.

Operator product expansion for radial lattice quantization of 3D ϕ 4 theory

At its critical point, the three-dimensional lattice Ising model is described by a conformal field theory (CFT), the 3D Ising CFT. Instead of carrying out simulations on Euclidean lattices, we use the quantum finite elements method to implement radially quantized critical ϕ 4 theory on simplicial lattices approaching R × S 2 . Computing the four-point function of identical scalars, we demonstrate the power of radial quantization by the accurate determination of the scaling dimensions Δ ε and Δ T as well as ratios of the operator product expansion coefficients f σ σ ε and f σ σ T of the first spin-0 and spin-2 primary operators ε and T of the 3D Ising CFT. Nonperturbative bounds on scattering of massive scalar particles in d ≥ 2

We study two-to-two scattering amplitudes of a scalar particle of mass m. For simplicity, we assume the presence of Z 2 symmetry and that the particle is Z 2 odd. We consider two classes of amplitudes: the fully nonperturbative ones and effective field theory (EFT) ones with a cut-off scale M. Using the primal numerical method which allows us to impose full non-linear unitarity, we construct novel bounds on various observables in 2 ≤ d ≤ 4 space-time dimensions for both classes of amplitudes. We show that our bounds are much stronger than the ones obtained by using linearized unitarity or positivity only. We discuss applications of our bounds to constraining EFTs. Finally, we compare our bounds to the amplitude in Φ 4 theory computed perturbatively at weak coupling, and find that they saturate the bounds.

Competing magnetic phases and fluctuation-driven scalar spin chirality in the kagome metal YMn 6 Sn 6

Identification, understanding, and manipulation of novel magnetic textures are essential for the discovery of new quantum materials for future spin-based electronic devices. In particular, materials that manifest a large response to external stimuli such as a magnetic field are subject to intense investigation. Here, we study the kagome-net magnet YMn 6 Sn 6 by magnetometry, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements combined with first-principles calculations. We identify a number of nontrivial magnetic phases, explain their microscopic nature, and demonstrate that one of them hosts a large topological Hall effect (THE). We propose a previously unidentified fluctuation-driven mechanism, which leads to the THE at elevated temperatures. This interesting physics comes from parametrically frustrated interplanar exchange interactions that trigger strong magnetic fluctuations. Our results pave a path to chiral spin textures, promising for novel spintronics.

The Transition Density Formalism in the First Compton Computation on $^4$He

The method and results of the first theory description of 4He Compton scattering at nuclear energies is presented, with a focus on figures. It uses the same Compton kernels familiar from proton, deuteron and 3He Compton scattering in Chiral Effective Field Theory with explicit Delta degrees of freedom, applicable between about 50 and 130MeV. The result compares well to data from HIγS, MAXlab and Illinois. The sensitivity of the cross section on the (static) scalar-isoscalar polarisabilities of the nucleon is explored. The project is part of the synergetic international effort of experimentalists and theorists in Compton scattering on one- and few-nucleon systems.

Massive white dwarfs in $f(\mathtt {R,L_m})$ gravity

In this work, we investigate the equilibrium configurations of massive white dwarfs (MWD) in the context of modified gravity, namely f(R,L m ) gravity, where R stands for the Ricci scalar and L m is the Lagrangian matter density. We focused on the specific case f(R,L m ) = R/2 + L m + σRL m , i.e., we have considered a non-minimal coupling between the gravity field and the matter field, with σ being the coupling constant. For the first time, the theory is applied to white dwarfs, in particular to study massive white dwarfs, which is a topic of great interest in the last years. The equilibrium configurations predict maximum masses which are above the Chandrasekhar mass limit. The most important effect of the theory is to increase significantly the mass for stars with radius < 2000 km. We found that the theory can accommodate the super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs for different star compositions. Apart from this, the theory recovers the General Relativity results for stars with radii larger than 3000 km, independent of the value of σ.

Experimental Searches for Muon to Electron Conversion in a Nucleus: COMET, DeeMe, and Mu2e (A Contributed paper for Snowmass 21)

Searches for charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) offer deep probes for a range of new physics scenarios, such as super-symmetric models, theories involving scalar leptoquarks or additional Higgs doublets, and models explaining the neutrino mass hierarchy and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. The coherent, neutrinoless conversion of a muon to an electron in the field of a nucleus, $\mu^{-}+N\rightarrow e^{-} +N$, is one example of a muonic CLFV process which has sensitivity to this new physics. This paper details three experiments: COMET, DeeMe and Mu2e which will search for $\mu^{-}+N\rightarrow e^{-} +N$ in the coming decade. These experiments offer sensitivity up to an effective new physics mass scale of $\mathcal{O}(10^{4}$ TeV/c$^{2}$), going far beyond what can be achieved in direct, collider-based, searches. The theoretical motivation, designs and anticipated timelines for these three experiments are presented. These experiments are a crucial part of a global search for CLFV. Continued support for all planned experimental searches for muonic CLFV is strongly encouraged.

Multicentered black hole saddles for supersymmetric indices

The supersymmetric index in string theory can sometimes have a discontinuous integer-valued jump at co-dimension one surfaces in moduli space called walls of marginal stability. When the index counts black hole microstates, crossing such walls of marginal stability amounts to the appearance or disappearance of a large number of such states. While wall-crossing has been understood in string theory and through the disappearance of extremal Lorentzian supergravity solutions as the moduli are varied, there has been no understanding about how the discontinuous changes in the index occur at the level of the gravitational path integral. In this paper, we find the finite-temperature saddles in $4d$ flatspace supergravity in which fermionic fields are periodic when going around the thermal circle that correspond to the multi-center black hole contributions to the index. By analyzing these saddles, we can explain how wall-crossing occurs: as the scalar moduli in supergravity are varied at the asymptotic boundary, for a given split of the charges, the saddle point equations can no longer be solved and, consequently, the corresponding multi-center saddle no longer contributes to the index. While the values of the scalars and the jump in the index when a wall is crossed all agree with the prediction from previously found Lorentzian supergravity solutions, the saddles in the index exhibit a much richer moduli space, which we analyze in detail.

On effective field theories with celestial duals

We show that associativity of the tree-level OPE in a celestial CFT imposes constraints on the coupling constants of the corresponding bulk theory. These constraints are the same as those derived in [9] from the Jacobi identity of the algebra of soft modes. The constrained theories are interesting as apparently well-defined celestial CFTs with a deformed w 1+∞ symmetry algebra. We explicitly work out the ramifications of these constraints on scattering amplitudes involving gluons, gravitons and scalars in these theories. We find that all four-point amplitudes constructible solely from holomorphic or anti-holomorphic three-point amplitudes vanish on the support of these constraints, which implies that all purely holomorphic or purely anti-holomorphic higher-point amplitudes vanish.

Multiplicative noise and the diffusion of conserved densities

Stochastic fluid dynamics governs the long time tails of hydrodynamic correlation functions, and the critical slowing down of relaxation phenomena in the vicinity of a critical point in the phase diagram. In this work we study the role of multiplicative noise in stochastic fluid dynamics. Multiplicative noise arises from the dependence of transport coefficients, such as the diffusion constants for charge and momentum, on fluctuating hydrodynamic variables. We study long time tails and relaxation in the diffusion of a conserved density (model B), and a conserved density coupled to the transverse momentum density (model H). Careful attention is paid to fluctuation-dissipation relations. We observe that multiplicative noise contributes at the same order as non-linear interactions in model B, but is a higher order correction to the relaxation of a scalar density and the tail of the stress tensor correlation function in model H.
