Linear magnetic bearing

A linear magnetic bearing system having electromagnetic vernier flux paths in shunt relation with permanent magnets, so that the vernier flux does not traverse the permanent magnet, is described. Novelty is believed to reside in providing a linear magnetic bearing having electromagnetic flux paths that bypass high reluctance permanent magnets. Particular novelty is believed to reside in providing a linear magnetic bearing with a pair of axially spaced elements having electromagnets for establishing vernier x and y axis control. The magnetic bearing system has possible use in connection with a long life reciprocating cryogenic refrigerator that may be used on the space shuttle.

An atmospheric exposure chamber for small animals

The purpose of this project was to design a long-term environmental exposure chamber for small animals. This chamber is capable of producing hypoxic, normoxic and hyperoxic atmospheres which are closely regulated. The chamber, which is of the recycling type, is fashioned after clear plastic germ-free isolators. Oxygen concentration is set and controlled by a paramagnetic O2 analyzer and a 3-way solenoid valve. In this way either O2 or N2 may be provided to the system by way of negative O2 feedback. Relative humidity is maintained at 40-50 percent by a refrigeration type dryer. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by indicating soda lime. A diaphragm pump continuously circulates chamber gas at a high enough flow rate to prevent buildup of CO2 and humidity. This chamber has been used for numerous studies which involve prolonged exposure of small animals to various O2 concentrations.

Linewidth measurements of tunable diode lasers using heterodyne and etalon techniques

Measurements of the linewidths of Pb-salt diode lasers operating in the 8- and 9-micron region are reported. The linewidths of the 9-micron lasers were determined by conventional heterodyne techniques, while for the 8-micron lasers a new technique based on a Fabry-Perot etalon was used. The new technique avoids the complexity and limited wavelength range of the heterodyne measurements and can be used for any tunable laser. The linewidths observed varied from 0.6 to more than 500-MHz FWHM. The linewidth was found to vary dramatically from device to device, to depend strongly on junction temperature and injection current, and to be correlated with vibrations caused by operation of a closed-cycle refrigerator.

Life science research in space - The Spacelab era

The events leading up to Spacelab mission 4, which is to be dedicated exclusively to life sciences experimentation in 1984-85, are described. Out of 400 experiment proposals initially received and assessed, 87 candidates were chosen for definition studies to identify the resources which would be required. These proposals addressed such problems encountered in previous space flights as space motion sickness, cardiovascular deconditioning and muscle wasting, calcium loss, and red cell mass reduction. Additional experiments were selected from bioengineering, plant physiology, and cell biology. Human subjects will consist of a Mission Specialist Astronaut and up to four Payload Specialists. Equipment to be used in experimentation includes biotelemetry systems, microscopes, cameras, centrifuges and refrigerators, all of which have been designed for use in weightless conditions. The 87 candidate experiments will be further reduced to about 20.

Sub-Kelvin temperatures in space

It is pointed out that the use of temperatures below 1 K in space would provide a significant improvement in several areas of research. The sensitivity of bolometers, for instance, can be improvead by as much as a factor of 50, if the operating temperature is lowered from 1.5 K to 0.3 K. A decrease in temperature to 0.1 K can provide even an improvement up to three orders of magnitude. Detectors based on the utilization of such improvements could be employed for far-infrared (100-1000 microns) photometry and spectroscopy in the low-background conditions of space. The study of critical phenomena in He-3/He-4 mixtures is also of interest, taking into account investigations at the tricritical point (0.87 K), which represents the junction of a first-order and a second-order transition. Tests in space are needed because gravity-related effects make adequate tests on earth impossible. He-3 refrigeration can be used to attain temperatures below 1 K. Adiabatic demagnetization can produuce temperatures below 0.3 K.

History, status and future applications of spaceborne cryogenic systems

Cryogenic cooling is employed for an increasing number of space instruments. Cryogenic cooling is needed to provide the required detector response, reduce preamplifier noise, and/or reduce background radiation. Cryogenic cooling is required by instruments employed for applications missions, gamma-ray and X-ray astronomy, cosmic ray measurements, space surveillance, IR astronomy, relativity measurements, superconductivity devices, and basic research experiments. The cooling is provided with the aid of radiant coolers, stored solid cryogen coolers, stored liquid-helium coolers, mechanical coolers, He-3 coolers, adiabatic demagnetization, refrigeration, and higher temperature adsorption and magnetic systems. Radiant coolers will continue to find widespread application for low cooling-load/high-temperature situation. It is pointed out that a long-lifetime closed-cycle, mechanical cooler is one of the most critical space technological needs.

A miniature tilting pad gas lubricated bearing

This paper describes the design and development of a miniature tilting pad gas bearing developed for use in very small turbomachines. The bearings have been developed for cryogenic turboexpanders with shaft diameters down to about 0.3 cm and rotational speeds up to one million rpm. Cryogenic expansion turbines incorporating this type of bearing should be suitable for refrigeration rates down to about 10 w.

Testing and characterizations of infrared sensor over the temperature range of 2 Kelvin to 300 Kelvin

Various cryogenic techniques were used to evaluate state of the art electro-optic devices. As research, development, and production demands require more sensitive testing techniques, faster test results, and higher production throughput, the emphasis on supporting cryogenic systems increases. The three traditional methods currently utilized in electro-optic device testing are discussed: (1) liquid contaiment dewars; (2) liquid transfer systems; and (3) closed cycle refrigeration systems. Advantages, disadvantages, and the current state of the art of each of these cryogenic techniques is discussed.

A Study of DSN Traveling Wave Maser System Reliability

Reliability and availability characteristics of the DSN traveling wave maser (TWM) Assemblies are reported for the years 1981 through 1983, the charcteristics determined are: mean time between failures (MTBF) - 1200 hours; mean time to restore service (MTTRS) - 2.5 hours; and availability - 99.83%. The TWM MTBF is very good as compared to other DSN subsystems and assemblies. The TWM MTTRS is currently about three times as long as the average of other DSN subsystems. The dominant cause of TWM failures is contamination of the helium gas in the closed cycle refrigerators. Station configurations that do not provide TWM redundancy are subject to reception outages for long periods of time. Recommendations are made to improve the TWM Assembly availability characteristics for future mission support operations.

Economic viability of photovoltaic power for development assistance applications

This paper briefly discusses the development assistance market and examines a number of specific photovoltaic (PV) development assistance field tests, including water pumping/grain grinding (Tangaye, Upper Volta), vaccine refrigerators slated for deployment in 24 countries, rural medical centers to be installed in Ecuador, Guyana, Kenya and Zimbabwe, and remote earth stations to be deployed in the near future. A comparison of levelized energy cost for diesel generators and PV systems covering a range of annual energy consumptions is also included. The analysis does not consider potential societal, environmental or political benefits associated with PV power. PV systems are shown to be competitive with diesel generators, based on life cycle cost considerations, assuming a system price of $20/W(peak), for applications having an annual energy demand of up to 6000 kilowatt-hours per year.

Two-phase turbine staging

Two-phase turbines would be useful in Rankine cycles using low-quality or saturated-liquid working fluids. The chief problem is low efficiency due to slip losses in nozzles and due to liquid impact and friction losses in rotors. To raise efficiency, a staging method was tested in which the first stage operated at high speed with low relative liquid velocity, and the second stage recovered the first-stage exit energy. The theoretical efficiency for an experimental turbine operating with Refrigerant-22 was raised from 55 percent to 66 percent, and the measured efficiency was raised from 52 percent to 57 percent.

Airborne tunable diode laser system for trace gas measurements

Sachse et al. (1976) have reported the development of an airborne tunable diode laser (TDL) system, named the Differential Absorption CO Monitor (DACOM). The absorption path was 10 m long and located in the free airstream along the fuselage of a C-54 aircraft. The present investigation is concerned with a modification of the DACOM instrument. Differences between the new instrument and the original one are related to a replacement of the external absorption path with a White cell. The instrument has the capability to suppress TDL excess noise. The laser refrigerator has been redesigned to permit an alternative method of cooling the TDL when electric power is not available.

Ion Implantatiion Improves Bearing-Surface Properties

Selected ions fired into rolling elements to increase resistance to rolling-contact fatique. Mask strips confine implantation to 105 degree arcs on cylindrical surfaces. Specimens kept cool by copper block through which refrigerant is circulated. Implanting nitrogen or titanium ions in metals improves resistance to fatigue, corrosion, and wear without altering bulk properties. Unlike such surface treatments as conventional nitriding, conventional carburizing, and coating, ion implantation is low-temperature process, requires no finishing operations, and produces highly-alloyed surface layer. Implantation process also helps conserve such strategic materials as chromium and cobalt by using them only where needed.

Hand-Held Electronic Gap-Measuring Tools

Repetitive measurements simplified by tool based on LVDT operation. With fingers in open position, Gap-measuring tool rests on digital readout instrument. With fingers inserted in gap, separation alters inductance of linear variable-differential transformer in plastic handle. Originally developed for measuring gaps between surface tiles of Space Shuttle orbiter, tool reduces measurement time from 20 minutes per tile to 2 minutes. Also reduces possibility of damage to tiles during measurement. Tool has potential applications in mass production; helps ensure proper gap dimensions in assembly of refrigerator and car doors and also used to measure dimensions of components and to verify positional accuracy of components during progressive assembly operations.

Insulating Cryogenic Pipes With Frost

Crystallized water vapor fills voids in pipe insulation. Small, carefully controlled amount of water vapor introduced into dry nitrogen gas before it enters aft fuselage. Vapor freezes on pipes, filling cracks in insulation. Ice prevents gaseous nitrogen from condensing on pipes and dripping on structure, in addition to helping to insulate all parts. Industrial applications include large refrigeration plants or facilities that use cryogenic liquids.
