Advanced detectors and signal processing for bubble memories

The feasibility of combining silicon and magnetic bubble technologies is demonstrated. Results of bubble film annealing indicate that a low temperature silicon on garnet technology is the most likely one to succeed commercially. Annealing ambients are also shown to have a major effect on the magnetic properties of bubble films. Functional MOSFETs were fabricated on bubble films coated with thick (approximately 1 micron) SiO2 layers. The two main problems with these silicon on garnet MOSFETs are low electron mobilities and large gate leakage currents. Results indicate that the laser recrystallized silicon and gate oxide (SiO2) layers are contaminated. The data suggest that part of the contaminating ions originate in the sputtered oxide spacer layer and part originates in the bubble film itself. A diffusion barrier, such as silicon nitride, placed between the bubble film and the silicon layer should eliminate the contamination induced problem.

Amorphous metallic films in silicon metallization systems

The general objective was to determine the potential of amorphous metallic thin films as a means of improving the stability of metallic contacts to a silicon substrate. The specific objective pursued was to determine the role of nitrogen in the formation and the resulting properties of amorphous thin-film diffusion barriers. Amorphous metallic films are attractive as diffusion barriers because of the low atomic diffusivity in these materials. Previous investigations revealed that in meeting this condition alone, good diffusion barriers are not necessarily obtained, because amorphous films can react with an adjacent medium (e.g., Si, Al) before they recrystallize. In the case of a silicon single-crystalline substrate, correlation exists between the temperature at which an amorphous metallic binary thin film reacts and the temperatures at which the films made of the same two metallic elements react individually. Amorphous binary films made of Zr and W were investigated. Both react with Si individually only at elevated temperatures. It was confirmed that such films react with Si only above 700 C when annealed in vacuum for 30 min. Amorphous W-N films were also investigated. They are more stable as barriers between Al and Si than polycrystalline W. Nitrogen effectively prevents the W-Al reaction that sets in at 500 C with polycrystalline W.

On the chondrite-achondrite transition - Mineralogy and chemistry of Yamato 74160 (LL7)

Petrology, mineralogic properties and contents of major elements and trace elements Ag, Au, Bi, Cd, Co, Cs, Ga, In, Rb, Se, Te, Tl, U and Zn are reported (determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis) in Yamato 74160, interpreted as an LL7 chondrite. All properties are consistent with this meteorite having been recrystallized and partially melted locally once at temperatures well above 1090 C under conditions such that some minerals (e.g. plagioclase, euhedral pyroxene, tetrataenite) grew from melt pockets and siderophilic and chalcophilic elements were lost by extraction into eutectic melt that drained away. Inhomogeneous plagioclase compositions and mobile element loss suggest shock as the most likely heat source. Yamato 74160, while inferentially chondritic, is a larval achondrite: even higher temperatures and longer times would have been required to cause the separations necessary to transform it to an identifiable achondrite type.

Dynamic crystallization experiments as constraints on chondrule genesis

The effectiveness of dynamic recrystallization experiments to reconstruct chondrule textures is evaluated. Consideration is given to the results of several experimental simulations of the silicate spheres of pyroxene-olivine chondrules, Si-rich chondrules, chondrites, droplet chondrules, and microporphyritic chondrules. It is shown that many chondrules have textures consistent with heating to 1400-1600 C, and cooling rates from a few degrees to several thousands of degrees per hour. It is shown that this physical constraint effectively rules out mechanisms for chondrule genesis which do not require instantaneous or very slow cooling. Analysis of the available textural, chemical, and isotopic data suggest that chondrules were generated from primordial particles, and several mechanisms might have assisted in chondrule heating as they settled down toward the median plane of the nebula. The most important of these mechanisms appear to be friction with the nebular gas and heating by flares.

Rapid solidification and dynamic compaction of Ni-base superalloy powders

A Ni-base superalloy containing 13Al-9Mo-2Ta (in at. percent) has been characterized in both the rapidly solidified condition and after dynamic compaction. Dynamically compacted specimens were examined in the as-compacted condition and observations related to current theories of interparticle bonding. In addition, the recrystallization behavior of the compacted material at relatively low temperature (about 0.5-0.75 Tm) was investigated.

Willy: A prize noble Ur-Fremdling - Its history and implications for the formation of Fremdlinge and CAI

The structure and composition of Willy, a 150-micron-diameter Fremdling in CAI 5241 from the Allende meteorite, are investigated using optical, secondary-electron, and electron-backscatter microscopy and electron-microprobe analysis. The results are presented in diagrams, maps, tables, graphs, and micrographs and compared with those for other Allende Fremdlinge. Willy is found to have a concentric-zone structure comprising a complex porous core of magnetite, metal, sulfide, scheelite, and other minor phases; a compact magnetite-apatite mantle; a thin (20 microns or less) reaction-assemblage zone; and a dense outer rim of fassaite with minor spinel. A multistage formation sequence involving changes in T and fO2 and preceding the introduction of Willy into the CAI (which itself preceded CAI spinel and silicate formation) is postulated, and it is inferred from the apparent lack of post-capture recrystallization that Willy has not been subjected to temperatures in excess of 600 C and may represent the precursor material for many other Fremdlinge.

Unmelted meteoritic debris in the Late Pliocene iridium anomaly - Evidence for the ocean impact of a nonchondritic asteroid

Ir-bearing particles have been recovered from two piston cores in the Antarctic Basin in the southeastern Pacific. In core E13-3, the particles closely correspond to the Late Pliocene Ir anomaly and have a fluence of about 100 mg/cm sq. In core E13-4, 120 km to the southwest, the particle fluence is about 4 mg/cm sq. Particles with diameters from 0.5 to 4 mm contain at least 35 percent of the Ir in this horizon. Three types of particles have been identified: (1) vesicular, (2) basaltic, and (3) metal. The vesicular particles appear to be shock-melted debris derived from the oceanic impact of a howarditic asteroid containing a minor metal component. These particles have recrystallized from a melt and impact into the ocean has resulted in the incorporation of Na, K, Cl, and radiogenic Sr from the ocean water target. The basaltic clasts appear to be unmelted fragments of the original asteroid which may have separated from the main body prior to impact. Combined vesicular and basaltic particles are believed to have formed by collisions in the debris cloud. Estimates of the diameter of the projectile range from 100 to 500 m. By many orders of magnitude, this is the most massive achondrite sampled by a single meteorite fall.

Varying rock responses as an indicator of changes in CO2-H2O fluid composition

The formation of the late Archean charnockite zone of southern India was ascribed to dehydration recrystallization due to an influx of CO2. Pressure temperature conditions for the metamorphism were calculated at about 750 C and 7.5 Kbar. The composition of the volatile species presently contained in fluid inclusions in the rocks changes across the transition zone. The transition zone was studied at Kabbaldurga and the paths taken by the fluids were identified.

Archean metamorphic sequence and surfaces, Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, East Greenland

The characteristics of Archean metamorphic surfaces and fabrics of a mapped sequence of rocks older than about 3000 Ma provide information basic to an understanding of the structural evolution and metamorphic history in Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, east Greenland. This information and the additional results of petrologic and geochemical studies have culminated in an extended chronology of Archean plutonic, metamorphic, and tectonic events. The basis for the chronology is considered, especially the nature of the metamorphic fabrics and surfaces in the Archean sequence. The surfaces, which are planar mineral parageneses, may prove to be mappable outside Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, and if so, will be helpful in extending the events that they represent to other Archean sequences in east Greenland. The surfaces will become especially important reference planes if the absolute ages of their metamorphic assemblages can be determined in at least one location where strain was low subsequent to their recrystallization. Once an isochron is obtained, the dynamothermal age of the regionally identifiable metamorphic surface is determined everywhere it can be mapped.

Process for preparing essentially colorless polyimide film containing phenoxy-linked diamines

A polyimide film that is approximately 90% transparent at 500 nm, useful for thermal protective coatings and solar cells, and the processes for preparing the same by thermal and chemical conversion are disclosed. An essential feature for achieving maximum optical transparency films requires utilizing recrystallized and/or sublimated specific aromatic diamines and dianhydride monomers and introducing phenoxy or thiophenyl separator groups and isomeric m,m' or o,p'-oriented diamines into the polymer molecular structure. The incorporation of these groups in the polymer structure serves to separate the chromaphoric centers and reduce the formation of inter-chain and intra-chain charge transfer complexes which normally cause absorptions in the UV-visible range. The films may be obtained by hand, brushing, casting, or spraying a layer of polyamic acid solutions onto a surface and thermally converting the applied layer to the polyimide, or the polyamic acid solution can be chemically converted to the polyimide, subsequentially dissolved in an organic solvent, and applied as a polyimide film layer with the solvent therein thermally removed.

Interdiffusional effects between tungsten fibers and an iron-nickel-base alloy

Tungsten fibers in the INCOLOY 903 alloy were annealed for over 100 hours at 1038 C and 1200 C. It was found that interdiffusion results in the formation of a reaction zone. SEM-EDS probe analysis showed that the chemistries across this zone were constant, suggesting the zone was a compound phase. The composition of the compound was estimated to be that of a mu-type phase. The local chemistry (in atomic percent) at the reaction zone/alloy matrix interface was found to be approximately 8 pct W, 1.2 pct Nb, 40 pct Fe, 14 pct Co, and 36 pct Ni. In addition, recrystallization was observed in both the remaining tungsten fiber and the nearby INCOLOY 903 matrix after annealing at 1200 C, but not at 1038 C. The results of this study suggest that reaction zone growth kinetics can be minimized by the reduction of Co and Fe and the increase of W in the matrix alloy.

The Maryville meteorite - A 1983 fall of an L6 chondrite

The Maryville chondrite fell on January 28, 1983 in eastern Tennessee. Compositions of olivine (Fa 24.5), orthopyroxene (Fs 20.8), plagioclase (An 10.6), along with the bulk composition and siderophile concentrations, indicate L-group classification. The presence of highly equilibrated minerals, strongly recrystallized matrix, and the development of large, clear plagioclase grains suggest petrologic type 6 classification. Subsequent to metamorphism the meteorite was subjected to high transient pressures that converted some feldspar to glass, deformed the silicates, and caused small amounts of melting to occur. The effects of this shock event correspond to shock facies 'd' or 'e'.

Petrology and precursors of lithic clasts from feldspathic fragmental breccia 67975

Textures and mineral chemistry (by INAA) of five lithic clasts, including both light green and light gray clasts, from feldspathic fragmental breccia 67975 were studied. The presence of five rock types was confirmed: feldspathic microporphyritic melt breccia, metamorphosed mafic-rich melt breccia with zoned and mantled clasts, 'typical' reequilibrated lunar feldspathic granulites with granoblastic texture and homogeneous mineral chemistry, hornfels, and a recrystallized mafic-rich granulite with relict igneous texture and the composition of a ferroan anorthositic norite. The mineralogy and textural data corroborate the grouping of the light green clasts proposed by Lindstrom (1984). However, the light gray clasts do not appear to be coherent in petrologic (or chemical) characteristics; one is a plagioclase-rich, possibly monomict rock with ferroan anorthositic precursor(s), and the other represents a mixture of feldspathic granulite and ferroan anorthositic norite lithologies.

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotope geochemistry and chronology of cherts from the Onverwacht Group (3.5 AE), South Africa

An Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic analysis of Archean chert samples from the Onverwacht Group, South Africa is presented, showing the same characteristic Rb and Sr concentrations as Phanerozoic cherts, with a very large range of Rb-87/Sr-86 ratios. A good correlation line in the Rb-87 to Sr-87 evolution diagram, corresponding to an age of about 2119 My and an initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio of about 0.72246, is derived which may be interpreted as reflecting the age of rehomogenization of the Sr in the protolith and the recrystallization of these cherts due to circulating hydrothermal fluids during regional metamorphism about 1.4 AE after deposition of the Onverwacht Group. The Sm-Nd systematics reflect an ancient source age of about 3.5 AE.

Quantitative analysis of PMR-15 polyimide resin by HPLC

The concentration of individual components and of total solids of 50 wt pct PMR-15 resin solutions was determined using reverse-phase HPLC to within + or - 8 percent accuracy. Acid impurities, the major source of impurities in 3,3', 4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid (BTDE), were eliminated by recrystallizing the BTDE prior to esterification. Triester formation was not a problem because of the high rate of esterification of the anhydride relative to that of the carboxylic acid. Aging of PMR-15 resin solutions resulted in gradual formation of the mononadimide and bisnadimide of 4,4'-methylenedianiline, with the BTDE concentration remaining constant. Similar chemical reactions occurred at a reduced rate in dried films of PMR-15 resin.

A DSC study on crystalline LaRC TPI powder - A new version with higher initial molecular weight

A new version of crystalline Langley Research Center Thermoplastic Polyimide (LaRC-TPI) imidized powder, which possesses a higher initial molecular weight (MW), has been prepared and characterized. The scheme used for cyclodehydration during the synthesis of this material is described. Evidence of a higher initial MW for the subject LaRC-TPI is supported by both measurements of the inherent viscosity and the DSC thermograms. An initial melting peak at 295 C is noted in the freshly-synthesized sample. The powder can be recrystallized at any elevated temperatures below 340 C, and a single crystalline endothemic peak is always observed after various thermal histories. The heat of fusion for the fresh sample, as represented by the area under the melting peak in the directional scanning calorimeter thermogram, is about 3.9 cal/gm. Comparisons of thermal properties for the subject material are made to those exhibited by the commercial LaRC-TPI powder.

Monitoring processing properties of high performance thermoplastics using frequency dependent electromagnetic sensing

An in situ NDE dielectric impedance measurement method has been developed for ascertaining the cure processing properties of high temperature advanced thermoplastic and thermosetting resins, using continuous frequency-dependent measurements and analyses of complex permittivity over 9 orders of magnitude and 6 decades of frequency at temperatures up to 400 C. Both ionic and Debye-like dipolar relaxation processes are monitored. Attention is given to LARC-TPI, PEEK, and poly(arylene ether) resins' viscosity, glass transition temperature, recrystallization, and residual solvent content and evolution properties.

Dynamic dielectric analysis for nondestructive cure monitoring and process control

Dynamic dielectric analysis (DDA) is an effective in situ NDE method that can monitor the reaction status in thermosets and the phase changes in thermoplastics, including slow reactions occuring late in the cure cycle and recrystallization during annealing. The effects of moisture and resin history on reaction rate can also be determined, as can ionic and dipolar contributions. The ionic mobility parameter is noted to be an excellent monitor of viscosity above the glass transition temperature. The ability of DDA to monitor cure rate variations in a thick section during autoclaving has been demonstrated.
