Tussock tundra surface temperatures, ambient air and incoming photosynthetically active radiation measured at the NGEE Arctic Council site, 2021 - 2023

This dataset contains temperature measurements carried out along two fiber optics cables/lines (150 m each) laid out along the ground at the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment (NGEE) Arctic site near Council, Alaska. The lines traverse an heterogeneous part of the tussock tundra site including thermokarst features and lichen dominated sections of the tundra. Measurements were done using a Sensornet Oryx DTS, a Distributed Temperature sensor that was installed in September 2021 and taken down in August 2023. The sensor was powered by solar power with data being collected every 30 minutes at 1 m resolution. In addition to these measurements air temperature and incoming photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) are provided. These measurements are co-located with the NGEE Arctic Council eddy flux and meteorological station (AmeriFlux ID US-NGC). Included are six *.csv files (four data files and two reporting format files) and two *.kml files. The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska. Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

In Situ Soil Moisture and Thaw Depth Measurements Coincident with Airborne SAR Data Collections, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, 2022

The in-situ soil moisture and thaw depth measurements provided in this dataset were collected coincident with airborne overflights of L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instruments at the Teller, Kougarok, and Council study sites on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Overflights occurred on August 19, 2022. Soil moisture data at Teller and Kougarok was collected on August 19, and at Council on August 20. Thaw depth, soil pits, and any additional measurements were recorded on August 20 and 21. Field measurements and flights were conducted during the summer of 2022 as a collaboration between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) Project’s Airborne SAR Campaign and the Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE) Arctic Project. This dataset includes a data file (*.csv), a data dictionary (*_dd.csv) and a file-level metadata (*_flmd.csv). The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-xTL NEON Toolik (TOOL)

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xTL NEON Toolik (TOOL). This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xTL NEON Toolik (TOOL) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The Toolik field site is located in a remote wilderness area at the Toolik Field Station which is on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The area is underlain by continuous permafrost, which exerts a major influence on hydrology and the distribution, structure, and function of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Because of its location between the Brooks Range and the coastal plain, the vegetation and soils at TOOL are representative of much of the Alaskan foothills tundra. This terrestrial field site is collocated with NEON’s Toolik Lake aquatic site. The closest city, Fairbanks, Alaska is 400 miles away. The Dalton Highway (also known as the Haul Road or Pipeline Road), which traverses the middle of the state from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, provides access to the area.
