Lepton flavor asymmetries: from the early Universe to BBN

Large primordial lepton flavor asymmetries with almost vanishing total baryon-minus-lepton number can evade the usual BBN and CMB constraints if neutrino oscillations lead to perfect flavor equilibration. Solving the momentum averaged quantum kinetic equations (QKEs) describing neutrino oscillations and interactions, we perform the first systematic investigation of this scenario, uncovering a rich flavor structure in stark contradiction to the assumption of simple flavor equilibration. We find (i) a particular direction in flavor space, ∆ne ≃ – 2/3 (– 1)∆n μ for normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy, in which the flavor equilibration is efficient and primordial asymmetries are essentially unconstrained, (ii) a minimal washout factor, ∆$n_{e}^{2}$| BBN ≤ 0.03 (0.016) ∑ α ∆$n_{α}^{2}$| ini yielding a conservative estimate for the allowed primordial asymmetries in a generic flavor direction, and (iii) particularly strong or weak washout if one of the initial flavor asymmetries vanishes due to non-adiabatic muon- or electron-driven MSW transitions. These results open up the possibility of a first-order QCD phase transition facilitated by large lepton asymmetries as well as baryogenesis from large and compensated ∆n e = ∆n μ asymmetries. Our systematic approach of deriving momentum averaged QKEs includes collision terms beyond the damping approximation, energy transfer between the neutrino and electron-photon plasma, and provides a fast and reliable way to investigate the impact of primordial lepton asymmetries at the time of BBN. We publicly release the Mathematica code COFLASY-M on https://github.com/mariofnavarro/COFLASY which solves the QKEs numerically.

Collider probes of real triplet scalar dark matter

We study discovery prospects for a real triplet extension of the Standard Model scalar sector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and a possible future 100 TeV $\mathcal{pp}$ collider. We focus on the scenario in which the neutral triplet scalar is stable and contributes to the dark matter relic density. When produced in $\mathcal{pp}$ collisions, the charged triplet scalar decays to the neutral component plus a soft pion or soft lepton pair, yielding a disappearing charged track in the detector. We recast current 13 TeV LHC searches for disappearing tracks, and find that the LHC presently excludes a real triplet scalar lighter than 248 (275) GeV, for a mass splitting of 172 (160) MeV with $\mathcal{L}$ = 36 fb –1 . The reach can extend to 497 (520) GeV with the collection of 3000 fb –1 . We extrapolate the 13 TeV analysis to a prospective 100 TeV pp collider, and find that a ~ 3 TeV triplet scalar could be discoverable with $\mathcal{L}$ = 30 ab –1 , depending on the degree to which pile up effects are under control. We also investigate the dark matter candidate in our model and corresponding present and prospective constraints from dark matter direct detection. We find that currently XENON1T can exclude a real triplet dark matter lighter than ~ 3 TeV for a Higgs portal coupling of order one or larger, and the future XENON20T will cover almost the entire dark matter viable parameter space except for vanishingly small portal coupling.

Flavor fragmentation function factorization

A definition of partonic jet flavor that is both theoretically well-defined and experimentally robust would have profound implications for measurements and predictions especially for heavy flavor applications. Recently, a definition of jet flavor was introduced as the net flavor flowing along the direction of the Winner-Take-All axis of a jet which is soft safe to all orders, but not collinear safe. Here, we exploit the lack of collinear safety and propose a factorization theorem of perturbative flavor fragmentation functions that resum collinear divergences and describe the evolution of flavor from the short distance of jet production to the long distance at which hadronization occurs. Collinear flavor evolution is governed by a small modification of the DGLAP equations. We present a detailed all-orders analysis and identify exact relations that must hold amongst the various anomalous dimensions by probability conservation and the existence of fixed points of the renormalization group flow. We explicitly validate the factorization theorem at one-loop order, and demonstrate its consistency at two loops in particular flavor channels. Starting at two-loops, constraints on phase space imposed by flavor measurements potentially allow for non-trivial soft contributions, but we demonstrate that they are scaleless and so explicitly vanish, ensuring that soft particles are summed inclusively and all divergences are exclusively collinear in nature. This factorization theorem opens the door to precision calculations with identified flavor in the infrared.

Effects of finite material size on axion-magnon conversion

Magnetic materials are particularly favorable targets for detecting axions interacting with electrons because the collective excitation of electron spins, the magnon, can be excited through the axion-magnon conversion process. It is often assumed that only the zero-momentum uniformly precessing magnetostatic (Kittel) mode of the magnon is excited. This is justified if the de Broglie wavelength of the axion is much longer than the size of the target magnetic material. However, if the de Broglie wavelength is shorter, finite-momentum magnon modes can also be excited. We systematically analyze the target material size dependence of the axion-magnon conversion rate. We discuss the importance of these effects in the detection of relativistic axions as well as in the detection of axion dark matter of relatively heavy mass with large material size.

Study of ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → J/ψπ + π – K + K – decays

The decays ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → J/ψπ + π – K + K – are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 , collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The decays ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → $\mathrm{J}/{ψ \mathrm{K}}^{\ast 0}{\overline{\mathrm{K}}}^{\ast 0}$ and ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → χ c1 (3872)K + K – , where the K + K – pair does not originate from a Φ meson, are observed for the first time. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions between intermediate χ c1 (3872)Φ, $\mathrm{J}/{ψ \mathrm{K}}^{\ast 0}{\overline{\mathrm{K}}}^{\ast 0}$, ψ(2S)Φ and χ c1 (3872)K + K – states are reported. A structure, denoted as X(4740), is observed in the J/ψΦ mass spectrum and, assuming a Breit-Wigner parameterisation, its mass and width are determined to be ${\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{m}_{\mathrm{X}(4740)}=4741\pm 6\pm 6\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}{\Gamma}_{\mathrm{X}(4740)}=53\pm 15\pm 11\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV},\end{array}}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the most precise single measurement of the mass of the ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ meson is performed and gives a value of ${m}_{{\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0}=5366.98\pm 0.07\pm 0.13\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2.$

Three-loop soft function for heavy-to-light quark decays

We compute the 1-jettiness soft function for the decay of a heavy quark into a light quark jet plus colorless particles at three-loop order in soft-collinear effective theory. The 1-jettiness measurement fixes the total small light-cone momentum component of the soft radiation with respect to the jet direction. This soft function is a universal ingredient to the factorization of heavy-to-light quark decays in the limit of small 1-jettiness. Our three-loop result is required for resummation at the N 3 LL' level, e.g. near the endpoint in the photon energy spectrum of the B → X s γ decay. It is also a necessary ingredient for future calculations of fully-differential heavy-to-light quark decay rates at N 3 LO using the N -jettiness subtraction method, e.g. for semileptonic top decays. Using our result for the soft anomalous dimension we confirm predictions on the universal infrared structure of QCD scattering amplitudes with a massive external quark at three loops.

Calculating the angle between jet axes

We study the angle between i) the standard jet axis, ii) the axis of a jet which has been groomed using soft drop, with reduced sensitivity to soft radiation, iii) the jet axis obtained with the winner-take-all recombination scheme, which is insensitive to soft radiation at leading power. We calculate the distributions for these angles at next- to-leading logarithmic accuracy, including non-global logarithms. The angle between the standard and groomed jet axis directly probes soft wide-angle radiation, leading to a novel factorization formula. This angle is also very sensitive to nonperturbative physics, which is directly connected to nonperturbative contribution to the rapidity anomalous dimension for transverse momentum distributions. Comparing our predictions to Pythia we find good agreement, and we foresee applications to jet substructure in proton-proton and heavy ion collisions.

Searches for 25 rare and forbidden decays of D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ mesons

A search is performed for rare and forbidden charm decays of the form ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to {h}^{\pm }{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{\left(\prime \right)\mp } $, where h ± is a pion or kaon and ℓ (')± is an electron or muon. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb –1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016. No evidence is observed for the 25 decay modes that are investigated and 90 % confidence level limits on the branching fractions are set between 1.4 × 10 –8 and 6.4 × 10 –6 . In most cases, these results represent an improvement on existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude.

Study of coherent J/ ψ production in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{{\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5 TeV

Coherent production of J/ψ mesons is studied in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5 TeV, using a data sample collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 10 μb –1 . The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon final state and are required to have transverse momentum below 1 GeV. The cross-section within the rapidity range of 2.0 < y < 4.5 is measured to be 4.45 ± 0.24 ± 0.18 ± 0.58 mb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from the luminosity determination. The cross-section is also measured in J/ψ rapidity intervals. The results are compared to predictions from phenomenological models.

Final state rescattering effects in axio-hadronic η and η′ decays

It has been long-understood that final state rescattering effects provide (1) corrections to hadronic meson decays rates, such as η → πππ and η' → ηππ. Hence, one would expect that such effects would be just as important in axio-hadronic η and η' decays, such as η(') → ππa, where a is an axion or axion-like particle (ALP). And indeed they are, as we show in this paper by using the treatment of dispersion relations to include the effects of strong final state interactions in several axio-hadronic processes, namely, η(') → π 0 π 0 a, η(') → π+π-a, and η' → ηπ 0 a. We also compute the perturbative, leading order decay rates for multiple ALP emission, such as in η(') → π 0 aa, η' → ηaa and η(') → aaa, and briefly discuss the expected corrections from strong interactions and the processes that must be considered for an accurate rate estimation of these multi-ALP decay channels.

Linear sigma dark matter

We present a model of self-interacting dark matter based on QCD-like theories and inspired by the proximity of a 0 (980 ± 20) to the $K\bar{K}$ (990) threshold. Dark matter is comprised of dark pions which self-scatter via the σ resonance close to the ππ threshold. While the linear sigma model serves as a qualitative guide, a fully unitary description of the scattering in the strongly coupled regime is given by effective range theory. The introduction of a kinetically mixed dark photon allows the dark pion to either freeze-out or -in. We study the viable parameter space which explains the observed relic abundance while evading all current constraints. Searches for dark matter self interactions at different scales, (in)direct detection signals, and (in)visibly-decaying dark photons will test this model in the near future.

Uncovering a chirally suppressed mechanism of oνββ decay with LHC searches

Δ L = 2 lepton number violation (LNV) at the TeV scale could provide an alternative interpretation of positive signal(s) in future neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay experiments. An interesting class of models from this point of view are those that at low energies give rise to dimension-9 vector operators and a dimension-7 operator, both of whose 0 νββ -decay rates are “chirally suppressed”. We study and compare the sensitivities of 0 νββ -decay experiments and LHC searches to a simplified model in this class of TeV-scale LNV that is also SU(2) L × U(1) Y gauge invariant. The searches for 0 νββ decay, which are here diluted by a chiral suppression of the vector operators, are found to be less constraining than LHC searches whose reach is increased by the assumed kinematic accessibility of the mediator particles. For the chirally suppressed dimension-7 operator generated by TeV-scale mediators, in contrast, 0 νββ -decay searches place strong constraints on the size of the new Yukawa coupling. Signals of this model at the LHC and 0 νββ -decay experiments are entirely uncorrelated with the observed neutrinos masses, as these new sources of LNV give negligible contributions to the latter. We find the prospects for the high-luminosity LHC and ton-scale 0 νββ -decay experiments to uncover the chirally-suppressed mechanism with TeV-scale LNV to be promising. We also comment on the sensitivity of the 0 νββ -decay lifetime to certain unknown low-energy constants that in the case of dimension-9 scalar operators are expected to be large due to non-perturbative renormalization.

QCD resummation of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp and pA collisions

We study the azimuthal angular decorrelations of dijet production in both proton-proton (pp) and proton-nucleus (pA) collisions. By utilizing soft-collinear effective theory, we establish the factorization and resummation formalism at the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for the azimuthal angular decorrelations in the back-to-back limit in pp collisions. We propose an approach where the nuclear modifications to dijet production in pA collisions are accounted for in the nuclear modified transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (nTMDPDFs), which contain both collinear and transverse dynamics. This approach naturally generalizes the well-established formalism related to the nuclear modified collinear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). We demonstrate strong consistency between our methodology and the CMS measurements in both pp and pA collisions, and make predictions for dijet production in the forward rapidity region in pA collisions at LHC kinematics and for mid-rapidity kinematics at sPHENIX. Throughout this paper, we focus on the application of this formalism to a simultaneous fit to both collinear and transverse momentum dependent contributions to the transverse momentum dependent distributions.

Transverse-energy-energy correlations in deep inelastic scattering

Event shape observables have been widely used for precision QCD studies at various lepton and hadron colliders. We present the most accurate calculation of the transverse-energy-energy correlation event shape variable in deep-inelastic scattering. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory the cross section is factorized as the convolution of the hard function, beam function, jet function and soft function in the back-to-back limit. A close connection to TMD factorization is established, as the beam function when combined with part of the soft function is identical to the conventional TMD parton distribution function, and the jet function is the second moment of the TMD fragmentation function matching coefficient. We validate our framework by comparing the obtained LO and NLO leading singular distributions to the full QCD calculations in the back-to-back limit. We report the resummed transverse-energy-energy correlation distributions up to N 3 LL accuracy matched with the NLO cross section for the production of a lepton and two jets. Our work provides a new way to precisely study TMD physics at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Search for the doubly heavy $ {\Xi}_{bc}^0 $ baryon via decays to D0pK-

A search for the doubly heavy \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) baryon using its decay to the D 0 pK – final state is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb - 1 . No significant signal is found in the invariant mass range from 6.7 to 7.2 GeV/ c 2 . Upper limits are set at 95% credibility level on the ratio of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) production cross-section times its branching fraction to D 0 pK - relative to that of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^0{pK}^{-} \) decay. The limits are set as a function of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses, in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and in the transverse momentum region from 5 to 25 GeV/ c . Upper limits range from 1 . 7 × 10 - 2 to 3 . 0 × 10 - 1 for the considered \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses.

Hidden sector monopole dark matter with matter domination

The thermal freeze-out mechanism for relic dark matter heavier than O (10 – 100 TeV) requires cross-sections that violate perturbative unitarity. Yet the existence of dark matter heavier than these scales is certainly plausible from a particle physics perspective, pointing to the need for a non-thermal cosmological history for such theories. Topological dark matter is a well-motivated scenario of this kind. Here the hidden-sector dark matter can be produced in abundance through the Kibble-Zurek mechanism describing the non-equilibrium dynamics of defects produced in a second order phase transition. We revisit the original topological dark matter scenario, focusing on hidden-sector magnetic monopoles, and consider more general cosmological histories. We find that a monopole mass of order (1–10 5 ) PeV is generic for the thermal histories considered here, if monopoles are to entirely reproduce the current abundance of dark matter. In particular, in a scenario involving an early era of matter domination, the monopole number density is always less than or equal to that in a pure radiation dominated equivalent provided a certain condition on critical exponents is satisfied. This results in a larger monopole mass needed to account for a fixed relic abundance in such cosmologies.
