Growth and characterization of ferromagnetic Ga 2 O 3 :(Cr, Mn)

The goal of this Exploratory Express project was to explore the possibility of tunable ferromagnetism in Mn or Cr incorporated epitaxial Ga 2 O 3 films. Tunability of magnetic properties can enable novel applications in spintronics, quantum computing, and magnetism-based logics by allowing control of magnetism down to the nanoscale. Carriers (electrons or holes) mediated ferromagnetic ordering in semiconductor can lead to tunable ferromagnetism by leveraging the tunability of carrier density with doping level, gate electric field, or optical pumping of the carriers. The magnetic ions (Cr or Mn) in Ga 2 O 3 act as localized spin centers which can potentially be magnetically coupled through conduction electrons to enable ferromagnetic ordering. Here we investigated tunable ferromagnetism in beta Ga 2 O 3 semiconductor host with various n-doping levels by incorporating 2.4 atomic percent Mn or Cr. The R&D approach involved growth of epitaxial Ga 2 O 3 film on sapphire or Ga 2 O 3 substrate, implantation of Mn or Cr ions, annealing of the samples post implantation, and magnetic measurements. We studied magnetic behavior of Mn:Ga 2 O 3 as a function of different n-doping levels and various annealing temperatures. The vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) measurement exhibited strong ferromagnetic signals from the annealed Mn:Ga 2 O 3 sample with n-doping level of 5E19 cm -3 . This ferromagnetic behavior disappears from Mn:Ga 2 O 3 when the n-doping level is reduced to 5E16 cm -3 . Although these results are to be further verified by other measurement schemes due to the observation of background ferromagnetism from the growth substrate, these results indicate the possibility of tunable ferromagnetism in Mn:Ga 2 O 3 mediated by conduction electrons.

Analysis of Near-Field Magnetic Responses on ZrTe 5 through Cryogenic Magneto-THz Nano-Imaging

One manifestation of light-Weyl fermion interaction is the emergence of chiral magnetic effects under magnetic fields. Probing real space magnetic responses at terahertz (THz) scales is challenging but highly desired, as the local responses are less affected by the topologically trivial inhomogeneity that is ubiquitous in spatially averaged measurements. Here, we implement a cryogenic THz microscopy instrument under a magnetic field environment—a task only recently achieved. We explore the technical approach of this system and characterize the magnetic field’s influence on our AFM operation by statistical noise analysis. We find evidence for local near-field spatial variations in the topological semimetal ZrTe 5 up to a 5-Tesla magnetic field and obtain near-field THz spectra to discuss their implications for future studies on the chiral magnetic effect.

Volumetric carrier injection in InGaN quantum well light emitting diodes

InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) light emitting diodes (LEDs) are essential components of solid-state lighting and displays. However, the efficiency of long wavelength (green to red) devices is inferior to that of blue LEDs. To a large degree, this occurs because the equilibration of injected holes between multiple QWs of the active region is hindered by GaN quantum confinement and polarization barriers. This drawback could be overcome by volumetric hole injection into all QWs through semipolar QWs present on the facets of V-defects that form at threading dislocations in polar GaN-based structures. In this work, we have tested the viability of this injection mechanism and studied its properties by time-resolved and near-field spectroscopy techniques. Here, we have found that indeed the hole injection via the V-defects does take place, the mechanism is fast, and the hole spread from the V-defect is substantial, making this type of injection feasible for efficient long wavelength GaN LEDs.

Sky input horn for a far-infrared interferometer

A unique design has been developed whereby a compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) and a compound elliptical concentrator (CEC) are joined at their throats. The CPC serves as the field-defining optics, in that it accepts up to a certain maximum acceptance angle and then concentrates this accepted energy at its throat. Energy incident from angles greater than the acceptance angle is rejected. The CEC takes the energy concentrated at the CPC throat and then redirects this energy into a finite-sized pupil a given distance away. The considered design will be used as the sky input horn for a cryogenic far-infrared polarizing interferometer to be flown on NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer satellite. The interferometer will operate at 2 K and measure the 3-K cosmic background radiation of the universe in the 100-micrometer-1-cm spectral range.

Severe storm electricity

Severe storms and lightning were measured with a NASA U2 and ground based facilities, both fixed base and mobile. Aspects of this program are reported. The following results are presented: (1) ground truth measurements of lightning for comparison with those obtained by the U2. These measurements include flash type identification, electric field changes, optical waveforms, and ground strike location; (2) simultaneous extremely low frequency (ELF) waveforms for cloud to ground (CG) flashes; (3) the CG strike location system (LLP) using a combination of mobile laboratory and television video data are assessed; (4) continued development of analog-to-digital conversion techniques for processing lightning data from the U2, mobile laboratory, and NSSL sensors; (5) completion of an all azimuth TV system for CG ground truth; (6) a preliminary analysis of both IC and CG lightning in a mesocyclone; and (7) the finding of a bimodal peak in altitude lightning activity in some storms in the Great Plains and on the east coast. In the forms on the Great Plains, there was a distinct class of flash what forms the upper mode of the distribution. These flashes are smaller horizontal extent, but occur more frequently than flashes in the lower mode of the distribution.

Variable-Temperature-Gradient Device for Solidification Research

Device for research in solidification and crystal growth allows crystallization of melt observed as occurs. Temperature gradient across melt specimen increased or decreased rapidly while solidification front proceeds at constant speed across sample. Device moves sample at same speed, thereby holding position of liquid/solid interface stationary within field of optical microscope. Device, variabletemperature-gradient microscope stage, used to study crystal growth at constant rate while thermal driving force is varied.

Magnetic optical activity in intense laser fields. I - Self-rotation and Verdet constant

The paper is concerned with the Faraday rotation and circular dichroism of dilute gases in longitudinal magnetic fields subject to strong radiation fields. In particular, magnetic fields are considered which produce Zeeman shifts much smaller than inverse collision times but which may be greater or smaller then the multipole relaxation times. Doppler broadening is considered, and explicit expressions are given for dipole transitions in a two-level system with arbitrary angular momentum for strong and weak magnetic fields. The same system is then studied as a function of the external magnetic-field strength with a fixed laser frequency. It is shown that this experimental arrangement, referred to as forward scattering, has certain advantages that are not present in the more usual magnetic rotation spectroscopy.

Theoretical investigation of non-equilibrium chemistry and optical radiation in hypersonic flow fields

Future space vehicles returning from distant missions or high earth orbits may enter the upper regions of the atmosphere and use aerodynamic drag to reduce their velocity before they skip out of the atmosphere and enter low earth orbit. The Aeroassist Flight Experiment (AFE) is designed to explore the special problems encountered in such entries. A computer code was developed to calculate the radiative transport along line-or-sight in the general 3-D flow field about an arbitrary entry vehicle, if the temperatures and species concentrations along the line-of-sight are known. The radiative heating calculation at the stagnation point of the AFE vehicle along the entry trajectory was performed, including a detailed line-by-line accounting of the radiative transport in the vacuum ultraviolet (below 200 nm) by the atomic N and O lines. A method was developed for making measurements of the haze particles in the Titan atmosphere above 200 km altitude. Several other tasks of a continuing nature, to improve the technical ability to calculate the nonequilibrium gas dynamic flow field and radiative heating of entry vehicles, were completed or advanced.

The use of holographic interferometry for measurements of temperature in a rectangular heat pipe

Holographic interferometry is a nonintrusive method and as such possesses considerable advantages such as not disturbing the velocity and temperature field by creating obstacles which would alter the flow field. These optical methods have disadvantages as well. Holography, as one of the interferometry methods, retains the accuracy of older methods, and at the same time eliminates the system error of participating components. The holographic interferometry consists of comparing the objective beam with the reference beam and observing the difference in lengths of optical paths, which can be observed during the propagation of the light through a medium with locally varying refractive index. Thus, change in refractive index can be observed as a family of nonintersecting surfaces in space (wave fronts). The object of the investigation was a rectangular heat pipe. The goal was to measure temperatures in the heat pipe, which yields data for computer code or model assessment. The results were obtained by calculating the temperatures by means of finite fringes.

Localization of one-photon state in space and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox in spontaneous parametric down conversion

An experiment on one-photon state localization in space using a correlation technique in Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC) process is discussed. Results of measurements demonstrate an idea of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox for coordinate and momentum variables of photon states. Results of the experiment can be explained with the help of an advanced wave technique. The experiment is based on the idea that two-photon states of optical electromagnetic fields arising in the nonlinear process of the spontaneous parametric down conversion (spontaneous parametric light scattering) can be explained by quantum mechanical theory with the help of a single wave function.

Real time quantitative imaging for semiconductor crystal growth, control and characterization

A quantitative real time image processing system has been developed which can be software-reconfigured for semiconductor processing and characterization tasks. In thermal imager mode, 2D temperature distributions of semiconductor melt surfaces (900-1600 C) can be obtained with temperature and spatial resolutions better than 0.5 C and 0.5 mm, respectively, as demonstrated by analysis of melt surface thermal distributions. Temporal and spatial image processing techniques and multitasking computational capabilities convert such thermal imaging into a multimode sensor for crystal growth control. A second configuration of the image processing engine in conjunction with bright and dark field transmission optics is used to nonintrusively determine the microdistribution of free charge carriers and submicron sized crystalline defects in semiconductors. The IR absorption characteristics of wafers are determined with 10-micron spatial resolution and, after calibration, are converted into charge carrier density.
