Space vehicle gyroscope sensor applications

Considerations which form the basis for the specification, design and evaluation of gyroscopes for spaceborne sensor applications are presented. The applications are distinguished by basic vehicle category: launch vehicles, spacecraft, entry vehicles and sounding rockets. Specifically excluded from discussion are gyroscope effector applications. Exotic or unconventional gyroscopes for which operational experience is nonexistent are mentioned only briefly to alert the reader of future trends. General requirements for testing and evaluation are discussed.

Pioneer Venus mechanical roots pump test and evaluation

A mechanical pump for use with the Pioneer-Venus probe mass spectrometer inlet system was obtained, and a limited performance testing program, including ultimate/compression ratio tests and throughput tests at three different pump speeds, was performed. Considerable operating experience with the pump was obtained over approximately 200 hours of running. The test results show general agreement with pump specifications.

Laser communication experiment. Volume 1: Design study report: Spacecraft transceiver. Part 3: LCE design specifications

The requirements for the design, fabrication, performance, and testing of a 10.6 micron optical heterodyne receiver subsystem for use in a laser communication system are presented. The receiver subsystem, as a part of the laser communication experiment operates in the ATS 6 satellite and in a transportable ground station establishing two-way laser communications between the spacecraft and the transportable ground station. The conditions under which environmental tests are conducted are reported.

Key technology for airbreathing hypersonic aircraft.

This paper reviews recent progress in the key hypersonic technologies, which has been good despite a relatively low priority. Successful hypersonic research engine tests have been made. Active cooling system analyses have shown potential for weight savings, alleviation of structural design problems, and long airframe life. Maturing computerized flow field theories permit optimizing engine-airframe performance. Adequate progress in the future requires an expanded technology program emphasizing hydrogen usage. A hydrogen fueled hypersonic research airplane is essential, providing critical flight data and operational experience.

Results of Apollo 16.

The results of the Apollo 16 mission are summarized, and the present level of hardware and procedures maturity is illustrated. The primary objective was to obtain a sample of the lunar highlands. It appears that the moon and its history are too complex to be explained by any of the models currently available. Contingency plans fell into three categories: (1) emergency recovery from a hazardous situation, (2) alternate plans to maximize the mission return following a hardware malfunction, and (3) alternate procedures to work around specific problems. Operational experience indicates that it is better to execute a plan with some known disadvantages than to replace it with one which has some apparent advantages but is not thoroughly understood.

A unique high intensity solar simulation system

This simulator is unique in that it is capable of producing intensities up to 16.0 solar constants (25 solar constants without spectral filters) and closely simulates the solar spectrum over a 12 inch diameter area. The simulator is described and the capabilities, calibration, operational experiences, data collection, and safety considerations associated with this simulator are discussed.
