Expansion tunnel performance with and without an electromagnetically opened tertiary diaphragm

A study was conducted to examine the effect of synchronization of an electromagnetically opened tertiary diaphragm with flow arrival at the diaphragm on the pitot pressure measured at the test section of an expansion tunnel. The effect of tertiary diaphragm pressure ratio (ratio of initial nozzle pressure to quiescent acceleration section pressure) on the pitot pressure time history is also determined. The inadequacy of a pressure transducer protection arrangement used in previous expansion tube and expansion tunnel tests was revealed.

Analysis and Test of Deep Flaws in Thin Sheets of Aluminum and Titanium. Volume 2: Crack Opening Displacement and Stress-Strain Data

Static fracture tests were performed on surface flawed specimens of aluminum and titanium alloys. A simulated proof overload cycle was applied prior to all of the cyclic tests. Variables included in each test series were flaw shapes and thickness. Additionally, test temperature was a variable for the aluminum test series. The crack opening displacement and stress-strain data obtained are presented.

High-torque open-end wrench

A wrench is described that is usable where limited access normally requires an open-end wrench, but which has substantially the high-torque capacity and small radial clearance characteristics of a closed-end wrench. The wrench includes a sleeve forming a nut-engageable socket with a gap in its side, and an adaptor forming a socket with a gap in its side, the adaptor closely surrounding the sleeve and extending across the gap in the sleeve. The sleeve and adaptor have surfaces that become fully engaged when a wrench handle is applied to the adaptor to turn it so as to tighten a nut engaged by the sleeve.

Open-circuit voltage improvements in low-resistivity solar cells

Mechanisms limiting the open-circuit voltage in 0.1 ohm-cm solar cells were investigated. It was found that a rather complicated multistep diffusion process could produce cells with significantly improved voltages. The voltage capabilities of various laboratory cells were compared independent of their absorption and collection efficiencies. This was accomplished by comparing the cells on the basis of their saturation currents or, equivalently, comparing their voltage outputs at a constant current-density level. The results show that for both the Lewis diffused emitter cell and the Spire ion-implanted emitter cell the base component of the saturation current is voltage controlling. The evidence for the University of Florida cells, although not very conclusive, suggests emitter control of the voltage in this device. The data suggest further that the critical voltage-limiting parameter for the Lewis cell is the electron mobility in the cell base.

Factors affecting the open-circuit voltage and electrode kinetics of some iron/titanium/redox flow cells

The effect of acid concentration on the performance of the iron-titanium redox flow cell was studied. When the acidity was increased, open-circuit voltages decreased on the titanium side but load voltages increased due to decreased polarization. The best load voltage occurs when there is high acidity on the titanium side coupled with low acidity on the iron side, but such cells show voltage losses with repeated cycling because of the diffusion of acid through the membrane. No membrane tested has been found capable of maintaining the differences in acidity. Chelating agents show some promise in reducing polarization at the Ti electrode and thus improving energy efficiency.

Lower molecular weight hydrocarbon formation in an open flow system by Fischer Tropsch reaction

A Fischer Tropsch type mechanism has been proposed for the synthesis of organic compounds in the primitive solar system. The evidence for hydrocarbon formation, especially those of higher molecular weight, under simulated conditions of the early solar nebula has been presented (Studier et al., 1968, 1972; Gelpi et al., 1970). In this paper, we report studies on the formation of specifically the lower molecular weight hydrocarbons. By using an open flow reaction system and two closed systems, several factors which may affect the production of these compounds have been examined.

Stress-intensity factors and crack-opening displacements for round compact specimens

A two dimensional, boundary collocation stress analysis was used to analyze various round compact specimens. The influence of the round external boundary and of pin-loaded holes on stress intensity factors and crack opening displacements was determined as a function of crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios. A wide-range equation for the stress intensity factors was developed. Equations for crack-surface displacements and load-point displacements were also developed. In addition, stress intensity factors were calculated from compliance methods to demonstrate that load-displacement records must be made at the loading points and not along the crack line for crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios less than about 0.4.

Open-circuit voltage improvements in low resistivity solar cells

Improvements in the open circuit voltage of 0.1 ohm-cm silicon solar cells were achieved using a multistep diffusion technique. Experimental details are given along with the results of an analysis that indicate that anomalous behavior of the electron mobility in the cell base limits attainment of higher voltages.

Open-loop radio science with a suppressed-carrier signal

When a suppressed-carrier signal is squared, the carrier reappears in doubled form. An open-loop receiver can be used to deliver a recording of a band-limited waveform containing this carrier, whose amplitude and phase can be tracked by the radio science experimenter.

Case for an open universe

The determination of the geometrical structure of the universe through the magnitude-vs-redshift relation in standard cosmology has not been very successful, mainly because of the intrinsic insensitivity of the m-vs-z relation to a deceleration parameter, which determines the spatial curvature and therefore the geometry. By relaxing the assumption usually made, i.e., the identity of gravitational and atomic clocks, sufficient sensitivity is achieved. Existing observational evidence then leads one to conclude that the universe is open.

Total aircraft flight-control system - Balanced open- and closed-loop control with dynamic trim maps

The availability of the airborne digital computer has made possible a Total Aircraft Flight Control System (TAFCOS) that uses virtually the complete nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic data for the aircraft to construct dynamic trim maps that represent an inversion of the aircraft model. The trim maps, in series with the aircraft, provide essentially a linear feed-forward path. Basically, open-loop trajectory control is employed with only a small perturbation feedback signal required to compensate for inaccuracy in the aircraft model and for external disturbances. Simulation results for application to an automatic carrier-landing system are presented. Flight-test results for a STOL aircraft operating automatically over a major portion of its flight regime are presented. The concept promises a more rapid and straightforward design from aerodynamic principles, particularly for highly nonlinear configurations, and requires substantially less digital computer capacity than conventional automatic flight-control system designs.

Maneuver reconstruction techniques for open-loop spin-stabilized spacecraft

The Pioneer missions were supported by spin-stabilized spacecraft designs using open-loop control and blow-down propulsion subsystems. Reliable estimates of the ever-changing performance inherent to these subsystems were needed to effectively design and reconstruct trajectory correction maneuver (TCM) strategies. These performance updates were obtained by adjusting model parameters to match independent telemetric and radiometric observations to define the simultaneous changes in attitude, velocity, and spin rate during a maneuver sequence.

Materials processing in space: A survey of referred open literature publications

Over 190 reports published in the open literature by workers in the materials processing in space program are listed according to year as well as alphabetically by author. Thirty five reports submitted for publication are also cited. Supported either directly or indirectly by NASA, the research generally pertains to the influence (or lack of influence) of gravity on processes involved in crystal growth, solidification, fluid transport, containerless phenomena, and various separation techniques of interest to the biomedical community. Studies of the possibilities of using the high vacuum in the wake of orbiting vehicles for performing processes involving large heat loads and evolution of gases are also included.

Panel C report: Standards needed for the use of ISO Open Systems Interconnection - basic reference model

The use of an International Standards Organization (ISO) Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model and its relevance to interconnecting an Applications Data Service (ADS) pilot program for data sharing is discussed. A top level mapping between the conjectured ADS requirements and identified layers within the OSI Reference Model was performed. It was concluded that the OSI model represents an orderly architecture for the ADS networking planning and that the protocols being developed by the National Bureau of Standards offer the best available implementation approach.

Stress-intensity factors and crack-opening displacements for round compact specimens

An improved method of boundary collocation based on the complex variable analysis of Muskhelishvili (1953) is applied to the two-dimensional stress analysis of round compact specimens with pin-loaded holes. Stress intensity factors and crack opening displacements are calculated for various round compact specimens as a function of crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios. A wide-range equation for the stress intensity factors and equations for crack-surface displacements and load-point displacements are developed.

Radiation from an open-ended waveguide with beam equalizer - A spectral domain analysis

A septum and an impedance matching post are used as a beam equalizer in an open-ended waveguide feed for reflectors used in satellite communications systems. The performance of this design over a frequency band is evaluated using a spectral domain approach. The computed radiation patterns in the E- and H-planes, as well as the results for the impedance match are presented.
