Influence of Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (AgMAR) and Stratigraphic Heterogeneities on Nitrate Reduction in the Deep Subsurface

This data package contains input files for TOUGHREACT for a modeling study examining the effects of managed aquifer recharge on agricultural lands on nitrate cycling and transport in the Central Valley of CA near Modesto. The files contain all the geochemical species, reactions, and hydrological parameters for the model. The files are text files used for the TOUGH family of code created by LBNL. To use the files a license is required. https://tough.lbl.gov/licensing-download/toughreact-licensing-download/Accompanying Paper Abstract: Agricultural managed aquifer recharge (AgMAR) is a proposed management strategy whereby surface water flows are used to intentionally flood croplands with the purpose of recharging underlying aquifers. However, legacy nitrate (NO3-) contamination in agriculturally-intensive regions poses a threat to groundwater resources under AgMAR. To address these concerns, we use a reactive transport modeling framework to better understand the effects of AgMAR management strategies (i.e., by varying the frequency, duration between flooding events, and amount of water) on N leaching to groundwater under different stratigraphic configurations and antecedent moisture conditions. In particular, we examine the potential of denitrification and nitrogen retention in deep vadose zone sediments (~15 m) using variable AgMAR application rates on two-dimensional representations of differently textured soils, soils with discontinuous bands/channels, and soils with preferential flow paths characteristic of typical agricultural field sites. Our results indicate that finer textured sediments, such as silt loams, alone or embedded within high flow regions, are important reducing zones providing conditions needed for denitrification. Simulation results further suggest that applying water all-at-once rather than in increments for a fixed volume of recharge transports higher concentrations of NO3- deeper into the profile, which has the potential to exacerbate groundwater quality. This transport into deeper depths can be aggravated by wetter antecedent soil moisture conditions. However, applying water all-at-once also increases denitrification within the vadose zone by promoting anoxic conditions. We conclude that AgMAR management strategies can be designed to enhance denitrification in the subsurface and reduce N leaching to groundwater, while specifically accounting for lithologic heterogeneity, antecedent soil moisture conditions, and depth to the water table. Our findings are potentially relevant to other systems that experience flooding inundation such as riparian corridors, floodplains, wetlands, and other managed landscapes like dedicated recharge basins.

Templates for developing and versioning data standards and reporting formats using GitHub

This data package contains three templates that can be used for creating README files and Issue Templates, written in the markdown language, that support community-led data reporting formats. We created these templates based on the results of a systematic review (see related references) that explored how groups developing data standard documentation use the Version Control platform GitHub, to collaborate on supporting documents. Based on our review of 32 GitHub repositories, we make recommendations for the content of README Files (e.g., provide a user license, indicate how users can contribute) and so 'README_template.md' includes headings for each section. The two issue templates we include ('issue_template_for_all_other_changes.md' and 'issue_template_for_documentation_change.md') can be used in a GitHub repository to help structure user-submitted issues, or can be modified to suit the needs of data standard developers. We used these templates when establishing ESS-DIVE's community space on GitHub (https://github.com/ess-dive-community) that includes documentation for community-led data reporting formats. We also include file-level metadata 'flmd.csv' that describes the contents of each file within this data package. Lastly, the temporal range that we indicate in our metadata is the time range during which we searched for data standards documented on GitHub.

Transport and Retention of Particulate Organic Matter in Sand: Lab Experiments and Modelling

Flow-through reactor (FTR) experiments were conducted at three different downward vertical flow rates to study the transport and retention of particulate organic matter (Chlorella powder) in riverbed sediments. This data package includes data files (.csv) regarding effluent collected from the FTRs during the experiments (time, duration, volume of each sample collection; concentration of nonreactive bromide tracer; concentration of suspended Chlorella determined by absorbance measurements) and sediment (sand) slices collected from the FTRs after the experiments (mass of Chlorella retained in 1 cm depth intervals determined by loss-on-ignition method). More detailed descriptions of data are provided in the data dictionary, and detailed methods are available in the associated MSc thesis listed in ‘Related References.’ The data dictionary and file level meta data (FLMD) are included in the data package as both .csv and .xlsx files. This data package also includes timelapse videos (.mp4) of the experiments, and modelling scripts associated with the experiments. The modelling scripts are included as MATLAB ‘live scripts’ (.mlx, which can be run using MATLAB), and are also included as .pdf and .html files with output plots included (which can be viewed without a MATLAB license and installation). The data files and modelling scripts are organized into a .zip folder for each of the three FTR experiments (three flow rates).

Quantum efficiency and lifetime study for negative electron affinity GaAs nanopillar array photocathode

Recent studies showed significant improvement in quantum efficiency (QE) by negative electron affinity (NEA) GaAs nanopillar array (NPA) photocathodes over their flat surface peers, particularly at 500 ─ 800 nm waveband. However, the underlying physics is yet to be well understood for further improvement in its performance. In this report, NEA GaAs NPA photocathodes with different dimensions were studied. The diameter of the nanopillars varied from 200 ─ 360 nm, the height varied from 230 ─ 1000 nm and the periodicity varied from 470 ─ 630 nm. The QE and photocathode lifetime were measured. Mie-resonance enhancement was observed at tunable resonance wavelengths. Simulations was also performed to understand the mechanism of photo-absorption and possible ways to further improve the photocathode performance to meet the stringent requirement of the electron sources in large scale electron accelerators. **Acknowledgement** Authored by Jefferson Science Associates, LLC under U.S. DOE contract no. pvlib python: 2023 project update

pvlib python is a community-developed, open-source software toolbox for simulating the performance of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy components and systems. It provides reference implementations of over 100 empirical and physics-based models from the peer-reviewed scientific literature, including solar position algorithms, irradiance models, thermal models, and PV electrical models. In addition to individual low-level model implementations, pvlib python provides high-level workflows that chain these models together like building blocks to form complete “weather-to-power” photovoltaic system models. It also provides functions to fetch and import a wide variety of weather datasets useful for PV modeling. pvlib python has been developed since 2013 and follows modern best practices for open-source python software, with comprehensive automated testing, standards-based packaging, and semantic versioning. Its source code is developed openly on GitHub and releases are distributed via the Python Package Index (PyPI) and the conda-forge repository. pvlib python’s source code is made freely available under the permissive BSD-3 license. Here we (the project’s core developers) present an update on pvlib python, describing capability and community development since our 2018 publication (Holmgren, Hansen, & Mikofski, 2018).

QSpace - An open-source tensor library for Abelian and non-Abelian symmetries

This is the documentation for the tensor library QSpace (v4.0), a toolbox to exploit ‘quan tum symmetry spaces’ in tensor network states in the quantum many-body context. QSpace permits arbitrary combinations of symmetries including the abelian symmetries $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and U(1), as well as all non-abelian symmetries based on the semisimple classical Lie algebras: A n , B n , C n , and D n , or respectively, the special unitary group SU(n), the odd orthogonal group SO(2n+1), the symplectic group Sp(2n), and the even orthogonal group SO(2n). The code (C++ embedded via the MEX interface into Matlab) is available open source as of QSpace v4.0 on bitbucket under the Apache 2.0 license. QSpace is designed as a bottom-up approach for non-abelian symmetries. It starts from the defining representation and the respective Lie algebra. By explicitly comput ing and tabulating generalized Clebsch-Gordan coefficient tensors, QSpace is versatile in the type of operations that it can perform across all symmetries. At the level of an ap plication, much of the symmetry-related details are hidden within the QSpace C++ core libraries. Hence when developing tensor network algorithms with QSpace, these can be coded (nearly) as if there are no symmetries at all, despite being able to fully exploit general non-abelian symmetries.

Energy Performance Validation of a Gaseous Air Cleaning Technology for Commercial Buildings

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Technologies Office Commercial Building Integration group conducts evaluations of new energy efficiency technologies as part of the High Impact Technology Catalyst program. The subject of this field validation project is an air cleaning technology that removes gaseous contaminants from indoor air to reduce outdoor air ventilation requirements. Reducing the volume of outdoor air required reduces heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads and can provide significant energy savings for some buildings in certain climates. The technology, called the HLR (HVAC Load Reduction), was developed by enVerid. The technology uses a solid regenerable sorbent material that was developed by DOE's National Energy Technology Laboratory and licensed to the vendor for this application. The sorbent material was originally developed to adsorb carbon dioxide (CO2); the vendor continued to develop the sorbent and the overall system so that it can also remove volatile organic compounds (including aldehydes), carbon monoxide, ozone, and particulate matter 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller (PM2.5) from the air. This material has low regeneration temperature requirements, and its sorption properties are unaffected by humidity levels, both of which are beneficial for building applications.

Open Source Scalable Data Services and Data Fusion for Biological and Environmental Sciences (SBIR Phase I Final Scientific/ Technical Report)

The overarching goal of the project is to develop an integrated open-source scientific data management system (Apache V2 license), ResonantEco, that meets the need of biological and environmental researchers and developers for data management, curation, and data processing for analyses with a wide range of scale and complexity. ResonantEco will provide web enabled data services with features such as unified data interfaces and federated views of data and metadata for heterogeneous data sources with an interactive web client for data exploration. Our use of the term fusion is taken from geospatial (GIS) domain where data fusion is often synonymous with data integration. In particular, data integration in ResonantEco involves combining data residing in different sources and providing users with a unified view of them.

Open Source Platform for Live Processing of High Data Rate Electron Microscopy (SBIR Phase I Award Topic 15, Subtopic B, Final Scientific / Technical Report)

4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is experiencing a revolution both in terms of data size, and data veracity, as are many other areas of experimental data acquisition. This presents enormous opportunities to make new scientific discoveries, but is also hamstrung by aging software that is no longer fit for purpose. Experimental data acquisition platforms must make the same investments in software infrastructure that the simulation community made decades ago to take advantage of high-performance computing (HPC) if they hope to realize the full potential of the latest advances made in detector technology. This requires rethinking the design and deployment of hardware, moving away from small, fixed commodity computing capabilities with closed interfaces to open, modular, scalable systems designed for parallelism and throughput. The technical approach will leverage best-in-class open source technologies, and develop new approaches strategically to build an open source platform for experimental data acquisition targeting high data rate electron microscopy. The project will develop a software platform that uses the power and performance of modern HPC resources to ingest the large volume of data produced by electron microscopes using direct electron detectors. A set of configurable pipelines will be used to enable the processing to be tailored to the problem being investigated with builtin visualization of data at interactive rates. This project will leverage investments made by the DOE and other agencies to provide a powerful software platform for the experimental data community working with most powerful electron microscopes, such as 4D STEM detectors. It will create a platform that serves as a reference for the community. Permissive open source licensing will make the platform available to all, with a simple deployment strategy offering the ability to keep data close to where it is generated. This advanced software platform will require customization for each deployment, creating opportunities for software services that are typically offered to extend open source software platforms.

Assessment of the Material Performance for TCR Applications (Progress Report)

The objective of Argonne’s materials research activities for the Transformational Challenge Reactor (TCR) program is to improve the understanding of material properties from additive manufacturing with the focus on understanding the creep and fatigue properties of additively manufactured materials. The material work conducted by Argonne provides support in developing and qualifying advanced materials and manufacturing processes to allow for innovative reactor design and licensing for the TCR. In FY 2020, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) provided six ASTM standard sized creep specimens of additively-manufactured 316L stainless steel (AM 316L SS) for evaluation of the effect of post-build heat treatment on the creep property. Two different teat treatments were conducted on the as-built specimens, namely 1050°C/1h and 650°C/1h before creep testing. All specimens were creep tested at 550°C and 275 MPa to understand the effect of heat treatments. We have also received AM 316L SS printed in various forms including rods and sheets, wrought 316 L SS (as a reference material), and AM IN718 for tensile, creep and fatigue testing. Both ASTM standard sized specimens and subsized specimens are being fabricated or tested to contribute to a comprehensive mechanical property database of AM materials and to provide location-specific property data to the TCR digital platform. Mechanical testing at Argonne is conducted to ASME NQA-1 or its lab equivalent for quality assurance. This report presents the results of the creep tests at 550°C and microstructural characterization for the assessment of the effect of the post-build heat treatment on the creep behavior of AM 316L SS. It also discusses ongoing efforts on obtaining location-dependent properties of AM 316L SS.
