Lineaments of the Apennine Front - Apollo 15 landing site.

The well-developed systems of lineaments that suggest regional fracturing or layering of the bedrock in the mountains at the Apollo 15 site may be illusions created by oblique lighting rather than expressions of true geologic structure. Supporting evidence includes: (1) occurrence of similar dominant lineament trends on many of the slopes even though the slope orientations differ widely; (2) presence of a thick mantling regolith that should conceal bedrock structures; (3) approximate symmetry of some of the lineament sets about the sun line; (4) lack of clear-cut topographic expression for many of the lineaments; and (5) general similarity of the lunar lineaments to lineament patterns produced by low oblique lighting on model surfaces mantled by fine sifted powder. Locally, as at Silver Spur, some lineament trends are related to distinct topographic features and are more confidently interpreted to reflect underlying geologic structures.

Emission-line stars in the Chamaeleon T association.

Objective-prism spectrum surveys conducted in 1962 and in 1970 reveal 32 stars showing H-alpha emission in the region of the Chamaeleon T association. Twelve of these stars show variations in either continuum intensity or H-alpha intensity. The magnitudes range from V equals 8.4 (spectrum B9.5 Ve) to approximately 16. Slit spectra have been obtained of 13 stars. Seven show classifiable absorption-line spectra, four show completely veiled continua, and two lack blue spectra. The veiling is strongly correlated with variability. The second brightest emission-line star, CD - 76 486, shows significant spectrum variations between 1962 and 1972.

On the isotropy of the X-ray background radiation.

The spatial fluctuations expected for various models of the X-ray background radiation are examined. The constraints that observations place on the source distribution and radiation mechanisms are then presented. Most models are at present consistent with the lack of observed small scale anisotropy. Future measurements of the beam-to-beam fluctuations could offer a positive test of the inverse Compton explanation for the origin of the X-ray background radiation.

Jupiter's radiation belts.

A model for the production and loss of energetic electrons in Jupiter's radiation belt is presented. It is postulated that the electrons originate in the solar wind and are diffused in toward the planet by perturbations which violate the particles' third adiabatic invariant. At large distances, magnetic perturbations, electric fields associated with magnetospheric convection, or interchange instabilities driven by thermal plasma gradients may drive the diffusion. Inside about 10 Jupiter radii, the diffusion is probably driven by electric fields associated with the upper atmosphere dynamo which is driven by neutral winds in the ionosphere. The diurnal component of the dynamo wind fields produces a dawn-dusk asymmetry in the decimetric radiation from the electrons in the belts, and the lack of obvious measured asymmetries in the decimetric radiation measurements provides estimates of upper limits for these Jovian ionospheric neutral winds.

Satellite and ground-based observations of a red arc.

Simultaneous observations carried out during the red-arc period of Aug. 8-9, 1970 at Richland, Washington and by the Ogo 6 satellite are examined in the light of the present-day theoretical knowledge. The observed formation of the arc at the electron temperature peak and density trough supports the thermal-conduction theory of red-arc formation. The lack of dc electric fields in the red-arc region rules out these fields as an excitation mechanism. Particle precipitation as a direct source of red-line emission can also be ruled out by the observations presented. The formation of the arc in the plasmapause region and the detection of low-frequency ac fields are consistent with a theory that predicts wave-particle interaction at the plasmapause as a mechanism for supplying thermal energy to the plasmasphere electrons.

On the interstellar CO/+//CO abundance ratio.

A search at high sensitivity for interstellar absorption in the 4250-A line of CO(+) yields negative results toward 14 stars, despite the pervasive presence of large amounts of CO in the interstellar gas. This result is in accord with theory, but still lacks by a large factor sufficient sensitivity to test any details of the theory.

Advanced supersonic inlet technology.

Recently, relatively new analytical procedures have been successfully used to design bleed systems for mixed-compression inlets designed to operate efficiently up to Mach number 2.65. The procedures used constitute a major advance in inlet technology by offering a promising approach to attain high internal and external performance for mixed-compression inlets that operate over a large supersonic Mach number range. Unfortunately, there is a lack of data describing bleed hole performance characteristics to verify these procedures at high Mach numbers. This paper briefly discusses the analytical procedures for designing advanced inlet systems and suggests facility modifications wherein the procedures can be verified on large-scale inlet models up to approximately Mach number 4.5.

Avalanche mode of motion - Implications from lunar examples.

A large avalanche (21 square kilometers) at the Apollo 17 landing site moved out several kilometers over flat ground beyond its source slope. If not triggered by impacts, then it was as 'efficient' as terrestrial avalanches attributed to air-cushion sliding. Evidently lunar avalanches are able to flow despite the lack of lubricating or cushioning fluid.

Tektite ablation - Some confirming calculations.

The calculation of tektite ablation has been redone, taking into account transient effects, internal radiation, melting and nonequilibrium vaporization of the glass, and the drag effect of the flanges. It is found that the results confirm the earlier calculations of Chapman and his group and of Adams and his co-workers. The general trend of the results is not sensitive to reasonable changes of the physical parameters. The ablation is predominantly by melting rather than by vaporization at all velocities up to 11 km/sec; this is surprising in view of the lack of detectable melt flow in most tektites. Chemical effects have not been considered.

A study of B 6 stars.

Because detailed information about the spectra of normal late B type stars is deficient, a study of the spectrum of zeta-Draconis, beta-Sextantis, and alpha-Leonis was undertaken to fill this lack and to provide data for comparison with observations of Bp stars, many of which are of late B spectral type. The study was made from high dispersion spectrograms which cover the spectral region 3100 to 6700 A, and from OAO-II spectral scans covering the spectral region 1100 to 3600 A. Profiles, equivalent widths, and central intensities of many lines in the spectrum of zeta-Draconis and of the major lines of beta-Sextantis are presented. The star alpha-Leonis rotates too rapidly for these measurements to be made from high resolution spectrograms. The star beta-Sextantis is the most massive and hottest of the three stars studied.

Nature and origin of layered deposits of the Martian polar regions.

Layered deposits in the polar regions of Mars may be formed from fine dust ultimately derived from the canyons and other eroded terrains of the equatorial regions. An analysis of dust deposition in the area of annual frost cover predicts the formation of vast featureless domed plateaus underlaid by layered deposits of dust. Television observations suggest that these plateaus once existed, but they have now been dissected and stripped from most of the area of annual frost cover. A possible explanation is that a major secular change has occurred in the erosional environment of the Martian polar regions. Estimates of depositional rates of dust under current atmospheric conditions place the time span represented by the accumulation of layered deposits at about 500 m.y. Because of erosion, the present surface appears very young and lacks any impact craters. The present rate of water ice accumulation in the area of perennial frost is comparable to that of dust, and thus it is suggested that large quantities of water ice may be trapped with dust beneath the perennial frost caps.

Verification of performance of the Mariner 9 television cameras.

The large volume of picture data produced by the Mariner 9 Television Experiment, in addition to providing a description of the planet Mars, emphasizes the need for in situ verification of camera performance. Such data provide the basis for initial quantitative image interpretation by confirmation of the relevance of preflight measurement. This information must be the result of planned calibration sequences rather than extraction from nominal mission photography. A lack of sufficient numbers of frames restricted Mariner camera verifications to only limited operational modes under optimal conditions and required significant extrapolation over the duration of the mission. The evidence does suggest that measurable photometric changes occurred, whereas agreement with preflight data is observed for other parameters.

Effects of posture on exercise performance - Measurement by systolic time intervals.

Because posture significantly influences cardiac performance, the effects of moderate supine and upright ergometer exercise were compared on the basis of proportional (+37%) rate increments over resting control. Supine exercise produced significant decreases in left ventricular ejection time (LVET), pre-ejection period (PEP), and isovolumic contraction time (IVCT). Ejection time index (ETI) and corrected ejection time (LVETc) did not change significantly. Upright exercise produced greater decreases in PEP and LVET, but despite the rate increase there was no change in LVET, which resulted in sharp increases in ETI and LVETc. The discordant directional effects on LVET and its rate-correcting indices between the two postures were consistent with hemodynamic studies demonstrating lack of stroke volume change during supine exercise and increased stroke volume over control during light to moderate upright exercise.

Cytogenetic studies of the blood (M111), part A

The cytogenetic study of the crew appears to indicate that Skylab-type environmental conditions have no deleterious effect upon chromosomal material. The findings are, however, less clear-cut than might be desired, due in large measure to confounding of the experimental design by the administration of isotope injections for the purposes of other experiments and to the lack of control subjects.

Study of blood flow sensing with microwave radiometry

A study and experimental investigation has been performed to determine the feasibility of measuring regional blood flow and volume in man by means of microwave radiometry. An indication was expected of regional blood flow from measurement of surface and subsurface temperatures with a sensitive radiometer. Following theoretical modeling of biological tissue, to determine the optimum operating frequency for adequate sensing depth, a sensitive microwave radiometer was designed for operation at 793 MHz. A temperature sensitivity of of 0.06 K rms was realized in this equipment. Measurements performed on phantom tissue models, consisting of beef fat and lean beefsteak showed that the radiometer was capable of sensing temperatures from a depth between 3.8 and 5.1 cm. Radiometric and thermodynamic temperature measurements were also performed on the hind thighs of large dogs. These showed that the radiometer could sense subsurface temperatures from a depth of, at least, 1.3 cm. Delays caused by externally-generated RF interference, coupled with the lack of reliable blood flow measurement equipment, prevented correlation of radiometer readings with reginal blood flow. For the same reasons, it was not possible to extend the radiometric observations to human subjects.

Evaluation of remote sensing in control of pink bollworm in cotton

The author has identified the following significant results. The main objective is to evaluate the use of a satellite in monitoring the cotton production regulation program of the State of California as an aid in controlling pink bollworm infestation in the southern deserts of California. Color combined images of ERTS-1 multispectral images simulating color infrared are being used for crop identification. The status of each field (i.e., crop, bare, harvested, wet, plowed) is mapped from the imagery and is then compared to ground survey information taken at the time of ERTS-1 overflights. A computer analysis has been performed to compare field and satellite data to a crop calendar. Correlation to data has been 97% for field condition. Actual crop identification varies; cotton identification is only 63% due to lack of full season coverage.

Acquisition/expulsion system for earth orbital propulsion system study. Volume 4: Flight test article

Two orbital test plans were prepared to verify one of the passive cryogenic storage tank/feedline candidate designs. One plan considered the orbital test article to be launched as a dedicated payload using an Atlas F burner launching configuration. The second plan proposed to launch the orbital test article as a secondary payload on the Titan E/Centaur proof flight. The secondary payload concept was pursued until January 1973, when work to build the hardware for this phase of the contract was terminated for lack of a sponsor for the flight. The dedicated payload launched on an Atlas F is described.

The applicability of ERTS-1 data covering the major landforms of Kenya

The author has identified the following significant results. Five investigators report on the applicability of ERTS-1 data covering the major landforms of Kenya. Deficiencies due to lack of equipment, repetitive coverage and interpretation know-how are also reported on. Revision of lake shorelines is an immediate benefit. Basement system metasediments are rapidly differentiated, but dune areas are not readily distinguishable from sandy soils. Forest, moorland, high altitude grass, tea, and conifer plantations are readily distinguished, with podocarpus forest especially distinguishable from podocarpus/juniperus forest. In the arid areas physiographic features, indicating the major soil types, are readily identified and mapped. Preliminary vegetation type analysis in the Mara Game Reserve indicates that in a typical savannah area about 36% of the vegetation types are distinguishable at a scale of 1:1 million as well as drainage patterns and terrain features.
