Inflatable stretcher to transport patients

Inflatable plastic bag inside strong, inflexible outer bag facilitates emergency transport of seriously burned or disabled patients. When the bag is inflated the patient is completely immobilized and cushioned from external shock. Air for breathing, temperature controls and communications may be provided by appropriate plug-in connections.

Dynamic balancing of high-speed rotary machinery

Rotary dynamics test facility investigates and corrects imbalances in rotary components at speeds up to 60,000 rpm. Use of a vacuum chamber eliminates the effect of windage and facilitates the chilling of test pieces.

Digital decoder for phase-delay coded data

Coded or modulated digital data converts to nonreturn to zero /NRZ/ data. Technique includes logic implementation and pertinent timing diagrams. Demodulation to NRZ facilitates digital logic operations on incoming data. Phase-delay modulation has advantage of inherent self-timing not present in NRZ modulation.

Protective coating for salt-bath brazing

Ceramic coating, consisting of graphite, enameler's clay, and algin binder, applied to materials prior to salt bath brazing facilitates brazing process and results in superior joints. Alternate coating materials and their various proportions are given.

Psychrometric chart for physiological research

Chart facilitates use of graphical techniques for solving problems involving thermodynamic properties of moist air. The properties are presented, and their units of measurement are listed. Chart presenting conditions at standard atmosphere pressure at sea level is most useful.

NACA Conference on Aircraft Loads, Structures, and Flutter

This document contains reproductions of technical papers on some of the most recent research results on aircraft loads, flutter, and structures from the NACA laboratories. These papers were presented by members of the staff of the NACA laboratories at the Conference held at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory March 5, 6, and 7, 1957. The primary purpose of this Conference was to convey to contractors of the military services and others concerned with the design of aircraft these recent research results and to provide those attending an opportunity to discuss the results. The papers in this document are in the same form in which they were presented at the Conference in order to facilitate their prompt distribution. The original presentation and this record are considered as complementary to, rather than as substitutes for, the Committee?s more complete and formal reports. Accordingly, if information from this document is utilized it is requested that this document not be listed as a reference. Individual reports dealing with most of the information presented at the Conference will subsequently be published by NACA and will therefore be suitable as reference material.

Alignment microscope for rotating laser scanner

Microscopic assembly for alignment of rotary laser focuses on small film area along scan line at oblique angle. Suitable choice of angle and location of optical components project laser beam line as X coordinate reticle. Coordination with horizontal recticle line included microscope facilitates Y coordinate position indexing.

Reliability estimation procedures and CARE: The Computer-Aided Reliability Estimation Program

Ultrareliable fault-tolerant onboard digital systems for spacecraft intended for long mission life exploration of the outer planets are under development. The design of systems involving self-repair and fault-tolerance leads to the companion problem of quantifying and evaluating the survival probability of the system for the mission under consideration and the constraints imposed upon the system. Methods have been developed to (1) model self-repair and fault-tolerant organizations; (2) compute survival probability, mean life, and many other reliability predictive functions with respect to various systems and mission parameters; (3) perform sensitivity analysis of the system with respect to mission parameters; and (4) quantitatively compare competitive fault-tolerant systems. Various measures of comparison are offered. To automate the procedures of reliability mathematical modeling and evaluation, the CARE (computer-aided reliability estimation) program was developed. CARE is an interactive program residing on the UNIVAC 1108 system, which makes the above calculations and facilitates report preparation by providing output in tabular form, graphical 2-dimensional plots, and 3-dimensional projections. The reliability estimation of fault-tolerant organization by means of the CARE program is described.

Experiment M408: Beta spectrometer

The beta spectrometer functioned as planned throughout the Gemini 10 mission. The cool temperatures that were recorded from the instrument during the mission were indicative that the evaporative cooler, coupled with apparently lower-than-expected spacecraft-adapter temperatures, maintained ideal operating conditions. The data facilitate a good analysis of the electron directional distribution. The omnidirectional flux that was calculated is apparently consistent with previous measurements. Representative electron spectra, measured during the Gemini 12 mission, established the apparent decay of the artificially injected electrons (from the Starfish high altitude nuclear test) to such low levels that natural trapped electrons were becoming detectable.

Experiment M405: Tri-axis flux gate magnetometer

A tri-axis flux-gate magnetometer was used on four Gemini spacecraft for determination of the magnitude and direction of the local geomagnetic field with respect to the spacecraft. Conclusions derived from the data are not only important to the proton-electron spectrometer experiment, but also are of significance to any directional charged particle experiments that may be conducted. Even though the Gemini spacecraft was not clean magnetically, the data could be reduced to a form that supplied directional information on the magnetic field in relation to the spacecraft. Stray fields were the result of spacecraft structure, not the result of current flows that were produced within the spacecraft electrical systems. Efforts were made to reduce spacecraft stray fields and to facilitate the acquisition of more accurate data.
