Search for a bound di-neutron by comparing 3 He(e,e'p)d and 3 H(e,e'p)X measurements

We report on a search for a bound di-neutron by comparing electron-induced proton-knockout $(e,e'p)$ measurements from Helium-3 ($^3$He) and Tritium ($^3$H). The measurements were performed at Jefferson Lab Hall A with a 4.326 GeV electron beam, and kinematics of large momentum transfer $Q^2 \approx 1.9$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$ and $x_B>1$, to minimize contributions from non quasi-elastic (QE) reaction mechanisms. Analyzing the measured $^3$He missing mass ($M_{miss}$) and missing energy ($E_{miss}$) distributions, we can distinguish the two-body break-up reaction, in which the residual proton-neutron system remains bound as a deuteron. In the $^3$H mirror case, under the exact same kinematic conditions, we do not identify a signature for a bound di-neutron with similar binding energy to that of the deuteron. We calculate exclusion limits as a function of the di-neutron binding energy and find that, for binding equivalent to the deuteron, the two-body break-up cross section on $^3$H is less than 0.9% of that on $^3$He in the measured kinematics at the 95% confidence level.

Search for pair-production of vector-like quarks in pp collision events at s = 13 TeV with at least one leptonically decaying Z boson and a third-generation quark with the ATLAS detector

Herein a search for the pair-production of vector-like quarks optimized for decays into a Z boson and a third-generation Standard Model quark is presented, using the full Run 2 dataset corresponding to 139fb –1 of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13TeV, collected in 2015–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The targeted final state is characterized by the presence of a Z boson with high transverse momentum, reconstructed from a pair of same-flavour leptons with opposite-sign charges, as well as by the presence of b-tagged jets and high-transverse-momentum large-radius jets reconstructed from calibrated smaller-radius jets. Events with exactly two or at least three leptons are used, which are further categorized by the presence of boosted W, Z, and Higgs bosons and top quarks. The categorization is performed using a neural-network-based boosted object tagger to enhance the sensitivity to signal relative to the background. No significant excess above the background expectation is observed and exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on the masses of the vector-like partners T and B of the top and bottom quarks, respectively. The limits depend on the branching ratio configurations and, in the case of 100% branching ratio for T→Zt and 100% branching ratio for B→Zb, this search sets the most stringent limits to date, allowing m T >1.60TeV and m B >1.42TeV, respectively.

Search for pairs of muons with small displacements in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for new phenomena giving rise to pairs of opposite electrically charged muons with impact parameters in the millimetre range is presented, using 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search targets the gap in coverage between existing searches targeting final states with leptons with large displacement and prompt leptons. No significant excess over the background expectation is observed and exclusion limits are set on the mass of long-lived scalar supersymmetric muon-partners (smuons) with much lower lifetimes than previously targeted by displaced muon searches. Smuon lifetimes down to 1 ps are excluded for a smuon mass of 100 GeV, and smuon masses up to 520 GeV are excluded for a proper lifetime of 10 ps, at 95% confidence level. Finally, model-independent limits are set on the contribution from new phenomena to the signal-region yields.

Beam Spin Asymmetry Measurements of Deeply Virtual $π$ 0 Production with CLAS12

The new experimental measurements of beam spin asymmetry were performed for the deeply virtual exclusive $π$ 0 production in a wide kinematic region with the photon virtualities $Q$ 2 up to 8 GeV 2 and the Bjorken scaling variable $x$ $B$ in the valence regime. The data were collected by the CE BAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) at Jefferson Lab with longitudinally polarized 10.6 GeV electrons scattered on an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. Sizable asymmetry values indicate a substantial contribution from transverse virtual photon amplitudes to the polarized structure functions. The interpretation of these measurements in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) demonstrates their sensitivity to the chiral-odd GPD $\overline{E}$ $T$ , which contains information on quark transverse spin densities in unpolarized and polarized nucleons and provides access to the proton’s transverse anomalous magnetic moment. Additionally, the data were compared to a theoretical model based on a Regge formalism that was extended to the high photon virtualities.

Search for new Higgs bosons via same-sign top quark pair production in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the pp $\to$ tH/A $\to$ t$\mathrm{\bar{t}}$c and pp $\to$ tH/A $\to$ t$\mathrm{\bar{t}}$u processes. Here, H and A represent the extra scalar and pseudoscalar boson, respectively, of the second Higgs doublet in the generalized two-Higgs-doublet model (g2HDM). The search is based on pp collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Final states with a same-sign lepton pair in association with jets and missing transverse momentum are considered. New Higgs bosons in the 200-1000 GeV mass range and new Yukawa couplings between 0.1 and 1.0 are targeted in the search, for scenarios in which either H or A appear alone, or in which they coexist and interfere. No significant excess above the standard model prediction is observed. Exclusion limits are derived in the context of the g2HDM.

Combination of searches for pair-produced leptoquarks at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A statistical combination of various searches for pair-produced leptoquarks is presented, using the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data set of 139 fb -1 collected with the ATLAS detector from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. All possible decays of the leptoquarks into quarks of the third generation and charged or neutral leptons of any generation are investigated. Since no significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed in any of the individual analyses, combined exclusion limits are set on the production cross-sections for scalar and vector leptoquarks. The resulting lower bounds on leptoquark masses exceed those from the individual analyses by up to 100 GeV, depending on the signal hypothesis.

Search for pair-production of vector-like quarks in lepton+jets final states containing at least one b -tagged jet using the Run 2 data from the ATLAS experiment

A search is presented for the pair-production of heavy vector-like quarks in the lepton+jets final state using 140 fb -1 of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. The search is optimised for vector-like top-quarks (T) that decay into a W boson and a b-quark, with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other hadronically. Other vector-like quark flavours and decay modes are also considered. Events are selected with one high transverse-momentum electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, a large-radius jet identified as a W boson, and multiple small-radius jets, at least one of which is b-tagged. Vector-like T-quarks with 100% branching ratio to Wb are excluded at 95% CL for masses below 1700 GeV. These limits are also applied to vector-like Y-quarks, which decay exclusively into a W boson and a b-quark. Isospin singlets with B(T→Wb:Ht:Zt)=1/2:1/4:1/4 are excluded for masses below 1360 GeV.

Search for pair production of boosted Higgs bosons via vector-boson fusion in the $b$$\overline{b}$$b$$\overline{b}$ final state using $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs boson pair production via vector-boson fusion is performed in the Lorentz-boosted regime, where a Higgs boson candidate is reconstructed as a single large-radius jet, using 140 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Only Higgs boson decays into bottom quark pairs are considered. The search is particularly sensitive to the quartic coupling between two vector bosons and two Higgs bosons relative to its Standard Model prediction, K 2V . This study constrains K 2V to 0.55 < K 2V < 1.49 at the 95% confidence level. The value K 2V = 0 is excluded with a significance of 3.8 standard deviations with other Higgs boson couplings fixed to their Standard Model values. A search for new heavy spin-0 resonances that would mediate Higgs boson pair production via vector-boson fusion is carried out in the mass range of 1–5 TeV for the first time under several model and decay-width assumptions. No significant deviation from the Standard Model hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived.

Study of WH production through vector boson scattering and extraction of the relative sign of the W and Z couplings to the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

A search for the production of a W boson and a Higgs boson through vector boson scattering (VBS) is presented, using CMS data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV collected from 2016 to 2018. The integrated luminosity of the data sample is 138 fb −1 . Selected events must be consistent with the presence of two jets originating from VBS, the leptonic decay of the W boson to an electron or muon, possibly also through an intermediate τ lepton, and a Higgs boson decaying into a pair of b quarks, reconstructed as either a single merged jet or two resolved jets. A measurement of the process as predicted by the standard model (SM) is performed alongside a study of beyond-the-SM (BSM) scenarios. The SM analysis sets an observed (expected) 95% cofidence level upper limit of 14.3 (9.9) on the ratio of the measured VBS WH cross section to that expected by the SM. The BSM analysis, conducted within the so-called 𝜅 framework, excludes all scenarios with 𝜆 WZ < 0 that are consistent with current measurements, where 𝜆 WZ = 𝜅 W ∕𝜅 Z and 𝜅 W and 𝜅 Z are the HWW and HZZ coupling modfiers, respectively. The significance of the exclusion is beyond 5 standard deviations, and it is consistent with the SM expectation of 𝜆 WZ = 1.

Search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light hadronically decaying resonance in pp collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for decays of the Higgs boson into a Z boson and a light resonance, with a mass of 0.5–3.5 GeV, is performed using the full 140 fb−1 dataset of 13 TeV proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2. Leptonic decays of the Z boson and hadronic decays of the light resonance are considered. The resonance can be interpreted as a J / ψ or η c meson, an axion-like particle, or a light pseudoscalar predicted in two-Higgs-doublet models. Due to its low mass, this resonance is produced with a high Lorentz boost in the laboratory frame and therefore reconstructed as a single small-radius jet of hadrons. A neural network is used to correct the Monte Carlo simulation of the total expected background using data from sideband regions. Two additional neural networks are used to distinguish signal from background, enhancing the purity of the signal region. A binned profile-likelihood fit is performed on the final-state invariant mass distribution. No significant excess of events relative to the expected background is observed, and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the Higgs boson's branching fraction to a Z boson and a light resonance. The exclusion limit is ∼10% for the lower masses, and increases for higher masses. Upper limits on the effective coupling C Z H eff / Λ of an axion-like particle to a Higgs boson and Z boson are also set at 95% confidence level, and range from 0.9 to 2 TeV−1.

Searching for neutrino self-interactions at future muon colliders

Multi-TeV muon colliders offer a powerful means of accessing new physics coupled to muons while generating clean and intense high-energy neutrino beams via muon decays. We study a fixed-target experiment leveraging the neutrino beams and a forward detector pointing at the interaction point of the muon collider. The sensitivity to neutrino self-interactions is analyzed as a feasibility study, focusing on the leptonic scalar ϕ exclusively coupled to the Standard Model neutrinos. Our work shows that projections from both the main and forward detectors can enhance the existing limits by two orders of magnitude, surpassing other future experiments.

Probing spin and lifetime correlations in entangled hyperon-antihyperon pairs

Quantum entanglement has now been demonstrated in several hadronic systems, revealing that non-classical spin correlations survive even through the strong-interaction hadronization process. To date, however, all studies have focused exclusively on angular observables, leaving the possibility untouched that quantum coherence might also influence the decay times of entangled partners. In this work we propose data-driven tests of spin-lifetime and lifetime-lifetime correlations for $Λ-\bar{Λ}$ pairs produced in high-energy collisions. By examining the opening-angle distribution in slices of $Δt$, constructing a pair-wise spin-lifetime correlator, and testing a simple lifetime-lifetime covariance, we search for deviations from independent exponential decay that align with known spin correlations. Observation of nonzero lifetime correlations would compel a reassessment of how entanglement manifests in decaying systems, revealing hitherto unexplored temporal coherence.

Search for CP violation in events with top quarks and Z bosons at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 and 13.6 TeV

A search for the violation of the charge-parity (CP) symmetry in the production of top quarks in association with Z bosons is presented, using events with at least three charged leptons and additional jets. The search is performed in a sample of proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and in 2022 at 13.6 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 173 fb –1 . For the first time in this final state, observables that are odd under the CP transformation are employed. Also for the first time, physics-informed machine-learning techniques are used to construct these observables. While for standard model (SM) processes the distributions of these observables are predicted to be symmetric around zero, CP-violating modifications of the SM would introduce asymmetries. Two CP-odd operators $\mathcal{O}$$^{I}_{tW}$ and $\mathcal{O}$$^{I}_{tZ}$ in the SM effective field theory are considered that may modify the interactions between top quarks and electroweak bosons. The obtained results are consistent with the SM prediction within two standard deviations, and exclusion limits on the associated Wilson coefficients of –2.7 < $c$$^{I}_{tW}$ < 2.5 and –0.2 < $c$$^{I}_{tZ}$ < 2.0 and are set at 95 % confidence level. The largest discrepancy is observed in $c$$^{I}_{tZ}$ where data is consistent with positive values, with an observed local significance with respect to the SM hypothesis of 2.5 standard deviations, when only linear terms are considered.

Review of top quark mass measurements in CMS

The top quark mass is one of the most intriguing parameters of the standard model (SM). Its value indicates a Yukawa coupling close to unity, and the resulting strong ties to Higgs physics make the top quark mass a crucial ingredient for understanding essential aspects of the electroweak sector of the SM. This review offers the first comprehensive overview of the top quark mass measurements performed by the CMS Collaboration using the data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Moreover, a detailed description of the top quark event reconstruction is provided and dedicated studies of the dominant uncertainties in the modelling of the signal processes are discussed. The interpretation of the experimental results on the top quark mass in terms of the SM Lagrangian parameter is challenging and is a focus of an ongoing discussion in the theory community. The CMS Collaboration has performed two main types of top quark mass measurements, addressing this challenge from different perspectives: highly precise ‘direct’ measurements, based on reconstructed top quark decay products and relying exclusively on Monte-Carlo simulations, as well as ‘indirect’ measurements, where the simulations are employed to determine parton-level cross sections that are compared to fixed-order perturbative calculations. Recent mass extractions using Lorentz-boosted top quarks open a new avenue of measurements based on top quark decay products contained in a single particle jet, with promising prospects for accurate theoretical interpretations.

Effect of Microstructure on Chain Flexibility and Glass Transition Temperature of Polybenzofulvene

Polybenzofulvene (PBF) is a polydiene with a very high glass transition temperature (T g ), which makes it a potential candidate for use as the hard block for high-temperature thermoplastic elastomer applications. The T g s of polydienes are known to be related to chain flexibility. However, no studies have been reported that correlate the chain flexibility to the microstructure of PBF. Herein, we present a study of solution properties of linear PBFs with narrow molecular weight dispersity and having 1,2-addition ranging from 23% to 99%. The materials were prepared by living anionic polymerization under different conditions. Specifically, the chain flexibility as defined by the Flory's characteristic ratio, , and dependence of chain flexibility on microstructure by combined measurements of intrinsic viscosity and molecular weight using triple-detector size exclusion chromatography (SEC) is studied. The persistence lengths (l p ) and chain diameters (d B ) were also estimated using the touched-bead wormlike chain model. To the best of our knowledge, the characteristic ratio of PBF is found to be the highest of all polydienes that have been reported so far.

Styrene Thermal Decomposition and Its Reaction with Acetylene under Shock Tube Pyrolysis Conditions: an Experimental and Kinetic Modeling Study

Styrene is an important compound for polymer production and a key intermediate in gas-phase kinetics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). For the first time, the pyrolysis of styrene with and without the presence of acetylene is investigated in a single-pulse shock tube coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. For each reaction system, quantitative speciation profiles are probed within the temperature range of 1100-1730 K, nominal pressure of 20 bar, and reaction duration of similar to 4 ms. A kinetic model is built to simulate the results. The model explains how styrene is consumed under high-pressure pyrolytic conditions, how the secondary chemistry of intermediate products affect subsequent PAH formation, and how acetylene addition alters the reaction pathways. Throughout the temperature range, styrene breakdown is dominated by the bimolecular interaction between styrene and hydrogen atom, which produces benzene+vinyl or phenyl and ethylene through the stabilization of 2-phenylethyl and its subsequent dissociation. As a result, large amounts of phenyl accumulate, which react with styrene to form C14H12 species while simultaneously releasing H atoms through addition/elimination reactions. The reactivity of fuel consumption is preserved by the regeneration of H atoms as chain carriers. Several C14H10 compounds are formed as a result of the following breakdown of the C14H12 isomers, particularly stilbene, 1,1-diphenyl ethylene, and 9-methyl-9H-fluorene. The presence of acetylene as a co-reactant with styrene allows the Hydrogen-Abstraction-Acetylene-Addition (HACA) pathway to proceed from phenyl radical to enhance the production of phenylacetylene at very low temperatures and acenaphthylene. This hinders the formation of C14H12 isomers, exclusive products from pure styrene dissociation by competing with the styrene+phenyl routes.

Wave energy resources assessment for the multi-modal sea state of Hawaii

This paper describes development and validation of a 32-year wave hindcast for Hawaii as part of the wave energy resources assessment for the Exclusive Economic Zones of the US and affiliated territories. The nested model system comprises structured WAVEWATCH III models for the entire globe and the Central North Pacific as well as an unstructured SWAN model around the Hawaiian Islands with wind forcing from the Global Forecast System Reanalysis and its regional downscaling. The development effort follows the standards introduced by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The hindcast dataset was firstly validated with buoy measurements in terms of the six IEC wave energy resources parameters including the omnidirectional wave power ????, significant wave height ????????0, energy period ????????, spectral width ????0, direction of maximum directionally resolved wave power ?????????? ????????, and directionality coefficient ????. The comparison shows good overall agreement but with greater uncertainties for the spectral parameters ????0, ???????????????????? , and ???? formulated for narrow band spectra. The multimodal sea state in Hawaii always includes a mix of short-period wind seas, long-period swells from the North and South Pacific as well as waves with moderate periods from multiple sources. We partition the hindcast spectra based on the respective period ranges and directions and validate the partitioned spectral energy and parameters with measured values for implementation in wave energy resources assessment. The partitioned wave parameters from the hindcast allow separate seasonal descriptions of wind seas, north and south swells, and moderate-period waves for in-depth understanding of the wave climate and resources in Hawaii.

Sulphur variations in annually layered stalagmites using benchtop micro-XRF

Variation of sulphur in annually laminated stalagmites can be used to infer the impact of past volcanic activities, anthropogenic pollution, and climate change due to increased bushfire activity. The synchrotron radiation micro-X-Ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) microprobe is a powerful tool to analyse and image sulphur recorded in stalagmites with micrometre resolution. However, access to SR-XRF beamlines can be limited, so researchers must select the most promising stalagmites for imaging. Benchtop micro-XRF is an effective tool for trace elemental analysis of speleothem samples and is a candidate for routine laboratory measurement of sulphur along stalagmite laminae and screening for SR-XRF. Here, this study describes a protocol using matrix-matched standards to measure annual variations of sulphur at trace to percent level along the laminae of two Western Australian stalagmites, one of which already having been analysed using SR-XRF. Parameters that affected quantitation include X-ray tube voltage and current, spot size of the X-ray beam and stalagmite surface roughness and porosity. The use of a 20 μm X-ray spot size provides sub-annual spatial resolution that can be completed in an overnight scan. The features in a 1000 point micro-XRF analysis of sulphur along a 20 mm transect show good consistency with SR-XRF microprobe data. Micro-XRF mapping was also performed to produce chemical images on the stalagmite and compared with Raman and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm that the stalagmite is exclusively calcite, with no aragonite, and that the source of sulphur in the samples was gypsum and anhydrite. Regions of very high sulphur in the micro-XRF maps were found to be artefacts due to diffraction of the incident beam but these could be efficiently removed by using a multiple point statistics approach to produce a clean image suitable for analysis of the laminae. This work shows the potential of micro-XRF for routine analysis of sulphur in stalagmites, and to streamline sample characterisation before SR-XRF imaging.
