An Analog Computer Study of the Low-Frequency Flow Dynamics of Two Nuclear-Rocket Cold-Flow Engine Systems

An analog computer study is made of the low-frequency flow dynamics observed with liquid hydrogen flowing in two different nuclear-rocket cold-flow (unfueled) engine systems. The prediction of the low-frequency response depends largely upon the generation of the proper mass-flow storage in the system. This is achieved by relating, in the model lumping, the average values of fluid enthalpy and a certain thermodynamic fluid property. A two-phase state equation is derived for thermodynamic equilibrium between the gas and liquid phases. Parametric studies are made which demonstrate the effect of the pump characteristics on the flow damping.

Optimal inputs for system identification

Identification criteria are presented for linear dynamic systems with and without process noise. With process noise, the state equations are replaced by the Kalman filter equations. If the identification performance index is expanded in a Taylor's series with respect to the parameters to be identified, then maximizing the weighting factor of the quadratic term with respect to the inputs will insure that an identification algorithm will converge more rapidly and to a more accurate result than with nonoptimal inputs. The expectation of this weighting factor is the Fisher information matrix, and its inverse is a lower bound for the covariance of the parameters. Direct and indirect methods of calculating the information matrix are presented for systems with and without process noise.

A multifilter phase-lock loop.

The phase model for the generalized multifilter phase-lock loop (M PLL) is considered and state equations for this model are derived. A linear analysis is presented to aid in the preliminary design of an M PLL and to indicate the noise improvement over a conventional phase-lock loop (PLL). Performance characteristics are examined for an M PLL with low-pass and bandpass characteristics used in a specific FM communication system. Both single and double sinusoidal FM are used and a region of proper operation of the M PLL is determined in terms of modulation index and modulati ng frequency. These results are obtained from both analog and digital computer simulation of the nonlinear system.

Stochastic estimates of gradient from laser measurements for an autonomous Martian roving vehicle

The general problem of estimating the state vector x from the state equation h = Ax where h, A, and x are all stochastic, is presented. Specifically, the problem is for an autonomous Martian roving vehicle to utilize laser measurements in estimating the gradient of the terrain. Error exists due to two factors - surface roughness and instrumental measurements. The errors in slope depend on the standard deviations of these noise factors. Numerically, the error in gradient is expressed as a function of instrumental inaccuracies. Certain guidelines for the accuracy of permissable gradient must be set. It is found that present technology can meet these guidelines.

Input frequency requirements for identification through Liapunov methods

A theorem is derived which specifies a sufficient number of input frequencies to guarantee identification of an unknown noise free linear plant. Since all of the referenced work relates to sufficient conditions for nulling of the parameter error vector, it is to be expected that various conditions on the system to be identified will have been imposed. It was found that some of these conditions appear to be necessary while others do not. The main contribution is to provide a theorem which considers the effect of unknown parameters in the state equation upon the frequency requirements.

Digital computer simulation of inductor-energy-storage dc-to-dc converters with closed-loop regulators

The simulation of converter-controller combinations by means of a flexible digital computer program which produces output to a graphic display is discussed. The procedure is an alternative to mathematical analysis of converter systems. The types of computer programming involved in the simulation are described. Schematic diagrams, state equations, and output equations are displayed for four basic forms of inductor-energy-storage dc to dc converters. Mathematical models are developed to show the relationship of the parameters.

A model of heat transfer in immersed man

An equation representing man's thermal balance under water is considered. The equation states that the body thermal loading from metabolic heat production and artificial heat input must be offset by respiratory and environmental heat exchange to maintain a constant body temperature. Critical body regions are affected by cold-water thermal stress. A model of the thermoregulatory system may be divided into the physical-controlled system and the dynamic controlling system. The thermal model is simulated by computer programs.

Elliptic integral solutions to a class of space flight optimization problems

This paper is initially concerned with the minimum-time, exoatmospheric flight of a rocket with constant thrust acceleration magnitude, as in the cases of nuclear and solar electric propulsion. Gravitational acceleration is assumed to be a constant scalar multiple of the radius vector, plus a correction term which is a given function of time. The solution to the state equations is obtained in terms of elliptic integrals. A method is presented for the solution of the two-point boundary-condition problem associated with orbital transfer. At most, the latter method requires iteration upon final time, angle of injection, and two other parameters which are bounded. An example problem is provided which involves a rocket with very low thrust and a spiraling trajectory of many revolutions, but an altitude change of only several hundred miles above the earth. Finally, the original elliptic integral solution is extended to a larger class of low and intermediate thrust problems with constant thrust magnitude, mass decreasing with time, and an inverse square gravitational force.
