SERT 2 gimbal system

The gimbal system is described that was designed to mount the thruster and to reposition the thrust vector of a mercury ion bombardment thruster through the center of gravity of the SERT 2 assembly. The SERT 2 assembly was launched 3 February 1970. The gimbal ring, gimbal mounts, bearings, actuators, and environmental testing are described. Due to the accurate alinements provided, it was not necessary to use the gimbal for the intended function. However, the gimbals were operated successfully numerous times in space after 8 months of storage.

Development of a space stable thermal control coatings for use in large space vehicles

The preparation and evaluation of zinc orthotitanate and of several new pigments and the environmental testing and evaluation of these pigments and of coatings made from them constitute the bulk of the work accomplished. New pigments were prepared and EPR spectra of pigments and their precursor compounds studied. Results of extensive testing of commercially-available, strippable, protective coatings are reported; Owens-Illinois 650 glass resin has been stabilized against progressive mechanical failures; and definite improvements have been noted. A zinc oxide pigmented lithium silicate paint has demonstrated very good ultraviolet stability.

Mission definition study for Stanford relativity satellite. Volume 3: Appendices

An analysis is presented for the cost of the mission as a function of the following variables: amount of redundancy in the spacecraft, amount of care taken in building the spacecraft (functional and environmental tests, screening of components, quality control, etc), and the number of flights necessary to accomplish the mission. Thermal analysis and mathematical models for the experimental components are presented. The results of computer structural and stress analyses for support and cylinders are discussed. Reliability, quality control, and control system simulation by computer are also considered.

Design considerations for combined radiation effects facilities for twelve year outer planet spacecraft voyages

The design considerations influencing the choice and utility of environmental simulation methods and facilities are described, insofar as they relate to the requirements imposed on outer planet spacecraft because of radiation environments to be expected. Possible means for duplicating the radioisotope thermoelectric generator radiation environment, and for duplicating the effects of the trapped radiation belt environment are described, together with an assessment of radiation levels to be expected in the vicinity of an environmental testing chamber when in use.

The effects of radiation on the outer planets grand tour

A handbook is presented which was designed to accompany an oral presentation on the effects of radiation on the outer planets grand tour (OPGT). A summary of OPGT radiation environments expected from natural sources and the radioisotope thermoelectric generators and basic radiation effects and processes are reviewed, and ionization and displacement effects are examined. The presentation summarizes the effects of radiation on miscellaneous spacecraft materials and devices. The annealing and hardening of electronics are described. Special emphasis is placed on microcircuits. Mathematical modeling of circuits affected by radiation and radiation environmental testing are discussed. A review of means of evaluating the performance and correcting failures of irradiated devices is also presented.

The degradation of space shuttle TPS metals in dissociated oxygen.

The interaction of space shuttle orbiter Thermal Protection System (TPS) metals with the chemical environment to which it is exposed during reentry is considered with emphasis on the effects of dissociated oxygen. Experimental results comparing the interactions of atomic (dissociated) and molecular oxygen with five candidate shuttle TPS metals, Ni-20Cr-2ThO2, Ni-20Cr-3.5Al-2ThO2, Ni-16Cr-15Fe-2Mn-.5Si-.3La-2ThO2, Haynes Alloy Number 188, and Ti-6Al-4V at their maximum planned use temperature are presented. As measured by metal recession, weight change, rate of oxide scale formation, and scale spalling, the first four metals show enhanced degradation in a dissociated oxygen environment. The enhanced degradation appears to result from differing rates of alloy constituent reactions in the two environments. The dissociated oxygen environmental tests are found to better assess the usefulness of shuttle skin materials for the planned mission than do conventional molecular (either flowing or static) oxidation experiments.-

Performance characteristics of proximity focused ultraviolet image converters

Performance characteristics of Bendix type BX 8025-4522 proximity focused image tubes for ultraviolet to visible light conversion are presented. Quantum efficiency, resolution, background, geometric distortion, and environmental test results are discussed. The converters use magnesium fluoride input windows with Cs - Te photocathodes, and P-11 phosphors on fiber optic output windows.
