Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Electronic Structures of Lanthanide Indium Perovskites LnInO 3

Ternary lanthanide indium oxides LnInO 3 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction and characterized by Xray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement of the powder patterns showed the LnInO 3 materials to be orthorhombic perovskites belonging to the space group Pnma, based on almost-regular InO 6 octahedra and highly distorted LnO 12 polyhedra. Experimental structural data were compared with results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing a hybrid Hamiltonian. Valence region X-ray photoelectron and K-shell X-ray emission and absorption spectra of the LnInO 3 compounds were simulated with the aid of the DFT calculations. Photoionization of lanthanide 4f orbitals gives rise to a complex final-state multiplet structure in the valence region for the 4f n compounds PrInO 3 , NdInO 3 , and SmInO 3 , and the overall photoemission spectral profiles were shown to be a superposition of final-state 4f n-1 terms onto the cross-section weighted partial densities of states from the other orbitals. The occupied 4f states are stabilized in moving across the series Pr-Nd-Sm. Band gaps were measured using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. These results demonstrated that the band gap of LaInO 3 is 4.32 eV, in agreement with DFT calculations. This is significantly larger than a band gap of 2.2 eV first proposed in 1967 and based on the idea that In 4d states lie above the top of the O 2p valence band. However, both DFT and X-ray spectroscopy show that In 4d is a shallow core level located well below the bottom of the valence band. Band gaps greater than 4 eV were observed for NdInO 3 and SmInO 3 , but a lower gap of 3.6 eV for PrInO 3 was shown to arise from the occupied Pr 4f states lying above the main O 2p valence band.

Using Hyperoptimized Tensor Networks and First-Principles Electronic Structure to Simulate the Experimental Properties of the Giant {Mn 84 } Torus

The single-molecule magnet {Mn 84 } is a challenge to theory because of its high nuclearity. Here, we directly compute two experimentally accessible observables, the field-dependent magnetization up to 75 T and the temperature-dependent heat capacity, using parameter-free theory. In particular, we use first-principles calculations to derive short- and long-range exchange interactions and compute the exact partition function of the resulting classical Potts and Ising spin models for all 84 Mn S = 2 spins to obtain observables. The latter computation is made possible by using hyperoptimized tensor network contractions, a technique developed to simulate quantum supremacy circuits. We also synthesize the magnet and measure its heat capacity and magnetization, observing qualitative agreement between theory and experiment and identifying an unusual bump in the heat capacity and a plateau in the magnetization. Our work also identifies some limitations of current theoretical modeling in large magnets, such as sensitivity to small, long-range exchange couplings.

Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl Metalloradical Iron Complexes Containing Redox Noninnocent α-Diimine-Type Ligands: Synthesis, Molecular, and Electronic Structures

The synthesis and characterization of pentamethylcyclopentadienyl iron complexes bearing the redox non-innocent α-diimine (N,N'-dimesitylbutane-2,3-diimine, Mes DI) and α-iminopyridine (N-mesityl(pyridin-2-yl)ethanimine Mes PI) ligands were explored. One-pot reduction and complexation of the cyclopentadienyl ring was accomplished by treatment of (κ 2 -N,N')FeCl 2 (N,N'= Mes DI or Mes PI) pre-cursors with [C 5 Me 5 ]Li. The resulting iron compounds were characterized by paramagnetic 1 H NMR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, zero-field 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, low-temperature EPR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The combined spectroscopic, structural and DFT computational data supported low-spin iron(III) compounds (S Fe = ½) with π-acidic, formally doubly-reduced chelating ligands.
