Electrical Submersible Pumps: A System Modeling Approach for Power Quality Analysis With Variable Frequency Drives

This article proposes a high-level engineering guide to develop an integrated system model for power quality analysis in electrical submersible pump (ESP) applications with variable frequency drives (VFDs). Such analyses are troublesome in the industry due to the complexity of these systems. In this article, simple steps to perform system integration analyses of such arrangements, including torsional analysis, are developed. A simplified VFD-ESP model suitable for coupled electrical and mechanical analysis in steady state is proposed in all their configurations of practical interest. Such a model can be easily implemented in common simulation software, significantly reducing engineering efforts for implementation and analysis. The focus of the proposed model is the prediction of ESP failures that might result from a poor power quality caused by VFDs. Analytical expressions of different types of harmonics in these systems, as well as their accurate locations in the frequency domain, including their interharmonics and common-mode harmonics, are derived for this purpose. Further, the effectiveness of the proposed model is verified through offline and real-time hybrid simulation results. Finally, a comparison between simulation results obtained using the proposed model and measurements collected on a down-scale laboratory prototype is carried out to demonstrate the accuracy of the suggested modeling approach.

Autonomous Grid Support Functionality in Variable-Speed Drive-Based End-Use Loads

High penetration of inverter-based resources into power systems causes lower inertia, and it becomes more challenging to maintain grid stability during contingency events. While conventional demand response and shedding at the load side suffer from slow response, impact by unavailability, and issues from communication, variable-speed drives (VSDs) are becoming strong candidates for fast frequency response (FFR) thanks to their fast response and reduced user impact from variable power adjustment capability. In this letter, we propose an autonomous frequency support control method for a residential refrigerator with a VSD, a promising target small end-use load for FFR. We analyze the effect of the proposed controller on grid stability, and we verify the performance through laboratory experiments with a commercially available refrigerator.

Exploring Benchmarks for Self-Driving Labs using Color Matching

Self Driving Labs (SDLs) that combine automation of experimental procedures with autonomous decision making are gaining popularity as a means of increasing the throughput of scientific workflows. The task of identifying quantities of supplied colored pigments that match a target color, the color matching problem, provides a simple and flexible SDL test case, as it requires experiment proposal, sample creation, and sample analysis, three common components in autonomous discovery applications. We present a robotic solution to the color matching problem that allows for fully autonomous execution of a color matching protocol. Our solution leverages the WEI science factory platform to enable portability across different robotic hardware, the use of alternative optimization methods for continuous refinement, and automated publication of results for experiment tracking and post-hoc analysis.

Medium Voltage Integrated Drive and Motor

The objective of this program was to design, build, and test a medium voltage (4,160VAC) high speed permanent magnet machine (HSPMM) and variable speed drive (VSD) that incorporates next generation 10kV silicon carbide (SiC) modules. The use of a HSPMM allows for high efficiency, small footprint, maintenance free operation while the SiC modules enable higher voltage operating conditions, improved efficiency, and small footprint.

Research Problems Associated with Limiting the Applied Force in Vibration Tests and Conducting Base-Drive Modal Vibration Tests

The intent of this paper is to make a case for developing and conducting vibration tests which are both realistic and practical (a question of tailoring versus standards). Tests are essential for finding things overlooked in the analyses. The best test is often the most realistic test which can be conducted within the cost and budget constraints. Some standards are essential, but the author believes more in the individual's ingenuity to solve a specific problem than in the application of standards which reduce problems (and technology) to their lowest common denominator. Force limited vibration tests and base-drive modal tests are two examples of realistic, but practical testing approaches. Since both of these approaches are relatively new, a number of interesting research problems exist, and these are emphasized herein.

Concepts for Multi-Speed Rotorcraft Drive System - Status of Design and Testing at NASA GRC

In several studies and on-going developments for advanced rotorcraft, the need for variable multi-speed capable rotors has been raised. Speed changes of up to 50 have been proposed for future rotorcraft to improve vehicle performance. A rotor speed change during operation not only requires a rotor that can perform effectively over the operating speedload range, but also requires a propulsion system possessing these same capabilities. A study was completed investigating possible drive system arrangements that can accommodate up to a 50 speed change. Key drivers were identified from which simplicity and weight were judged as central. This paper presents the current status of two gear train concepts coupled with the first of two clutch types developed and tested thus far with focus on design lessons learned and areas requiring development. Also, a third concept is presented, a dual input planetary differential as leveraged from a simple planetary with fixed carrier.

Seasonal mixing from intermittent flow drives concentration-discharge behaviour in a stream affected by coal mine drainage

Abandoned mining operations continue to severely degrade many ecosystems worldwide by releasing acidic water and/or heavy metals into surface and groundwater. Contaminant concentrations in affected streams vary with discharge in patterns that reflect both geochemical reactions and variable mixing of contaminated and non-contaminated waters. However, controls on concentration-discharge (C-Q) patterns remain unclear, particularly for constituents that experience changing solubility across redox and pH gradients. Understanding the C-Q behaviour of contaminants aids in predicting both downstream transport and effects on aquatic life under variable flow. Here, we examined the C-Q behaviours of non-reactive (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl - ) and reactive (Fe, Mn, Al, H + , SO 4 2- ) solutes in a stream contaminated with acid mine drainage in northeastern Ohio, USA. Concentration-discharge patterns at the watershed outlet primarily reflected mixing of contaminated baseflow with intermittent inputs of high pH water draining from a passive limestone treatment system into the stream. The treatment system acted as an ephemeral tributary that mitigated contamination in the stream by diluting solutes, raising pH, and driving metal precipitation, but only when flow was present during wet seasons. Consequently, AMD-derived reactive solutes (H + , Fe, Mn, Al) decreased with increasing stream discharge while relatively conservative solutes (e.g., Ca, Mg, K, Na) decreased only slightly or were chemostatic. This study highlights both the unique C-Q patterns of reactive solutes when compared to those of non-reactive solutes and the potential for intermittent streams to control C-Q behaviour in headwater catchments.

Simultaneously Integrating Single Atomic Cobalt Sites and Co 9 S 8 Nanoparticles into Hollow Carbon Nanotubes as Trifunctional Electrocatalysts for Zn–Air Batteries to Drive Water Splitting

The development of rechargeable metal–air batteries and water electrolyzers are highly constrained by electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the construction of efficient trifunctional electrocatalysts for ORR/OER/HER are highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, hollow carbon nanotubes integrated single cobalt atoms with Co9S8 nanoparticles (CoSA + Co 9 S 8 /HCNT) are fabricated by a straightforward in situ self-sacrificing strategy. The structure of the CoSA + Co 9 S 8 /HCNT are verified by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Theoretical calculations and experimental results embrace the synergistic effects between Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles and single cobalt atoms through optimizing the electronic configuration of the CoN4 active sites to lower the reaction barrier and facilitating the ORR, OER, and HER simultaneously. Consequently, rechargeable liquid and all-solid-state flexible Zn–air batteries based on CoSA + Co 9 S 8 /HCNT exhibit remarkable stability and excellent power density of 177.33 and 51.85 mW cm -2 , respectively, better than Pt/C + RuO 2 counterparts. Moreover, the as-fabricated Zn–air batteries can drive an overall water splitting device assembled with CoSA + Co 9 S 8 /HCNT and achieve a current density of 10 mA cm -2 at a low voltage of 1.59 V, also superior to Pt/C + RuO 2 . Therefore, we conclude, this work presents a promising approach to an efficient trifunctional electrocatalyst toward practical applications.
