ASPIRES: Airport Shuttle Planning and Improved Routing Event-driven Simulation

Most of the existing traffic simulation packages require significant calibration work to be able to reflect reality. To evaluate special operations including emerging technologies, a microscopic simulation that tracks detailed interactions of all the elements of the traffic systems is usually needed. This type of simulation is usually computationally demanding. This work developed an Airport Shuttle Planning and Improved Routing Event-driven Simulation (ASPIRES) package to simulate and evaluate current, potential, and future airport shuttle operations. Here, the simulation was driven by data and thus did not require much calibration effort. The discrete-event simulation nature of ASPIRES makes the simulation computationally efficient. Simulating 1 day of shuttle operations takes less than 2s. The study site of this work is the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in the U.S. The shuttle service that connects the five terminals of the airport and the rental car center was studied. Travel times, dwell times, and passenger arrivals were simulated using empirical distributions derived mainly from real data to capture the stochastic nature of the rental car center shuttle bus operations. Data on bus miles traveled, bus energy consumption, passenger wait times, and passengers left behind at stops were collected to study the trade-off between energy use and passenger experience. Electric bus and on-demand bus operations were also included. The simulation outputs can show passengers statistics at terminals, shuttles statistics, and charging station statistics. ASPIRES cannot be used to model a generic traffic system but is well-suited for fleet systems.

Potential for Transactive Energy to Improve the Provisioning of Grid Services from Batteries

This study assessed the degree to which transactive energy systems could help reduce or remove barriers to the deployment of battery energy storage, and realize the full potential of battery resources to supply needed services to the grid and fairly compensate various types of battery owners. To enable this assessment, typical battery deployments were characterized, along with energy markets, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Order rulings and implementations, grid services, and current deployment barriers. Finally, this study analyzed the value that accrues to batteries supplying today’s grid services as a function of the participation models associated with three primary types of battery ownership: merchant-owned transmission-connected batteries; utility-owned distribution-connected batteries; and customer-owned behind-the-meter batteries. This provided both quantitative and qualitative assessments comparing opportunities for battery storage in business-as-usual and transactive energy scenarios.

Hardware-in-the-Loop Evaluation of Grid-Edge DER Chip Integration Into Next-Generation Smart Meters

To facilitate the implementation of distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS), we propose to insert a grid-edge distributed energy resource (DER) chip hosting a DERMS algorithm into the next generation of smart meters. This will create a pathway for the wide adoption of DERMS technology because many utilities plan to invest in advanced metering infrastructure in the near future. This will also bridge the gap between an electrical power utility and DERs behind the meter. The DER chip is designed to follow power direction signals from the DERMS coordinator while balancing its local objectives. We tested the chip using a controller- and power-hardware-in-the-loop evaluation under three scenarios that a DERMS could face in the real world. The DER chip was capable of and effective at directing four heterogeneous DERs to respond to a DERMS coordinator for grid services (e.g., voltage regulation and a virtual power plant).

Voltage Control Strategy for Energy Storage System in Sustainable Distribution System Operation

Due to the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) required for the sustainable distribution system, new voltage control strategy is needed by utilities. Traditional voltage control strategy can not support the increasing number of DERs in a coordinated and scalable manner to meet the operational voltage regulation requirement. Supported by the power electronics converter, the energy storage system can provide fast, smooth, and flexible voltage control services. In this paper, an effective and easy to implement sensitivity-based voltage control strategy is developed for the energy storage system. The developed control strategy is validated using an industrial feeder data in Northwest Washington. The proposed strategy can mitigate the voltage unbalance issue, improve the voltage profile, and correct power factors while supporting sustainable distribution system operation.

Scale tests of the new DUNE data pipeline

In preparation for the second runs of the ProtoDUNE detectors at CERN (NP02 and NP04)[1], DUNE has established a new data pipeline for bringing the data from the EHN-1 experimental hall at CERN to primary tape storage at Fermilab and CERN, and then spreading it out to a distributed disk data store at many locations around the world. This system includes a new Ingest Daemon and a new Declaration Daemon. The Rucio[2] replica catalog, and FTS3 transport are used to transport all files. All file metadata is declared to the new MetaCat[3] metadata service. All of these new components have been successfully tested at a scale equal to the expected output of the detector data acquisition system (~2-4 GB/s), and the expected network bandwidth out of the experimental hall. We present the procedure that was used to test and the results of the test.

Impact of Transportation Electrification on the System's Dynamic Frequency Response

Transportation electrification is an integral component of the energy decarbonization transition. This paper investigates the impact of distributed energy resources (DERs), including distributed photovoltaics (DPV) and electric vehicles (EVs), in the primary frequency response of the power grid. Increasing DER adoption poses challenges to maintaining grid frequency stability. However, DERs' ability to provide fast frequency regulation services-primary frequency response (PFR) and secondary frequency response (SFR)-can be exploited to recover the frequency after an N-1 contingency event in the system. This paper also investigates the importance of a droop control strategy through dynamic models of DPV and EV to provide the primary frequency regulation services following the contingency event. A dynamic EV model, based on the PVD1 model Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) introduced, has been used for the simulation. Further, DERs' primary frequency response is studied for five different cases of DER penetration levels after the system is exposed to the generator trip. Additionally, different frequency regulation capacities of EVs are analyzed. The studies show that an increment in DERs capacity providing effective PFR can improve the system frequency nadir and stabilize the frequency faster after the generation trip contingency.

Equitable Transactive Market Design to Coordinate Networked Microgrids with Mixed Ownership

This paper presents an inter-microgrid peer-topeer (P2P) transactive market mechanism to support the coordination of multiple microgrids in a mixed-ownership environment, while enabling prosumers to actively participate in the market to get their own benefits. An equitable P2P transactive energy market is designed, in which the energy burden to customers within microgrids is fairly distributed by leveraging a peer-to-peer communication network among MG owners and the distribution system operator (DSO). To reach the market settlement, a consensus-based distributed optimization algorithm is introduced to enable each MG owner and the DSO to distributedly determine the cleared price which is compensated by a household-income-based discount factor to encourage the energy-burden equity among customers in networked microgrids service territory. Numerical results on the modified 123 node test feeder including 6 microgrids are used to demonstrate the operation of the introduced equitable transactive energy market.

LA100 Equity Strategies. Chapter 10: Household Transportation Electrification

The LA100 Equity Strategies project integrates community guidance with robust research, modeling, and analysis to identify strategy options that can increase equitable outcomes in Los Angeles' clean energy transition. This chapter focuses on residential electric vehicle (EV) incentive programs and multimodal electrified transportation services as means to increase equity in household transportation electrification. Specifically, NREL modeled EV adoption and affordability under business-as-usual and enhanced low-income incentives scenarios and transportation-related energy burdens under multimodal electric travel scenarios, including shared EVs, e-bikes, and improved transit services. Based on our analysis and community guidance, we identified strategies for 1)?increasing equity in new and used light-duty EV adoption and EV charging infrastructure distribution, focused on household used EV ownership and home charging access and 2) affordable, time-efficient, and equitable multimodal electrified transportation options, specifically considering the non-vehicle-owning population. Research was guided by input from the community engagement process, and associated equity strategies are presented in alignment with that guidance.

Risk-informed Hierarchical Control of Behind-the-Meter DERs with AMI Data Integration (Final Technical Report)

This project addresses several key barriers to implement the next generation demand response applications and provides a clear understanding of implementing hierarchical and standalone control using AMI data. Through this program, Eaton has developed and tested a meter-as-a-controller prototype with the help of other partners--- National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Pecan St Inc. (PSI), and Delaware Electric Cooperative (DEC). The controller can utilize residential controllable loads such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioner (HVAC), electric water heater and distributed energy resources like solar PV and battery energy storage systems for off-setting the demand that is required from the grid, thus providing reliable grid-services for demand reduction or peak shaving. The controller is also capable of coordinating the resources of the premises for better management and energy efficiency while meeting the comfort bound of the premises owner as quality-of-service. The development has been demonstrated in a three virtual-home setup at system performance lab of NREL with real appliances (HVAC, electric water heater, solar PV, and battery). The technology has also been proved through laboratory and field demonstration with successful interconnectivity (e.g., end-to-end communication and data exchange) between the residential appliances and utility through the RF network at Delaware Electric Co-op (DEC) in Delaware.

Evaluation of the Simplified Assessment Peak Equivalent Stress Design Limit Probability of Failure

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III Division 5 Subsection HH Subpart A (HHA) outlines requirements and qualification methods for graphite core components in high temperature reactor environments. One such structural qualification method is the Simplified Assessment outlined in HHA-3220, which represents a comparison of service level specific equivalent stresses to allowable stress values derived from target probability of failures (POFs). The target POF is based on the structural reliability class (SRC) for the components and service condition of interest, and is used to establish design limits for combined membrane and peak equivalent stresses. Combined membrane stress limits are derived from two parameter Weibull distribution fits of the graphite grade specific tensile strength data and the target POF. The combined membrane stress limits are then scaled based on the ratio of flexural strength to tensile strength (referred hereinafter as Rtf) to establish the corresponding peak equivalent stress limits. It is desired that the target POF is at least maintained for both combined membrane and peak equivalent design limits, especially with the use of Rtf. The assessment presented herein examines tensile and flexural data for medium and fine grade graphites relative to the calculated combined membrane and peak equivalent stress limits per HHA-3220 and illustrates the simplified assessment method results in anticipated, or at least conservative, peak equivalent design stress limits.

Integration of Microgrids, DER Aggregators, and DERMS with ADMS

Distributed energy resource (DER) management and control is disjointed, siloed, and at times conflicting. Behind-the-meter (BTM) assets can provide significant flexibility but are poorly integrated with the grid. Centralized control methods alone are not scalable. The objective is to develop and demonstrate an architecture that: provides reliable, resilient, and secure grid services; enables scalable, near-real-time management of utility- and small-scale DERs; supports transactive control, aggregation, and direct control of DERs; and incorporates existing utility management systems.

Use of Operating Agreements and Energy Storage to Reduce Photovoltaic Interconnection Costs: Technical and Economic Analysis

This report presents an analytical methodology to identify alternative options to manage interconnection costs and streamline interconnection timelines for distribution system-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems not co-located with load. Specifically, the report details the methodology and results of an analysis that: 1. Identifies potential grid violations that would be induced by a PV system requesting interconnection to a distribution circuit; 2. Identifies multiple technically viable options for mitigating the potential violations, including infrastructure upgrades, downsizing the PV system size, curtailment of PV, and addition of battery energy storage; 3. Defines the required technical operating parameters of the system in order to mitigate all potential violations (the "Operating Envelope"); 4. Compares the economics of each option, from the PV developer's perspective. The analysis supports the ongoing evolution of interconnection standards for combined PV and energy storage systems by providing a methodology to define allowable maximum export limits during each hour. The methodology presented could be used by utilities as part of the interconnection study process, to inform negotiations with DER developers and the drafting of mutually acceptable interconnection agreements. The resulting technical operating parameters could be included as part of the interconnection service agreement (ISA) between the system owner and the utility company. The companion report to this analysis, Gill et al. (2022), details the envisioned framework for the implementation of the technical operating parameters.

Transactive Emergency Power Allocation

The devastating impacts of extreme weather events, many of which are climate-change related, are increasingly evident through the frequency and duration of outages on power grids, especially the distribution systems. One of the major modern-day concerns of utilities is dealing with such extreme supply outages where operators have used rolling blackouts as a contingency plan balance supply and demand while serving critical loads. Such events have significant repercussions social and economic costs. Such blackouts practices are a blunt instrument, depriving customers with low-capacity high-priority loads (i.e. refrigeration, water, telecommunication, etc.) that provide high marginal amenity. Our contribution presented in this work is a transactive emergency allocation mechanism that would provide some minimum level of service to all of the customers while enabling preference-based trading of this initial allocation. This is in contrast to the state-of-art TE mechanisms that allocate resources to customers solely based on their willingness-to-pay. The effectiveness of the proposed mechanism is demonstrated through simulation-based evaluation on a prototypical distribution system experiencing 12-hour scarcity-based emergency event due to extreme operating conditions. Simulation results clearly demonstrate the capability of the proposed transactive emergency allocation mechanism in effectively utilizing the available energy and providing some level of service to all customers to operate their high-priority loads throughout the extreme scarcity event while being economically efficient in allowing trading of allocation based on customer preferences.

MultiLoad-GAN: A GAN-Based Synthetic Load Group Generation Method Considering Spatial-Temporal Correlations

This paper presents a deep-learning framework, Multi-load Generative Adversarial Network (MultiLoad-GAN), for generating a group of synthetic load profiles (SLPs) simultaneously. The main contribution of MultiLoad-GAN is the capture of spatial-temporal correlations among a group of loads that are served by the same distribution transformer. This enables the generation of a large amount of correlated SLPs required for microgrid and distribution system studies. Here, the novelty and uniqueness of the MultiLoad-GAN framework are three-fold. First, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first method for generating a group of load profiles bearing realistic spatial- temporal correlations simultaneously. Second, two complementary realisticness metrics for evaluating generated load profiles are developed: computing statistics based on domain knowledge and comparing high-level features via a deep-learning classifier. Third, to tackle data scarcity, a novel iterative data augmentation mechanism is developed to generate training samples for enhancing the training of both the classifier and the MultiLoad-GAN model. Simulation results show that MultiLoad- GAN can generate more realistic load profiles than existing approaches, especially in group level characteristics. With little finetuning, MultiLoad-GAN can be readily extended to generate a group of load or PV profiles for a feeder or a service area.
