Meteoroid activity on the lunar surface from the Surveyor 3 sample examination.

The Surveyor 3 television camera shroud and polished aluminum tube, retrieved as a result of the Apollo 12 mission after 2.5 years on the lunar surface, were examined for evidence of meteoroid impact. Resulting estimates of the meteoroid flux in the lunar vicinity are shown to be in good agreement with the Lunar Orbiter penetration rates. In addition, the relationship between a derived lunar-surface meteoroid cumulative-flux model and the comparable near-earth model is discussed in the light of theoretical predictions. It is shown that the effect of the gravitational field of the earth on the near-earth environment was greater than previously predicted.

Comparative petrology of Apollo 16 sample 68415 and Apollo 14 samples 14276 and 14310.

Petrographic and electron microprobe studies of Apollo 16 igneous rock 68415 and Apollo 14 rocks 14276 and 14310 show that all three samples differ from the mare basalts and are characterized by plagioclase as the first liquidus phase and by the abundance of plagioclase which is in part cumulate in origin. Major and minor element abundances and isotopic data prohibit the derivation of rocks like any of these samples from one another by magmatic fractionation during their crystallization. They could have originated by partial melting of an old, more Al-rich source material without isotopic equilibration with the residuum, by complete melting of three independent sources, or by contamination with old radiogenic material. The existence of such feldspathic basalts indicates that the generation of Al-rich magmas may have been an important and widespread lunar process.

Apollo 14 - Some geochemical aspects.

Chemical analyses have been obtained for five samples of Apollo 14 regolith fines, three 14230 core samples, 14049 soil clod, 14305 and 14319 breccias, 14310 basalt, and some separated phases. The chemical uniformity of these Apollo 14 samples indicates thorough mixing and/or uniform source rocks. Basalt 14310 can be matched well in composition by a four-to-one mixture of soil and plagioclase. Eu(2+)/Eu(3+) ratios calculated for 14310 pigeonite and plagioclase are similar to those for Apollo 12 and 15 mare-type basalt phases; this indicates similar redox conditions. The investigated Apollo 14 samples are chemically similar to Apollo 12 and 15 KREEP as distinct from Apollo 11, 12, and 15, and Luna 16 mare-type basalts. A relationship between the two types of basalt, in which mare-basalts would represent fused cumulates, is suggested.

Statistical properties of two sine waves in Gaussian noise.

A detailed study is presented of some statistical properties of a stochastic process that consists of the sum of two sine waves of unknown relative phase and a normal process. Since none of the statistics investigated seem to yield a closed-form expression, all the derivations are cast in a form that is particularly suitable for machine computation. Specifically, results are presented for the probability density function (pdf) of the envelope and the instantaneous value, the moments of these distributions, and the relative cumulative density function (cdf).

Development of a high temperature fatigue sensor.

An experimental program was conducted to extend the Tracor Safety Gauge (patent pending) to elevated temperature service. The Safety Gauge is based on a conductive composite device which can be fabricated to function as a fatigue sensor that undergoes an irreversible resistance increase which results from cumulative strain damage. Prototype sensors were developed which appear capable of 1000 deg F operation for short periods of time (approaching one hour); however, bonding difficulties currently limit their use to about 775 deg F. The resistance change of the sensor was generally on the order of 400% or greater as the fatigue life of a titanium alloy (Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) test specimen was approached.

A lunar differentiation model in light of new chemical data on Luna 20 and Apollo 16 soils.

Fines from a Luna 20 soil sample and from three Apollo 16 deep drill core samples have been analyzed for major-minor element abundances by a combined, semi-micro atomic absorption spectrophotometric and colorimetric method. Both the major element and large ion lithophile trace element abundances in these soils, the first from interior highland sites, are greatly influenced by the very high normative plagioclase content, being distinctly richer in Al and Ca, and poorer in K, P, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ti, than most bulk soil samples from previous lunar missions. The relatively large compositional variations in the Apollo 16 core can be ascribed almost entirely to decreasing plagioclase with increasing depth. The chemical composition of the Luna 20 soil indicates less plagioclase and less KREEP than in the Apollo 16 soils. A lunar differentiation model is presented in which is made the suggestion that KREEP is the result of a second fusion event in a lunar crust consisting of early feldspathic cumulates and primary aluminous 'liquid.'

Uranium and thorium in achondrites.

The abundances of U and Th in 19 achondrites and two pallasite olivines have been measured by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. Brecciated eucrites are enriched relative to chondrites in both elements by factors between 10 and 20, perhaps as a result of a magmatic differentiation process. Two unbrecciated eucrites are far less enriched, possibly due to their origin as igneous cumulates. The diogenites Johnstown and Shalka contain approximately chondritic levels of U and Th, but Ellemeet is 10 times lower. The abundances in three howardites are in good agreement with those expected from major element data for a mixing model with eucrite and diogenite end members. The high O-18 basaltic achondrites Nakhla, Shergotty and Angra dos Reis have a range of U and Th abundances similar to the brecciated eucrites and howardites, but have systematically higher Th/U ratios.

Fatigue-test acceleration with flight-by-flight loading and heating to simulate supersonic-transport operation

Possibilities for reducing fatigue-test time for supersonic-transport materials and structures were studied in tests with simulated flight-by-flight loading. In order to determine whether short-time tests were feasible, the results of accelerated tests (2 sec per flight) were compared with the results of real-time tests (96 min per flight). The effects of design mean stress, the stress range for ground-air-ground cycles, simulated thermal stress, the number of stress cycles in each flight, and salt corrosion were studied. The flight-by-flight stress sequences were applied to notched sheet specimens of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloys. A linear cumulative-damage analysis accounted for large changes in stress range of the simulated flights but did not account for the differences between real-time and accelerated tests. The fatigue lives from accelerated tests were generally within a factor of two of the lives from real-time tests; thus, within the scope of the investigation, accelerated testing seems feasible.

An experimental study of the temporal statistics of radio signals scattered by rain

A fixed-beam bistatic CW experiment designed to measure the temporal statistics of the volume reflectivity produced by hydrometeors at several selected altitudes, scattering angles, and at two frequencies (3.6 and 7.8 GHz) is described. Surface rain gauge data, local meteorological data, surveillance S-band radar, and great-circle path propagation measurements were also made to describe the general weather and propagation conditions and to distinguish precipitation scatter signals from those caused by ducting and other nonhydrometeor scatter mechanisms. The data analysis procedures were designed to provide an assessment of a one-year sample of data with a time resolution of one minute. The cumulative distributions of the bistatic signals for all of the rainy minutes during this period are presented for the several path geometries.

A unified technology plan for fatigue and fracture design

An integrated research program is proposed that seeks to improve the technology of designing against fatigue and fracture and to develop a computerized capability for assessing the adequacy of a given design. Both fatigue life prediction and damage tolerance considerations are incorporated. The research for each of these considerations is organized to account for material behavior, the effect of structural configurations, the cumulative effects of the operating loadings, and for the effects of environment - temperature and corrosion. The goal is to achieve a viable fatigue and fracture design procedure for any practical problem. The overall program is outlined, assessments are made of the state of the art, subgoals are proposed, and means for achieving them are suggested.

Transparent sound screens

Transparent sound screens consisting of glass (organic glass) plates placed at fixed angles with respect to the floor are considered. Noise levels in the screened area depend on the cumulative effect of direct, reverberated and refracted components of sound energy radiated by the source. This effect is analyzed on the analogy of the summation of electrical impedances. Inasmuch as under given circumstances sufficient noise control can be obtained, transparent screens seem to solve the problem of unimpeded supervision of installations in noisy workshops and power plants; in administrative buildings, computing centers, design bureaus, etc., they ensure acoustic comfort without space losses and without inspiring claustrophobia.

Estimation for bilinear stochastic systems

Three techniques for the solution of bilinear estimation problems are presented. First, finite dimensional optimal nonlinear estimators are presented for certain bilinear systems evolving on solvable and nilpotent lie groups. Then the use of harmonic analysis for estimation problems evolving on spheres and other compact manifolds is investigated. Finally, an approximate estimation technique utilizing cumulants is discussed.

Television studies of faint meteors

Low-light-level television systems have shown considerable promise in the optical extension of meteor flux measurements to faint magnitudes. In particular, the secondary electron conduction vidicon has demonstrated its ability to detect fast, faint meteors. Such a system has been calibrated and used to obtain the cumulative flux of meteors above threshold masses of .1 to .001 gram. The results indicate a basic continuity with photographic and satellite measurements. The observed data were further analyzed for diurnal and directional effects.-
