Vibrations of three-dimensional pipe systems with acoustic coupling

A general algorithm is developed to calculate the beam-type dynamic response of three dimensional multiplane finite length pipe systems, consisting of elbow and straight ducts with continuous interfaces. Emphasis is on secondary acoustic wave effects giving rise to coupling mechanisms; and the simulation accounts for one-dimensional elastoacoustic coupling from a plane acoustic wave and secondary loads resulting from wave asymmetries. The transfer matrix approach is adopted in modeling the elastodynamics of each duct, with allowance for distribution loads. Secondary loads from plane wave distortion are considered with a solution of the Helmholtz equation in an equivalent rigid waveguide, and effects of path imperfection are introduced as a perturbation from the hypothetical perfectly straight pipe. Computations indicate that the one-dimensional acoustic assumption is valid for frequencies below one-half the first cut-off frequency, and the three-dimensional acoustic effects produce an increase in response levels near and above cut-off.

Mesoscale aspects of jet streak coupling and implications for the short term forecasting of severe convective storms

An analysis of a tornado outbreak in Wichita Falls, Texas was analyzed. The coupling of upper and lower tropospheric jet streaks, leading to severe storm outbreaks is illustrated. The high resolution SESAME data sets indicate that mass and momentum adjustments which couple upper and lower tropospheric jets occur within a 3 to 6 hr time frame over a 100 to 500 km domain, and establish the role of isallobaric forcing in the storm development. It is suggested that the output rate of data from the existing 12 hr network be increased to provide better temporal resolution of wind, mass and moisture data.

User's guide for the computer code COLTS for calculating the coupled laminar and turbulent flow over a Jovian entry probe

A user's guide for a computer code 'COLTS' (Coupled Laminar and Turbulent Solutions) is provided which calculates the laminar and turbulent hypersonic flows with radiation and coupled ablation injection past a Jovian entry probe. Time-dependent viscous-shock-layer equations are used to describe the flow field. These equations are solved by an explicit, two-step, time-asymptotic finite-difference method. Eddy viscosity in the turbulent flow is approximated by a two-layer model. In all, 19 chemical species are used to describe the injection of carbon-phenolic ablator in the hydrogen-helium gas mixture. The equilibrium composition of the mixture is determined by a free-energy minimization technique. A detailed frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient for various species is considered to obtain the radiative flux. The code is written for a CDC-CYBER-203 computer and is capable of providing solutions for ablated probe shapes also.

Susceptibility of symmetric structures to nonlinear torsional coupling

The susceptibility to induced torsional response of symmetric building structures with nonliner resisting elements was investigated. Stability curves show the effect of the arrangement of the load resisting elements on induced torsional coupling in these nonliner but other wise symmetric structures. Universal upper and lower bound instability curves are also derived; these identify the susceptibility to torsional coupling of symmetric structures with different stiffness arrangements but which have equal mass and total lateral stiffness, and which are intended to model alternative structural strategies for lateral load resistance.

Conditioned feeding suppression in rats produced by cross-coupled and simple motions

Results are presented of an experiment on the induction of motion sickness in rats by the use of cross-coupled accelerations of magnitudes similar to those used in human experiments. Accelerations were produced in a seesaw apparatus with rotating disks supporting the animal cages mounted on each seesaw arm, and motion sickness was assessed according to the consumption of a sweet food previously offered to the animals immediately before the motion treatment. During a 1-hour test session 72 h after motion treatment and after a 24-h fast, rats having undergone cross-coupled vertical sinusoidal and rotational motion are observed to consume less food than those having experienced either type of motion alone, or no motion. The ordering of the conditioned suppressive feeding effects is consistent with the amounts of vestibular stimulation produced by the respective motions. The results support the existence of motion sickness effects in rats, even though they are unable to vomit.

Intensified charge coupled devices for use as a spaceborne spectrographic image-plane detector system

An instrument that has been developed for studies of atmospheric emissions from the Space Shuttle comprises an array of imaging spectrometers to observe features over the 300-12,000-A wavelength range. Each spectrometer has a 2-D image-plane detector system on which spectral information is dispersed in one direction and spatial information is resolved in the other. The detectors consist of CCD arrays which are coupled to proximity focused image intensifiers. The intensifier in each case is selected for the wavelength range covered by the particular spectrometer. The result is a compact low-power spectrographic detector system. In the course of building the five flight detector systems, there was occasion to evaluate a larger number of the charge coupled devices and the proximity focused image intensifiers. Various characteristics, advantages, and shortcomings of these devices and the overall intensified CCD system are reported.

Coupled rotor/airframe vibration analysis

A coupled rotor/airframe vibration analysis developed as a design tool for predicting helicopter vibrations and a research tool to quantify the effects of structural properties, aerodynamic interactions, and vibration reduction devices on vehicle vibration levels is described. The analysis consists of a base program utilizing an impedance matching technique to represent the coupled rotor/airframe dynamics of the system supported by inputs from several external programs supplying sophisticated rotor and airframe aerodynamic and structural dynamic representation. The theoretical background, computer program capabilities and limited correlation results are presented in this report. Correlation results using scale model wind tunnel results show that the analysis can adequately predict trends of vibration variations with airspeed and higher harmonic control effects. Predictions of absolute values of vibration levels were found to be very sensitive to modal characteristics and results were not representative of measured values.

Measurement and analysis of periodic coupling in silicon-clad planar waveguides

Computer modeling studies indicate that planar dielectric waveguides clad with silicon exhibit a damped periodic oscillation in their attenuation and phase characteristics. The effect is due to a periodic coupling between the lossy, guided modes in the silicon film and the TE0 mode of the dielectric waveguide. Experimental confirmation of the periodic coupling for a wavelength of 632.8 nm is presented. Propagation characteristics for a wavelength of 1150 nm were investigated for application in integrated optical modulators. Frequency filtering properties of silicon-clad waveguides are also examined and it is shown that the silicon thickness controls the filter response curve.

Input impedance and mutual coupling of rectangular microstrip antennas

A moment method solution to the problem of input impedance and mutual coupling of rectangular microstrip antenna elements is presented. The formulation uses the grounded dielectric slab Green's function to account rigorously for the presence of the substrate and surface waves. Both entire basis (EB) and piecewise sinusoidal (PWS) expansion modes are used, and their relative advantages are noted. Calculations of input impedance and mutual coupling are compared with measured data and other calculations.

A coupled ice-ocean model of upwelling in the marginal ice zone

A dynamical coupled ice-ocean numerical model for the marginal ice zone (MIZ) is suggested and used to study upwelling dynamics in the MIZ. The nonlinear sea ice model has a variable ice concentration and includes internal ice stress. The model is forced by stresses on the air/ocean and air/ice surfaces. The main coupling between the ice and the ocean is in the form of an interfacial stress on the ice/ocean interface. The ocean model is a linear reduced gravity model. The wind stress exerted by the atmosphere on the ocean is proportional to the fraction of open water, while the interfacial stress ice/ocean is proportional to the concentration of ice. A new mechanism for ice edge upwelling is suggested based on a geostrophic equilibrium solution for the sea ice medium. The upwelling reported in previous models invoking a stationary ice cover is shown to be replaced by a weak downwelling due to the ice motion. Most of the upwelling dynamics can be understood by analysis of the divergence of the across ice edge upper ocean transport. On the basis of numerical model, an analytical model is suggested that reproduces most of the upwelling dynamics of the more complex numerical model.

Wedge coupling of lasers into multimode fibers

Design and experimental data for obtuse-angled wedges used in coupled configurations of diode lasers and multimode fibers are presented. An analytic definition of the connection between the wedge angle and the fiber acceptance half-angle is developed, along with a formula for the minimum half-angle. An inequality is defined for determining the bevel angle of the output end of the fiber to eliminate end reflections. The fiber parameters are accounted for in the bevel. The formulations were tested in comparison with the performance of a coupled CDH laser system and good agreement was found in the output spectrum.

Structural dynamics studies of rotating bladed-disk assemblies coupled with flexible shaft motions

In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of the first stage compressor/fan of the 'E3' turbofan engine, a classical structural dynamics approach is employed to couple the motions of a flexible bladed disk to a rotating flexible shaft. The analysis accounts for flexible disk displacements which are transverse to the plane of rotation, and radial as well as tangential, and also accounts for rigid disk translations along, and rotations about, axes normal to the undeformed shaft axes. In the case of a wide range of E3 engine shaft flexibilities and speeds, some of the one-diametral node frequencies are shown to be affected by shaft degrees of freedom whose stiffness values are in general range of design practice. Coriolis forces are also found to significantly affect natural frequencies where strong coupling between certain modes is present.
