Integrated, Coordinated, Open, and Networked (ICON) Science to Advance the Geosciences: Introduction and Synthesis of a Special Collection of Commentary Articles

The sciences struggle with poor integration across disciplines, the absence of coordination within and across data generation and modeling activities, scarce or disconnected open data, and weaknesses of networks to engage diverse stakeholders within and beyond the scientific community. The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is divided into 25 sections intended to encompass the breadth of the geosciences. Here, we introduce a special collection of commentary articles spanning 19 AGU sections on the challenges and opportunities associated with the use of ICON science principles. These principles focus on research intentionally designed to be Integrated, Coordinated, Open, and Networked (ICON) with the goal of maximizing mutual benefit (among stakeholders) and cross-system transferability of science outcomes. This article summarizes the ICON principles; discusses the crowdsourced approach to creating the collection; and explores insights from across the articles. There were multiple common themes among the commentary articles, including the broad agreement that the benefits of using ICON principles outweigh the costs, but that using ICON principles has important risks that need to be understood and mitigated. It was also clear that the ICON principles are not monolithic or static, but should instead be considered a heuristic tool that can and should be modified to meet changing needs. As a whole, the collection is intended as a resource for scientists pursuing ICON science and represents an important inflection point in which the geosciences community has come together around ICON principles as a unified approach for improving how science is done across the geosciences and beyond.

Regulatory Coordination of Photophysical, Photochemical, and Biochemical Reactions in the Photosynthesis of Land Plants

Balance among the sequential photophysical, photochemical, and biochemical reactions of photosynthesis is needed for converting fleeting energy in light to stable energy in chemical bonds. Any imbalance acts as either a bottleneck for limiting photosynthetic efficiency or an agent for inducing structural and functional damage to photosynthetic apparatus. Not only must each reaction be carefully regulated, but regulatory processes must also be coordinated across the reactions. However, regulations of different stages of photosynthesis have rarely been studied jointly. Non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and stomatal conductance (g s ) are key regulators of photophysical and biochemical reactions, respectively. Existing evidence suggests that the redox state of plastoquinone regulates g s and that the photochemical reactions are partially regulated by the ultrastructural dynamics of thylakoids induced by osmotic water fluxes in chloroplasts of land plants. To examine how these regulations are coordinated and feedback to each other, we simultaneously measured NPQ and gs and inferred the redox state of plastoquinone and the light-induced thylakoid swelling/shrinking on numerous C 3 and C 4 species. For all species measured, NPQ and gs covary with the redox states of the electron transport chain, particularly plastoquinone, and increase as thylakoid swelling is inferred. NPQ has the maximal sensitivity at the light intensity at which thylakoid is inferred to be fully swollen. Our findings suggest that plant energy and water use strategies are intimately linked by evolution, and studying the regulations of different photosynthetic stages as a whole can lead to new insights of the functioning of photosynthetic machinery in dynamic environments.

Heisenberg spin chain as a worldsheet coordinate for lightcone quantized string

Although the energy spectrum of the Heisenberg spin chain on a circle defined by H = 1 4 Σ k = 1 M σ k x σ k + 1 x + σ k y σ k + 1 y + Δ σ k z σ k + 1 z is well known for any fixed M, the boundary conditions vary according to whether Mϵ 4N + r, where r = -1,0,1,2, and also according to the parity of the number of overturned spins in the state, In string theory all these cases must be allowed because interactions involve a string with M spins breaking into strings with M 1 < M and M - M 1 spins (or vice versa). We organize the energy spectrum and degeneracies of H in the case Δ = 0 where the system is equivalent to a system of free fermions. In spite of the multiplicity of special cases, in the limit M → ∞ the spectrum is that of a free compactified worldsheet field. Such a field can be interpreted as a compact transverse string coordinate x(σ) ≡ x(σ) + R 0 . We construct the bosonization formulas explicitly in all separate cases, and for each sector give the Virasoro conformal generators in both fermionic and bosonic formulations. Furthermore from calculations in the literature for selected classes of excited states, there is strong evidence that the only change for Δ ≠ 0 is a change in the compactification radius R 0 → R Δ . As Δ→ -1 this radius goes to infinity, giving a concrete example of noncompact space emerging from a discrete dynamical system. Finally we apply our work to construct the three string vertex implied by a string whose bosonic coordinates emerge from this mechanism.

Cadmium(II) terephthalates based on trinuclear units {Cd_3(bdc)_3}: control of coordination structure dimensionality and luminescence properties

Two metal-organic coordination polymers based on cadmium(II) ions and terephthalic (1,4-benzenedicarboxylic) acid were synthesized in dimethylformamide or a mixture of dimethylformamide and methanol: [Cd{sub 3}(bdc){sub 3}(dmf){sub 4}] (1, bdc is 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, dmf is N,N´-dimethylformamide) and [Cd{sub 3}(bdc){sub 3}(dmf){sub 2}] (2), respectively. According to the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, both compounds are built up by the trinuclear carboxylate units {Cd_3(O_2CR)_6}. Compound 1 has a layered structure, whereas compound 2 has a three-dimensional structure due to the presence of additional coordination interactions between adjacent trinuclear units and the formation of polymer chains {Cd_3(dmf)_2(μ_2-O_2CR-κ"1,κ"1)_2(μ_2-O_2CR-κ"2,κ"1)_4(O_2CR-κ"1)2}. The synthesized compounds were characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and powder X-ray diffrac- tion. The luminescence properties of these compounds provide evidence for the existence of both intraligand and charge-transfer transitions. The luminescence quantum yields for both compounds are 10%.

Bimetallic coordination compounds with 5,6-bis(salicylideneimino)-1,10-phenanthroline: quantum chemical study of spin transitions

A quantum chemical study of the structure, energy, and magnetic characteristics of di nuclear heterometallic complexes constructed via coordination of 5,6-bis(salicylideneimino)-1,10-phenanthroline to the cobalt(II) or copper(II) ions (by the azomethine moiety) and to the iron(II) ion (by the phenanthroline moiety) is carried out using the density functional theory at the DFT UTPSSh/6-311++G(d,p) level. It was shown that all the considered compounds can exhibit thermally-controlled spin-crossover at the iron center. Coordination of the pyridine molecule the cobalt ion induces spin transitions. The predicted magnetic properties of the studied systems suggest that they can be used as prototypes for the design of molecular electronic devices.

Intramolecular Halogen Atom Coordinated H Transfer via Ion-Neutral Complex in the Gas Phase Dissociation of Protonated Dichlorvos Derivatives

Intramolecular halogen atom coordinated H transfer reaction in the gas phase dissociation of protonated dichlorvos derivatives has been explored by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Upon collisional activation, protonated dichlorvos underwent dissociation reaction via cleavage of the P–O bond to give reactive ion-neutral complex (INC) intermediate, [dimethoxylphosphinoylium + dichloroacetaldehyde]. Besides direct dissociation of the complex, intramolecular chlorine atom coordinated H transfer reaction within the complex takes place, leading to the formation of protonated dimethyl chlorophosphate. To investigate the fragmentation mechanism, deuterium-labeled experiments and several other halogen-substituted (Br and F) analogs of dichlorvos were prepared and evaluated, which display a similar intramolecular halogen transfer. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations were performed and the computational results also support the mechanism. .

Topological Characterization of Coordination-Driven Self-assembly Complexes: Applications of Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry

Coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA) is increasingly used to synthesize coordination complexes containing metal-centered electron acceptors and typically nitrogen-containing electron donors. Characterization of the structures obtained from CDSA via crystallographic or spectroscopic means is limited due to difficulties in forming single crystals for X-ray studies and overlapping precursor and product signals in NMR. Here, we employ ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS), which provides a direct measure of size and shape of the CDSA complexes, to study the intact reaction products of a rhomboid-shaped complex. This approach negates the need for product isolation and crystallization and allows for tracking of the product distribution as a function of time. A potential challenge of IM-MS is that the size/shape of the observed CDSA complexes can vary with internal energy; however, we show that proper tuning of the instrument reduces the effects of collisional activation thereby allowing for retention of ion conformations that reflect solution-phase ion structures. .

Evolutionary computation algorithms to coordinating order acceptance and batch delivery for an integrated supply chain scheduling

This paper proposes a novel approach of coordinating decisions in an integrated supply chain (ISC): coordinating order acceptance (OA) and batch delivery (BD) due to round trip transportation (RTT) and using third-party logistics (3PL) vehicles. The paper aims at trading off among accepted orders revenue, delivery costs as well as any penalties incurred in the ISC to maximize the total benefit. A novel mixed-integer programming is proposed for the problem. In addition, the paper provides a heuristic to form batches and develops a hybrid evolutionary computation algorithms based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the problem. An information sharing mechanism is improved and applied. To explore and to locate the proposed PSO in a better neighborhood, a local search is proposed. Taguchi experimental design is utilized to set the appropriate values of the algorithms’ parameters and random instances are generated to evaluate the performance of the algorithms. The paper investigates the profitability sensitivity of the problem to parameters and analyzes the effect of the changes in the parameters on the performance of our proposed algorithms. The attained results show the appropriate performance of our algorithms.

60 years of science in ICF: from conception to scientific breakeven on the National Ignition Facility

The recent achievements of a burning plasma, fusion ignition, and scientific energy gain with deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) represents a major milestone in the development of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and all of fusion research. In these experiments, fuel pressures well in excess of hundreds of GBars were achieved in the compressed fuel, and robust alpha heating of the fuel, far in excess of the energy provided by the implosion, were demonstrated for the first time. These achievements occurred 60 years after the inception of ICF and the first laser demonstration, and were made possible by more than five decades of research at laser facilities around the world. Advances in laser technology both in wavelength and precision, motivated by improved understanding of laser-plasma interaction physics and the demands of targets; improvements in target fabrication inspired by the need to control and minimize hydrodynamic instabilities in the implosion; and multi-dimensional simulations and diagnostics have been critical to this achievement. This paper will summarize the scientific and technical advances, the surprises, and the challenges that had to be overcome to achieve these goals.

Long noncoding RNA HOTTIP cooperates with CCCTC-binding factor to coordinate HOXA gene expression

Highlights: • HOTTIP is required for activation of distal HOXA genes but its role is restricted by CTCF boundary. • HOTTIP and CTCF coordinate to specify the pattern of histone modifications on HOXA genes in foreskin fibroblasts. • HOTTIP RNA acts as a new interaction partner of CTCF. The spatiotemporal control of HOX gene expression is dependent on positional identity and often correlated to their genomic location within each loci. Maintenance of HOX expression patterns is under complex transcriptional and epigenetic regulation, which is not well understood. Here we demonstrate that HOTTIP, a lincRNA transcribed from the 5′ edge of the HOXA locus, physically associates with the CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) that serves as an insulator by organizing HOXA cluster into disjoint domains, to cooperatively maintain the chromatin modifications of HOXA genes and thus coordinate the transcriptional activation of distal HOXA genes in human foreskin fibroblasts. Our results reveal the functional connection of HOTTIP and CTCF, and shed light on lincRNAs in gene activation and CTCF mediated chromatin organization.

An integrated in-situ coordination strategy enabling high-performance layered cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

O3-type layered transition metal oxide cathodes hold tremendous potential in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their low cost and high energy density. However, the structure instability associated with detrimental phase transitions and severe interface parasitic reactions exacerbate the material's electrochemical performance degradation. Herein, we develop an integrated in-situ coordination strategy via heteroatomic modulation inducing coherent epitaxial layer to collaboratively enhance the overall framework robustness from surface to bulk. The theoretical calculation and multiple in/ex-situ characterizations demonstrate the charge density around oxygen is redistributed, which promotes the electron localization, thus widening the NaO 2 lattice space and accelerating the Na + transport dynamics. Furthermore, the formed strengthened oxygen bond energy effectively distributes the long-range coordination of Mn 3+ O 6 octahedron, thereby alleviating Jahn-Teller distortion and local stress. Importantly, the in-situ formed conformal buffer layer dramatically relieves the adverse interface side reactions, facilitating the construction of robust cathode-electrolyte interface, which ameliorate the whole structure stability of designed materials. Consequently, the optimized NFMZ@NZO-1.0 exhibits the excellent cycling stability with 80.2% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1C, and delivers a high discharge capacity of 107.1 mAh g −1 at 10C. In conclusion, this distinctive coupling strategy provides valuable insights for developing high-performance layered cathode materials in SIBs.

A GPU accelerated mixed-precision Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics framework with cell-based relative coordinates

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is essential for modeling complex large-deformation problems across various applications, requiring significant computational power. A major portion of SPH computation time is dedicated to the Nearest Neighboring Particle Search (NNPS) process. While advanced NNPS algorithms have been developed to enhance SPH efficiency, the potential efficiency gains from modern computation hardware remain underexplored. Here, this study investigates the impact of GPU parallel architecture, low-precision computing on GPUs, and GPU memory management on NNPS efficiency. Our approach employs a GPU-accelerated mixed-precision SPH framework, utilizing low precision float-point 16 (FP16) for NNPS while maintaining high precision for other components. To ensure FP16 accuracy in NNPS, we introduce a Relative Coordinated-based Link List (RCLL) algorithm, storing FP16 relative coordinates of particles within background cells. Our testing results show three significant speedup rounds for CPU-based NNPS algorithms. The first comes from parallel GPU computations, with up to a 1000x efficiency gain. The second is achieved through low-precision GPU computing, where the proposed FP16-based RCLL algorithm offers a 1.5x efficiency improvement over the FP64-based approach on GPUs. By optimizing GPU memory bandwidth utilization, the efficiency of the FP16 RCLL algorithm can be further boosted by 2.7x, as demonstrated in an example with 1 million particles. Our code is released at https://github.com/pnnl/lpNNPS4SPH.

Coordinated frequency regulation among asynchronous AC grids with an MTDC system

With the increasing penetration level of renewable power, the power systems’ inertias are decreasing. To ensure that the frequency is above the threshold of the under frequency load shedding, one effective way is to share the spinning reserves among asynchronous AC grids through HVDC systems. In this paper, a coordinated frequency regulation scheme that enables spinning reserves sharing is proposed for such hybrid AC/DC grids. This scheme is a communication-free method that consists of the droop control, the inertia emulation control and the frequency safety control. The combined response of the three controls can increase not only the frequency nadir but also the settled frequency of the disturbed grid. In addition, the hysteresis comparators and the power injection limits are adopted in the frequency regulation scheme to reduce the coupling effect among AC grids. Thus, under small and harmless disturbance, the frequency regulation scheme will be inactive; the disturbance in strong AC grids would not affect the weak AC systems. The frequency regulation scheme coordinates well with the automatic generation control of the grids. Furthermore, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed frequency regulation scheme are verified through simulation studies.

Nonflammable Lithium Metal Full Cells with Ultra-high Energy Density Based on Coordinated Carbonate Electrolytes

Coupling thin Li metal anodes with high-capacity/high-voltage cathodes such as LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) is a promising way to increase lithium battery energy density. Yet, the realization of high-performance full cells remains a formidable challenge. Here, we demonstrate a new class of highly coordinated, nonflammable carbonate electrolytes based on lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in propylene carbonate/fluoroethylene carbonate mixtures. Utilizing an optimal salt concentration (4 M LiFSI) of the electrolyte results in a unique coordination structure of Li + -FSI - -solvent cluster, which is critical for enabling the formation of stable interfaces on both the thin Li metal anode and high-voltage NCM811 cathode. Under highly demanding cell configuration and operating conditions (Li metal anode = 35 μm, areal capacity/charge voltage of NCM811 cathode = 4.8 mAh cm -2 /4.6 V, and anode excess capacity [relative to the cathode] = 0.83), the Li metal-based full cell provides exceptional electrochemical performance (energy densities = 679 Wh kg cell -1 /1,024 Wh L cell -1 ) coupled with nonflammability.

Developing multifunctional nanoparticles in a 1-D coordination polymer of Cd(II)

A simple synthesis for the integration of different nanoparticles (NPs) including Ag, Au, Pd, Cr and mixed (Cu/Fe), has been demonstrated within the nanopores of a non-activated one dimensional porous coordination polymer (PCP) of Cd(II) due to its high flexible structure. There are two different mechanisms (acid formation (HCl/HNO{sub 3}) and redox activity of the framework) elucidated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Presence of –NO{sub 2} groups of the ligand act as anchoring sites for metal ions of metal precursors leading to NPs growth within the PCP explained by FTIR. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images provided insight of the chemical and physical characteristics of the NPs within the framework. Ag/AgO NPs exhibit excellent antibacterial properties at extremely low concentrations. The polymer shows potential for sequestration and reduction of hexavalent Cr (highly toxic) to elemental, trivalent and tetravalent Cr (non toxic). This framework is also an excellent template for fabrication and dry storage of nanoparticles synthesized by mixed metal precursors. Ferromagnetic properties have been shown by Ag and Au NPs integrated frameworks while Cu/Fe@Cd-PCP behaves as a paramagnet material at room temperature. - Graphical abstract: Different types of nanoparticles have been synthesized by utilizing a 1D porous coordination polymer of Cd(II) in its as-synthesized state at RT and without use of any reducing agent.
