Decoding of B.C.H. and R.S. codes with errors and erasures using continued fractions

Through the use of continuing fractions, a simplified algorithm for decoding B.C.H. and R.S. codes is developed that corrects both erasures and errors on a finite field GF(q to the m). It is noted that the decoding method is a modification of the Forney-Belekamp technique. Finally, it is believed that the present scheme is both simpler to understand and to implement than more conventional algorithms.

Analysis of solidification interface shape during continuous casting of a slab

An analysis was made of the two-dimensional interface shape of a slab ingot being cast continuously by withdrawing it from a mold. The sides of the ingot are being cooled and the upper boundary of the ingot is in contact with a pool of molten metal. The solidification interface shape was determined from the analysis of the heat flow, utilizing the condition that the solidification interface is at constant temperature and must be normal to the lines of heat flow carrying away latent heat of fusion from the interface. The analysis includes the effect of interface curvature which, for a constant rate of withdrawing the cast ingot from the mold, causes the solidification to be nonuniform along the interface. The analysis was carried out by a conformal mapping procedure.

Continuous control of phase-locked-loop bandwidth

Tracking loop filter with continuous bandwidth control smooths transition from wide to narrow band. Circuit was designed for Space Shuttle where bandwidth varied between 320 Hz for acquisition and 20 Hz for tracking. Field-effect transitor (FET) acts as voltage controlled variable resistance, changing time constant of filter between phase detector and voltage-controlled oscillator in phase-locked loop.

Investigation of high frequency oscillations in the OV102 elevon actuation subsystems using continuous system modeling program simulation

Two theories emerged as the cause of undesired oscillations at frequencies between 40 and 60 Hz in the Orbiter Vehicle inboard and outboard elevon actuation subsystems during hardware testing. Both the "hardover feedback" and "deadspace" theories were examined using continuous system modeling program simulation. Results did not support the "hardover feedback" theory but showed that deadspace in the torque feedback spring connections to the servospools must be considered to be a possible cause of the oscillations. Further investigation is recommended.

Continued study of NAVSTAR/GPS for general aviation

A conceptual approach for examining the full potential of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for the general aviation community is presented. Aspects of an experimental program to demonstrate these concepts are discussed. The report concludes with the observation that the true potential of GPS can only be exploited by utilization in concert with a data link. The capability afforded by the combination of position location and reporting stimulates the concept of GPS providing the auxiliary functions of collision avoidance, and approach and landing guidance. A series of general recommendations for future NASA and civil community efforts in order to continue to support GPS for general aviation are included.

On the continuing stellar formation in the central regions of some globular clusters and their relation to the pulsars

The discrepancy between the predicted and observed quantities of gas in the central regions of massive globular clusters is discussed. It is hypothesized that star formation continues in the central regions by means of gas released during stellar evolution or trapped by the central region when the globular clusters pass through the center of the galaxy. Nine globular clusters are indicated at distances less than 1000 ps from which radio pulsars or X-ray sources are observed. It is argued that they could have formed relatively recently in closed pairs in the central regions and then ejected at the stage of supernova bursts with velocities over 100 ks/s.

Velocity servo for continuous scan Fourier interference spectrometer

A velocity servo for continuous scan Fourier interference spectrometer of the double pass retroreflector type having two cat's eye retroreflectors is described. The servo uses an open loop, lead screw drive system for one retroreflector with compensation for any variations in speed of drive of the lead screw provided by sensing any variation in the rate of reference laser fringes, and producing an error signal from such variation used to compensate by energizing a moving coil actuator for the other retroreflector optical path, and energizing (through a highpass filter) piezoelectric actuators for the secondary mirrors of the retroreflectors.

Collective plasma effects associated with the continuous injection model of solar flare particle streams

A modified continuous injection model for impulsive solar flares that includes self-consistent plasma nonlinearities based on the concept of marginal stability is presented. A quasi-stationary state is established, composed of a hot truncated electron Maxwellian distribution confined by acoustic turbulence on the top of the loop and energetic electron beams precipitating in the chromosphere. It is shown that the radiation properties of the model are in accordance with observations.

Finite-state compensators for continuous process

A mathematical representation of feedback systems composed of both continuous and finite-state processes is discussed. This representation provides a new viewpoint for the design of computer control systems for industrial processes, and clarifies areas in which further research is required. Some examples are given depicting the stabilization of an unstable lag by a D-type flip flop.

Experience in the control of a continuous flow cyrogenic tunnel

The concept of using liquid nitrogen to cool the test gas of a wind tunnel to cryogenic temperatures lead to the achievement of very high Reynolds number flows in relatively small transonic tunnels. The economical operation of liquid nitrogen cooled cryogenic tunnels is critically dependent on fast and accurate control of the tunnel variables. The control problem of a continuous flow fan driven cryogenic tunnel was addressed, first by developing a lumped multivariable mathematical model of a tunnel and validating the model by reconciling the responses of the Langley 0.3 m transonic cryogenic tunnel to the responses of the mathematical model on a simulator. Finally, the development of laws for the closed loop control of the tunnel pressure and temperature and the successful implementation of a control system for the 0.3 m transonic cryogenic tunnel based on these laws are presented.

Continuous flow electrophoresis: The effect of sample concentration on throughput and resolution in an upward flowing system

The effect of sample concentration on throughput and resolution in a modified continuous particle electrophoresis (CPE) system with flow in an upward direction is investigated. Maximum resolution is achieved at concentrations ranging from 2 x 10 to the 8th power cells/ml to 8 x 10 to the 8th power cells/ml. The widest peak separation is at 2 x 10 to the 8th power cells/ml; however, the sharpest peaks and least overlap between cell populations is at 8 x 10 to the 8th power cells/ml. Apparently as a result of improved electrophoresis cell performance due to coasting the chamber with bovine serum albumin, changing the electrode membranes and rinse, and lowering buffer temperatures, sedimentation effects attending to higher concentrations are diminished. Throughput as measured by recovery of fixed cells is diminished at the concentrations judged most likely to yield satisfactory resolution. The tradeoff appears to be improved recovery/throughput at the expense of resolution.

Design studies of continuously variable transmissions for electric vehicles

Preliminary design studies were performed on four continuously variable transmission (CVT) concepts for use with a flywheel equipped electric vehicle of 1700 kg gross weight. Requirements of the CVT's were a maximum torque of 450 N-m (330 lb-ft), a maximum output power of 75 kW (100 hp), and a flywheel speed range of 28,000 to 14,000 rpm. Efficiency, size, weight, cost, reliability, maintainability, and controls were evaluated for each of the four concepts which included a steel V-belt type, a flat rubber belt type, a toroidal traction type, and a cone roller traction type. All CVT's exhibited relatively high calculated efficiencies (68 percent to 97 percent) over a broad range of vehicle operating conditions. Estimated weight and size of these transmissions were comparable to or less than equivalent automatic transmission. The design of each concept was carried through the design layout stage.

Continued research on selected parameters to minimize community annoyance from airplane noise

Results from continued research on selected parameters to minimize community annoyance from airport noise are reported. First, a review of the initial work on this problem is presented. Then the research focus is expanded by considering multiobjective optimization approaches for this problem. A multiobjective optimization algorithm review from the open literature is presented. This is followed by the multiobjective mathematical formulation for the problem of interest. A discussion of the appropriate solution algorithm for the multiobjective formulation is conducted. Alternate formulations and associated solution algorithms are discussed and evaluated for this airport noise problem. Selected solution algorithms that have been implemented are then used to produce computational results for example airports. These computations involved finding the optimal operating scenario for a moderate size airport and a series of sensitivity analyses for a smaller example airport.

A computer program for estimating the power-density spectrum of advanced continuous simulation language generated time histories

A computer program for performing frequency analysis of time history data is presented. The program uses circular convolution and the fast Fourier transform to calculate power density spectrum (PDS) of time history data. The program interfaces with the advanced continuous simulation language (ACSL) so that a frequency analysis may be performed on ACSL generated simulation variables. An example of the calculation of the PDS of a Van de Pol oscillator is presented.
