Compatibility Of Steels At 450°-650°C In Supercritical CO2 With O2 And H2O Additions

Direct-fired supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power cycles are being commercialized to revolutionize fossil energy as a low-emission power source. However, the cycle will increase O2 and H2O in the sCO2 and the implications of these additions have not been fully studied, particularly for lower cost steels that are needed in the lower temperature segments of the plant. Representative 9 and 12%Cr ferritic-martensitic (FM) steels and conventional and advanced austenitic steels were evaluated at 450-650°C to determine the maximum use temperatures in sCO2 with 1%O2 and 0.1%H2O at 300 bar. Compared to research grade (low impurity) sCO2 in indirect-fired cycles, the mass gains and scale thickness were not significantly changed for FM steels: both formed thick duplex Fe-rich scales. For stainless steels, higher mass gains were observed in all cases with increased Fe-rich oxide nodule formation. After 1000h at 650°C, the measured bulk C content was high for all of the steels with the addition of impurities suggesting a lower maximum operating temperature for steels. The post-exposure impact of the environment on room temperature tensile properties also will be discussed.

Multiphysics Simulation of Supercritical CO2 Gasification for Hydrogen Production

A bench-scale supercritical CO2 gasifier is being considered by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). A reacting computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed using ANSYS/Fluent in order to investigate the impact of various operating parameters on syngas composition. The model was validated using available data in the literature. Simulations were conducted over a range of coal-slurry loadings, reaction temperatures, system pressures, and oxygen mass flowrates with the goal of optimizing hydrogen production for the considered reactor. The results from the simulations identified a positive correlation between slurry loading and hydrogen production, while reactor temperature and pressure had a limited impact on H2 production at the conditions of interest. Additionally, the simulations indicated that oxygen mass flowrate has less of an impact on hydrogen production at higher slurry loadings.

CO2U Example Report: NETL CO2 to Renewable Diesel and Co-products via Algal Production

This report represents an example of a completed project for the CO2 Utilization program. The LCA for this example corresponds to the example product systems in the NETL openLCA Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database. This example LCA represents a fictional microalgae-to-biofuel, hereafter called algae-to-biofuel, technology pathway.

Radial Compressor Design and Off-Design for Trans-critical CO2 Operating Conditions

Presentation for the The 7th International Supercritical CO2 Power Cycles Symposium, February 21 – 24, 2022, San Antonio, Texas. A multi-staged intercooled centrifugal compressor design is performed for an indirect-fired sCO2 cycle and the design point data are used to generate the performance maps using a 2D mean-line analysis code. Fluid and turbomachinery similarity laws are applied to find an appropriate surrogate ideal gas fluid to be used in the design and performance map generation codes. The performance maps are then scaled back for the sCO2 fluid case using the affinity laws.

Pathways to CO2 Utilization and Storage for the Intermountain West Region

The presentation, delivered at the 2022 Carbon Management Project Review Meeting held in Pittsburgh, PA (August 15 – 19, 2022), provides a detailed perspective on CO2 utilization and storage as a deep decarbonization pathway as it relates to states that make up the Intermountain West (I-WEST) region of the U.S. Content within shows findings from evaluation of the opportunity and potential value delivery that exists for CCUS to deploy at significant scale in the I-WEST region considering the region’s prominent enabling factors. This work is part of a larger initiative involving the development of a regional, stakeholder-informed technology “roadmap” for a sustainable and equitable transition to carbon neutral in the I-WEST.

Methods for the separation of CO2 from a gas stream

Disclosed herein are 2-stage membrane separation methods for capturing CO2 from a feed gas. The methods can employ two selectively permeable membranes, which may be the same or different. The selectively permeable membrane can have a carbon dioxide permeance of from 500 to 3000 GPU at 57° C. and 1 atm feed pressure and a carbon dioxide:nitrogen selectivity of from 10 to 1000 at 57° C. and 1 atm feed pressure. High pressure ratios across the membranes can be achieved by compressing the feed gas to a high pressure, by using vacuum pumps to create a lowered pressure on the permeate side of the membrane, by using a sweep stream, or a combination thereof. When a sweep stream is used, the sweep stream may include a portion of the retentate gas stream obtained from the retentate side of one or more of the membranes used.

CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery Improvement in Conventional Fields Using Rich Gas

Research Hypothesis: The injection of a blend of rich hydrocarbon gas and CO2 into an oil reservoir will reduce molecular weight (MW) selectivity, lower minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) and viscosity of the oil, and improve gas solubility, resulting in an overall improvement in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) performance.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE TESTING OF A 275 BAR INTEGRALLY GEARED SUPERCRITICAL CO2 COMPRESSOR FOR POWER GENERATION

An integrally geared compressor-expander (compander) for supercritical CO2 (sCO2) was developed to convert thermal energy to electricity. With operating pressures of 275 bar, this turbomachine represents the state of the art in integrally geared machine architecture, hitting compressor inlet densities of 600 kg/m3 and discharge pressures of 275 bar. The product development was funded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office under EE0007114 to advance the state of the art in concentrated solar power applications; however, the technology itself is agnostic to heat source, and is predicted to achieve a thermal-to-electric conversion efficiency of 50% for any indirect heat source capable of providing turbine inlet temperatures of 700°C or greater. While the program encompassed the design and testing for the compressor and turbine elements, this paper will focus on the compressor design and operation. The paper will begin with an introduction to the cycle design and analysis of an indirectly heated integrally geared sCO2 compander, a discussion of the mechanical and aerodynamic design of the compressor that is a two stage radial compressor operating subcritically at 27,512 rpm, and will then proceed to describe the test facility and measured data to characterize the performance and robustness of the machine. The paper will conclude with a discussion on lessons learned throughout the course of commissioning and testing. Practical aspects of testing a compressor operating near the dome including complications relating to obtaining an accurate compressor flow map, efficiency calculations, flow unsteadiness, and associated measurement uncertainties will be discussed.
