Multiscale electro-chemo-mechanical model of high-capacity amorphous silicon anode material in sodium-ion batteries

The growing interest in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is fueled by their abundant resources and environmentally friendly nature, with amorphous silicon (a-Si) emerging as a promising anode material for enhancing capacity. However, the key challenge lies in sustaining reversible capacity during cycling. Here, in this work, we developed a multiscale electrochemical model incorporating an a-Si anode to elucidate the performance parameters of SIBs. Additionally, we integrated an electro-chemo-mechanical model at the particle level to capture stress generation, an essential factor in the degradation of high-capacity electrodes. Unlike existing models, our approach accounts for large-deformation chemo-mechanics at the particle scale and includes simulations under varying charge rates to explore multiscale behavior. The results reveal that coupled sodiation significantly prolongs complete cycling times and influences discharge dynamics, indicating that neglecting this coupling leads to an underestimation of actual capacity. Furthermore, we observed pronounced polarization effects at higher charge rates, resulting in heterogeneous stress distributions across the anode. With the identification of critical failure parameters for both active particles and binder materials, offering novel insights for mitigating degradation in high-capacity electrode systems.

Measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair production in association with a photon with the ATLAS experiment

A measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) production in association with a photon is presented. The measurement is performed in the single-lepton $t\bar{t}$ decay channel using proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN at a centre-of-mass-energy of 13 TeV during the years 2015–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . The charge asymmetry is obtained from the distribution of the difference of the absolute rapidities of the top quark and antiquark using a profile likelihood unfolding approach. It is measured to be A C =–0.003 ± 0.029 in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Non-Covalent Interactions and Helical Packing in Thiophene-Phenylene Copolymers: Tuning Solid-State Ordering and Charge Transport for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

In this study, we introduce two thiophene-phenylene-thiophene (TPT) polymers designed to leverage noncovalent intramolecular interactions to regulate main-chain conformation and enhance solid-state ordering. By incorporating unsubstituted thiophene (T) or bithiophene (2T) units, we reveal striking divergence in the thermal, morphological, and optoelectronic properties of the resulting films, facilitated by these noncovalent interactions. Using a combination of computational and experimental approaches, we show that annealing yields remarkably different polymer conformations and, consequently, charge transport properties. TPT-T undergoes a significant structural transformation, adopting a more planar backbone conformation and a highly crystalline, edge-on molecular orientation. In contrast, the introduction of a single additional thiophene unit in TPT-2T leads to a more isotropic molecular orientation with a slight preference for face-on alignment, resulting in a heterogeneous film structure that hinders charge transport despite achieving tighter molecular packing. Remarkably, despite being composed of achiral components, TPT-2T develops chirality upon annealing, indicating the formation of a helical conformation. Organic field-effect transistor measurements reveal that the well-ordered alignment in annealed TPT-T films results in higher charge carrier mobility and a narrower distribution of mobility values than in TPT-2T. These findings provide critical insights into the structure−property relationships of conjugated polymers, offering guidance for optimizing molecular design and processing strategies for highperformance organic electronic materials.

Lithiation Gradients and Tortuosity Factors in Thick NMC111-Argyrodite Solid-State Cathodes

Achieving high energy density in all-solid-state lithium batteries will require the design of thick cathodes, and these will need to operate reversibly under normal use conditions. We use high-energy depth-profiling X-ray diffraction to measure the localized lithium content of Li 1-x Ni 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 (NMC111) through the thickness of 110 μm thick composite cathodes. The composite cathodes consisted of NMC111 of varying mass loadings mixed with argyrodite solid electrolyte Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSC). During cycling at C/10, substantial lithiation gradients developed, and varying the NMC111 loading altered the nature of these gradients. Microstructural analysis and cathode modeling showed this was due to high tortuosities in the cathodes. This was particularly true in the solid electrolyte phase, which experienced a marked increase in tortuosity factor during the initial charge. Our results demonstrate that current distributions are observed in sulfide-based composites and that these will be an important consideration for practical design of all-solid-state batteries.

Three-dimensional coupling of electron cyclotron drift instability and ion–ion two stream instability

Electron cyclotron drift instability (ECDI) and ion–ion two stream instability (IITSI) are both kinetic instabilities that can be present in low-temperature, partially magnetized plasmas. The coupling of instabilities in a three-dimensional configuration leads to the existence of more than one unstable roots to the kinetic dispersion relation. In this paper, a generalized method has been developed for numerically evaluating solutions to the three-dimensional dispersion relation for coupled ECDI and IITSI, assuming cold singly and doubly charged ions and a Maxwellian velocity distribution function for the electrons. The present study demonstrates the coupling between ECDI and IITSI that affects the most unstable mode as a function of the wavenumbers in three dimensions and various plasma properties, including the applied electric field, magnetic field, electron temperature, ion velocities, and plasma density. One of the most notable results is that, while the most unstable mode with the largest growth rate is in the direction of the E×B drift in the two-dimensional cases, the most unstable mode for the three-dimensional configuration occurs in the oblique direction between the applied electric field and the E×B drift. Here, this agrees with experimental observations in cross field plasma sources using coherent Thomson scattering.

Atomic structure and Mott nature of the insulating charge density wave phase of 1T-TaS 2

Here, using x-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and computer modeling, we explore structure models for the complex charge density wave (CDW) phases of layered 1T-TaS 2 that both well capture their atomic-level features and are amenable to electronic structure calculations. The models give the most probable position of constituent atoms in terms of 3D repetitive unit cells comprising a minimum number of Ta–S layers. Structure modeling results confirm the emergence of star-of-David (SD) like clusters of Ta atoms in the high-temperature incommensurate (IC) CDW phase and show that, contrary to the suggestions of recent studies, the low-temperature commensurate (C) CDW phase expands upon cooling thus reducing lattice strain. The C-CDW phase is also found to preserve the stacking sequence of Ta–S layers found in the room temperature, nearly commensurate (NC) CDW phase to a large extent. DFT based on the PDF refined model shows that bulk C-CDW 1T-TaS 2 also preserves the insulating state of individual layers of SD clusters, favoring the Mott physics description of the metal-to-insulator (NC-CDW to C-CDW) phase transition in 1T-TaS 2 . Our work highlights the importance of using precise crystal structure models in determining the nature of electronic phases in complex materials.

Local Structural Coherence and Interfacial Charge Transfer in Cu 2 ⁢S/Mo⁢S 2 Heterostructure

Precise control over electronic coupling at nanoscale interfaces is critical for designing materials with tunable charge-transfer behavior and catalytic function. Heterostructures with locally coherent interfaces provide a platform for interrogating interfacial charge redistribution in coupled material systems. Here, we report Cu 2 ⁢S/Mo⁢S 2 heterostructures exhibiting nanoscale crystallographic alignment, which are synthesized through a rapid thermal transformation pathway. We employed electrochemical reduction reactions to probe interfacial charge transfer, revealing shifts in product distribution attributable to modified interfacial energetics, even in the absence of optimized catalytic performance. The observed formate Faradaic efficiency suggests that interfacial electronic modulation in the heterostructure shifts product selectivity towards formate, highlighting how interface-driven electronic modulation can direct reaction pathways and influence product selectivity. Optimizing catalyst loading, architecture, and reactor configuration will be critical for future improvement. Structural and compositional integrity were confirmed through powder x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Electron transfer between Cu 2 ⁢S and Mo⁢S 2 domains was further evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, while selected-area electron diffraction revealed local crystallographic alignment consistent with a local epitaxial relationship at the Cu 2 S/Mo⁢S 2 heterointerface. To illustrate the broader applicability of this approach, a Zn⁢S/Mo⁢S 2 heterostructure was also synthesized using the same microwave strategy, confirming the generalizability of interfacial engineering principles across metal sulfide-Mo⁢S 2 systems. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that controlled local epitaxial alignment serves as an effective design principle for tuning interfacial energetics and catalytic reactivity in complex heterostructure materials.

Complications in the interpretation of the charge-asymmetry-dependent π flow for the chiral magnetic wave

The charge asymmetry ($A_ch$) dependence of the $π^₋$ and $π^+$ elliptic flow difference, $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$, has been regarded as a sensitive observable for the possible chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this work, we first demonstrate that, due to nonflow backgrounds, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$. The trivial contribution to the slope of triangle flow difference $Δv_3( A_{\text{ch}})$ can be negative if the nonflow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. After eliminating the trivial term, we find that the nonflow between like-sign pairs gives rise to an additional positive slope to $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ because of the larger multiplicity dilution to $π^+$ ($π^₋$) at positive (negative) $A_{\text{ch}}$. We further find that the competition between different π sources can introduce another nontrivial linear-$A_{\text{ch}}$ term due to their different multiplicity fluctuations and anisotropic flows. We then study the effect of neutral cluster (resonance) decays as a mechanism for local charge conservation on the slope parameter of $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$. We find that the slope parameter is sensitive to the kinematics of those neutral clusters. Light resonances give positive slopes while heavy resonances give negative slopes. Local charge conservation from continuum cluster mass distribution can give a positive slope parameter comparable to experimental data. Our studies indicate that many non-CMW physics mechanisms can give rise to a $A_{\text{ch}}$-dependent $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ and the interpretation of $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ in terms of the CMW is delicate.

Longitudinal dynamics and particle production in relativistic nuclear collisions

This work presents a three-dimensional dynamical initialization model for relativistic heavy-ion collisions, implementing local energy-momentum conservation and baryon charge fluctuations at string junctions. Constraining parameters using experimental data from p + p collisions at various collision energies, the model provides a very good description of the charged hadron and net proton rapidity distributions in Au +Au collisions from 7.7 to 200 GeV and Pb + Pb collisions at 8.77 and 17.3 GeV. Here we demonstrate the importance of fluctuations of baryon densities to string junctions for describing net-proton distributions at collision energies of 62.4 and 200 GeV. Including this improved baryon stopping description along with the requirement of strangeness neutrality also yields a good description of identified particle yields as functions of the collision energy above 7.7 GeV. We further study asymmetric p + Al and (p,d, 3 He) + Au collisions at the top RHIC energy and p + Pb, Xe + Xe, and Pb + Pb collisions at LHC energies. We identify the produced particle rapidity distributions in asymmetric collision systems as particularly useful for constraining models of the early-time longitudinal dynamics.

Reaction dynamics and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section with 12 C+ 1 H at 95 MeV/nucleon

Reaction dynamics and effective in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross section are studied, using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) model with one of the simplest heavy ion collisions, 12 C+ ⁢1 H. The roles of different stochastic processes are studied, which are installed in the original AMD. One is the diffusion process as a part of the quantum fluctuation originated from the Fermi motion during the time evolution of the wave packets in the mean field (AMD/D). The second is a coalescence treatment for light clusters with A ≤ 8 (AMD/D-COALS). The third is the collision process, installed in AMD with different form of the in-medium NN cross sections. These different processes are examined, using the experimental angular distributions and energy spectra of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. The effective in-medium NN cross sections are evaluated from the simulated AMD events and compared with the experimentally extracted values. A good agreement is obtained between the AMD values from the 12 C + 1 H reaction at 95 MeV/nucleon and the experimental results for nuclear matter.

Search for Electron Neutrinos in Multiple Topologies with the MicroBooNE Experiment

This note presents the status of the measurement of electron neutrinos from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) with the MicroBooNE experiment. The analysis is aimed at investigating the nature of the low energy excess of electromagnetic activity observed by the MiniBooNE experiment. The $ν_e$ event selection relies on topological and calorimetric information to characterise particles produced in these interactions, leveraging the Pandora multi-algorithm reconstruction framework as well as custom particle identification and pattern recognition tools. Results presented in this note use 5.88 × 10 20 protons on target of data collected between 2015 and 2018. These include the performance of particle identification tools for $\mu/p$ and $e/\gamma$ separation, along with electromagnetic shower calibration with the largest sample of $\pi^0$ events measured on argon. Progress towards the completion of this analysis is shown through the measurement of high-energy charged-current $ν_e$ interactions and their kinematic distributions using both inclusive (1eX) and exclusive (1$e$0$p$0$\pi$ and 1$e$N$p$0$\pi$) channels. Measurements of charged-current $ν_µ$ interactions aimed at constraining flux and cross-section systematic uncertainties are also shown. We present the analysis’ preliminary sensitivity of an electron-like signal hypothesis to the MiniBooNE excess which includes flux, cross-section, and detector systematic uncertainties.

Advancing Transportation Efficiency and Electric Vehicles in Tonga: A Review of Relevant Trends, Best Practices, and Future Work

Tonga is facing a transportation sector characterized by private passenger vehicles, poorly maintained roads and walkways, and an inadequate public transit system. By understanding detailed global and regional trends for transport energy efficiency and electric vehicles (EVs) within this context, the Government of Tonga can proactively plan its future transportation systems. In addition to global and regional trends, this presentation also briefly examines Tonga's own transportation policies and actions. Jurisdictions leading in EV adoption have implemented policies such as reducing taxes on EVs compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, providing subsidies and rebates for EV charger installation, instituting an age limit on imported ICE vehicles, and developing EV maintenance courses to expand the skill set of current automotive technicians. This presentation was developed for the Pacific Islands Workshop on Electric Mobility, held from November 28th to November 30th 2022 in Fiji. NREL presented virtually and the conference was sponsored by the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE).

Developing low-cost and durable heat exchangers is critical for next-generation heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The emerging requirement to minimize the total refrigerant charge inventory while ensuring a uniform distribution of refrigerant has led to the deployment of advanced manufacturing strategies. At the same time, corrosion is a longstanding issue for metal components, especially those used in heat exchanger (HX) applications. In this study, Al-Ce-Mg alloy-based HXs have been investigated. The corrosion resistance of HXs prototype manufactured by the casting process has been examined and the potential of a new manufacturing approach has been explored to meet the requirements of emerging needs.

Correlation of Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Polarization and Charge Transport in Blended Hybrid Organic–Inorganic Perovskites on Macro- and Nanoscales

Progress in flexible organic electronics necessitates a full understanding of how local inhomogeneities impact electronic and ionic conduction pathways and underlie macroscopic device characteristics. In this work, we used frequency- and time-resolved macro- and nanoprobe measurements to study spatiotemporal characteristics of multiscale charge transport dynamics in a series of ternary-blended hybrid organic inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) (MA 0.95– x FA x Cs 0.05 PbI 3 ). We show that A-site cation composition defines charge transport mechanisms across broad temporal (10 2 –10 –6 s) and spatial (millimeters–picometers) scales. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations suggest that insertion of FA results in a dynamic lattice, improved ion transport, and dipole screening. We demonstrate that correlations between macro- and nanoscale measurements provide a pathway for accessing distribution of relaxation in nanoscale polarization and charge transport dynamics of ionically conductive functional perovskites.

Mobility Selective Ion Soft-Landing and Characterization Enabled Using Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation

In this study, while conventional ion-soft landing uses the mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio to achieve molecular selection for deposition, here we demonstrate the use of Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulation (SLIM) for mobility-based ion selection and deposition. The dynamic rerouting capabilities of SLIM were leveraged to enable the rerouting of a selected range of mobilities to a different SLIM path (rather than MS) that terminated at a deposition surface. A selected mobility range from a phosphazene ion mixture was rerouted and deposited with a current pulse (~150 pA) resembling its mobility peak. In addition, from a mixture of tetra-alkyl ammonium (TAA) ions containing chain lengths of C5–C8, selected chains (C6, C7) were collected on a surface, reconstituted into solution-phase, and subsequently analyzed with a SLIM-qToF to obtain an IMS/MS spectrum, confirming the identity of the selected species. Further, this method was used to characterize triply charged tungsten-polyoxometalate anions, PW 12 O 40 3– (WPOM). The arrival time distribution of the IMS/MS showed multiple peaks associated with the triply charged anion (PW 12 O 40 3– ), of which a selected ATD was deposited and imaged using TEM. Additionally, the identity of the deposited WPOM was ascertained using energy-dispersive (EDS) spectroscopy. Further, we present theory and computations that reveal ion landing energies, the ability to modulate the energies, and deposition spot sizes.

Electric Vehicle Charging Management in Smart Energy Communities to Increase Renewable Energy Hosting Capacity

Abnormal climates due to global warming have emerged as a big concern in the global community. To mitigate climate change and achieve sustainability, distributed energy resources (DERs), including solar and wind, have been recently deployed in power systems. As the penetration level of DERs has increased, however, it caused a multitude of issues in the power systems, such as voltage fluctuation in the distribution network limiting renewable hosting capacity. On the other hand, the electric vehicle (EV) industry is rapidly growing to facilitate the transition to a carbon-neutral community, illuminating the potential of EVs as a flexible grid asset to mitigate some of the issues and improve grid operation, if properly exploited. To explore the potential of EVs, this paper proposes an EV scheduling strategy. By using an optimal EV charging scheduling proposed, distribution system operators (DSOs) can minimize their operating costs and stably operate the system with a high level of DERs. To validate the method, a modified IEEE 33-bus system with DERs is developed. The case study shows the proposed scheduling strategizes EV charging to reduce the cost of PV curtailment. In the study, the method outperforms the renewable-only case with curtailment by 4.97% in DSO cost. It also demonstrates its potential to increase the renewable hosting capacity by harmonizing EV charging with renewables.
