Transverse vibration and buckling of a cantilevered beam with tip body under constant axial base acceleration

The planar transverse bending behavior of a uniform cantilevered beam with rigid tip body subject to constant axial base acceleration was analyzed. The beam is inextensible and capable of small elastic transverse bending deformations only. Two classes of tip bodies are recognized: (1) mass centers located along the beam tip tangent line; and (2) mass centers with arbitrary offset towards the beam attachment point. The steady state response is studied for the beam end condition cases: free, tip mass, tip body with restricted mass center offset, and tip body with arbitrary mass center offset. The first three cases constitute classical Euler buckling problems, and the characteristic equation for the critical loads/accelerations are determined. For the last case a unique steady state solution exists. The free vibration response is examined for the two classes of tip body. The characteristic equation, eigenfunctions and their orthogonality properties are obtained for the case of restricted mass center offset. The vibration problem is nonhomogeneous for the case of arbitrary mass center offset. The exact solution is obtained as a sum of the steady state solution and a superposition of simple harmonic motions.

Effects of transverse shearing on cylindrical bending, vibration, and buckling of laminated plates

The displacements for cylindrical bending and stretching of laminated and thick plates are expressed through-the-thickness by a few algebraic terms and a complete set of trigonometric terms. Only a few terms of this series are needed to get sufficiently accurate results for laminated and thick plates. Equations of equilibrium based on a sufficient number of terms of this series for displacements are determined using variational theorems from three-dimensional elasticity. Several examples are worked out. The displacements and stresses are obtained for simply supported isotropic and layered beams with a rectangular cross section and a sinusoidal lateral load distribution. These results are compared to an exact elasticity solution. Results for several approximations are obtained for a simply supported and a clamped beam with a rectangular cross section loaded at the center and results are compared to experimental results. Results are also obtained for isotropic and layered beams with a rectangular cross section for several approximations for the lowest natural frequency and buckling load.

Qualitative properties of large buckled states of spherical shells

A system of 6th-order quasi-linear Ordinary Differential Equations is analyzed to show the global existence of axisymmetrically buckled states. A surprising nodal property is obtained which shows that everywhere along a branch of solutions that bifurcates from a simple eigenvalue of the linearized equation, the number of simultaneously vanishing points of both shear resultant and circumferential bending moment resultant remains invariant, provided that a certain auxiliary condition is satisfied.

Inclusion of elastically connected members in exact buckling and frequency calculations

A standard stiffness matrix procedure which permits any combination of rigid, elastic, pinned or sliding connections of the degrees of freedom at the ends of a member to the nodes of its parent structure is described, in order to show how easily it can be extended to allow an existing algorithm to be used to ensure that no eigenvalues of the parent structure can be missed even when 'exact' member theory is used. The eigenvalues are the natural frequencies of undamped free vibration analyses or the critical load factors of buckling problems. The method preserves the exactness of the member theory and an efficient method for computer application is indicated. The theory also permits any combination of rigid, elastic, pinned or sliding connections between the freedoms of a substructure and those of its parent structure.

Model-size reduction for the buckling and vibration analyses of anisotropic panels

A computational procedure is presented for reducing the size of the model used in the buckling and vibration analyses of symmetric anisotropic panels to that of the corresponding orthotropic model. The key elements of the procedure are the application of an operator splitting technique through the decomposition of the material stiffness matrix of the panel into the sum of orthotropic and nonorthotropic (anisotropic) parts and the use of a reduction method through successive application of the finite element method and the classical Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The effectiveness of the procedure is demonstrated by numerical examples.

Buckling analysis of the quadripod structure for the NASA 70-meter antenna

As part of the effort to extend the diameter of three Deep Space Network large earth antennas from 64 meters to 70 meters, a slim profiled quadripod structure was designed to support a 7.7 meter diameter subreflector for the 70 meter antenna. The new quadripod design, which particularly emphasizes reduced radio frequency blockage, is achieved by means of a narrow cross sectional profile of the legs. Buckling analysis, using NASTRAN, was conducted in this study to verify the safety margin for the quadripod structural stability.

The dynamic aspects of thermo-elasto-viscoplastic snap-through and creep buckling phenomena

Use of a mathematical model and solution methodology, to examine dynamic buckling and dynamic postbuckling behavior of shallow arches and spherical caps made of a realistic material and undergoing non-isothermal, elasto-viscoplastic deformation was examined. Thus, geometric as well as material type nonlinearities of higher order are included in this analysis. The dynamic stability problem is studied under impulsive loading and suddenly applied loading with loads of constant magnitude and infinite duration. A finite element model was derived directly from the incrementally formulated nonlinear shell equations, by using a tensor-oriented procedure. As an example of the results, the time history of the midspan displacement of a damped shallow circular arch is presented.

Buckling of simply supported plate assemblies subject to shear loading

An analysis is presented of the shear buckling load of an arbitrary simply-supported prismatic plate assembly or stiffened panel configuration. The method utilizes stiffness matrices developed by Wittrick (1968). For the restraint of simple support along edges perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, various wavelengths of response are combined using an energy method that involves only a boundary integral. Numerical results for plate and panel configurations show the accuracy and convergence of the method.

Non-isothermal elastoviscoplastic snap-through and creep buckling of shallow arches

The problem of buckling of shallow arches under transient thermomechanical loads is investigated. The analysis is based on nonlinear geometric and constitutive relations, and is expressed in a rate form. The material constitutive equations are capable of reproducing all non-isothermal, elasto-viscoplastic characteristics. The solution scheme is capable of predicting response which includes pre and postbuckling with creep and plastic effects. The solution procedure is demonstrated through several examples which include both creep and snap-through behavior.

Thermal viscoplastic buckling during the growth of silicon ribbon

This paper is an analysis of the conditions to be satisfied in order to avoid buckling during the growth of a silicon ribbon that is being slowly pulled from the melt. A viscoplastic constitutive equation with a dislocation density effect is used to model the material behavior. The critical thicknesses and the corresponding deflection shapes are calculated by the finite element method for the cantilever boundary conditions. The value of the parameter which controls the speed of the lateral deflection is computed by using Galerkin's method. It is demonstrated that, due to the effect of viscoplasticity, some deflection shapes increase in magnitude with time and other shapes damp out.

Local buckling and crippling of composite stiffener sections

Local buckling, postbuckling, and crippling (failure) of channel, zee, and I- and J-section stiffeners made of AS4/3502 graphite-epoxy unidirectional tape are studied by experiment and analysis. Thirty-six stiffener specimens were tested statically to failure in axial compression as intermediate length columns. Web width is 1.25 inches for all specimens, and the flange width-to-thickness ratio ranges from 7 to 28 for the specimens tested. The radius of the stiffener corners is either 0.125 or 0.250 inches. A sixteen-ply orthotropic layup, an eight-ply quasi-isotropic layup, and a sixteen-ply quasi-isotropic layup are examined. Geometrically nonlinear analyses of five specimens were performed with the STAGS finite element code. Analytical results are compared to experimental data. Inplane stresses from STAGS are used to conduct a plane stress failure analysis of these specimens. Also, the development of interlaminar stress equations from equilibrium for classical laminated plate theory is presented. An algorithm to compute high order displacement derivatives required by these equations based on the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is discussed.

A finite element formulation for the large deflection random response of thermally buckled plates

By using the linear mode shapes of a thermally buckled structure, a governing system of finite element equations for large-deflection random vibrations is reduced to a system of nonlinear modal equations. This system is then solved using the method of equivalent linearization. The methodology developed in this study is applicable to the design of aerospace vehicles subjected to combined thermal/acoustic loads.

Sensitivity of buckling loads of anisotropic shells of revolution to geometric imperfections and design changes

Buckling load sensitivity calculations in the shell-of-revolution program FASOR are discussed. This development is based on Koiter's initial postbuckling theory, which has been generalized to include the effect of stiffness changes, as well as geometric imperfections. The implementation in FASOR is valid for anisotropic, as well as orthotropic, shells. Examples are presented for cylindrical panels under axial compression, complete cylindrical shells in torsion, and antisymmetric angle-ply cylindrical panels under edge shear.

Design guide for predicting nonlinear random response (including snap-through) of buckled plates

This design guide describes a method for predicting the random response of flat and curved plates which is based on theoretical analyses and experimental results. The plate curvature can be due to postbuckling, in-plane mechanical or thermal stresses. Based on a single mode formula, root mean square values of the strain response to broadband excitation are evaluated for different static buckled configurations using the equivalent linearization technique. The effects on the overall strain response due to instability motion of snap-through are included. Panel parameters include clamped and simply-supported boundaries, aspect ratio, thickness and length. Analytical results are compared with experimental results from tests with 12 in. x 15 in. aluminum plates under thermal loading in a progressive wave facility. Comparisons are also made with results from tests with a 2 in. x 15 in. x 0.032 in. aluminum beam under base mechanical excitation. The comparisons help to assess the accuracy of the theory and the conditions under which deviations from the theory due to effects of imperfection and higher modes are significant.
