Artificial Intelligence Software for Assessing Postural Stability

A software package reads and analyzes pressure distributions from sensors mounted under a person's feet. Pressure data from sensors mounted in shoes, or in a platform, can be used to provide a description of postural stability (assessing competence to deficiency) and enables the determination of the person's present activity (running, walking, squatting, falling). This package has three parts: a preprocessing algorithm for reading input from pressure sensors; a Hidden Markov Model (HMM), which is used to determine the person's present activity and level of sensing-motor competence; and a suite of graphical algorithms, which allows visual representation of the person's activity and vestibular function over time.

Multi Modality Brain Mapping System (MBMS) Using Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition

A Multimodality Brain Mapping System (MBMS), comprising one or more scopes (e.g., microscopes or endoscopes) coupled to one or more processors, wherein the one or more processors obtain training data from one or more first images and/or first data, wherein one or more abnormal regions and one or more normal regions are identified; receive a second image captured by one or more of the scopes at a later time than the one or more first images and/or first data and/or captured using a different imaging technique; and generate, using machine learning trained using the training data, one or more viewable indicators identifying one or abnormalities in the second image, wherein the one or more viewable indicators are generated in real time as the second image is formed. One or more of the scopes display the one or more viewable indicators on the second image.

NEPP Processor Enclave: Testing Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

Computational device families are converging and multiple EEE components are required for a complete HPC subsystem. The components of this “processor enclave” are sensitive to radiation effects and therefore must be characterized for mission assurance. NEPP’s standardized approach to testing the Processor Enclave includes math, graphics, and AI and Machine Learning test vectors and device hardware capable of these applications.

Application of Artificial Intelligence for Surface PM2.5 Estimations from Geostationary Satellite and Atmospheric Numerical Model Data

PM2.5, particulate matter (PM) with a diameter less than or equal to 2.5 μm, is emitted from anthropogenic fuel combustion and forest fires. Due to their small size, PM2.5 can penetrate into respiratory systems and cause or exacerbate serious illness. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the levels of surface PM2.5 but surface monitoring has spatial and temporal limitations. The Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrievals from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) missions and meteorological factors can be utilized as an alternative technique to estimate surface PM2.5 levels at a higher spatial and temporal resolution compared to surface monitors. Traditional estimation approaches rely on linear regression techniques and have limitations modeling the nonlinear relationship between the meteorological factors, AOD retrievals, and surface PM2.5. We compare different machine learning techniques and identify the best-suited model that can represent the nonlinearity between the factors affecting PM2.5 levels

Chapter 4: Packings, simulation, and big data--artificial intelligence emulation of soft matter

At the suggestion of NASA’s Physical Science Research Program in the Space Life and Physical Science Research and Application Division, Paul Chaikin, Noel Clark, and Sidney Nagel organized a focus session and workshop for the 2020 American Physical Society (APS) March meeting under the auspices of the Division of Soft Matter. Three overarching themes emerged from the workshop and are presented with additional details: • Machines made out of machines • Scalable self-sustaining ecosystems • Active materials and metamaterials This report lays out only some of the potential directions for soft matter dynamics over the next two decades. It also lays out the role that gravity plays in the organization of the basic building blocks of matter. Not only will research on soft matter have tremendous application towards understanding its behavior in our terrestrial environment, but also potentially in other NASA programs such as planetary science, exploration, robotics, etc. Attached is a White Paper for the Decadal Survey that consists of an extended Title along with the previous Introduction and Chapter 2.4 from NASA/CP-20205010493.
