Cryogenic storage on the moon.

Cryogenic fluid storage on moon surface, considering Lambert reflection law, thermal insulation performance, incident heat flux and boil-off rates

Mounting, support, and isolation of various components of a hydrogen maser

Polytetrafluoroethylene tubing partially collapsed during assembly protects the shields from thermal expansion stress in isothermal and magnetic canisters. Thermal insulation between the shields is made from epoxy foam cast in position and cured under high temperature. Stacked mounting array supports the maser's hexapole magnet and hydrogen atom source.

Toroidal mirrors provide virtual walls for breaks in light pipes

Section of light pipe consists of separated segments having opposed toroidal mirrors that intercept meridional rays to present virtual wall in space between mirrors, thus insuring uninterrupted light transmission down the pipe. Design affords internal access to pipe section. Segments are electrically or thermally insulated from one another.

Vacuum-jacketed rotary joints for pipelines

Joint absorbs all significant torque, is as rugged as heavy metallic pipe, and has thermal insulation comparable to length of flexible pipe. Design is adaptable to any pipes transporting gases or liquids, including those which are noxious or corrosive.

Deflection resistance indicator

Instrument for nondestructively measuring compression resistance of spray foam used as thermal insulation was developed. Cylindrical indicator has probe with coil spring to provide force and indicating dial. Probe is manually pressed against area to be tested until complete foot area contacts foam surfaces.

Passive rejection of heat from an isotope heat source through an open door

The isotope heat-source design for a Brayton power system includes a door in the thermal insulation through which the heat can be passively rejected to space when the power system is not operating. The results of an analysis to predict the heat-source surface temperature and the heat-source heat-exchanger temperature during passive heat rejection as a function of insulation door opening angle are presented. They show that for a door opening angle greater than 20 deg, the temperatures are less than the steady-state temperatures during power system operation.

Design and evaluation of active cooling systems for Mach 6 cruise vehicle wings

Active cooling systems, which included transpiration, film, and convective cooling concepts, are examined. Coolants included hydrogen, helium, air, and water. Heat shields, radiation barriers, and thermal insulation are considered to reduce heat flow to the cooling systems. Wing sweep angles are varied from 0 deg to 75 deg and wing leading edge radii of 0.05 inch and 2.0 inches are examined. Structural temperatures are varied to allow comparison of aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, and superalloy structural materials. Cooled wing concepts are compared among themselves, and with the uncooled concept on the basis of structural weight, cooling system weight, and coolant weight.

An emergency survival suit

A thermally insulative inflatable garment designed specifically as a lightweight low storage volume emergency suit for subzero weather survival is reported. Testing confirms that the inflatable suit design satisfies the objectives for a subject standing at rest with environmental temperatures down to -450 F if the garment is inflated with Freon.

A model to predict the degradation of a SiGe thermopile.

Discussion of the various phenomena which affect the available output power of a typical radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG), including estimates of the magnitude of these effects. Power degradation, as well as the corresponding changes in operating temperature, are calculated by means of a computer code which systematically accounts for the time- and temperature-dependent variables. A model for predicting available output power of an RTG is developed which includes changes in performance due to fuel decay, alteration of bulk thermoelectric properties, changes in electrode contacts, geometry changes due to material sublimation, and degradation of the thermal insulation.

Detailed mathematical models of a radioisotope thermoelectric generator.

Two new models for the design and performance analysis of RTG's are outlined in this paper. The first model assumes a small-signal transient-type calculational sequence that permits the separation of steady-state operation of the generator from its dynamic behavior. The second model uses a numerical (finite difference) solution of the performance equations of the RTG. Both models enable the investigation of transient and steady-state performance of RTG's. Simplifying assumptions have been kept to a minimum in the new RTG models and these models enable the inclusion of generator end losses, axial temperature gradients and heat interchange between thermoelements and thermal insulation in RTG performance calculations in a self-consistent manner.

Titanium honeycomb structure

A brazed titanium honeycomb sandwich system for supersonic transport wing cover panels provides the most efficient structure spanwise, chordwise, and loadwise. Flutter testing shows that high wing stiffness is most efficient in a sandwich structure. This structure also provides good thermal insulation if liquid fuel is carried in direct contact with the wing structure in integral fuel tanks.

Fabrication technology: A compilation

A compilation is presented which supplies technical information on the assembly of diverse components into functional assemblies and subassemblies, as well as information on several fasteners and fastening techniques that join components, subassemblies, and complete assemblies to achieve a functional unit. Quick-disconnect fasteners are described, along with several devices and methods for attaching thermal insulators, and for joining and separating objects in the absence of gravity.
