Itinerant to relocalized transition of f electrons in the Kondo insulator CeRu 4 Sn 6

In this study, the three-dimensional electronic structure and the nature of Ce 4 f electrons of the Kondo insulator CeRu 4 Sn 6 are investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, utilizing tunable photon energies. Our results reveal (i) the three-dimensional k -space nature of the Fermi surface, (ii) the localized-to-itinerant transition of f electrons occurs at a much high temperature than the hybridization gap opening temperature, and (iii) the "relocalization" of itinerant f electrons below 25 K, which could be the precursor to the establishment of magnetic order.

Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 : Probing site mixing of the Ru 3 Sn 7 structure type with elements difficult to distinguish by diffraction

Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 was synthesized through arc-melting stoichiometric ratios of the elements, and a Ru 3 Sn 7 -type structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Because Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 contains Ga and Ge, which have very similar X-ray and neutron scattering factors, any Ga/Ge crystallographic site preference cannot be determined with diffraction alone. The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of using multiple techniques to characterize otherwise structurally ambiguous intermetallic compounds. Here, we utilize 71 Ga nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and an analysis of the X-ray absorption fine structure to clarify the amount of Ga/Ge site mixing. Our combined use of X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy provides a comprehensive structural analysis of Ga site mixing across the Ge crystallographic sites, enhancing the understanding of the structure and properties of Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 .

Intrinsic two-way shape memory effect in a Ni-Mn-Sn metamagnetic shape memory microwire

We report an intrinsic two-way shape memory effect with a fully recoverable strain of 1.0% was achieved in an as-prepared Ni 50 Mn 37.5 Sn 12.5 metamagnetic shape memory microwire fabricated by Taylor-Ulitovsky method. This two-way shape memory effect is mainly owing to the internal stress caused by the retained martensite in austenite matrix, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy observations and high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments. After superelastic training for 30 loading/unloading cycles at room temperature, the amount of retained martensite increased and the recoverable strain of two-way shape memory effect increased significantly to 2.2%. Furthermore, a giant recoverable strain of 11.2% was attained under a bias stress of 300 MPa in the trained microwire. These properties confer this microwire great potential for micro-actuation applications.

Disorder trapping and formation of antiphase nanodomains in Ni 3 Sn: in situ observation and high resolution characterization

Rapid solidification of the intermetallic Ni 3 Sn compound from an undercooled liquid was investigated using time-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Primary growth of an ordered and a disordered cubic solid was observed in situ at a low and a high undercooling, respectively. The disordered cubic solid was reordered after rapid solidification and experienced a solid-state transformation in cooling. A HRTEM study revealed high density of crystal defects and nanodomains in the transformed matrix. A HAADFSTEM study determined that the nanodomains are antiphase domains with chemical disorder. These observations indicated a possibility of online control of mechanical properties in additively manufactured intermetallics.

Spin diffusion in the Phosphorus-31 NMR relaxation in a layered crystalline α-Sn(IV) phosphate contaminated by paramagnetic impurities

The study of a layered crystalline Sn(IV) phosphate by solid-state NMR has demonstrated that the 31 P T 1 relaxation of phosphate groups, dependent on spinning rate is completely controlled by the limited spin diffusion to paramagnetic ions found by EPR. The spin-diffusion constant, D(SD), was estimated as 2.04 10 –14 cm 2 s –1 . Finally, the conclusion was supported by the 31 P T 1 time measurements in zirconium phosphate 1–1, also showing paramagnetic ions and in diamagnetic compound (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 .

Effect of substrate temperature on the growth of Nb 3 Sn film on Nb by multilayer sputtering

Here, we report on the fabrication of niobium tin (Nb 3 Sn) films by multilayer sequential sputtering on niobium at substrate temperatures ranging from room temperature to 250 °C. The multilayers were then annealed inside a separate vacuum furnace at 950 °C for 3 h. The material properties of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The superconducting properties of the films were studied by four-point probe resistivity measurements from room temperature to below the superconducting critical temperature T c . The highest film T c was 17.76 K, obtained when the multilayers were deposited at room temperature. When the deposition temperature was raised to 250 °C, a significant reduction in voids was achieved while the film's T c was 17.58 K.

Exploration, Prediction, and Experimental Verification of Structure and Optoelectronic Properties in I 2 -Eu-IV-X 4 (I = Li, Cu, Ag; IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Chalcogenide Semiconductors

Recently, there has been extensive research into photovoltaic, thermoelectric, and nonlinear optical applications of chalcogenide semiconductors within the large set of defect-resistant I 2 -II-IV-X4 (I = Li, Cu, Ag; II = Ba, Sr, Eu, Pb; IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compounds. Five Eu-including compounds have previously been reported within this family, but a comparative study of possible structures and electronic properties of all 18 Eu-based combinations is still absent. Herein, we use hybrid density functional theory to study rare-earth-including I 2 -II-IV-X 4 semiconductors with Eu on the II site, in order to further understand this family and test the geometric tolerance factor approach (reported in our previous work) as a tool for predicting potential stable structures. We investigate how the exchange mixing parameter of the HSE06 density functional, α, affects the energetic positions of electronic levels, especially of the localized f-electron orbitals near the band edges of the extended semiconductor structures, using literature photoemission and band gap data of EuS for comparison. Lowest-energy quaternary structure candidates, energy band structures, and densities of states are computationally predicted for all 18 materials. Based on its predicted photovoltaics-relevant band gap, the previously unknown compound Cu 2 EuSnSe 4 was selected and synthesized. Furthermore, the experimental structure, lattice parameters, and band gap of Cu 2 EuSnSe 4 are consistent with the computational predictions, confirming a 1.55 eV band gap.

Observation of Coexisting Weak Localization and Superconducting Fluctuations in Strained Sn 1– x In x Te Thin Films

Topological superconductors have attracted tremendous excitement as they are predicted to host Majorana zero modes that can be utilized for topological quantum computing. Candidate topological superconductor Sn 1–x In x Te thin films (0 < x < 0.3) grown by molecular beam epitaxy and strained in the (111) plane are shown to host quantum interference effects in the conductivity coexisting with superconducting fluctuations above the critical temperature T c . An analysis of the normal state magnetoresistance reveals these effects. A crossover from weak antilocalization to localization is consistently observed in superconducting samples, indicating that superconductivity originates dominantly from charge carriers occupying trivial states that may be strongly spin–orbit split. A large enhancement of the conductivity is observed above T c , indicating the presence of superconducting fluctuations. Furthermore, our results motivate a re-examination of the debated pairing symmetry of this material when subjected to quantum confinement and lattice strain.

First-Principles Studies on Sc 2 RuZ (Z = Si, Ge, Sn) Inverse Heusler Alloys: Structural, Electronic, and Transport Properties

The continuous demand for efficient, nontoxic, and thermally stable materials for room-temperature energy conversion motivates the exploration of novel thermoelectric systems beyond the traditional magnetic Heusler alloys. While full and half-Heusler compounds, especially Co-, Ni-, and Mn-based systems, have demonstrated promising thermoelectric properties, their typically high operating temperatures and magnetic complexities limit their applicability in ambient thermal management. In this context, we investigate whether Sc-based inverse Heusler alloys can offer a viable nonmagnetic alternative with competitive thermoelectric performance. In this work, we perform a systematic first-principles study of the inverse Heusler compounds Sc 2 RuZ (Z = Si, Ge, Sn), focusing on their structural, electronic, mechanical, and thermodynamic-thermoelectric properties. Density Functional Theory (DFT) was employed to compute optimized lattice structures and band dispersion, while dynamical stability was assessed via phonon calculations. Thermoelectric transport coefficients, including Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity, were estimated using the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory within the constant relaxation time approximation. Our results show that all Sc 2 RuZ compounds are thermodynamically stable semiconductors with indirect band gaps of 0.12–0.16 eV and exhibit high elastic moduli, especially Sc 2 RuSn, which demonstrates superior stiffness and incompressibility. Importantly, all compounds display promising room-temperature thermoelectric characteristics, including high Seebeck coefficients and power factors. These findings reveal that Sc 2 RuZ alloys represent a rare class of stable, nonmagnetic inverse Heusler semiconductors with intrinsic thermoelectric potential at room temperature, unlike many existing Heusler systems optimized for spintronics or high-temperature operation. This work expands the known design space for Heusler-based thermoelectrics and offers a theoretical basis for experimental realization of efficient, low-temperature, nonmagnetic thermoelectric materials.

Orbital character of the spin-reorientation transition in TbMn 6 Sn 6

Ferromagnetic (FM) order in a two-dimensional kagome layer is predicted to generate a topological Chern insulator without an applied magnetic field. The Chern gap is largest when spin moments point perpendicular to the kagome layer, enabling the capability to switch topological transport properties, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect, by controlling the spin orientation. In TbMn 6 Sn 6 , the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the Tb 3+ ion is effective at generating the Chern state within the FM Mn kagome layers while a spin-reorientation (SR) transition to easy-plane order above T SR = 310 K provides a mechanism for switching. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering to provide key insights into the fundamental nature of the SR transition. The observation of two Tb excitations, which are split by the magnetic anisotropy energy, indicates an effective two-state orbital character for the Tb ion, with a uniaxial ground state and an isotropic excited state. The simultaneous observation of both modes below T SR confirms that orbital fluctuations are slow on magnetic and electronic time scales < ps and act as a spatially-random orbital alloy. A thermally-driven critical concentration of isotropic Tb ions triggers the SR transition.

Hidden magnetism uncovered in a charge ordered bilayer kagome material ScV 6 Sn 6

Charge ordered kagome lattices have been demonstrated to be intriguing platforms for studying the intertwining of topology, correlation, and magnetism. The recently discovered charge ordered kagome material ScV 6 Sn 6 does not feature a magnetic groundstate or excitations, thus it is often regarded as a conventional paramagnet. Here, using advanced muon-spin rotation spectroscopy, we uncover an unexpected hidden magnetism of the charge order. We observe an enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place within the charge ordered state. More importantly, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. Taken together with the hidden magnetism found in AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) and FeGe kagome systems, our results suggest ubiqitous time-reversal symmetry-breaking in charge ordered kagome lattices.

Large asymmetric anomalous Nernst effect in the antiferromagnet SrIr 0.8 Sn 0.2 O 3

A large anomalous Nernst effect is essential for thermoelectric energy-harvesting in the transverse geometry without external magnetic field. It's often connected with anomalous Hall effect, especially when electronic Berry curvature is believed to be the driving force. This approach implicitly assumes the same symmetry for the Nernst and Hall coefficients, which is however not necessarily true. Here we report a large anomalous Nernst effect in antiferromagnetic SrIr 0.8 Sn 0.2 O 3 that defies the antisymmetric constraint on the anomalous Hall effect imposed by the Onsager reciprocal relation. The observed spontaneous Nernst thermopower quickly reaches the sub-μV/K level below the Néel transition around 250 K, which is comparable with many topological antiferromagnetic semimetals and far excels other magnetic oxides. Our analysis indicates that the coexistence of significant symmetric and antisymmetric contributions plays a key role, pointing to the importance of extracting both contributions and a new pathway to enhanced anomalous Nernst effect for transverse thermoelectrics.

Spin structure and dynamics of the topological semimetal Co 3 Sn 2-x In x S 2

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), typically observed in ferromagnetic (FM) metals with broken time-reversal symmetry, depends on electronic and magnetic properties. In Co 3 Sn 2-x In x S 2 , a giant AHE has been attributed to Berry curvature associated with the FM Weyl semimetal phase, yet recent studies report complicated magnetism. We use neutron scattering to determine the spin dynamics and structures as a function of x and provide a microscopic understanding of the AHE and magnetism interplay. Spin gap and stiffness indicate a contribution from Weyl fermions consistent with the AHE. The magnetic structure evolves from c-axis ferromagnetism at x = 0 to a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with reduced c-axis moment and in-plane AFM order at x = 0.12 and further reduced c-axis FM moment at x = 0.3. Since noncollinear spins can induce non-zero Berry curvature in real space acting as a fictitious magnetic field, our results revealed another AHE contribution, establishing the impact of magnetism on transport.

Incommensurate charge-stripe correlations in the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5–x Sn x

The class of AV 3 Sb 5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) kagome metals hosts unconventional charge density wave states seemingly intertwined with their low temperature superconducting phases. The nature of the coupling between these two states and the potential presence of nearby, competing charge instabilities however remain open questions. This phenomenology is strikingly highlighted by the formation of two ‘domes’ in the superconducting transition temperature upon hole-doping CsV 3 Sb 5 . Here we track the evolution of charge correlations upon the suppression of long-range charge density wave order in the first dome and into the second of the hole-doped kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5–x Sn x . Initially, hole-doping drives interlayer charge correlations to become short-ranged with their periodicity diminished along the interlayer direction. Beyond the peak of the first superconducting dome, the parent charge density wave state vanishes and incommensurate, quasi-1D charge correlations are stabilized in its place. These competing, unidirectional charge correlations demonstrate an inherent electronic rotational symmetry breaking in CsV 3 Sb 5 , and reveal a complex landscape of charge correlations within its electronic phase diagram. Our data suggest an inherent 2k ƒ charge instability and competing charge orders in the AV 3 Sb 5 class of kagome superconductors.

Low-temperature magnetic crossover in the topological kagome magnet TbMn 6 Sn 6

Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and materials science, of which kagome magnets appear as a highly promising platform. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the recently identified topological kagome system TbMn6 S n 6 using muon spin rotation, combined with local field analysis and neutron diffraction. Our studies identify an out-of-plane ferrimagnetic structure with slow magnetic fluctuations which exhibit a critical slowing down below $T^{*}_{C1}$ ≃ 120 K and finally freeze into static patches with ideal out-of-plane order below T C1 ≃ 20 K. We further show that hydrostatic pressure of 2.1 GPa stabilises the static out-of-plane topological ferrimagnetic ground state in the whole volume of the sample. Therefore the exciting perspective arises of a magnetically-induced topological system whose magnetism can be controlled through external parameters. The present results will stimulate theoretical investigations to obtain a microscopic understanding of the relation between the low-temperature volume-wise magnetic evolution of the static c-axis ferrimagnetic patches and the topological electronic properties in TbMn 6 Sn 6 .
