Fiber optic transmission line stabilization apparatus and method

A reference signal of RF frequency modulates a 0.85 micrometer wavelength optical transmitter. The output of which passes through a first optical filter and a voltage-controller phase shifter. The output of the phase shifter is provided to the fiber optic transmission line. At the receiving end of the transmission line, the signal is demodulated and used to modulate a 1.06 micrometer optical transmitter. The signal from the transmitter is provided to the fiber optic transmission line and passes through the voltage-controlled phase shifter to a phase error detector. The phase of the modulation of the 1.06 micrometer wavelength signal is compared to the phase of the reference signal by the phase error detector. A phase control signal related to the phase difference is provided to the voltage controlled phase shifter which alters the phase of both optical signals until a predetermined phase relationship between modulation on the 1.06 micrometer signal and the reference signal is obtained.

Electric fields and field-aligned currents in polar regions of the solar corona: 3-D MHD consideration

The calculation of the solar rotation electro-dynamical effects in the near-the-Sun solar wind seems more convenient from the non-inertial corotating reference frame. This implies some modification of the 3-D MHD equations generally on the base of the General Theory of Relativity. The paper deals with the search of stationary (in corotating non-inertial reference frame) solutions of the modified 3-D MHD equations for the in near-the-Sun high latitude sub-alfvenic solar wind. The solution is obtained requiring electric fields and field-aligned electric currents in the high latitude near-the-Sun solar wind. Various scenario are explored self-consistently via a number of numerical experiments. The analogy with the high latitude Earth's magnetosphere is used for the interpretation of the results. Possible observational manifestations are discussed.

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of laminated elastic structures

This final technical report contains three parts: Part 1 deals with the 2-D shell theory and its element formulation and applications. Part 2 deals with the 3-D degenerated element. These two parts constitute the two major tasks that were completed under the grant. Another related topic that was initiated during the present investigation is the development of a nonlinear material model. This topic is briefly discussed in Part 3. To make each part self-contained, conclusions and references are included in each part. In the interest of brevity, the discussions presented are relatively brief. The details and additional topics are described in the references cited.

Advanced Modeling of Micromirror Devices

The flexure-beam micromirror device (FBMD) is a phase only piston style spatial light modulator demonstrating properties which can be used for phase adaptive corrective optics. This paper presents a complete study of a square FBMD, from advanced model development through final device testing and model verification. The model relates the electrical and mechanical properties of the device by equating the electrostatic force of a parallel-plate capacitor with the counter-acting spring force of the device's support flexures. The capacitor solution is derived via the Schwartz-Christoffel transformation such that the final solution accounts for non-ideal electric fields. The complete model describes the behavior of any piston-style device, given its design geometry and material properties. It includes operational parameters such as drive frequency and temperature, as well as fringing effects, mirror surface deformations, and cross-talk from neighboring devices. The steps taken to develop this model can be applied to other micromirrors, such as the cantilever and torsion-beam designs, to produce an advanced model for any given device. The micromirror devices studied in this paper were commercially fabricated in a surface micromachining process. A microscope-based laser interferometer is used to test the device in which a beam reflected from the device modulates a fixed reference beam. The mirror displacement is determined from the relative phase which generates a continuous set of data for each selected position on the mirror surface. Plots of this data describe the localized deflection as a function of drive voltage.

Laser-Directed Ranging System Implementing Single Camera System for Telerobotics Applications

The invention relates generally to systems for determining the range of an object from a reference point and, in one embodiment, to laser-directed ranging systems useful in telerobotics applications. Digital processing techniques are employed which minimize the complexity and cost of the hardware and software for processing range calculations, thereby enhancing the commercial attractiveness of the system for use in relatively low-cost robotic systems. The system includes a video camera for generating images of the target, image digitizing circuitry, and an associated frame grabber circuit. The circuit first captures one of the pairs of stereo video images of the target, and then captures a second video image of the target as it is partly illuminated by the light beam, suitably generated by a laser. The two video images, taken sufficiently close together in time to minimize camera and scene motion, are converted to digital images and then compared. Common pixels are eliminated, leaving only a digital image of the laser-illuminated spot on the target. Mw centroid of the laser illuminated spot is dm obtained and compared with a predetermined reference point, predetermined by design or calibration, which represents the coordinate at the focal plane of the laser illumination at infinite range. Preferably, the laser and camera are mounted on a servo-driven platform which can be oriented to direct the camera and the laser toward the target. In one embodiment the platform is positioned in response to movement of the operator's head. Position and orientation sensors are used to monitor head movement. The disparity between the digital image of the laser spot and the reference point is calculated for determining range to the target. Commercial applications for the system relate to active range-determination systems, such as those used with robotic systems in which it is necessary to determine the, range to a workpiece or object to be grasped or acted upon by a robot arm end-effector in response to commands generated by an operator. In one embodiment, the system provides a real-time image of the target for the operator as the robot approaches the object. The system is also adapted for use in virtual reality systems in which a remote object or workpiece is to be acted upon by a remote robot arm or other mechanism controlled by an operator.

Method for determining shear direction using liquid crystal coatings

A method is provided for determining shear direction wherein a beam of white light is directed onto the surface of a liquid crystal coating to cause the white light to be dispersed (reflected) from the surface in a spectrum having bands of different colors in a fixed spatial 2 (angular) sequence. The system is calibrated by locating an observer, e.g., a video and movie camera, such that a particular color band (preferably at or near the center of the reflected spectrum) is observed to thereby provide a reference color band. Because the application of shear causes either clockwise or counterclockwise rotation of the reflected spectrum dependent on the direction of the shear, a determination is then made of the reflected color band observed by the observer when the surface of the liquid crystal is subjected to shear to thereby determine the direction of the shear based on the directional (rotation) relation of the observed color band with respect to the reference color band in the spatial sequence of color bands.

The postflight trajectory is presented for the Apollo/Saturn V AS-511 spent S-IVB/IU stage from CSM separation to lunar impact. The lunar impact coordinates and conditions are included. Some combinations of small S-IVB/IU stage related forces are hypothesized to account for a significant angular momentum increase and small translational perturbations. Trajectory dependent parameters in geocentric and selenocentric inertial coordinates (PACSS4, reference epoch at mean nearest Besselian year) module separation to lunar impact. Data relating to the tracking residuals (observed minus model calculated (O-C)) are also given for the best-estimate trajectory.

Rate constant for the reaction of OH with CH3CCl2F (HCFC-141b) determined by relative rate measurements with CH4 and CH3CCl3

Determination of accurate rate constants for OH abstraction is of great importance for the calculation of lifetimes for HCFCs and their impact on the atmosphere. For HCFC-141b there has been some disagreement in the literature for absolute measurements of this rate constant. In the present work rate constant ratios for HCFC-141b were measured at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range of 298-358 K, with CH4 and CH3CCl3 as reference gases. Ozone was photolyzed at 254 nm in the presence of water vapor to produce OH radicals. Relative depletions of 141b and the reference gases were measured by FTIR. Arrhenius expressions for 141b were derived from each reference gas and found to be in good agreement with each other. The combined expression for HCFC-141b which we recommend is 1.4 x 10 exp -12 exp(-1630/T) with k at 298 K being 5.9 x 10 exp -15 cu cm/molec-s. This value is in excellent agreement with the JPL 92-20 recommendation.

A novel multistage estimation of the signal parameters of a possibly data-modulated sinusoid under very high dynamics

A novel multistage estimation scheme is presented for estimating the parameters of a received carrier signal possibly phase-modulated by unknown data, and experiencing very high Doppler, Doppler rate, etc. Such a situation arises, for example, in the case of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) where the signal parameters are directly related to the position, velocity, acceleration and jerk of the GPS receiver. In the proposed multistage scheme, the first stage estimator operates as a coarse estimator resulting in higher rms estimation errors but with a relatively small probability of the frequency estimation error exceeding one-half of the sampling frequency (an event termed cycle slip). The second state of the estimator operates on the error signal available from the first stage, refining the overall estimates, and in the process also reduces the number of cycle slips. The first stage algorithm is selected to be a modified least squares algorithm operating upon the differential signal model and referred to as differential least squares. This estimation stage provides relatively coarse estimates of the frequency and its derivatives. The second algorithm is simply an extended Kalman filter which also yields the estimate of the phase along with a more refined estimate of frequency as well. A major advantage of the proposed algorithm is a reduction in the threshold on received carrier power-to-noise power spectral density ratio as compared to the threshold achievable by either of these algorithms alone. In fact, it appears from the simulations that for the case of an unmodulated carrier, the proposed scheme achieves the same threshold as for an almost exact and computationally intensive implementation of the maximum likelihood estimator.

Floating reference frames for flexible spacecraft

Floating reference frames which move with the flexible body under dynamic analysis offer the advantages of a linear vibration analysis in the presence of large system rotations. When the deformations of an elastic continuum are expanded in terms of the free-free modes on an unconstrained system, the rigid body modes are found to be fixed in a reference frame called the Tisserand frame, with respect to which the relative momentum is zero. This result also guarantees the independence of small variations of frame motions and coordinates for all modes with nonzero natural frequencies, a condition which can greatly simplify the formulation of equations of motion. A Modified Tisserand Constraint is introduced in order to define a floating reference frame with similar properties for an elastic body which contains spinning rotors.

Analysis of ground tests of a microwave, earth-occultation, pressure-reference-level system.

A two-satellite, microwave, earth-occultation system can supplement an infrared sensor by providing an accurate altitude reference that will serve to fix, as a function of height, the derived temperature profile of the infrared sounder. The results of ground tests made in Hawaii to estimate the likely effects of scintillation and fading on an occultation system are described. It was found that the microwave signal suffered periods of intense fading; extensive computer analyses of the data were performed in which aircraft-generated refractivity profiles were subjected to ray tracing. Results of these analyses indicate that the probable cause of the observed fading was multipath, a low-altitude phenomenon usually attributed to water vapor inhomogeneities. It is maintained that multipath will therefore have minimal effect on the pressure-reference microwave occultation system, which would operate at a relatively high closest-approach altitude (about 8 km).

New techniques in television to provide research in three-dimensional real-time or near real-time imagery and reduced cost systems for teleconferencing and educational uses, part 1

The results are presented of a continuing research and development program the objective of which is to develop a reduced bandwidth television system and a technique for television transmission of holograms. The result of the former is a variable frame rate television system, the operation of which was demonstrated for both black-and-white and color signals. This system employs a novel combination of the inexpensive mass storage capacity of a magnetic disc with the reliability of a digital system for time expansion and compression. Also reported are the results of a theoretical analysis and preliminary feasibility experiment of an innovative system for television transmission of holograms using relatively conventional TV equipment along with a phase modulated reference wave for production of the original interference pattern.

Determination of launch conditions for Spacelab satisfying the constraints of an absorption spectroscopy project

The conditions for absorption spectroscopy of the homosphere between 20 and 100 km from a space platform such as Spacelab are considered. Using nominal orbital elements, and taking launch data and time as parameters of the problem, formula were established that give the data necessary for determining the flight plan. The geographical coordinates of the tangential points of the solar illumination boundaries were also calculated. It is shown that the latitude coverage of the observation is closely related to launch conditions. Expressions for the pointing angles referred to an instantaneous terrestrial trihedron are given. These angular elements are needed to determine the real pointing angles in a reference system linked to Spacelab.
