Evaluating a Transition-jump System for the Fermilab Main Injector Using Xsuite

We describe an Xsuite simulation framework for the Fermilab Main Injector (MI) along with an evaluation of transition-crossing behaviors in the accelerator. In particular, we studied the introduction of quadrupole magnets into the lattice as part of a transition-jump system that will be implemented through the $2^{nd}$ Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II). Simulated beam losses spurred by transition-induced instabilities were assessed under several systematic effects, including MI quad errors, magnet-to-magnet variability in the jump magnets, power-supply errors, and timing jitter.

Mu2e resonant extraction regulation system simulation in delivery ring

Mu2e is an upcoming experiment at Fermilab that relies on the slowly extracted 8 GeV proton beam from the Delivery Ring. The experiment imposes strong requirements on the spill uniformity. To address these requirements, the fast spill regulations system is being developed and commissioned. To inform this development and optimize the system performance we are carrying out the detailed simulations of the regulation process. The simulation includes the effect of six harmonic sextupoles that excite the third-integer resonance and three fast ramping quadrupoles that drive the horizontal tune to 29/3. The components of spill regulation system are designed to mitigate long-term drifts in the beam, ensuring stable operation over extended timescales, as well as addresses rapid variations within single spill. In this study, we review the regulation system design, simulation of the slow regulation, and the fast regulation PID regulation to curtail random variations in the extraction rate that could occur within a single spill.

Compact, Achromatic Non-scaling FFAG Accelerator for HEP, Commercial and Medical Applications (CRADA FRA-2008-0005 Final Report)

Proton and light-ion accelerators have many research and medical applications, but the current state of technology in accelerators severely limits their widespread use: (1) synchrotrons have an intrinsic low duty cycle and become quite large for light ions; and (2) cyclotrons do not have energy variability and require complex superconducting magnets for high energy. A new concept in non-scaling Fixed-Field Alternating-Gradient (FFAGs) has been invented that incorporates both the energy variability of the synchrotron and the high duty cycle of the cyclotron. The concept uses normal-conducting, combined-function magnets that apply only constant (dipole) and linear-gradient (quadrupole) fields to stabilize the accelerator. This project will develop an optimized design for a new non-scaling and cost-effective innovation in FFAG accelerators. The accelerator design will have optics that can stably accelerate protons to 250 MeV (or higher) and carbon ions to =200 MeV, an energy considered ideal for radiation therapy. Phase I will optimize, fully simulate, and demonstrate the feasibility of this accelerator. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The fixed-field acceleration concept should eliminate some of the most pronounced technical difficulties, expense, maintenance, and required expertise faced in conventional proton and light-ion accelerators. In addition to the application for high energy physics, these accelerators should have application in cancer treatment, radiopharmaceuticals, and medical isotope production, and materials science.

HEX 2-piece ID Absorber: Steady and Transient Thermal FEA

Radiation fans from Insertion Devices and Bending Magnets are “trimmed” by various water-cooled absorbers located strategically downstream of those sources. Mostly, the absorber surfaces onto which power is deposited are constructed from Glidcop Al-15 (rarely OFHC copper). On the basis of Tech Note 327 a re-design for improved thermal performance has evolved to a two-piece ID Absorber configuration; one between dipole chamber and quadrupole, another after the sextupole, each with reduced incident angle. The ring’s Active Interlock (AI) system protects against overheating by disabling mis-steered beam within an allotted time. SRP (Synchrotron Radiation Protection) protocol has a limiting maximum allowable temperature of 100*C at any point when subject to mis-steered beam for a fixed period before AI activation. After 0.2 msec, radiation exceeding +/- 0.5mm offset and +/- 0.25 mrad angular error from the HEX SCW will trip in fault. AI specification allows 1.0 msec to fully dump the electron beam.

Spherical Aberrations - Final Focus and Solenoid Scans

Conclusions: Spherical aberrations in solenoids are unavoidable and problematic whenever the beam is focused; It may be possible to include a spherical aberration correction to the analysis of a solenoid scan in the manner described above although more accurate 2D PIC models should be studied to determine the accuracy of the very simple model used above. This correction would have to be iterated as the beam size in the solenoid is iterated; A quadrupole triplet final focus would not have aberrations (preliminary analysis shows improvement in spot size, very difficult to tune).

Aerial Crosspolarized NQR-NMR: Buried Explosive Detection From a Safe Distance

Nuclear quadrupole resonance is a non-destructive detection and inspection technique with potential as a non-destructive test (NDT) tool. Establishment of the capability opens the door to its use in furthering the mission of the labs. There are many possible uses of the capability: explosive detection and stress/strain detection in epoxies are two of the more obvious and are the main results of this work. Enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improvements in the acquisition time of the experiment were key focuses of this work. These were achieved by combing special spin-lock pulse sequences with cross-polarization (CP) schemes to improve the signals with shorter acquisition times. A novel rotating magnetic field device was created to facilitate CP in the field. Implementation of these schemes provided a significant reduction in SNR/time.

Muon Collider Pulsed Synchrotron Parameters

I work out approximate parameters for an acceleration scenario from 63 GeV to 1500 GeV using pulsed synchrotrons. I used parameters arrived at for MAP design studies. I ignore straight lengths for quadrupoles and inter-magnet spacing. Acceleration from 63 GeV to 750 GeV will be accomplished using two machines in a common tunnel: a non-hybrid pulsed synchrotron from 63 GeV to an intermediate energy, followed by a hybrid pulsed synchrotron to 750 GeV. Acceleration to 1500 GeV will be accomplished with a hybrid pulsed synchrotron. All acceleration is accomplished with 1300 MHz RF.

LANL-UW Collaboration on LC-QTOF Datasets (Annual Report)

Prior to the application of non-targeted chemometric techniques (i.e., Fisher ratio analysis), pre-processing steps must be carried out on the data collected using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight (LC-QTOF) mass spectrometry. Data compression is the most important pre-processing step due to the vast number of high-resolution mass channels (m/z; 0.0001 Da) collected. Our first approach was to bin the mass spectral dimension to 0.01 Da; however, this approach was computationally expensive and did not preserve the high-resolution data.

Achromat Design for Multi-Pulse Test Line

This note describes the design of a 90° achromatic bend on DARHT Axis 2 to support multi-pulse target studies. The achromatic bend consists of two 45° dipole magnets with a focusing quadrupole centered between the dipoles. The optical design of the achromat is described followed by a discussion of the sensitivity to space charge and variations in the beam energy. The preliminary design of the magnets is then described with a description of the electro-mechanical parameters.

Parallel Simulation of Beam Dynamics in Particle Accelerators [Slides]

LW3D was used to explore the expected CSR from an undulator-based diagnostic using a first-principles approach. It was also used for comparison with an analytic Green-function approach. LW3D was extended to model transport systems involving dipoles and quadrupoles. It was used to explore the radiation produced in a 4-dipole bunch compressor. Radiation ahead of the electron bunch at the beamline exit was shown to be associated with wavefronts produced in upstream dipoles overtaking the bunch.

Eddy current studies for the beam screen of the Electron-Ion Collider hadron storage ring superconducting magnets

A copper-clad stainless steel beam screen will be installed in each of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) superconducting (SC) magnets used for making the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). Eddy currents are induced within conductors to oppose a changing magnetic flux. Eddy currents will appear on the EIC HSR beam screens during ramp up and ramp down, after a magnet quenches and when reversing the polarity of the γ transition jump quadrupoles during γ transition crossing. This study evaluates the magnitude of the eddy currents, the temperature increase due to Joule heating and the stress at the beam screens from the eddy-current induced force.

Complex-Valued Signal Denoising and Bayesian Optimization for Detection of Synthetic Opioids [Slides]

Overseas manufacturers ship synthetic opioids into the United States through international mail. Synthetic opioids are largely responsible for the overdose crisis in the United States. Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) spectroscopy is a chemical analysis technique used for detection. The ultimate goal is to develop a technology capable of detecting the presence of synthetic opioids in unopened packages using NQR spectroscopy.

Electron Cloud Simulations for the Electron-Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Laboratory

For high-intensity circular accelerators and storage rings, if the secondary electron emission yield (SEY) of the vacuum chamber surfaces is high, an EC (Electron Cloud) could build up with the passage of the circulating beam. The presence of EC can strongly affect the beam quality, such as transverse instabilities, transverse emittance growth, and beam loss. Furthermore, the heat load from EC can exceed the available cryogenic capability. For the RHIC superconducting (SC) arc magnets, to be used for the hadron storage ring of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), the dynamic heat load budget is 0.5 W/m to the 4.5 K stainless steel beam pipe. This can limit the maximum beam bunches or intensity of the EIC, hence diminishing the luminosity provided by the EIC. The EC has affected the beam instability and significantly contributed to cryogenic heat load in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Positron storage rings for which ECs have been a critical factor in the design and performance include KEKB in Japan and EC buildup remains one of the concerns for future high-intensity accelerators design. EC considerations have driven the SuperKEKB collider design and the positron damping ring for the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). The LHC luminosity upgrade is contingent on reducing the bunch spacing to 25 ns; at this bunch spacing, severe EC buildup has been observed. The success of the upgrade is likely contingent on limiting EC buildup. To study the EC heat load, we did some EC simulations with PyECLOUD code for the dipole, quadrupole, sextupole magnets, and the warm (drift) section of the EIC hadron storage ring. PyECLOUD is an EC simulation code developed by CERN. The code has been validated and used to study EC in the LHC, SPS, and PS. To eliminate EC buildup, the sources of electrons must be minimized. First, we will reduce the production of electrons due to residual gas ionization by specifying the maximum gas density, which requires a vacuum chamber with low electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) yields and a sufficient (preferably distributed) pumping speed. Second, we should reduce the secondary electrons with a lower secondary electron yield (SEY) material.

Measuring the Radial Component of the Magnetic Field in the Muon g-2 Experiment

A leading systematic error in the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) analysis at Muon g-2 is the presence of radial magnetic fields because they cause indistinguishable effects to the muon spin precession plane from a true EDM measurement. Measuring a non-zero EDM would place a constraint in CP-violation, indicating new physics beyond the Standard Model. The radial field is composed of an applied radial field by the surface correction coils (SCC) and a background radial field due to imperfections in the materials and alignment of magnetic elements. We determine an optimal SCC setting that best minimizes the background radial field by performing a scan at different electro-static quadrupole settings and studying its relation with the vertical beam position and applied radial field. In this talk I will present our results and describe our efforts to design an apparatus outfitted with Hall probes and tilt sensors to directly measure the radial magnetic field as a function of az imuth.
