Investigation of a generator system for generating electrical power, to supply directly to the public network, using a windmill

A windpowered generator system is described which uses a windmill to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy for a three phase (network) voltage of constant amplitude and frequency. The generator system controls the windmill by the number of revolutions so that the power drawn from the wind for a given wind velocity is maximum. A generator revolution which is proportional to wind velocity is achieved. The stator of the generator is linked directly to the network and a feed converter at the rotor takes care of constant voltage and frequency at the stator.

Publication of the maps of Tenke and Manono (Zaire) from LANDSAT data

The collection of cartographic data on Zaire up to the present time was based on aerial reconnaissance. This approach is very expensive if repetitive coverage is required in such a large country. The integration with the LANDSAT program among the data collection systems improves the mapping efforts substantially.

LANDSAT technology transfer to the private and public sectors through community colleges and other locally available institutions

Major first year accomplishments are summarized and plans are provided for the next 12-month period for a program established by NASA with the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan to investigate methods of making LANDSAT technology readily available to a broader set of private sector firms through local community colleges. The program applies a network where the major participants are NASA, university or research institutes, community colleges, and obtain hands-on training in LANDSAT data analysis techniques, using a desk-top, interactive remote analysis station which communicates with a central computing facility via telephone line, and provides for generation of land cover maps and data products via remote command.

Thermal control - Heat buses will operate like a public utility

Active thermal control for the NASA space station concept requires long life heat rejection, highly versatile thermal transport, and efficient system integration. By a significant margin, the heat radiator will be the largest and most exposed portion of the space station thermal system. Transport requirements encompass the collection and movement of thermal energy from the space station's heat sources to the radiator heat sink at required temperature levels. In a decentralized thermal system, each space station module would collect and reject all of the waste heat generated, thereby requiring no module interconnections. This scheme does not, however, allow waste heat from one module to be used by another. In a centralized system, heat must be transported across module boundaries. A high capacity monogroove heat pipe has been developed to simplify space radiators design and operation.

Cumulative reports and publications through 31 December 1983

All reports for the calendar years 1975 through December 1983 are listed by author. Since ICASE reports are intended to be preprints of articles for journals and conference proceedings, the published reference is included when available. Thirteen older journal and conference proceedings references are included as well as five additional reports by ICASE personnel. Major categories of research covered include: (1) numerical methods, with particular emphasis on the development and analysis of basic algorithms; (2) computational problems in engineering and the physical sciences, particularly fluid dynamics, acoustics, structural analysis, and chemistry; and (3) computer systems and software, especially vector and parallel computers, microcomputers, and data management.
