Plutonium Age Dating Interlaboratory Comparison Overview - Project Design, Sample Preparation, and Results [Slides]

Project Design – How do you validate measured Pu model age? There are no certified reference materials (CRMs) that are certified for Pu model age or purification dates. There are no Am isotopic CRMs - IRMM 0243 243 Am spike has 241 Am impurity that can be used; Community working toward "consensus ages." This project executed and evaluated results from a Pu age dating interlaboratory comparison with six IAEA NWAL participant laboratories. It also ran the first quality control evaluation of single-picogram to sub-picogram scale interlaboratory 241 Am assay measurements from cotton swipe matrices. Results are promising, with a majority of 241 Am/ 241 Pu model age results agree to within 1 to 4 years. The calculated 241 Am assay results show interlaboratory variability, expanded percent uncertainties on calculated consensus 241 Am concentrations were: PuAge-S1 = 3.1 %, PuAge-S2 = 23 %, and PuAge-S3 = 26 %. Data can be used to investigate laboratory methods and improve precision and accuracy of 241 Pu and 241 Am assay for future campaigns.

LLNL International Working Group on Gamma Spectrometry - Preparation of IDB Dataset [Slides]

The spectral information and associated metadata, including source information, detector setup, and shielding configuration is described in human readable, comma-separated text files (csv). Six csv files are associated with each material type and include the following information (where [Isotope] is U, Pu, and MOX): [Isotope]_measurement_metadata Metadata of the measurement configuration, including material composition at time of acquisition (decay corrected from certificate date). Data that is unique to a measurement configuration e.g. detector geometry, source-detector distance, analyzer and other electronics used, attenuating materials are provided in this file. [Isotope]_spectrum_metadata The information that is unique to the spectrum. This includes detector specifications (e.g. date of acquisition, number of channels, gain (keV/channel), energy range, real and live time, full width half-maximum (FWHM) of the 186 or 208 peak for uranium or plutonium measurements, respectively. [Isotope]_source_metadata The source material used for the measurement, this includes the ratio and uncertainties of isotopes present and processing information of the material. In addition, the certificate information for the source material is listed. [Isotope]_spectrum_counts_metadata The counts per channel for each spectrum. This data is linked via the UID.spectrum index to the measurement_metadata file. [Isotope]_spectrum_checksum_metadata The MD5 checksum for the original spectrum file. This data is linked via the UID.spectrum index to the measurement_metadata file. This information is provided to prevent duplication of entries in the database. [Isotope]_provenance Details on the csv data provider, including laboratory and contract information.

Federal Automotive Statisical Tool: FAST Changes & Data Call Preparation (INTERFUEL - September 2023) [Slides]

This presentation presents an overview of and timeline for coming changes to how federal agencies with motor vehicles will submit required information about the motor vehicles, fueling centers, and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) inventory through the Federal Automotive Statistical Tool (FAST). The presentation provides information on changes throughout the FAST system as well as changes planned for implementation in FY 2023 and later. This presentation is intended for delivery via WebEx/GoToMeeting at the September 13, 2023 meeting of the DOE-sponsored INTERFUEL working group. FAST is a web-based information management tool developed and maintained by Idaho National Laboratory and funded by GSA's Office of Government-wide Policy and DOE's Federal Energy Management Program.

Preparing Underrepresented Minorities for STEM Careers in Energy

The purpose of the grant was to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities and women in STEM disciplines that are critical for the energy industry. The grant was implemented by the Fort Valley State University’s (FVSU) Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP). FVSU-CDEP enrolled two cohorts of six academically talented freshmen students into its accelerated five-year 3+2 dual degree STEM program. In the 3+2 dual degree format, students enroll at FVSU for three years and earn bachelor’s degrees in biology, chemistry, or mathematics and transfer to a partnering university for two years to earn second bachelor’s degrees in engineering, geology/geophysics, or health physics. FVSU-CDEP partnering universities consist of Georgia Tech, Grand Valley State University, Penn State University, University of Alabama, University of Arkansas, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and the University of Texas-Austin. Cohort I enrolled at FVSU fall semester of 2017 and cohort II enrolled fall semester of 2020. All six of the students in cohort I earned bachelor’s STEM degrees at FVSU and transferred to a partnering university. Five of the six who transferred to a partnering university earned the second bachelor’s degree. One student transferred from a partnering university to a non-partner university to continue pursuit of the second degree. All students in cohort I had internships, attended professional meetings, and made presentations. Cohort II enrolled the fall-semester of 2020 in the midst of COVID epidemic. Cohort II was only funded for one year, 2020/2021. The DOE Office of Economic Impact and Diversity informed the PI that there would not be any funding for the fifth and final year (2021/2022) of the project. All six of the students in cohort II earned bachelor’s STEM degrees from FVSU and transferred to one of CDEP’s partnering universities. One of the students in cohort II graduate with an MS degree spring of 2023. Currently, four are pursuing graduate degrees at partnering universities and one withdrew from a partnering school because health reasons. Students in cohort II opportunities to participate in internship were negatively impact by the COVID epidemic (2020-2022). Of the 12 scholarship participants, 8 were females. Fifty percent of the males pursued second degrees in Engineering while only twenty-five percent of the females chose Engineering as their second degree.

Analysis of H-Canyon Process Tanks in Preparation of Consolidation and Blending for HALEU Fuels

High-Assay Low- Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fuels are being developed to support the replacement of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) fuels used in U.S. High-Performance Research Reactors (USHPRR) as well as advanced nuclear power reactor designs. The projected demand for HALEU far exceeds the supply and studies are underway to assess various options to partially mitigate the potential short supply. The H Canyon facility at the Savannah River Site (SRS) Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) containing 4.95% U-235 from the reprocessing of highly enriched foreign and domestic research reactor fuel for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) commercial power reactor market for several decades. The production of LEU at the H-Canyon facility can be readily transitioned to produce 19.75% HALEU solutions from the current separated inventory of purified HEU solutions in H-Canyon storage.
