Nonadiabatic dynamics with classical trajectories: The problem of an initial coherent superposition of electronic states

Advances in coherent light sources and development of pump–probe techniques in recent decades have opened the way to study electronic motion in its natural time scale. When an ultrashort laser pulse interacts with a molecular target, a coherent superposition of electronic states is created and the triggered electron dynamics is coupled to the nuclear motion. A natural and computationally efficient choice to simulate this correlated dynamics is a trajectory-based method where the quantum-mechanical electronic evolution is coupled to a classical-like nuclear dynamics. These methods must approximate the initial correlated electron–nuclear state by associating an initial electronic wavefunction to each classical trajectory in the ensemble. Different possibilities exist that reproduce the initial populations of the exact molecular wavefunction when represented in a basis. We show that different choices yield different dynamics and explore the effect of this choice in Ehrenfest, surface hopping, and exact-factorization-based coupled-trajectory schemes in a one-dimensional two-electronic-state model system that can be solved numerically exactly. Furthermore, this work aims to clarify the problems that standard trajectory-based techniques might have when a coherent superposition of electronic states is created to initialize the dynamics, to discuss what properties and observables are affected by different choices of electronic initial conditions and to point out the importance of quantum-momentum-induced electronic transitions in coupled-trajectory schemes.

Dynamics of carrier injection through V-defects in long wavelength GaN LEDs

The efficiency of high-power operation of multiple quantum well (QW) light emitting diodes (LEDs) to a large degree depends on the realization of uniform hole distribution between the QWs. In long wavelength InGaN/GaN QW LEDs, the thermionic interwell hole transport is hindered by high GaN barriers. However, in polar LED structures, these barriers may be circumvented by the lateral hole injection via semipolar {$10\bar{1}1$} QWs that form on the facets of V-defects. The efficiency of such carrier transfer depends on the transport time since transport in the semipolar QWs is competed by recombination. In this work, we study the carrier transfer from the semipolar to polar QWs by time-resolved photoluminescence in long wavelength (green to red) LEDs. We find that the carrier transfer through the semipolar QWs is fast, a few tens of picoseconds with the estimated room temperature ambipolar diffusion coefficient of ∼5.5 cm 2 /s. With diffusion much faster than recombination, the hole transport from the p-side of the structure to the polar QWs should proceed without a substantial loss, contributing to the high efficiency of long wavelength GaN LEDs.

Iron dopant energy levels in β-Ga 2 O 3

The energetic positions of the two Fe dopant levels in the bandgap of β-Ga 2 O 3 are determined to be at 3.05(±0.05) and 3.85(±0.05) eV below the conduction band minimum from transmission measurements employing a sub-picosecond tunable ultraviolet laser radiation source. A further measurement of the quantum efficiency of photoelectron emission from the Fe:Ga 2 O 3 (010) photocathode is consistent with the obtained absorption data and a dominant optical phonon assisted Franck–Condon emission mechanism, while also providing an estimate of 100 ps for the conduction band electron lifetime.

Carrier diffusion in long wavelength InGaN quantum well LEDs after injection through V-defects

The efficiency of operation of GaN-based light emitting diodes (LEDs) to a large degree relies on realization of a uniform hole distribution between multiple quantum wells (QWs) of the active region. Since the direct thermionic transport between the QWs is inefficient, the hole injection through semipolar {$10\bar{1}1$} QWs that form on the facets of V-defects has been suggested as an alternative approach. However, for an efficient LED operation, the carrier distribution should be uniform not only vertically, between the QWs but also laterally, within individual QWs. In this work, the lateral carrier distribution in long wavelength InGaN/GaN QW LEDs is studied by the scanning near-field optical microscopy. The measurements have shown that emission is concentrated around the V-defect injectors. At high currents, the diffusion length of holes in polar QWs was found to be ∼0.6–1 μm and the hole diffusion coefficient ∼0.6 cm 2 /s. The obtained data should aid design of the V-defect injectors for a laterally uniform carrier distribution in the active region QWs.

Photoinduced band renormalization effects in the topological nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS

Out-of-equilibrium effects provide an elegant pathway for probing and understanding the underlying physics of topological materials. In particular, controlling electronic band structure properties using ultrafast optical pulses has shown promise for creating exotic states of matter. Of recent interest is band renormalization in Dirac and Weyl semimetals as it leads to direct physical observables through the enhancement of the effective mass or in the shift of resonant energies. Here, in this work, we provide experimental and theoretical signatures of photoinduced renormalization of the electronic band structure in the topological nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. Specifically, we show how the change in the transient reflectivity spectra under femtosecond optical excitations is induced by out-of-equilibrium effects that renormalize the kinetic energy of electrons. We associate the observed spectral features with an enhancement of the effective mass and to a redshift of the resonant frequency as a function of pump field strength. Finally, we show that the transient relaxation dynamics of the reflectivity is primarily an electronic effect with a negligible phononic contribution. Our study presents conclusive modifications of electronic properties in ZrSiS using ultrashort pulses and demonstrates the potential of this approach in creating photoinduced phases in topological quantum matter through an all-optical route.

Energy-valley-dependent charge transfer in few-layer transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures

The effect of the energy valley on interlayer charge transfer in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures is studied by transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory. First-principles calculations confirm that the Λ min valley in the conduction band of few-layer WSe 2 evolves from above its K valley in the monolayer (1L) to below it in 4L. Heterostructure samples of nL–WSe 2 /1L–MoS 2 , where n = 1,2,3, and 4, are obtained by mechanical exfoliation and dry transfer. Photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals a thickness-dependent WSe 2 band structure and efficient interlayer charge transfer. Transient absorption measurements show that the electron transfer time from the Λ min valley of 4L WSe 2 to the K valley of MoS 2 is on the order of 30 ps. This process is much slower than the K-K charge transfer in 1L/1L TMD heterostructures. Furthermore, the momentum-indirect interlayer excitons formed after charge transfer have lifetimes >1 ns.

Transient absorption measurements of excitonic dynamics in 3 R -MoS 2

The excitonic dynamics in MoS 2 monolayer, bilayer, and bulk flakes with different stacking orders, namely 3R and 2H, are investigated through transient absorption spectroscopy at room temperature. Samples are obtained by the mechanical exfoliation of bulk MoS 2 crystals with 3R and 2H stacking orders. Photoluminescence spectroscopy is performed to characterize and compare the samples. Time-resolved differential reflection measurements reveal that monolayer flakes exfoliated from the 3R and 2H crystals exhibit similar exciton lifetimes of a few picoseconds. However, the exciton lifetime in the 3R bilayer flake is approximately 85 ps, about twice as long as that in the 2H bilayer. This prolonged exciton lifetime is attributed to the reduction of the electron-hole wavefunction overlap in the 3R bilayer due to the built-in polarization. Similarly, in bulk 3R MoS 2 , the exciton lifetime is around 220 ps, approximately twice as long as those in bulk 2H MoS 2 . The extension of the exciton lifetime in 3R transition metal dichalcogenides could be advantageous for their applications in optoelectronic devices.

Stimulated Rayleigh Scattering Enhanced by a Longitudinal Plasma Mode in a Periodically Driven Dirac Semimetal Cd 3 As 2

Using broadband (12–45 THz) multi-terahertz spectroscopy, we show that stimulated Rayleigh scattering dominates the transient optical conductivity of cadmium arsenide, a Dirac semimetal, under an optical driving field at 30 THz. Here, the characteristic dispersive line shape with net optical gain is accounted for by optical transitions between light-induced Floquet subbands, strikingly enhanced by the longitudinal plasma mode. Stimulated Rayleigh scattering with an unprecedentedly large refractive index change may pave the way for slow light generation in conductive solids at room temperature.

Terahertz-Driven Local Dipolar Correlation in a Quantum Paraelectric

Light-induced ferroelectricity in quantum paraelectrics is a new avenue of achieving dynamic stabilization of hidden orders in quantum materials. In this Letter, we explore the possibility of driving a transient ferroelectric phase in the quantum paraelectric KTaO 3 via intense terahertz excitation of the soft mode. We observe a long-lived relaxation in the terahertz-driven second harmonic generation (SHG) signal that lasts up to 20 ps at 10 K, which may be attributed to light-induced ferroelectricity. Through analyzing the terahertz-induced coherent soft-mode oscillation and finding its hardening with fluence well described by a single-well potential, we demonstrate that intense terahertz pulses up to 500 kV=cm cannot drive a global ferroelectric phase in KTaO 3 . Instead, we find the unusual long-lived relaxation of the SHG signal comes from a terahertz-driven moderate dipolar correlation between the defect-induced local polar structures. We discuss the impact of our findings on current investigations of the terahertz-induced ferroelectric phase in quantum paraelectrics.

Long-Lived Population Inversion in Resonantly Driven Excitonic Antiferromagnet

Van der Waals magnets are an emerging material family for investigating light-matter interactions and spin-correlated excitations. Here, we report the discovery of a photo-induced state with a lifetime of 17 ps in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS 3 , which appears exclusively with resonant pumping at 1.476 eV in the antiferromagnetic state. Furthermore, the long-lived state comes with a negative photoconductivity, a characteristic optical response of population inversion. Our findings demonstrate a promising pathway to potentially achieve long-lived lasing at terahertz frequencies in reduced dimensions.

Photoinduced structural recovery dynamics of rare-earth nickelate thin films

Photoinduced structural dynamics of rare-earth nickelate thin films, NdNiO 3 and SmNiO 3 , grown on (001) oriented SrTiO 3 were studied using time-resolved x-ray diffraction. The evolution of the (002) Bragg peak was tracked following laser excitation. The recovery pathways were found to be strongly dependent on laser fluence for NdNiO 3 and distinct for the two rare-earth nickelates. The recovery of the (002) peak shifts was modeled using a one-dimensional thermal diffusion model which showed that the recovery processes are non-thermal at high fluences. For NdNiO 3 , the timescales for the recovery of the (002) peak shift were found to be closely related to Ni magnetism recovery, potentially indicating magneto-structural coupling. Moreover, the evolution of integrated intensity and full-width-half-maximum points towards the presence of a structural phase separation during recovery. In conclusion, our studies highlight structural recovery pathways in nickelates by comparing the distinct responses of the photoinduced metal-insulator transition in NdNiO 3 and SmNiO 3 .
