Speckle interferometry using fiber optic phase stepping

A system employing closed-loop phase-stepping is used to measure the out-of-plane deformation of a diffusely reflecting object. Optical fibers are used to provide reference and object beam illumination for a standard two-beam speckle interferometer, providing set-up flexibility and ease of alignment. Piezoelectric fiber-stretchers and a phase-measurement/servo system are used to provide highly accurate phase steps. Intensity data is captured with a charge-injection-device camera, and is converted into a phase map using a desktop computer. The closed-loop phase-stepping system provides 90 deg phase steps which are accurate to 0.02 deg, greatly improving this system relative to open-loop interferometers. The system is demonstrated on a speckle interferometer, measuring the rigid-body translation of a diffusely reflecting object with an accuracy + or - 10 deg, or roughly + or - 15 nanometers. This accuracy is achieved without the use of a pneumatically mounted optics table.

Laser interferometer micrometer system

Laser micrometer measures dimensions of precision gyro and gas bearing parts using the principle of measuring light phase changes rather than a direct fringe count. The system uses light beams to eliminate errors due to deformations and surface irregularities, and three interferometers.

Sinusoidal-pressure generator for testing dynamic pressure probes

Generator can produce sinusoidal pressures at frequencies from 300 to 5000 Hz and peak-to-peak amplitudes up to 5.6 lbs/sq in. Amplitude and phase-angle measurements made at various frequencies are compared with measurements from a piezoelectric transducer mounted flush with the resonant tube wall.

Laser vibration analyzer

Instrument system uses laser and optical heterodyne receiver to measure Doppler phase shifts produced on a laser beam by the deflection of the vibrating surface of a structure under test or in operation.

Interferometer using RF switching matrix

Radio frequency switching technique for single receiver and data processing channel to be used for phase movement measurement is discussed. Components of interferometer radio frequency unit, X-band receiver, and interferometer data processing unit are illustrated. Elimination of major measurement error source is described.

Partial reflections of radio waves from the lower ionosphere

The addition of phase difference measurements to partial reflection experiments is discussed, and some advantages of measuring electron density this way are pointed out. The additional information obtained reduces the requirement for an accurate predetermination of collision frequency. Calculations are also made to estimate the errors expected in partial-reflection experiments due to the assumption of Fresnel reflection and to the neglect of coupling between modes. In both cases, the errors are found to be of the same order as known errors in the measurements due to current instrumental limitations.

The oscillator strengths of the SO /A 3Pi/-/X 3Sigma-/ band systems.

The oscillator strengths for these SO transition band systems are calculated using RKR Franck-Condon factors and the radiative lifetime previously derived from electron-beam phase-shift measurements by Smith (1971). The SO transition concerned is of considerable astrophysical importance in the search for SO in the interstellar medium by means of space-based telescopes with monochromators since the transition probability is concentrated, as shown, in relatively few transitions from the ground state.

Development of techniques for advanced optical contamination measurement with internal reflection spectroscopy, phase 2, volume 2

Attenuated total reflectance spectra of individual contaminants in space simulation chambers are presented as well as spectra of mixtures and figures exhibiting the effects of film thickness on reflectance spectra. Detailed calibration spectra were made for three selected concentrations (film thickness) for two contaminants and for one concentration for all contaminants.

The minitrack tracking function description, volume 1

The treatment of tracking data by the Minitrack system is described from the transmission of the nominal 136-MHz radio beacon energy from a satellite and the reception of this signal by the interferometer network through the ultimate derivation of the direction cosines (the angular coordinates of the vector from the tracking station to the spacecraft) as a function of time. Descriptions of some of the lesser-known functions operating on the system, such as the computer preprocessing program, are included. A large part of the report is devoted to the preprocessor, which provides for the data compression, smoothing, calibration correction, and ambiguity resolution of the raw interferometer phase tracking measurements teletyped from each of the worldwide Minitrack tracking stations to the central computer facility at Goddard Space Flight Center. An extensive bibliography of Minitrack hardware and theory is presented.
