High-temperature ''hydrostatic'' extrusion

Quasi-fluids permit hydrostatic extrusion of solid materials. The use of sodium chloride, calcium fluoride, or glasses as quasi-fluids reduces handling, corrosion, and sealing problems, these materials successfully extrude steel, molybdenum, ceramics, calcium carbonate, and calcium oxide. This technique also permits fluid-to-fluid extrusion.

The Lunar Communications Relay Unit system design

Lunar Surface Exploration by Early Apollo Astronauts was limited by the range capabilities and configuration of the surface communications. To permit greater scientific yield from manned lunar exploration, it was necessary to provide improvements in crew mobility plus communications compatible with extended extravehicular activity. Expansion of EVA** and video communications capability was constrained by the requirement of interfacing with existing earth and lunar surface facilities, vehicle payload requirements, and crew operational considerations. Various trade-off s were conducted to permit rapid development of a feasible communication’s system which are described herein. The revision of the EVA mission profile necessitated establishment of new signal design parameters compatible with mobile and fixed site relay configurations. The design approach selected required strict discipline to enable integration of the electrical, mechanical, thermal and human factor fields. The resultant design of the Lunar Communications Relay Unit is a portable communications package to provide relay-to-earth of voice, data and color television from lunar surface locations far beyond the LM landing site and relay of ground voice to the EVA crew.

Meteoroid-bumper interactions program

An investigation has been made of the interaction of meteoroids with shielded structures. The interaction has been simulated by the impact of Lexan cylinders onto lead shields in order to provide the vaporous debris believed to be created by meteoroid impact on a space vehicle. Shock compression data for Lexan was determined. This, in combination with the known shock compression data for the lead shield, has permitted the definition of the initial high pressure states in the impacted projectile and shield. The debris from such impact events has been permitted to interact with aluminum main walls. The walls were chosen to be sufficiently large to be effectively infinite in diameter compared to the loaded area. The thickness of the wall and the spacing from the shield were varied to determine the effect of these parameters. In addition, the effect of having a body of water behind the wall has been assessed. Measurements of the stagnation pressure in the debris cloud have been made and correlated with the response of the main wall.

Peak axial-velocity decay with single- and multi-element nozzles

Jet peak-velocity decay data were obtained for a variety of circular and noncircular single-element and multi-element nozzles for application to externally-blown-flap (EBF) STOL aircraft. These data permit a rational approach, in terms of element type and element spacing, to nozzles designed to promote mixing of the jet exhaust with the surrounding air. Rapid mixing and the resulting lower axial jet velocity decreases the noise caused by the interaction of jet impingement on the flap assembly of EBF STOL aircraft. Empirical relationships are presented that permit the prediction of peak axial-velocity decay curves for a wide spectrum of mixer-type nozzles. The data are useful also in the design of ejector-type noise suppressors and for the suppression of VTOL downwash velocities caused by vertically oriented exhaust nozzles.

Interactive graphics system for IBM 1800 computer

A FORTRAN compatible software system that has been developed to provide an interactive graphics capability for the IBM 1800 computer is described. The interactive graphics hardware consists of a Hewlett-Packard 1300A cathode ray tube, Sanders photopen, digital to analog converters, pulse counter, and necessary interface. The hardware is available from IBM as several related RPQ's. The software developed permits the application programmer to use IBM 1800 FORTRAN to develop a display on the cathode ray tube which consists of one or more independent units called pictures. The software permits a great deal of flexibility in the manipulation of these pictures and allows the programmer to use the photopen to interact with the displayed data and make decisions based on information returned by the photopen.

Sounding rocket flight report, MUMP 9 and MUMP 10

The results of the launching of two-Marshall-University of Michigan Probes (MUMP 9 and MUMP 10), Nike-Tomahawk sounding rocket payloads, are summarized. The MUMP is similar to the thermosphere probe, an ejectable instrument package for studying the variability of the earth's atmospheric parameters. The MUMP 9 payload included an omegatron mass analyzer, a molecular fluorescence densitometer, a mini-tilty filter, and a lunar position sensor. This complement of instruments permitted the determination of the molecular nitrogen density and temperature in the altitude range from approximately 143 to 297 km over Wallops Island, Virginia, during January 1971. The MUMP 10 payload included an omegatron mass analyzer, an electron temperature probe, a cryogenic densitometer, and a solar position sensor. These instruments permitted the determination of the molecular nitrogen density and temperature and the charged particle density and temperature in the altitude range from approximately 145 to 290 km over Wallops Island during the afternoon preceding the MUMP 9 launch.

Pressure ramp programmer; IMBLMS Phase B4 Additional Tasks: Task 3.0 pressure ramp programmer

A pressure ramp programmer model was designed, fabricated and tested. This model, in conjunction with an automatic blood pressure monitor, automatically controls the pressure in the blood pressure monitor arterial cuff. The cuff pressurization cycle is designed to maximize accuracy and repeatability of blood pressure measurements. The key feature of this automatic cycle is rapid blood pressure cuff bleed down from an initial setting until systolic (diastolic) pressure is encountered followed by a short repressurization and slow bleed, long enough to permit accurate systolic (diastolic) pressure determination. The system includes a pressure reservoir which bleeds the cuff through a precision needle valve; a solenoid valve which permits rapid pressurization from the reservoir; and a pressure sensor which provides information for bleed rate and set point controls. Korotkoff sound signals from a microphone in the blood pressure cuff (not part of the system) provide decision information to the digital control system. The system completed a series of engineering tests using simulated Korotkoff sound inputs. The system performed successfully in all cases and was stable over an extended period of time.

A performance application study of a jet-flap helicopter rotor

A performance study was made of the application of a jet-flap to a reaction-drive rotor for a heavy-lift helicopter mission and for a high-speed-helicopter maneuverability (200 knots, 2g) mission. The results of the study are as follows: As a result of the increase in maximum airfoil lift coefficient achieved by the jet-flap, rotor solidity is reduced with the jet-flap to approximately 59% of a nonjet-flap rotor. As a result of the saving in rotor solidity, and hence in rotor weight, the jet-flap configuration had a 21% higher productivity than a nonjet-flap configuration. Of the three propulsion systems studied utilizing a jet-flap (hot cycle, warm cycle, cold cycle) the hot cycle gave the largest increase in productivity. The 200 knot 2g mission is performed best with a warm cycle propulsion system. The jet-flap permits designing for a rotor blade loading coefficient C sub T/sigma = .170 at 2g without encountering blade stall. The jet-flap rotor permits a 200 knot 2g maneuver without suffering the penalty of an unreasonable rotor solidity that would be required by a nonjet-flap rotor.

Study of the application of advanced technologies to long-range transport aircraft. Volume 2: Research and development requirements

Investigations were conducted to evaluate the relative benefits attainable through the exploitation of advanced technologies and to identify future research and development efforts required to permit the application of selected technologies to transport aircraft entering commercial operation in 1985. Results show that technology advances, particularly in the areas of composite materials, supercritical aerodynamics, and active control systems, will permit the development of long-range, high-payload commercial transports operating at high-subsonic speeds with direct operating costs lower than those of current aircraft. These advanced transports also achieve lower noise levels and lower engine pollutant emissions than current transports. Research and development efforts, including analytical investigations, laboratory test programs, and flight test programs, are required in essentially all technology areas to achieve the potential technology benefits.

Production of fibers by a floating zone fiber drawing technique

A CO2 laser heated, floating zone fiber growth process was developed. The resulting Al2O3 fibers exhibited the high room temperature strengths for large diameter fibers as well as high specific creep rupture strengths observed at 1093 C and 1316 C (2000 F and 2400 F). Single crystal fibers of TiC and Y2O3 were also grown. An optical system was developed to focus four CO2 laser beams onto the surface of a feed rod permitting the formation of highly controllable molten zones. The optical system permitted energy densities and angle of incidence of the beams to be adjusted over wide ranges. This optical system was incorporated into a controlled atmosphere, fiber growth furnace. The two principal advantages of a CO2 laser heat source are that ambient atmospheres may be freely selected to optimize fiber properties and the laser has no inherent temperature limit, so extremely high melting point materials can be melted. Both advantages were demonstrated.

Optimum instantaneous impulsive orbital injection to attain a specified asymptotic velocity vector.

A nalysis of the necessary conditions of Battin for instantaneous orbital injection, with consideration of the uniqueness of his solution, and of the further problem which arises in the degenerate case when radius vector and asymptotic vector are separated by 180 deg. It is shown that when the angular separation between radius vector and asymptotic velocity vector satisfies theta not equal to 180 deg, there are precisely two insertion-velocity vectors which permit attainment of the target asymptotic velocity vector, one yielding posigrade, the other retrograde motion. When theta equals to 180 deg, there is a family of insertion-velocity vectors which permit attainment of a specified asymptotic velocity vector with a unique insertion-velocity vector for every arbitrary orientation of a target unit angular momentum vector.

A unified approach to the classification of visual data systems.

Description of an approach to attaining a unified means of characterizing film, TV, and optical data systems. The concept is based on the premise that all of these imaging systems can be described by an equation similar to the ideal imaging system described by Rose (1948). This technique permits the direct comparison of film and TV performance without converting speed, film resolution lines, TV resolution lines, highlight output current and video bandwidth into compatible units, only to find some essential element of the conversion has been omitted from the particular specification in use. Most important, it permits system performance criteria to be based on input and output criteria without extensive manipulation of the elements between input and output.
