Leading jets and energy loss

The formation and evolution of leading jets can be described by jet functions which satisfy non-linear DGLAP-type evolution equations. Different than for inclusive jets, the leading jet functions constitute normalized probability densities for the leading jet to carry a longitudinal momentum fraction relative to the initial fragmenting parton. We present a parton shower algorithm which allows for the calculation of leading-jet cross sections where logarithms of the jet radius and threshold logarithms are resummed to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL') accuracy. By calculating the mean of the leading jet distribution, we are able to quantify the average out-of-jet radiation, the so-called jet energy loss. When an additional reference scale is measured, we are able to determine the energy loss of leading jets at the cross section level which is identical to parton energy loss at leading-logarithmic accuracy. We identify several suitable cross sections for an extraction of the jet energy loss and we present numerical results for leading subjets at the LHC. In addition, we consider hemisphere and event-wide leading jets in electron-positron annihilation similar to measurements performed at LEP. Besides the average energy loss, we also consider its variance and other statistical quantities such as the KL divergence which quantifies the difference between quark and gluon jet energy loss. We expect that our results will be particularly relevant for quantifying the energy loss of quark and gluon jets that propagate through hot or cold nuclear matter.

Measurements of differential cross-sections in top-quark pair events with a high transverse momentum top quark and limits on beyond the Standard Model contributions to top-quark pair production with the ATLAS detector at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Cross-section measurements of top-quark pair production where the hadronically decaying top quark has transverse momentum greater than 355 GeV and the other top quark decays into ℓνb are presented using 139 fb –1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment during proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The fiducial cross-section at √s = 13 TeV is measured to be σ = 1.267 ± 0.005 ± 0.053 pb, where the uncertainties reflect the limited number of data events and the systematic uncertainties, giving a total uncertainty of 4.2%. The cross-section is measured differentially as a function of variables characterizing the tt¯ system and additional radiation in the events. The results are compared with various Monte Carlo generators, including comparisons where the generators are reweighted to match a parton-level calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. The reweighting improves the agreement between data and theory. The measured distribution of the top-quark transverse momentum is used to search for new physics in the context of the effective field theory framework. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is observed and limits are set on the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-six operators O tG and $O$ $^{(8)}_{tq}$, where the limits on the latter are the most stringent to date.

Reweighting Underlying Event and Colour Reconnection parameter variations in Sherpa

We propose and validate a new method to trace the impact of parameter variations in the simulation of multi-parton interactions and colour reconnections in the Sherpa event generator. They are reflected, at an event-by-event basis, through relative weights with respect to the central production parameters that give rise to the generated events and distributions. Our method facilitates the tuning of the Monte Carlo event generator at a dramatically reduced computational cost, alleviates parameter sensitivity studies, and enables robust quantification of parametric uncertainties on-the-fly, one of the missing ingredients for future simulations of high-energy particle collisions. The method can easily be adapted to and implemented in other event generators. To illustrate its potential, we here consider combined tunes of the multi-parton-interaction and colour-reconnection models in Sherpa using LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=7\,\text{TeV}$. We furthermore calibrate the energy-scaling behaviour of dimensionful model parameters based on $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$ LHC data and Tevatron data taken at $\sqrt{s}=1.96\,\text{TeV}$.

Evidence of medium response to hard probes using correlations of Z bosons with hadrons in heavy ion collisions

The first measurement of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle distributions relative to the momentum vector of a Z boson for low transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) charged hadrons in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions is presented. By studying the hadrons produced in an event with a high-$p_\mathrm{T}$ Z boson (40 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 350 GeV), the analysis probes how the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium created in these collisions affects the parton recoiling opposite to the Z boson. Utilizing PbPb data at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV from 2018 with an integrated luminosity of 1.67 nb$^{-1}$ and proton-proton (pp) data at the same energy from 2017 with 301 pb$^{-1}$, the distributions are examined in bins of charged-hadron $p_\mathrm{T}$. A significant modification of the distributions for charged hadrons in the range 1 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 2 GeV in PbPb collisions is observed when compared to reference measurements from pp collisions. The data provide new information about the correlation between hard and soft particles in heavy ion collisions, which can be used to test predictions of various jet quenching models. The results are consistent with expectations of a hydrodynamic wake created when the QGP is depleted of energy by the parton propagating through it. Based on comparisons of PbPb data with pp references and predictions from theoretical models, this Letter presents the first evidence of medium-recoil and medium-hole effects caused by a hard probe.

Universality aspects of quantum corrections to transverse momentum broadening in QCD media

We study non-linear quantum corrections to transverse momentum broadening (TMB) of a fast parton propagating in dense QCD matter in the leading logarithmic approximation. These non-local corrections yield an anomalous super-diffusive behavior characterized by a heavy tailed distribution which is associated with Lévy random walks. Using a formal analogy with the physics of traveling waves, we show that at late times the transverse momentum distribution tends to a universal scaling regime. We derive analytic solutions in terms of an asymptotic expansion around the scaling limit for both fixed and running coupling. We note that our analytic approach yields a good agreement with the exact numerical solutions down to realistic values of medium length. Finally, we discuss the interplay between system size and energy dependence of the diffusion coefficient $\hat{q}$ and its connection with the gluon distribution function that is manifest at large transverse momentum transfer.

Jet energy drop

We study the jet energy drop, which is the relative difference between the groomed and ungroomed jet energy or transverse momentum. It is one of the fundamental quantities that characterizes the impact of grooming on jets produced in high energy collisions. We consider three different grooming algorithms i) soft drop, ii) iterated soft drop, and iii) trimming. We carry out the resummation of large logarithms of the jet energy drop, the jet radius as well as relevant grooming parameters at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL') accuracy. In addition, we account for non-global and clustering logarithms, and determine the next-to-leading order corrections. For soft drop we perform a joint resummation of the jet energy drop and the groomed jet radius, which is necessary to achieve the correct all-order structure of the cross section, in particular for the Sudakov-safe case of soft drop with β = 0. We present numerical results for LHC energies and compare to Pythia simulations as well as CMS data. Our factorization framework predicts the onset of nonperturbative effects in the jet energy distribution, in line with what we find in Pythia. The jet energy drop observables stand out because they only probe soft radiation, making them ideal candidates for the tuning of parton shower Monte Carlo event generators and for probing medium effects in heavy-ion collisions.

Search for jet quenching effects in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV via di-jet acoplanarity

The ALICE Collaboration reports a search for jet quenching effects in high-multiplicity (HM) proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, using the semi-inclusive azimuthal-difference distribution Δφ of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high-p T,trig ) trigger hadron. Jet quenching may broaden the Δφ distribution measured in HM events compared to that in minimum bias (MB) events. The measurement employs a p T,trig -differential observable for data-driven suppression of the contribution of multiple partonic interactions, which is the dominant background. While azimuthal broadening is indeed observed in HM compared to MB events, similar broadening for HM events is observed for simulations based on the PYTHIA 8 Monte Carlo generator, which does not incorporate jet quenching. Detailed analysis of these data and simulations show that the azimuthal broadening is due to bias of the HM selection towards events with multiple jets in the final state. The identification of this bias has implications for all jet quenching searches where selection is made on the event activity.

Measurement of b -quark fragmentation properties in jets using the decay $B^±$ → $J/ψK^±$ in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The fragmentation properties of jets containing b-hadrons are studied using charged B mesons in 139 fb -1 of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during the period from 2015 to 2018. The B mesons are reconstructed using the decay of B ± into J/ψK ± , with the J/ψ decaying into a pair of muons. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-k t algorithm with radius parameter R = 0.4. The measurement determines the longitudinal and transverse momentum profiles of the reconstructed B hadrons with respect to the axes of the jets to which they are geometrically associated. These distributions are measured in intervals of the jet transverse momentum, ranging from 50 GeV to above 100 GeV. The results are corrected for detector effects and compared with several Monte Carlo predictions using different parton shower and hadronisation models. The results for the longitudinal and transverse profiles provide useful inputs to improve the description of heavy-flavour fragmentation in jets.

QCD-motivated description of very high energy particle interactions

Cross sections for the production of secondaries with large transverse momentum can become comparable to the total cross section in the TeV energy range. It is argued that the onset of this effect is observed at sub TeV energies via an increase of the rapidity distribution near y = 0, an increase of p sub T with energy and, most directly, via a correlation between p sub T and multiplicity. If indeed scaling violations are associated with the hard scattering of partons, then scaling violations are largely confined to the central region and have little effect on cosmic ray data which are sensitive to the forward fragmentation region.

ECCE unpolarized TMD measurements

For this work, we performed feasibility studies for various measurements that are related to unpolarized TMD distribution and fragmentation functions for the ECCE detector proposal. The processes studied include semi-inclusive Deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The single hadron cross sections and multiplicities were extracted as a function of the DIS variables x and Q 2 , as well as the semi-inclusive variables z, which corresponds to the momentum fraction the detected hadron carries relative to the struck parton and P T , which corresponds to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron relative to the virtual photon. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to accumulated luminosities of 10 fb –1 and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. The expected uncertainties are then used to obtain the expected impact on the related TMD distribution and fragmentation functions. We find that the ECCE detector proposal fulfills the physics requirements on these channels as detailed in the EIC Yellow Report.

Jet-hadron correlations with respect to the event plane in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions in STAR

Angular distributions of charged particles relative to jet axes are studied in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions as a function of the jet orientation with respect to the event plane. This differential study tests the expected path-length dependence of energy loss experienced by a hard-scattered parton as it traverses the hot and dense medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. A second-order event plane is used in the analysis as an experimental estimate of the reaction plane formed by the collision impact parameter and the beam direction. Charged-particle jets with 15 < 𝑝 T,jet < 20 and 20 < 𝑝 T,jet < 40 ⁢GeV/𝑐 were reconstructed with the anti-𝑘 T algorithm with radius parameter setting of 𝑅 = 0.4 in the 20–50% centrality bin to maximize the initial-state eccentricity of the interaction region. The reaction plane fit method is implemented to remove the flow-modulated background with better precision than prior methods. Yields and widths of jet-associated charged-hadron distributions are extracted in three angular bins between the jet axis and the event plane. The event-plane (EP) dependence is further quantified by ratios of the associated yields in different EP bins. No dependence on orientation of the jet axis with respect to the event plane is seen within the uncertainties in the kinematic regime studied. This finding is consistent with a similar experimental observation by ALICE in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collision data.

TMD factorisation for diffractive jets in photon-nucleus interactions

Abstract Using the colour dipole picture and the colour glass condensate effective theory, we study the diffractive production of two or three jets via coherent photon-nucleus interactions at high energy. We consider the hard regime where the photon virtuality and/or the transverse momenta of the produced jets are much larger than the saturation momentumQ s of the nuclear target. We show that, despite this hardness, the leading-twist contributions are controlled by relatively large parton configurations, with transverse sizesR~ 1/Q s , which undergo strong scattering and probe gluon saturation. We demonstrate that these leading-twist contributions admit transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorisation, in terms of quark and gluon diffractive TMD distribution functions, for which we obtain explicit expressions from first principles. We go beyond our previous work by evaluating the contributions involving the quark diffractive distributions and by establishing that their DGLAP evolution emerges via controlled calculations within the colour dipole picture. We find the same expression for the quark diffractive TMD in two different processes (semi-inclusive diffraction and the diffractive production of quark-gluon dijets), thus demonstrating its universality.

Measurement of the top-quark mass using decays with a J/ψ meson at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The top-quark mass is measured using top-quark decays producing an isolated lepton and J/ψ meson reconstructed in its μ+μ− decay mode. The data sample was recorded with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13$$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The measurement is based on the invariant mass m(ℓμ+μ−) of the system made of the isolated lepton ℓ from the W boson decay and the non-isolated μ+μ− pair from a J/ψ decay of a b-hadron, exploiting its sensitivity to the top-quark mass. An unbinned maximum-likelihood fit to the m(ℓμ+μ−) distribution is performed to extract the top-quark mass. The top-quark mass is measured to be mtop = 172.17 ± 0.80 (stat) ± 0.81 (syst) ± 1.07 (recoil) GeV, with a total uncertainty of 1.56 GeV. The third uncertainty arises from changing the dipole parton shower gluon-recoil scheme used in top-quark decays.

Neural-network extraction of unpolarised transverse-momentum-dependent distributions

We present the first extraction of transverse-momentum-dependent distributions of unpolarized quarks from experimental Drell-Yan data using neural networks to parametrize their nonperturbative part. We show that neural networks outperform traditional parametrizations providing a more accurate description of data. This Letter establishes the feasibility of using neural networks to explore the multidimensional partonic structure of hadrons and paves the way for more accurate determinations based on machine-learning techniques.

Parton Energy Loss in the Generalized High-Twist Approach

In this work, we calculate the radiative parton energy loss in the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus within a generalized high-twist approach. The final gluon radiation spectrum is a convolution of the hard partonic part and the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) quark-gluon correlation function, without the twist expansion in the transverse momentum of the initial gluons used in original high twist approach. The TMD quark-gluon correlation function can be factorized approximately as the product of initial quark distribution and TMD gluon distribution which can be used to define the generalized or TMD jet transport coefficient. The radiation spectrum will recover the Gylassy-Levai-Vitev (GLV) result in the first order of the opacity expansion, under the static scattering center and soft gluon radiation approximation. We also investigate numerically the difference as a result of the soft gluon radiation approximation, under the static scattering center approximation.

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced in top-quark decays using dilepton events at $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment

A measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced in top-quark decays is presented, using proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ TeV. The data were collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The measurement is performed selecting $t$$\overline{t}$ events decaying into final states with two charged leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two b-tagged jets. The polarisation is extracted from the differential cross-section distribution of the cos$⁡θ$* variable, where $θ$* is the angle between the momentum direction of the charged lepton from the W boson decay and the reversed momentum direction of the b-quark from the top-quark decay, both calculated in the W boson rest frame. Parton-level results, corrected for the detector acceptance and resolution, are presented for the cos⁡θ* angle. The measured fractions of longitudinal, left- and right-handed polarisation states are found to be $f$ 0 = 0.684 ± 0.005 (stat.) ± 0.014 (syst.), $f$ L = 0.318 ± 0.003 (stat.) ± 0.008 (syst.) and $f$ R = -0.002 ± 0.002 (stat.) ± 0.014 (syst.), in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

Comparison of inclusive and photon-tagged jet suppression in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions with ATLAS

Parton energy loss in the quark–gluon plasma (QGP) is studied with a measurement of photon-tagged jet production in 1.7 nb –1 of Pb+Pb data and 260 pb –1 of pp data, both at $\sqrt{^S{\text{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV, with the ATLAS detector. The process $pp$ → γ +jet+X and its analogue in Pb+Pb collisions is measured in events containing an isolated photon with transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) above 50 GeV and reported as a function of jet $p_{\text{T}}$. This selection results in a sample of jets with a steeply falling $p_{\text{T}}$ distribution that are mostly initiated by the showering of quarks. The $pp$ and Pb+Pb measurements are used to report the nuclear modification factor, $R_{\text{AA}}$, and the fractional energy loss, $S_{\text{loss}}$, for photon-tagged jets. In addition, the results are compared with the analogous ones for inclusive jets, which have a significantly smaller quark-initiated fraction. The $R_{\text{AA}}$ and $S_{\text{loss}}$ values are found to be significantly different between those for photon-tagged jets and inclusive jets, demonstrating that energy loss in the QGP is sensitive to the colour-charge of the initiating parton. Finally, the results are also compared with a variety of theoretical models of colour-charge-dependent energy loss.

Hadronization of heavy quarks

Heavy-flavor hadrons produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are a sensitive probe for studying hadronization mechanisms of the quark-gluon-plasma. In this paper, we survey how different transport models for the simulation of heavy-quark diffusion through a quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions implement hadronization and how this affects final state observables. Utilizing the same input charm-quark distribution in all models at the hadronization transition, we find that the transverse-momentum dependence of the nuclear modification factor of various charm hadron species has significant sensitivity to the hadronization scheme. In addition, the charm-hadron elliptic flow exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the elliptic flow of the hadronizing partonic medium.
