Amorphization resistance of nanocrystalline 3C-SiC implanted with H2+ ions

Compared to single-crystal SiC, nanocrystalline SiC with high densities of stacking faults has been reported to be much more resistant to amorphization under self-ion and electron irradiations. This study examines H2+ ion irradiation-induced amorphization in nanocrystalline 3C-SiC with dense stacking faults using transmission electron microscopy. The results show that full amorphization at room temperature occurs at a comparable dose to that for its single-crystal SiC counterpart under the identical irradiation conditions. Both materials are amorphized as a result of local damage accumulation. The formation of the nucleation sites for amorphization is not appreciably affected by the presence of stacking faults and grain boundaries. The behavior may be attributed to the significant chemical effects that may completely immobilize the point defects in SiC at room temperature. The results suggest cautions be excised to use nanocrystalline SiC materials in high H irradiation environment at room temperature. Further studies of the H behavior at elevated temperatures are warranted.

Temperature dependence of irradiation-induced nanocrystallization in amorphous silicon carbide

Ion irradiation induced nucleation and growth in amorphous SiC at elevated temperatures are investigated in this study. Both as-deposited amorphous and Kr ion irradiation-amorphized SiC films are used for the investigation. Similar behavior of particle precipitation in the two types of the films is observed. It is found that the threshold temperature for nucleation is between 550 and 700 K, which is considerably higher than the critical temperature for full amorphization in SiC irradiated with Kr ions. There is a temperature regime up to at least 900 K, where the growth rates are only weakly dependent of the irradiation temperature. This temperature regime is potentially useful to tailor the size and density of nanocrystalline SiC precipitates by optimizing the ion irradiation conditions.

Uranium recovery from seawater using amidoxime-based braided polymers synthesized from acrylic fibers

Global demand for nuclear energy is expected to rise in the coming decades. To meet these growing needs, new uranium resources must be explored. One of the potential alternatives to traditional uranium mining is oceanic uranium. The capture and recovery of uranium from the ocean has been under investigation for some time, with many recent studies focused on amidoxime based adsorbents. These adsorbents while able to achieve high uranium recovery capacities are, nevertheless, expensive to produce and adsorb a significant amount of hard to remove vanadium. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adsorption performance of amidoxime based polymer braids synthesized from acrylic fibers which are designed to significantly cut polymer synthesis and conditioning costs. Adsorption experiments were performed in a recirculating raceway flume system at environmental conditions, approximately 10.8 oC, with 40-micron prefiltered seawater over 28 days for small and large sized LCW polymer braids. For both braid sizes, the adsorption of vanadium was far lower on the LCW materials than on Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s amidoxime based AF1 and AI8 small braids, with the LCW small braids outperforming both materials with respect to uranium adsorption under similar conditions. Adsorption modeling was used to simulate the performance at higher temperatures based on 20oC experiments previously performed with similar materials. Simulation results indicated that the small LCW braids would have a less significant advantage with respect to uranium adsorption over both AF1 and AI8 at 20oC and adsorb slightly less uranium than AF1 at 31oC. Vanadium adsorption by LCW small braids was less than one third of vanadium adsorption by either AF1 or AI8 for all temperatures. This behavior indicates that the LCW materials are able to achieve comparable uranium adsorption to other amidoxime adsorbents previously developed, while being cheaper to produce and adsorbing significantly less vanadium.

Rational Construction of Porous Metal–Organic Frameworks for Uranium(VI) Extraction: The Strong Periodic Tendency with a Metal Node

Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported as important porous materials for the potential utility in metal ion separation, coordinating the functionality, structure, and component of MOFs remains a great challenge. Herein, a series of anionic rare earth MOFs (RE-MOFs) were synthesized via a solvothermal template reaction and for the first time explored for uranium(VI) capture from an acidic medium. The unusually high extraction capacity of UO2 2 + (e.g., 538 mg U per g of Y-MOF) was achieved through ion-exchange with the concomitant release of Me 2 NH 2 + , during which the uranium(VI) extraction in the series of isostructural RE-MOFs was found to be highly sensitive to the ionic radii of the metal nodes. That is, the uranium(VI) adsorption capacities continuously increased as the ionic radii decreased. Finally, in-depth mechanism insight was obtained from molecular dynamics simulations, suggesting that both the accessible pore volume of the MOFs and hydrogen-bonding interactions contribute to the strong periodic tendency of uranium(VI) extraction.

Presynthetic Redox Gated Metal-to-Insulator Transition and Photothermoelectric Properties in Nickel Tetrathiafulvalene-Tetrathiolate Coordination Polymers

Photothermoelectric (PTE) materials are promising candidates for solar energy harvesting and photodetection applications, especially for near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Although the processability and tunability of organic materials are highly advantageous, examples of organic PTE materials are comparatively rare and their PTE performance is typically limited by poor photothermal (PT) conversion. Here, we report the use of redox-active Sn complexes of tetrathiafulvalene-tetrathiolate (TTFtt) as transmetalating agents for the synthesis of presynthetically redox tuned NiTTFtt materials. Unlike the neutral material NiTTFtt, which exhibits n-type glassy-metallic conductivity, the reduced materials Li 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] and [Li(THF) 1.5 ] 1.2 Ni 0.4 [NiTTFtt] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) display physical characteristics more consistent with p-type semiconductors. The broad spectral absorption and electrically conducting nature of these TTFtt-based materials enable highly efficient NIR-thermal conversion and good PTE performance. Furthermore, in contrast to conventional PTE composites, these NiTTFtt coordination polymers are notable as single-component PTE materials. As a result, the presynthetically tuned metal-to-insulator transition in these NiTTFtt systems directly modulates their PT and PTE properties.

Probabilistic Diffusion Models Advance Extreme Flood Forecasting

Extreme floods pose escalating risks in a changing climate, yet forecasting remains challenging due to peak flow underestimation and high uncertainty. We introduce diffusion-based runoff model (DRUM), a probabilistic deep learning (DL) approach that advances extreme flood forecasting across representative basins in the contiguous United States. DRUM outperforms state-of-the-art benchmarks, enhancing nowcasting skill for the top 1‰ of flows in 72.3% of studied basins. Under operational scenarios, DRUM extends reliable lead times by nearly a full day for 20- and 50-year floods. When evaluated with measured precipitation, an ideal condition, recall improves by 0.3–0.4 and the early warning window extends by 2.3 days for 50-year floods. The enhancement potential varies regionally, with precipitation-driven flood zones in the eastern and northwestern US benefiting most, gaining 3–7 days in lead time. These findings highlight the transformative potential of diffusion models as a cutting-edge generative AI technique for advancing hydrology and broader Earth system sciences.

Visualization and validation of twin nucleation and early-stage growth in magnesium

The abrupt occurrence of twinning when Mg is deformed leads to a highly anisotropic response, making it too unreliable for structural use and too unpredictable for observation. Here, we describe an in-situ transmission electron microscopy experiment on Mg crystals with strategically designed geometries for visualization of a long-proposed but unverified twinning mechanism. Combining with atomistic simulations and topological analysis, we conclude that twin nucleation occurs through a pure-shuffle mechanism that requires prismatic-basal transformations. Also, we verified a crystal geometry dependent twin growth mechanism, that is the early-stage growth associated with instability of plasticity flow, which can be dominated either by slower movement of prismatic-basal boundary steps, or by faster glide-shuffle along the twinning plane. The fundamental understanding of twinning provides a pathway to understand deformation from a scientific standpoint and the microstructure design principles to engineer metals with enhanced behavior from a technological standpoint.

Emergent properties at oxide interfaces controlled by ferroelectric polarization

Abstract Ferroelectric materials are characterized by the spontaneous polarization switchable by the applied fields, which can act as a “gate” to control various properties of ferroelectric/insulator interfaces. Here we review the recent studies on the modulation of oxide hetero-/homo-interfaces by ferroelectric polarization. We discuss the potential applications of recently developed four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy and how it can provide insights into the fundamental understanding of ferroelectric polarization-induced phenomena and stimulate future computational studies. Finally, we give the outlook for the potentials, the challenges, and the opportunities for the contribution of materials computation to future progress in the area.

Global net climate effects of anthropogenic reactive nitrogen

Anthropogenic activities have substantially enhanced the loadings of reactive nitrogen (Nr) in the Earth system since pre-industrial times, contributing to widespread eutrophication and air pollution. Increased Nr can also influence global climate through a variety of effects on atmospheric and land processes but the cumulative net climate effect is yet to be unravelled. Here we show that anthropogenic Nr causes a net negative direct radiative forcing of –0.34 [–0.20, –0.50] W m –2 in the year 2019 relative to the year 1850. This net cooling effect is the result of increased aerosol loading, reduced methane lifetime and increased terrestrial carbon sequestration associated with increases in anthropogenic Nr, which are not offset by the warming effects of enhanced atmospheric nitrous oxide and ozone. Future predictions using three representative scenarios show that this cooling effect may be weakened primarily as a result of reduced aerosol loading and increased lifetime of methane, whereas in particular N 2 O-induced warming will probably continue to increase under all scenarios. Our results indicate that future reductions in anthropogenic Nr to achieve environmental protection goals need to be accompanied by enhanced efforts to reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions to achieve climate change mitigation in line with the Paris Agreement.

Copper-dependent halogenase catalyses unactivated C−H bond functionalization

Carbon–hydrogen (C–H) bonds are the foundation of essentially every organic molecule, making them an ideal place to do chemical synthesis. The key challenge is achieving selectivity for one particular C(sp 3 )−H bond. In recent years, metalloenzymes have been found to perform C(sp 3 )−H bond functionalization. Despite substantial progresses in the past two decades, enzymatic halogenation and pseudohalogenation of unactivated C(sp 3 )−H—providing a functional handle for further modification—have been achieved with only non-haem iron/α-ketoglutarate-dependent halogenases, and are therefore limited by the chemistry possible with these enzymes. Here, in this work, we report the discovery and characterization of a previously unknown halogenase ApnU, part of a protein family containing domain of unknown function 3328 (DUF3328). ApnU uses copper in its active site to catalyse iterative chlorinations on multiple unactivated C(sp 3 )−H bonds. By taking advantage of the softer copper centre, we demonstrate that ApnU can catalyse unprecedented enzymatic C(sp 3 )−H bond functionalization such as iodination and thiocyanation. Using biochemical characterization and proteomics analysis, we identified the functional oligomeric state of ApnU as a covalently linked homodimer, which contains three essential pairs—one interchain and two intrachain—of disulfide bonds. The metal-coordination active site in ApnU consists of binuclear type II copper centres, as revealed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. This discovery expands the enzymatic capability of C(sp 3 )−H halogenases and provides a foundational understanding of this family of binuclear copper-dependent oxidative enzymes.
