Investigation of Electron Extraction and Protection Layers on Cu 2 O Photocathodes

Many semiconductor photoelectrodes used for solar fuel production require the addition of buffer and protection layers to enhance their solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency and long-term stability. For example, Cu 2 O, which is the most efficient oxide-based photocathode but suffers from photocorrosion, has been assembled with various buffer and protection layers to suppress photocorrosion and use more photoexcited electrons for useful reactions such as water reduction to H 2 . However, the abilities of various buffer and protection layers to extract electrons from Cu 2 O have never been directly evaluated. Instead, their abilities were estimated based on the photocurrent for water reduction after adding a hydrogen evolution catalyst on top of them. In these evaluations, as the photocurrent is affected not only by the buffer or protection layer but also by the catalyst, the ability of the buffer or protection layer to extract electrons from Cu 2 O could not be accurately determined or compared. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPOL), whose reduction rate is faster than the photocorrosion rate of Cu 2 O, can be used as an effective electron scavenger to directly evaluate any change caused by a buffer or protection layer in electron-hole separation in Cu 2 O. In particular, we compared the performances of ZnO and TiO 2 layers on Cu 2 O for extracting electrons and suppressing photocorrosion. We also compared the performances of TiO 2 layers prepared by electrodeposition and atomic layer deposition (ALD) to show that the deposition method can make a striking impact on the performance of the same TiO 2 because it can affect the critical characteristics of the layer (e.g., defect levels, conductivity, interfacial atomic arrangements) that govern interfacial charge transfer in multilayer photoelectrodes.

LiMo 8 O 10 : Polar Crystal Structure with Infinite Edge-Sharing Molybdenum Octahedra

Here, polycrystalline LiMo 8 O 10 was prepared in a sealed Mo crucible at 1380 °C for 48 h using the conventional high-temperature solid-state method. The polar tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4 1 md) is confirmed based on the Rietveld refinement of powder neutron diffraction and 7 Li/ 6 Li solid-state NMR. The crystal structure features infinite chains of Mo 4 O 5 (i.e., Mo 2 Mo 4/2 O 6/2 O 6/3 ) as a repeat unit containing edge-sharing Mo 6 octahedra with strong Mo–Mo metal bonding along the chain. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy of the Mo-L 3 edge is consistent with the formal Mo valence/configuration. Magnetic measurements reveal that LiMo 8 O 10 is paramagnetic down to 1.8 K. Temperature-dependent resistivity [ρ(T)] measurement indicates a semiconducting behavior that can be fitted with Mott’s variable range hopping conduction mechanism in the temperature range of 215 and 45 K. The ρ(T) curve exhibits an exponential increase below 5 K with a large ratio of ρ 1.8 /ρ 300 = 435. LiMo 8 O 10 shows a negative field-dependent magnetoresistance between 2 and 25 K. Heat capacity measurement fitted with the modified Debye model yields the Debye temperature of 365 K.

Electronic Structure, Optical Properties, and Photoelectrochemical Activity of Sn-Doped Fe 2 O 3 Thin Films

Hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) is a well-known oxide semiconductor suitable for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting and industry gas sensing. It is widely known that Sn doping of Fe 2 O 3 can enhance the device performance, yet the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this work, we determine the relationship between electronic structure, optical properties and PEC activity of Sn doped Fe 2 O 3 by studying highly crystalline, well-controlled thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). We show that Sn doping substantially increases the n-type conductivity of Fe 2 O 3 , and the conduction mechanism is better described by small-polaron hoping (SPH) model. Only 0.2% Sn doping significantly reduce the activation energy barrier for SPH conduction from at least 0.5 eV for undoped Fe 2 O 3 to 0.14 eV for doped ones. A combination of X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveals the Fermi level gradually shifts toward the conduction band minimum with Sn doping. A localized Fe 2+ like gap state is observed at the top of valence band, accounting for the SPH conduction. Interestingly, in contrast to the literature, we find that only 0.2% Sn doping in Fe 2 O 3 significantly improves the PEC activity, while more Sn decreases it. The improved PEC activity is partially attributed to an increased band bending potential which facilitates the charge separation at space charge region. The reduced activation energy barrier for SPH will facilitate the transport of photo-excited carriers for the enhanced PEC, which is of interest for further carrier dynamics study.

Structure and Reactivity of Pristine and Reduced Spinel CoFe 2 O 4 (001)/(100) Surfaces

Cobalt ferrite, CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO), nanocrystals are efficient and competitive anode materials in the field of electrochemical water splitting. Using density functional theory with on-site Hubbard U corrections (DFT+U), we have investigated the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of CFO (001)/(100) surfaces, as well as their reactivities towards water adsorption. Special attention has been focused on the formation of oxygen vacancies (V O ), due to their key role in the oxidation activity of metal oxides, often based on the Mars-van-Krevelen mechanism. Our results show that vacancy formation is easiest at oxygen sites that are not bound to tetrahedrally-coordinated Fe. Water adsorbs mainly in molecular form on the Co/Fe metal cations, whereas it dissociates at defects. In comparison to other spinels, CFO is similar to NiFe 2 O 4 , exhibiting relatively low energy cost of V O formation and a strong affinity of the vacancies towards water. Furthermore, these findings suggest that CFO may be a more promising oxidation catalyst than NiCo 2 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 .

Unraveling the Origin of Photocatalytic Deactivation in CeO 2 /Nb 2 O 5 Heterostructure Systems during Methanol Oxidation: Insight into the Role of Cerium Species

The study provides deep insight into the origin of photocatalytic deactivation of Nb 2 O 5 after modification with ceria. Of particular interest was to fully understand the role of ceria species in diminishing the photocatalytic performance of CeO 2 /Nb 2 O 5 heterostructures. For this purpose, ceria was loaded on niobia surfaces by wet impregnation. The as-prepared materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. Photocatalytic activity of parent metal oxides (i.e., Nb 2 O 5 and CeO 2 ) and as-prepared CeO 2 / Nb 2 O 5 heterostructures with different ceria loadings were tested in methanol photooxidation, a model gas-phase reaction. Deep insight into the photocatalytic process provided by operando-IR techniques combined with results of photoluminescence studies revealed that deactivation of CeO 2 /Nb 2 O 5 heterostructures resulted from increased recombination of photo-excited electrons and holes. The main factor contributing to more efficient recombination of the charge carriers in the heterostructures was the ultrafine size of the ceria species. The presence of such highly dispersed ceria species on the niobia surface provided a strong interface between these two semiconductors, enabling efficient charge transfer from Nb 2 O 5 to CeO 2 . However, the ceria species supported on niobia exhibited a high defect site concentration, which acted as highly active recombination centers for the photo-induced charge carriers.

Hydrogen Uptake Kinetics of 1,4-Bis(phenylethynyl)benzene Rubberized O-Rings: Measurements, Modeling, and Comparison with Additional Forms of Organic Getters

A class of molecules called “hydrogen getters” can react with, or scavenge, H 2 in applications where the hydrogen presence and/or buildup are not desirable. One such “getter”, 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene or DEB, can be incorporated into a silicone matrix in the form of an O-ring for added flexibility, environmental resiliency, and convenient use as a gasket in sealed applications. However, the performance and kinetics of this DEB-loaded rubberized O-ring have not yet been characterized. Here in this work, the hydrogen uptake kinetics of the rubberized DEB O-ring were extracted by the isoconversional analysis from isothermal isobaric data under conditions of 13,332 Pa H 2 and 305–325 K. The isoconversional and cylindrical diffusion approximations were then used to predict and model the hydrogen uptake of rubberized DEB O-rings under any arbitrary condition, as illustrated in this work for the simple case of a constant rate of hydrogen generation/input. In comparison with other Pd/carbon-based/organic getter systems, these rubberized DEB O-rings provide a type of hydrogen getter material with enhanced flexibility and catalyst protection in applications where an O-ring seal is needed.

Development of Porous Crystalline Materials for Selective Binding of O 2 from Air

Porous materials that take advantage of different chemisorptive behaviors of O 2 and N 2 could be an effective alternative to approaches based on physisorption for this important separation. Recently, the tetra-nuclear cobalt complex [(Co(III) 2 (bpbp)O 2 ) 2 bdc](PF 6 ) 4 (CSD code: GAMVIB; bpbp – = 2,6-bis(N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl)-4-tert-butylphenolato; bdc 2– = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylato) was shown to have potential for O 2 /N 2 separations based on this concept. This observation raises the question of what other known materials have similar properties. Here, we combine structure screening with a high-throughput periodic density functional theory (DFT) workflow to investigate O 2 and N 2 adsorption in materials from validated crystal structure databases (e.g., CoRE-MOF database and CSD database). These calculations identify multiple materials that have similar di-Co clusters to GAMVIB that are predicted to selectively bind O 2 over N 2 , and suggest design rules that can be used to tune the O 2 and N 2 affinities in materials of this kind.

Determining the Conformation of Supported Complexes Using an 17 O TEDOR-like NMR Experiment

Dynamic nuclear polarization surface-enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has enabled the determination of the three-dimensional configuration of surface sites, in particular supported metal complexes of relevance to single-site heterogeneous catalysis. These approaches have chiefly leveraged the application of NMR double-resonance experiments that either reveal the complex conformation via point-to-point intramolecular distances between spin-labeled atoms or the complex-surface orientation via distances between the spins and the surface plane. Either method typically requires expensive isotope labeling and each reports on different structural features. The application of an experiment that simultaneously reveals both types of distances with chemical resolution would be ideal. Here, in this article, we describe an 17 O{ 1 H} pseudo-3D correlation experiment that achieves this goal. Specifically, Si–O–Si and Si–O–M oxygens are well-resolved by 17 O NMR; therefore, distances can be simultaneously measured radially, between Si– 17 O–M and the 1 H’s of the ligands, and vertically to the Si– 17 O–Si linkages of the silica support. We demonstrate the experiment using supported yttrium and zirconium complexes. Good agreement is obtained when comparing the experimental results to theoretical predictions from density functional theory calculations, highlighting the reliability of this relatively simple experiment.

Joint Theoretical and Experimental Study of the Electronic, Magnetic, and Lattice Phonon Dynamics Properties of Ca x Fe y O z Compounds Applied to CO 2 Capture

Unleashing energy innovation ensures a resilient and reliable energy supply. There is a critical need for the development of new carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) captors that have improved energy efficiency accompanied by lower capital and operational costs to ensure abundant, affordable, and secure energy. Among solid materials, CaO is a good CO 2 sorbent for capture technology due to its wide availability and low cost. However, CaO also suffers from some disadvantages, such as high calcination temperature, decreasing capability due to sintering, attrition, and reaction with SO x and NO x . In this study, we employed an ab initio thermodynamic approach and experimental measurements to improve its CO 2 capture performance during the cycles. To do so, we explored the electronic, magnetic, and lattice dynamic properties of a series of calcium ferrites (Ca x Fe y O z ) and applied them for CO 2 capture. Our results showed that all of them can thermodynamically react with CO 2 to form CaCO 3 and iron oxides. Compared to pure CaO capturing CO 2 , CaFe 3 O 4 , CaFe 2 O 4 , and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 could shift the CO 2 regeneration temperature to a lower range. The experimental measurements showed that CaFeO 2 is a good CO 2 captor with or without the presence of an O 2 presence. The calculated thermodynamic properties of Ca x Fe y O z capturing the CO 2 reactions can be used to find their operational temperature ranges for different CO 2 capture technologies.

Thermally Aged Li–Mn–O Cathode with Stabilized Hybrid Cation and Anion Redox

Though low-cost and environmentally friendly, Li–Mn–O cathodes suffer from low energy density. Although synthesized Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 -like overlithiated spinel cathode with reversible hybrid anion- and cation-redox (HACR) activities has a high initial capacity, it degrades rapidly due to oxygen loss and side-reaction-induced electrolyte decomposition. In this study, we develop a two-step heat treatment to promote local decomposition as Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 → 2LiMn 2 O 4 + Li 2 MnO 3 + 1/2 O 2 ↑, which releases near-surface reactive oxygen that is harmful to cycling stability. The produced nanocomposite delivers a high discharge capacity of 225 mAh/g and energy density of over 700 Wh/kg at active-material level at a current density of 100 mA/g between 1.8 to 4.7 V. Benefiting from suppressed oxygen loss and side reactions, 80% capacity retention is achieved after 214 cycles in half cells. With industrially acceptable electrolyte amount (6 g/Ah), full cells paired with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anode have a good retention over 100 cycles.

Understanding the Electronic Structure Evolution of Epitaxial LaNi1-xFexO3 Thin Films for Water Oxidation

Rare earth nickelates including LaNiO3 are promising catalysts for water electrolysis to produce oxygen gas. Recent studies report that Fe substitution for Ni can significantly enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of LaNiO3. However, the role of Fe in increasing activity remains ambiguous, with potential origins both structural and electronic in nature. Here, by utilizing a series of epitaxial LaNi1-xFexO3 thin films synthesized by oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy, we report that Fe substitution tunes the oxidation state of Ni in LaNi1-xFexO3 and a volcano-like OER trend is observed with x = 0.375 being the most active. Spectroscopy and ab initio modeling reveal that the high-valent Fe3+? B-site cationic species strongly increases the transition metal (TM) 3d bandwidth via Ni-O-Fe bridges and enhances the TM 3d-O 2p hybridization, boosting the OER activity. Furthermore, pH-dependent electrochemical measurements suggest that the OER on LaNi1-xFexO3 involves a lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism.

Multinonmetal-Doped V 2 O 5 Nanocomposites for Lithium-Ion Battery Cathodes

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are critical for portable electronics and electric vehicles, demanding higher energy density to meet increasing energy storage needs. Current commercial cathode materials, such as LiFePO 4 and LiCoO 2 , are limited by a single electron transfer, restricting their energy density. Vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) emerges as a promising high-capacity cathode due to its high theoretical capacity of 443 mA h g –1 with three Li storage capacities, significantly surpassing conventional materials. However, the practical application of V 2 O 5 is hindered by a large structural evolution and rapid capacity fading during full lithium intercalation. Here, this study introduces a multinonmetal doping (MNM) strategy to enhance V 2 O 5 cathodes by incorporating all-nonmetal dopants (B, P, and Si) and graphene (G). MNM-V 2 O 5 -G exhibits increased surface oxygen defects, improving charge transfer kinetics and thus enhancing the rate performance and cycling stability. Our results provide valuable insights into the role of surface oxygen defects in stabilizing V 2 O 5 with element doping. This research highlights the potential of multinonmetal doping to improve LIB cathode materials, offering a promising pathway for design of high-energy-density V 2 O 5 cathodes and advancing the development of next-generation energy storage solutions.

Unlocking the Potential of A-Site Ca-Doped LaCo 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ : A Redox-Stable Cathode Material Enabling High Current Density in Direct CO 2 Electrolysis

Massive carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission from recent human industrialization has affected the global ecosystem and raised great concern for environmental sustainability. The solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is a promising energy conversion device capable of efficiently converting CO 2 into valuable chemicals using renewable energy sources. However, Sr-containing cathode materials face the challenge of Sr carbonation during CO 2 electrolysis, which greatly affects the energy conversion efficiency and long-term stability. Thus, A-site Ca-doped La1– x CaxCo 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) oxides are developed for direct CO 2 conversion to carbon monoxide (CO) in an intermediate-temperature SOEC (IT-SOEC). With a polarization resistance as low as 0.18 O cm 2 in pure CO 2 atmosphere, a remarkable current density of 2.24 A cm –2 was achieved at 1.5 V with La 0.6 Ca 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LCCF64) as the cathode in La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.83 Mg 0.17 O 3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte (300 µm) supported electrolysis cells using La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) as the air electrode at 800 °C. Furthermore, symmetrical cells with LCCF64 as the electrodes also show promising electrolysis performance of 1.78 A cm –2 at 1.5 V at 800 °C. In addition, stable cell performance has been achieved on direct CO 2 electrolysis at an applied constant current of 0.5 A cm –2 at 800 °C. The easily removable carbonate intermediate produced during direct CO 2 electrolysis makes LCCF64 a promising regenerable cathode. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance of the LCCF64 cathode is ascribed to the highly active and stable metal/perovskite interfaces that resulted from the in situ exsolved Co/CoFe nanoparticles and the additional oxygen vacancies originated from the Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 phase synergistically providing active sites for CO 2 adsorption and electrolysis. Here this study offers a novel approach to design catalysts with high performance for direct CO 2 electrolysis.

Fine-Tuning of Pt Dispersion on Al 2 O 3 and Understanding the Nature of Active Pt Sites for Efficient CO and NH 3 Oxidation Reactions

Fine-tuning the dispersion of active metal species on widely used supports is a research hotspot in the catalysis community, which is vital for achieving a balance between the atomic utilization efficiency and the intrinsic activity of active sites. In this work, using bayerite Al(OH) 3 as support directly or after precalcination at 200 or 550 °C, Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with distinct Pt dispersions from single atoms to clusters (ca. 2 nm) were prepared and evaluated for CO and NH 3 removal. Richer surface hydroxyl groups on AlO x (OH) y support were proved to better facilitate the dispersion of Pt. However, Pt/Al 2 O 3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion could exhibit better activity in CO/NH 3 oxidation reactions. Further reaction mechanism study revealed that the Pt sites on Pt/Al 2 O 3 with lower Pt dispersion could be activated to Pt 0 species much easier under the CO oxidation condition, on which a higher CO adsorption capacity and more efficient O 2 activation were achieved simultaneously. Compared to Pt single atoms, PtO x clusters could also better activate NH 3 into –NH 2 and –HNO species. The higher CO adsorption capacity and the more efficient NH 3 /O 2 activation ability on Pt/Al 2 O 3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion well explained its higher CO/NH 3 oxidation activity. This study emphasizes the importance of avoiding a singular pursuit of single-atom catalyst synthesis and instead focusing on achieving the most effective Pt species on Al 2 O 3 support for targeted reactions. Finally, this approach avoids unnecessary limitations and enables a more practical and efficient strategy for Pt catalyst fabrication in emission control applications.

Oxygen Vacancy Evolution at Li x V 2 O 5 /LiPON Solid State Electrochemical Interfaces Using Depth Resolved Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy

The formation of oxygen vacancies at buried LiPON/ Li x V 2 O 5 interfaces has been observed on a near-nanometer scale and nondestructively using depth-resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (DRCLS) and interfacial markers. Before electrochemical cycling, as-deposited LiPON/Li x V 2 O 5 exhibits a 1.6 eV defect optical emission, which density functional theory calculations identify as originating from oxygen vacancies. This defect appears first within a few nanometers of the buried LiPON/Li x V 2 O 5 interface without cycling, indicating that spontaneous O diffusion from the Li x V 2 O 5 lattice into LiPON may have caused these interface-localized oxygen vacancy defects. DRCLS measured the intensity and spatial distribution of this oxygen vacancy signal as a function of electrochemical cycling in a LiPON/Li x V 2 O 5 half-cell, showing oxygen vacancy signal increasing and moving deeper into the electrode with increased cycle number. Significant electrochemical irreversibility was also observed, with poor Coulombic efficiency and a 15% drop in capacity over 50 cycles. Theoretical simulations predict that the presence of oxygen vacancies increases the energy barrier for lithium diffusion significantly, indicating that this aggregation of oxygen vacancies could be another battery degradation mechanism accompanying lithiation induced phase changes.

Fabrication of α-Fe 2 O 3 Nanoparticles/g-C 3 N 4 Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunction of Durable Photocatalytic Activity

The fabrication of a nanohybrid photocatalyst that combines α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is reported. The ensuing direct Z-scheme heterojunction greatly boosts the photocatalytic activity of the α-Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 nanohybrids. This results in organic dye degradation rates more than two times higher than its individual components, promoted by the efficient charge separation and transfer of the Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism of the nanohybrid photocatalyst. In addition, recyclability tests show an outstanding stability of the nanohybrids spanning five consecutive dye degradation experiments, during which the degradation rate is slightly improved. The origin of the improved photocatalytic performance of the nanohybrid lies in the intimate interaction between α-Fe 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 afforded by the two-step fabrication process, which enables the direct and controlled growth of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles on g-C 3 N 4 . A first ultrasound impregnation step promotes the effective anchoring of stable Fe species via Fe–N and C–N/C–O bonding, while a second microwave phase conversion step induces the subsequent growth of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles on the g-C 3 N 4 sheets. Careful control of the FeCl 3 precursor concentration up to a threshold value of 0.25 M during impregnation enables complete control over their size and phase. This approach clearly highlights the benefits of microwave reactor systems in the fabrication of hematite-based Z-scheme photocatalytic, overcoming the limitations of conventional thermal treatment technology.

Intermediate Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ Tetragonal Structure between Perovskite and Brownmillerite as a Model Catalyst with Layered Oxygen Deficiency for Enhanced Electrochemical Water Oxidation

The generation of hydrogen in an environmentally benign way is highly essential to meet future energy demands. However, in the process of splitting water electrochemically, sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) curtails its applicability, as it drags energy input. Herein, we synthesized SrCo-Fe-O oxides to optimize their OER activity by varying the Co/Fe ratio. Among them, Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ exhibited the best OER catalytic activity in the series, with an overpotential of 318 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and Tafel slope of 44.8 mV dec -1 . High-resolution neutron powder diffraction analysis identified an intermediate structure between the perovskite and brownmillerite, with alternating layers of disorderly orientated oxygen-deficient tetrahedra and fully stoichiometric octahedra. The unique stacking of tetrahedral and octahedral units facilitates desired interactions between the electrode surface and electrolyte. Theoretical calculations revealed that increased covalency of Co 3d and O 2p in Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ oxide is another primary contributor to its augmented water oxidation ability. As a model for developing catalysts with such an intermediate structure, the synergetic effect of oxygen vacancy and hybridization between Co 3d and O 2p assured the Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 6-δ oxide as a better catalyst for its enhanced OER activity.

Kinetic Model for the Reduction of Cu II Sites by NO + NH 3 and Reoxidation of NH 3 -Solvated Cu I Sites by O 2 and NO in Cu-SSZ-13

In this work, a kinetic model is developed for the reduction of Cu II sites by NO + NH 3 and the reoxidation of NH 3 -solvated Cu I sites by O 2 and NO in Cu-SSZ-13. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and spatially resolved capillary inlet mass spectrometry (SpaciMS) measurements during transient reactor experiments are utilized to identify the rate parameters associated with NO + NH 3 RHC (reduction half-cycle), proposed to occur via two distinct pathways involving adsorbed NH 3 and gas-phase NH 3 . The resulting NO + NH 3 RHC model is validated using spatiotemporal N 2 measurements covering a wide range of temperatures (200–450 °C) and space velocities (53,000–640,000 h –1 ). N 2 O formation is observed and modeled during NO + NH 3 RHC, with quantitative validation under standard selective catalytic reduction (SCR) conditions. Experimentally measured enthalpic and entropic changes associated with O 2 adsorption on NH 3 -solvated Cu I (ZCu(NH 3 ) 2 ) complexes [ Kamasamudram, K. Catal. Today 2010 , 151 (3–4), 212-222], along with activation energies estimated computationally for the intercage diffusion of ZCu(NH 3 ) 2 complexes [ Paolucci, C. Science 2017 , 357 (6 354), 898-903], are incorporated into a mean field kinetic model for the low-temperature oxidation half-cycle (OHC). Significant NH 3 release is observed during the isothermal oxidation of Cu I sites, attributed to desorption of NH 3 ligands from NH 3 -solvated Cu II dimers (Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 ). Reduction of these dimeric complexes leads to the consumption of one NO/Cu II , contradicting the expected reduction stoichiometry. Inclusion of a global Arrhenius rate for the NO titration of Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 complexes provides accurate representations of standard SCR on reduced and oxidized catalysts, predicting transient NO and NH 3 consumption between 150 and 250 °C as a function of hydrothermal aging. Deactivation of low-temperature standard SCR by NH 3 is observed at high NH 3 pressures, modeled via the formation of superoxo amino (ZCu(NH 3 ) 3 OO*) complexes during NH 3 titration of Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 complexes [ Negri, C. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2020 , 142 (37), 15884-15896]. The redox kinetic model presented here provides a foundational description of active site redox during low-temperature standard SCR, combining the recent kinetic, spectroscopic, and computational findings on the mechanism of standard SCR over Cu-SSZ-13.
