The solar spectrum of O IV, including photoexcitation by Fe IX 171.07 A

The extreme and far ultraviolet doublet spectrum of O IV, emitted from the solar transition region, is calculated taking account of expected photo-excitation by Fe IX at the wavelength 171.07 A. Four multiplets are shown to be sensitive to such photoexcitation, of which two in particular are potentially observable and could provide an estimate of the local Fe IX radiation field.

Production of O(-) from CO2 by dissociative electron attachment

Dissociative electron attachment cross-section measurements for the production of O(-) from CO2 are performed using a crossed target-beam - electron-beam collision geometry and a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The relative flow technique is used in determining the absolute values of the cross sections. The attachment energies corresponding to the five cross-section maxima are given. They are 4.4 + or - 0.1, 8.2 + or - 0.1, 13.0 + or - 0.2, 16.9 + or - 0.2, and 19.4 + or 0.2 eV. Also given are the cross sections at these maxima: 1.43 x 10 to the -19th sq cm, 4.48 x 10 to the -19th sq cm, 8.1 x 10 to the -21st sq cm, 8.1 x 10 to the -21st sq cm, and 1.2 x 10 to the -20th sq cm, respectively.

Forbidden O II studies of galactic planetary nebulae and extragalactic H II complexes

The 3727-A doublet ratio of forbidden O II was observed in five planetary nebulae and nine extragalactic groupings of H II regions (H II Complexes). The theoretical relation between this doublet ratio and nebular density was rederived using the most up-to-date atomic parameters, permitting columnar densities to be determined for all objects. The structure of extragalactic H II Complexes is discussed, and a preferred model advanced. A new method of distance determination for extragalactic systems is proposed and evaluated in the context of the presently available data.

Oxidation of silicon with a 5 eV O(-) beam

A silicon wafer has been oxidized at room temperature in vacuum using a pure, ground-state beam of O(-) ions. The beam was of sufficiently low energy that no displacement damage or implantation was energetically possible. The resulting SiO2 films were analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A logarithmic dependence of oxide thickness on dose was observed, with an extrapolated oxidation efficiency of unity for the clean silicon surface. A distinct initial oxidation phase was observed, with an anomalously high level of silicon suboxides. In addition, the valence-band offset between the silicon and the oxide was unusually small, suggesting a large interfacial dipole.

The optically thick O III spectrum. I - Diagnostic ratios involving the intercombination lines

An escape-probability calculation of the optically thick O III spectrum is carried out to obtain the optical depth dependence of the intercombination doublet at 1663 A and of resonance lines between the 2p2, 2s2p3, and 2p4 configurations. The effect of optical depth on diagnostic ratios involving the intercombination lines is quantitatively established. The general question raised is whether such effects may occur in actual sources.

Measurement of winds in Venus' upper mesosphere based on Doppler shifts of the 2.6-mm (C-12)O line

Venus observations conducted in 1988 at the first rotational transition of (C-12)O finely sampled this absorption line by means of a 32-channel filter bank; with this spatial and spectral resolution, it proved possible to measure Doppler shifts of the absorption line across the planet due to strong winds in Venus' upper mesosphere. The Doppler shifts change in a way that is indicative of westward horizontal winds. The radial wind speeds from the Doppler shifts were smoothed to reduce noise and then fitted in least-squares fashion to canonical forms of the lower atmosphere's westward zonal flow. The two flows exhibit a high correlation in orientation.

Compatibilities of YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) type phase in quintenary systems Y-Ba-Cu-O-X (impurity)

Isothermal phase diagrams at various oxygen pressures were studied by powder diffraction and chemical analytical methods. The components, Y, Ba, Cu, and O (specifically O2, O2-, and O2 sup 2-) are treated, together with C (specifically CO2 and CO2 sup 2-), alkaline metals, Mg, alkaline earths, Sc, 3-d and 4-f elements. Effects of the substitutions at the structural sites of YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) on T sub c are discussed with respect to changes in crystallochemical characteristics of the substituted phase and to the nature of the substituents.

Recombination of 5-eV O(3P) atoms with surface-adsorbed NO - Spectra and their dependence on surface material and temperature

Measurements have been conducted of the 300-850 nm recombination spectra associated with 5-eV collisions of O(3P) atoms with NO adsorbed on surfaces of MgF2, Ni, and Ti. Attention is given to the dependence of chemiluminescence intensity on surface temperature over the 240-340 K range. While all three materials tend to emit at the lower temperatures, MgF2 exhibits the greatest tendency to chemiluminescence. Both results are reflective of the greater packing density of surface-adsorbed NO at the lower temperatures for each surface. The activation energy for each surface is independent of emission wavelength, so that the same species is emitting throughout the wavelength range.

Optical emission generated by collisions of 5 eV O(3P) atoms with surface-absorbed hydrazine

Optical emission has been observed corresponding to vibrational bands in the NH (A 3Pi - X 3Sigma(-)) electronic transition during collisions of 5 eV, ground-state oxygen O(3P) atoms with MgF2 and Ni surfaces continuously exposed to a beam of hydrazine (N2H4). The NH emission intensity is observed to be about five times greater for MgF2 than for Ni. No dependence on temperature was observed for either surface in the range 240 - 340 K, implying that the NH-producing intermediate species is tightly bound. The half-lifetime for desorption of hydrazine from each surface was measured. This was found to be 120 min for the MgF2 surface at 240 K, and less than 20 min for Ni. After exposure, the surface composition was measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on the exposed and unexposed areas of both targets.

Observation of CN Z - X and B - X emissions in gas-phase collisions of fast O(3P) atoms with HCN

Studies of spacecraft surfaces in LEO have shown that CN(B - X) emission occurs when the spacecraft shuttle engine exhaust species collide with the atmosphere. A study of the reaction of fast O(3P) atoms with HCN under single-collision conditions is reported. The channels active in the hyperthermal energy regime are identified as CN(B 2Sigma(+) - X 2Sigma(+)) and CN(A 2Pi(i) - X 2Sigma(+)) transitions. The experimental B - X vibrational bands fit a synthetic spectrum of CN at a vibrational temperature of 7000 K and a rotational temperature of 2000 K. The CN(B - X) emission is observed when spacecraft shuttle-engine exhaust species collide with the atmosphere.

Determination of ammonium ion by fluorometry or spectrophotometry after on-line derivatization with o-phthalaldehyde

A fast, sensitive, simple, and highly reproducible method for routine assay of ammonium ion (NH4+) was developed by using HPLC equipment. The method is based on the reaction of NH4+ with o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) in the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol. After an on-line derivatization, the resulting NH4(+)-OPA product was quantified by using fluorometric or spectrophotometric detection. For fluorometric detection, the excitation and emission wavelengths were 410 and 470 nm, respectively. The spectrophotometric detection was made by measuring absorbance at 410 nm. Results on the effects of OPA-reagent composition and pH, reaction temperature, sample matrix, and linearity of the assay are presented. Even though it took about 2 min from the time of sample injection to the appearance of sample peak, sample injections could be overlapped at an interval of about 1 min. Thus, the actual time needed for analysis was about 1 min per assay. The method can be used in a fully automated mode by using an autosampler injector.

Relative Fluxes of Primary Particles in B-C-N-O Group from the ATIC Experiment (Science Flight)

The ATIC balloon-born experiment measures the energy spectra of elements from H to Fe in primary cosmic rays from about 100 GeV to 100 TeV. ATIC is comprised of a fully active bismuth germinate calorimeter, a carbon target with embedded scintillator hodoscopes, and a silicon matrix that is used as a main charge detector. The silicon matrix produces good charge resolution for the protons and helium but only a partial resolution for heavier nuclei. In the present paper a charge resolution of ATIC device was improved and backgrounds were reduced in the region from Be to Si by means of the upper layer of the scintillator hodoscope that was used as charge detector together with silicon matrix. Relative fluxes of nuclei B, C, N, O in the energy region from about 20 GeV/nucleon to 200 GeV/nucleon that were obtained from new high-resolution and high-quality charge spectra of nuclei are presented.
