Investigation of fluctuations in angular velocity in magnetic memory devices

The fluctuations in the angular velocity of individual assemblies of a precision mechanical system were analyzed. The system was composed of an electric motor and a magnetic drum which were connected by a flexible coupling. A dynamic model was constructed which took into account the absence of torsion in the rigid shafts of the electric motor drive rotor and the magnetic drum. The motion was described by Lagrange differential equations of the second kind. Curves are developed to show the nature of amplitude fluctuation of the magnetic drum angular velocity at a specific excitation frequency. Additional curves show the amplitudes of fluctuation of the magnetic drum angular velocity compared to the quantity of damping at specific frequencies.

Astronomy at sub-millimeter wavelengths

The first flight test of a gondola containing a Newtonian telescope with a 16 in. primary mirror is described. Bolometer tests were conducted along with gondola design studies, and changes were made in the mechanical system as a result. Parts of the system were rebuilt and tested, and it was found that the flight system had redundant data recording capabilities. In the total flight record, about 160 large signals were noted; about half of these appeared to have the correct shape for genuine signals, and the other were clearly noise spikes (they were large but the signal shape could not have been produced by the observation of a celestial object).

Mars

The evolution and physical structure of Mars are discussed primarily on the basis of Mariner 9 observations. The Martian atmosphere, density, and iron abundance are compared with those of earth, and it is noted that the planet was probably formed in less than 100,000 years. Stages in Martian differentiation are described together with the atmospheric composition, condensation and dust clouds, and surface winds. The surface is shown to have a wide diversity of geological landforms resulting from a variety of processes, including meteoroid bombardment, volcanic and tectonic activity, sapping, the action of running water, and wind action. Described landforms include impact craters, volcanic plains and domes, shield volcanoes, sinuous channels and gullies apparently formed by running water, and the enormous canyon system. Mechanisms for climatic change are considered, and questions are posed regarding the possibility of life on Mars.

Alloy softening in binary iron solid solutions

An experimental study was conducted to determine whether alloy softening in Fe alloys is dependent on electron concentration and to provide a direct comparison of alloy softening and hardening in several binary Fe alloy systems having the same processing history. Alloy additions to Fe included the elements in the Periods 4-6 and the Groups IV-VIII with the exception of technetium. A total of 19 alloy systems was investigated, and hardness testing was the primary means of evaluation. Testing was carried out at four temperatures over a homologous temperature range of 0.043-0.227 times the absolute melting temperature of unalloyed Fe. Major conclusions are that the atomic radius ratio of solute-to-Fe is the key factor in controlling low-temperature hardness of the binary Fe alloys and that alloy softening rates at 77 K and alloy hardening rates at 411 K are correlated with this atomic radius ratio for 15 of the binary alloy systems. Mechanisms of alloy softening and hardening are proposed.

Web-dendritic growth

The effects of various machine design parameters on the growth of web dendritic silicon ribbon were investigated. Ribbons were grown up to lengths of one meter, with widths increasing linearly up to one cm at the point of termination of growth. Thermal data were collected and evaluated for actual seeding and growth with variations in parameters affecting heat loss. It was found that for suitable growth, the mechanical system should be very rigid and stable, and the tolerances and specifications of the quartz crucibles must be far tighter than normal quartz tolerances. The widening rates of the ribbons were found to be a function of the temperature gradient rather than the temperature differences alone. A twin spacing in the seed of 3 microns to 2 microns was found to be unfavorable for growth; whereas spacing of 0.9 microns to 2 microns and 8 microns to 2 microns were favorable. Thermal modeling studies of the effects of furnace design parameters on the temperature distributions in melt and the growth of the dendritic web ribbon showed that the pull rate of the ribbon is strongly dependent on the temperature of the top thermal shield, the spacing between this shield and the melt, and the thickness of the growing web.

Focal plane transport assembly controls for the High Energy Astronomy Observatory X-ray telescope

The High Energy Astronomy Observatory - Mission B (HEAO-B) is a satellite observatory for the purpose of performing a detailed X-ray survey of the celestial sphere. Measurements will be made of stellar radiation in the range of 0.2 to 20 keV. The central part of the Observatory is an X-ray telescope, into the focus of which a variety of imaging instruments and spectrographs may be introduced. The telescope has a resolution of about 1 arc second, so that the instruments must be placed with extreme precision. This is obtained by a mechanical system of toggles and stops and a motor drive system controlled by a position sensing potentiometer with a resolution of about 1.5 degrees

Piloted simulator investigation of helicopter control systems effects on handling qualities during instrument flight

An exploratory piloted simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of the characteristics of helicopter flight control systems on instrument flight handling qualities. This joint FAA/NASA study was motivated by the need to improve instrument flight capability. A near-term objective is to assist in updating the airworthiness criteria for helicopter instrument flight. The experiment consisted of variations of single-rotor helicopter types and levels of stability and control augmentation systems (SCAS). These configurations were evaluated during an omnirange approach task under visual and instrument flight conditions. The levels of SCAS design included a simple rate damping system, collective decoupling plus rate damping, and an attitude command system with collective decoupling. A limited evaluation of stick force versus airspeed stability was accomplished. Some problems were experienced with control system mechanization which had a detrimental effect on longitudinal stability. Pilot ratings, pilot commentary, and performance data related to the task are presented.

On the multiplicity of solutions of the inverse problem for a vibrating beam

The paper considers a specific inverse problem for a vibrating beam with three nonsympathetic spectra. More specifically, the spectral data consist of the natural frequencies of vibration of the beam in the following three configurations: (1) clamped-clamped, (2) clamped-supported, and (3) clamped-free. The basic equations for an inhomogeneous discrete beam are derived, where this simple mechanical system provides valuable insight into the inverse problem. All the necessary ingredients for a consideration of the inverse problem are given. Attention is given to an analysis of the particular inverse problem for which the spectral data are associated with the natural frequencies of vibrations in the above configurations. It is shown that with such data, the inverse problem has a 2exp(N-1)-fold multiplicity of solutions.

Final design and fabrication of an active control system for flutter suppression on a supercritical aeroelastic research wing

The final design and hardware fabrication was completed for an active control system capable of the required flutter suppression, compatible with and ready for installation in the NASA aeroelastic research wing number 1 (ARW-1) on Firebee II drone flight test vehicle. The flutter suppression system uses vertical acceleration at win buttock line 1.930 (76), with fuselage vertical and roll accelerations subtracted out, to drive wing outboard aileron control surfaces through appropriate symmetric and antisymmetric shaping filters. The goal of providing an increase of 20 percent above the unaugmented vehicle flutter velocity but below the maximum operating condition at Mach 0.98 is exceeded by the final flutter suppression system. Results indicate that the flutter suppression system mechanical and electronic components are ready for installation on the DAST ARW-1 wing and BQM-34E/F drone fuselage.
